    Here is the seventeenth of a weekly installment discussing an episode of the popular TV series – Jericho – which aired originally back in 2006. Every Tuesday night we are watching an episode and then will discuss what happens the following day. It can be watched free on Netflix or purchased on VUDU. Jericho is also available on DVD.

    Summary:

    Desperation is taking over Jericho as the town discovers the Marines were not real – and no help is coming. The town’s food supply and rations are not lasting. It is determined the refugees have got to go. That news is not taken well and violence ensues.

    Discussion:

    The desperation in the town is overdue – but inevitable. With the average household having approx a week’s worth of food and most stores only three days on the shelves any large emergency will have people hungry in short order. But not us, right? As common sense thinking individuals we prepare by putting back extra. It’s not insanity. It’s not hoarding. It is simply common sense and totally logical.

    Lesson learned for this episode: Keep extra food on hand “just in case”.

    Watched a pretty good movie on Netflix the other day – Waffle Street. Kind of a “feel good” movie. Worth seeing.

    I am still completing my shed to make it livable. Part of the project is installing a solar-powered LED motion light outside near it. I picked one up on Amazon and it works great. I couldn’t ask for much more considering I paid like $15.00 for it. Great security light. Worth noting my two huskies run by it and do not set it off. It takes a human sized object to activate it.  Check it out HERE.

    AR-10 experience?

     

    I’m interested in expanding into the realm of AR-10 ownership in 2017. I have zero experience with these and have performed little research as of yet. If any of you out there have experience and first hand knowledge I would be very interested.

    Chilly weekend!! Heading out to the hunting stand it was just over 20 degrees. We were pretty bundled up and had a few hand warmers. Ended up not being too bad. Unfortunately no deer seen.

    I had ceased contributing to my 401k plan a couple years ago. Obviously in retrospect this was not a good thing to do. It is what it is. I have just put in a request to start contributing again up to maximum company match.

    I can foresee a time when “cash” becomes obsolete and is no longer accepted by certain companies/stores.  Already I see stores saying they will not accept bills larger than $20. I realize this is largely due to having to make change but so what?  Even the Salvation Army has credit card machines at some of their collection stands outside stores.

    I place great importance on SPEED when it comes to a “get home bag”. That means light weight with minimal supplies. Although I have a backpack now I would even consider a minimalist approach using a Maxpedition Versipack or even a smaller pouch just to keep a few items. Short to medium distances do not demand a 100 pound pack.

    A friend of mine lost his mother this year at a cabin they have in Oregon.

    I said “That’s sad, I’m sorry for your loss.”

    He said “What’s really weird is that his Uncle died in that same cabin earlier this year.”

    He was quiet for a minute or two and finally I asked him..

    Ran into a true unicorn today – the Kel-Tec CMR-30. I have been to gun shows and numerous gun shops in North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia – never seen one – ever. If not familiar the CMR is the carbine version of the popular Kel-Tec PMR-30 .22 magnum semi-automatic pistol(which I own). I have wanted a CMR since their manufacturing was announced.

    It was soooo tempting but had to walk out empty handed. I schemed all the way home how I could afford it. Was there something I could trade in? Was there something I could sell? Oh well – they are really fun guns but will just have to wait.

    A large topic in social media and mainstream media is related to “fake news”.  Fake news comes from a variety of different sources including websites that post fake articles and from people or organizations that create “propaganda” for a desired effect. I have myself fell for fake news before believing it to be real. It can be very embarrassing.

    Fake news goes to the concept of doing your own research and think for yourself. Base opinions and beliefs on facts and logic – rather than emotion and fantasy.

    The following was sent in by JohnP. I cannot vouch for the complete accuracy or the exact age of this piece. It is an excellent narrative showing the contrast between Liberal and Conservative belief systems when applied in the real world. The results to those who understand the difference are not surprising:

    Illinois & Oklahoma : I thought these two states made for an interesting contrast.
    The first part is about Illinois and the second part is about Oklahoma !

    PART 1 – Illinois“A State with No Republicans”!

    Some interesting data on the ‘state’ of the State of Illinois …
    There are more people on welfare in Illinois than there are people working.

    Chicago pays the highest wages to teachers than anywhere else in the U.S.
    Their average pay is $110,000/year. Their pensions average 80-90% of their income.

    Wow, are Illinois and Chicago great or what?
    Be sure to read till the end.  I’ve never heard it explained better.
    Perhaps the U.S. should pull out of Chicago ?

    Body count:
    In the last six months, 292 killed (murdered) in Chicago .
    221 killed in Iraq ; AND Chicago has one of the strictest gun laws in the entire US.

    Here’s the Chicago chain of command:

    President: Barack Hussein Obama.
    Senator: Dick Durbin.
    House Representative: Jesse Jackson Jr.
    Governor: Pat Quinn.
    House leader: Mike Madigan.
    Atty. Gen.: Lisa Madigan (daughter of Mike).
    Mayor: Rahm  Emanuel.
    All of the leadership in Illinois are 100% Democrats.

    Thank you for the combat zone in Chicago .
    Of course, they’re all blaming each other.
    Can’t blame Republicans; there aren’t any!

    Let us get ALL the  facts out while we are at it:

    The Chicago school system is rated one of the worst in the country.
    Can’t blame Republicans; there aren’t any!

    The State pension fund is $78 Billion in debt; the worst in the country.
    Can’t blame Republicans; there aren’t any!

    Cook County ’s (Chicago ) sales tax is 10.25% — highest in country.
    Can’t blame Republicans; there aren’t any!

    This is the political culture that Obama comes from in Illinois .
    And he is going to ‘fix’ Washington politics for us?

    George Ryan is no longer Governor; he is in prison.

    He was replaced by Rob Blagojevich who is also in prison.

    And Representative Jesse Jackson Jr. resigned and he and his wife are both in prison.

    The Land of Lincoln , where our Governors and Representatives make our license plates.

    As long as they keep providing entitlements to the population of Chicago, nothing is going to change, except the state will go bankrupt before the country does.

    “Anybody who thinks he can be happy and prosperous by letting the Government take care of him better take a closer look at the
    American Indian.”

    Don’t forget Detroit , another great example of a Democratic empire.

    With all the bad news, there may still be hope, so let’s go to:

    PART  2- Oklahoma!!

    OKLAHOMA
    – may soon have plenty of new residents!

    THIS IS REALLY INTERESTING, AND TRUE…  PLEASE READ IT!

    Oklahoma is the only state that Obama did not win even one county in the last election…
    While everyone is focusing on Arizona’s new law, look what Oklahoma has
    been doing!!!

    Oklahoma law passed, 37 to 9, an amendment to place the Ten Commandments on the front entrance to the state capitol.
    The feds in D.C., along with the ACLU, said it would be a mistake.
    But hey, this is a conservative state, based on Christian values… HB 1330 so guess what… Oklahoma did it anyway.

    Oklahoma recently passed a law in the state to incarcerate all illegal immigrants and ship them back to where they came from unless they want to get a green card and become an American citizen.  They all scattered.  HB 1804.  This was against the advice of the Federal Government, and the ACLU — they said it would be a mistake but guess what..
    Oklahoma did it anyway.

    Recently OK passed a law to include DNA samples from any and all illegals to the Oklahoma database, for criminal investigative purposes. Pelosi said it was unconstitutional – SB 1102. Guess what…
    Oklahoma did it anyway.Recently Oklahoma passed a law, declaring Oklahoma as a Sovereign state, not under the Federal Government directives.
    Joining Texas , Montana , and Utah as the only states to do so.More states are likely to follow:  Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia, the Carolinas,
    Kentucky,Missouri, Arkansas, West Virginia,
    Mississippi and Florida. Save your confederate money; it appears the South is about to rise up once again.
    HJR 1003The federal Government has made bold steps to take away our guns.
    Oklahoma, a week ago, passed a law confirming people in this state have the right to bear arms and transport them in their vehicles.
    I’m sure that was a setback for the criminals.  The Liberals didn’t like it,
    but… Guess what…  Oklahoma did it anyway.Just this month, the state has voted and passed a law that ALL drivers’ license exams will be printed in English and only English and no other language.  They have been called racist for doing this, but the fact is that ALL of the road signs are in English only. If you want to drive in Oklahoma , you must read and write English. Nothing could
    be more simple. By the way, the Liberals don’t like any of this either. Guess what… who cares… Oklahoma is doing it anyway.

    I used to own a Marlin Camp 9 9mm carbine and really enjoyed it. The carbine length barrel would zip that 9mm bullet downrange with a bit more oomph. Even out to 75-100 yards it was a ball hitting soda cans and milk jugs.

    At my local gun shop – Nichol’s Store – I spotted the CZ Scorpion EVO 3 9mm carbine. I mistakenly thought it was a Sig MPX but soon discovered my error. I took a look and really liked how it felt. As an “All–American Gun Nut“ would love to add this to my collection. With the folding stock reminds me a bit of the AR-180 concept as far as storability and concealment.

    I continue to put together a survival library that will be second to none. The goal here is to have everything on a large flash drive – possibly 128 gigabytes. Insert the USB drive into a laptop and a menu will pop up. Super easy to use and accessing all the information will be a breeze. Well – that is the goal.

    Most everything will be PDF – plus lots of video’s. The drive should also work on a Windows-based tablet as long as there is a USB port available.

    For some reason been thinking a lot about survival back in the 80’s. I remember certain products, magazines, books, and guns that were popular back then. This was all before the Internet and folks were fairly sure who the enemy was – the Soviet Union.

    Think I’ll write up an article about 80’s survivalism.

    Just Around the Corner: 2017

    What kind of year will 2017 be? Big question. Personally I am hoping this to be a BIG year – a successful year. Success can be defined in many ways but I am primarily talking financial and preparedness. Although I’m planning on writing up my 2017 Goals & Objectives here in a couple weeks a couple things on my mind:

    Debt Reduction – debt raised in 2016 though not by a huge amount. Would like to clear 60-70% of it.

    Savings – Emergency Fund is still funded however would like to increase it by 50%.

    Preparedness – complete a few projects including:

    Solar Refrigeration

    Completion of three Operational Caches located in different places

    Make contact with someone several states away via ham radio (likely 10 meter)

    Take another carbine and pistol class

    Secondary Income – establish two or three secondary sources of secondary income between my wife and I.

     

    These are just a few thoughts.

    Summary:

    Due to overworking April goes into labor too soon and serious complications develop. Always-drunk Kenchy comes to her aide. Hawkins is questioned about Sarah’s whereabouts. The deal with Newbern becomes more complicated and it appears conflict between the two towns is inevitable. Food and gas is becoming scarce.

     

    Discussion:

    The importance of alternative heating is incredibly important. Imagine 20 degree temps for days on end with no power to run the central heating system. Alternative methods for heating must be planned for NOW – not sought out later. Transportation is underrated as something to consider for a grid down event. Having means by which ti not just transport yourself but goods needs to be considered and planned for. Walking is a last resort.

    The Demise of the Preparedness Movement

    It is being reported all over the Internet and I have have heard it from preparedness industry leaders: The Preparedness Movement is becoming a thing of the past. Much like the survivalist movement in the late 80’s the preparedness movement changing – with former followers exiting.

    “Why?” you ask……

    Trump. Yes- Donald Trump’s election to the Presidency has generated turmoil in the preparedness community. The unbelievable hope and positive expectations looking toward the future has many prepper’s believing that “everything will be just fine” and ceasing their preparedness efforts.

    Hey – I understand their thinking. I really do. I was so certain that Hillary was going to be elected and that it would be the final blow to our Republic I was investing large sums of money in specific supplies just before the election with plans for more afterwards. With the announcement of her loss I found myself in a state of shock – and wondering what to do next. My sense of urgency had been replaced with a giant sigh of relief and hope as well.

    Is this hope and relief unfounded? I don’t think so. I believe Trump is going to provide a positive change for this country. I also believe that there are forces at work against him. The Liberal Left and others who are responsible for leading this country astray will not just sit by. No – they are developing a plan to get back in power and continue on where Obama has left off.

    Has my prepping changed due to Trump’s election? Absolutely!

    Regarding the American Reformation/Economic Collapse/Civil War/Revolution/Fill In The Blank we have been given a reprieve.  How much? Hard to say not knowing. I believe it is still coming so I will take advantage of the gift of time.

    There are lots of other threats existing that make preparedness simply common sense. Localized and personal economic hardship, civil unrest, terrorism, pandemic, war, EMP, harsh winter storms, etc. all continue to be a possibility for almost all of us.

    For me – it is the unknown that drives my preparations.

    Appreciate everyone’s patience as I had to take a break from posting last week. Things are going better. Unfortunately the young man that moved in had to be asked to leave. You live and learn.

    So….Castro’s dead. Yeah – old news now. The most telling event to occur related to this is how Obama raised Castro up like he may have been some kind of great humanitarian or something. Unbelievable.

    A college in Massachusetts removed the American flag as it wanted to make a statement regarding LGBT rights. Folks – this makes about as much sense as a soup sandwich. Think about it. The United States in one of a few countries where the LGBT community can carry on their lifestyle without being put to death or locked up.

    Unbelievable.

    Reports indicate firearm sales have surged since Trump was elected – in the black community. I am all for people utilizing and taking advantage of their 2nd Amendment rights however I suspect the reasoning behind this increase will not turn out well.

    You’ll likely see an increase in video’s being posted. What’s that old saying – “A picture is worth a thousand words.” Well – a video is worth much more.

    Inexpensive Long Term Food Storage: Canned Goods

    I can’t imagine the incredible amount of food every year that is thrown away because the magical “best buy” or expiration date arrives. It is really a waste. There are many instances where canned foods have been consumed 10 or more years after the expiration date with absolutely zero issues. While I am a big believer in freeze dried foods, rice, and other common foods used for long term storage canned goods should not be ignored.

    A good example of this: A 40 year old can of sweet corn was found in a basement in California and a can of relish was discovered aboard the sunken USS Monitor. The foods in both cases were perfectly edible. In fact – the canned corn was reported to no different than fresh.

    While canned goods hold several negatives compared to freeze dried they remain extremely budget-friendly and tasty with superior choices which to choose.

    Just don’t forget the can opener.

    Prep’s This Week

    Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving. Mine was very good. Weather has been overly warm. Due to a change of plans hunting was delayed until this morning(Saturday).  Things have been busy as I covert my shed into an extra bedroom and I just now got it empty and most everything into storage.

    Posting this upcoming week may be slim due to the shed project.

    As far as prep’s this week I put away 500 rounds of 9mm and 80 rounds of .223 Remington. Took advantage of some Black Friday sales. Worked toward completion of my new AR project(more on this later). Picked up a 10,000mAh power pack for charging cell phones and tablets on the go. Started reading the book The Borrowed World. So far really enjoying it.

    Checked out a Shield 45 for a second time – I like it.

Yeah – I understand and agree that 100,000 UN peacekeepers are not going to come over here and invade the United States. It’s insanity to think that would be a possibility. There are scenarios where the UN and other foreign troops could enter the United States in an “assistance” role. Well – that is for another post.

    Much was written a couple years ago about the United States Secretary of State signing the Arms Trade Treaty. While propaganda spread talking of the UN banning firearm ownership here in the US the reality is the treaty was never ratified by Congress and holds absolutely no power or authority. What this treaty has done is provide insight to what the rest of the world’s leaders think of the United States and its citizens lure towards firearm ownership.

    This past August at the Second Conference of States Parties to the ATT several world leaders remarked on the United States’s ability to access firearms. Mexico’s Secretary of Foreign Affairs H.E. Claudia Ruiz Massieu stated “it is easier to acquire a firearm than a liter of milk or a box of cereal.”  She also praised “the tenacious and sincere efforts of President Barack Obama to establish administrative measures to strengthen controls on the possession and sale of weapons” and calling on the U.S. Congress to “ban the sale of assault weapons.”  She went on to state that upwards of 70% of the weapons used to commit crimes in Mexico are sourced one way or another from the United States.

    No doubt that many on the Liberal-side of the political aisle would agree with her.

    I’m not suggesting that we have to fear the UN. All I am pointing out is the vast majority of the rest of the world looks at the United States and detests our 2nd Amendment and the freedom it provides. The United States needs to continue to stand as a beacon of freedom and liberty – and anyone who shall challenge or try to take that away should be quickly put in their place.

    So – Trump is going back on his promise to pursue charges against Hillary. I disagree with that and suspect this will not be the last promise he twists and turns into something else. He has to play politics and although I’m not in agreement – it is likely for the best. He has over half the country not part of his fan base. He needs to prove their rhetoric and propaganda wrong.

    A major part of my food storage program involves storing a variety of foods in sealed mylar bags with oxygen absorber and then placed in 5-gallon buckets. This is an EXTREMELY economical method for storing food.

    Fairly impressed with the moves that Trump has made so far with his transition team and those selected to be part of his Administration. He appears to be making selections that are right in line with his agenda as well as making attempts to improve relationships with those in Washington. Teamwork is going to be needed to get his ideas implemented.

    Silver prices have dropped over the past two weeks. While some may look at this as a negative I look at it as a buying opportunity.

    I mentioned a few days ago about my son’s best friend and the troubles he was having at home. He actually spent the night outside on the street as he did not want to “be a burden” on anyone. I set him straight that he was absolutely NOT to do that again and that if he had nowhere to go he could stay with us.

    The wife and I talked and proposed a couple of things. We found local assistance that would provide him shelter and food. He was not interested in public assistance. The other involved us taking our shed in the backyard and converting it into a spare room. The shed is larger than my son’s room. So – this weekend everything will be moved out and cleaned up. Moisture barriers will be laid on floor and walls after the insulation is installed. The bare walls will be covered with plywood.

    Some carpet will be laid down, an electric heater, a couple of twin beds, and a TV installed. LED lights will be installed as well. At some point the walls painted white.

    Home, sweet home…….

    I’m taking him to school every morning and I hope everything works out. He is going home for Thanksgiving. I also told him he is under no obligation to stay even though we are making all these accomodations.

    Right now is a great time to be a prepper. With all these sales going on and with Black Friday coming up there are some great deals out there.

    My local Cabela’s has 9mm ammo in brass cases for $11.99 – plus a $5.00 rebate per box. $6.99 for a box of 50 rounds. Wow! Haven’t seen prices like that in years.

    WalMart same with the flashlights but also other outdoor equipment such as binoculars and game cams.

    As an experienced paintball player I have always wondered why firearms have not gone high tech like paintball guns. I am assuming it involves BATF regulations within the manufacturing process. Trigger pulls are directly linked to accuracy. An electronic trigger could provide a substantial increase in accuracy on some firearms for some shooters.

    Seemed like everyday was Christmas when I got home from work. A lot of packages arrived and waited for me on the kitchen table for things that I ordered. Mentioned several last week.

    • My Yaesu 2900R 2 meter ham radio showed up. Over the next several weeks hope to get it set up. Mounting in my Jeep JK will not be easy. May use it at home for a period of time.
    • Received a ProMag 15-rd magazine for my Hi Point 9mm carbine. ProMag has a colorful reputation. My experience with their magazines have been mixed so hoping this one will prove reliable.
    • Two Kel-Tec PMR30 30-rd. magazines arrived. This brings my total for my PMR30 to four. Would like to get at least one more.
    • Made more headway cleaning and organizing the garage.

    I’ve been on a cooking binge lately – primarily steak and stir fry’s. Just last night I took a large 12 oz. top sirloin and marinated it for 3 hours in KC Masterpiece “Steakhouse” marinade. Pan fried it on both sides until slightly blackened – then placed it in the oven at 375 degrees for I guess 25-30 minutes. Added a coating of Weber Chop & Steak while in the oven……WOW!! A1 Steak Sauce finished it off.

    Seeing some great prices on beef right now.

    I’ve been off cable and satellite for a few years now and really don’t miss it. Just ordered a new long range HD antenna planning to install in my attic for upstairs TV.

    I am a big planner and every year around this time I start looking at specific goals I want to accomplish. Like many others many go to the wayside a few months in but I am going to give it a shot anyways.

    I really want 2017 to be a fantastic year.

    So – my son’s best friend had left home and was staying with friends. He is 17. I took him out to dinner to find out what was going on with him as home with mom and dad is where he should be. Well – this kid has always been smart and very well-mannered and mature. He described a fairly unhealthy home life thus the reason he left. He has filled out college applications all on his own. He has kept his job although he has no license and no car – thus relies on others all the time. He was asked to leave where he was staying(girlfriend). So – now he is here at my place.

    Yeah – fairly uncomfortable and the stress is on the rise. Need to find him somewhere else to go though I feel for him and want to help.

    With Christmas coming keep in mind that white LED Christmas lights are a great way to light up areas and use very little juice. Perfect to use with an inverter and a battery or two. Even non-LED’s work well.

    As a certified gun nut and a true believer than “too many guns” is something that should never be uttered – I am putting together another AR-15. Figured I would discuss what I am doing and discuss a few options I am looking at. Feel free to chime in….

    LOWER:

    I already have the lower. It was originally an 80% lower that I and only I and absolutely no one else machined to 100% completion. The lower came from 80-lower.com. I finished it out with an Anderson lower parts kit and a PSA M4 stock kit with buffer tube.

    TRIGGER:

    I am looking at several different triggers right now. One is the Hypertouch EDT which I have in my AR pistol. Great trigger breaking at around 5-5.5 pounds and for the money is excellent. Another I am considering is the Rise Armament RA-140. With a trigger pull of 3.5 pounds it is on the light side however as this will be a magnified optic mounted weapon that could prove beneficial.

     UPPER:

    I have done business with Mid State Firearms and so far have been extremely happy. Looking at all they have to offer I decided on a 16″ free-float barrel with an 1:8″ twist rate. I chose 1:8″ as it provides a good twist rate for a multitude of loads and as I shoot only 55 and 62 grain rounds it works. The slim rail is fantastic and inclusion of picatinny rails provide attachment points. At $279.99 it’s a bargain.

    Note: I am not a fan of attaching a bunch of accessories to a rifle. About the only thing I might attach via picatinny is a weapons light or an angled foregrip.

    SIGHTS/OPTICS:

    I am planning to install standard Magpul Rear and Front back up sights. These fold down out of the way for use with an optic. In addition to open sights I want to add an optic with magnification.

    One possibility is a Vortex Strikefire II paired with a flip mount 3X magnifier. I have used a similar setup and while it works well I am leaning towards a 1-4X scope such as the Vortex Crossfire II.

    STOCK/GRIP:

    While the standard A2 grip works I would like something that fills my hand a bit better. I’m looking at the Hogue AR grip. The Hogue feels great. As far as the stock the standard adjustable M4 works just fine however I am looking at Magpul CTR or Hogue stock. I played with the notion of investing in an expensive sliding rail stock such as this, or this – but have decided against it.

    FLASHLIGHT:

    I am going to mount a flashlight on one of the front rails. Currently looking at the InForce 200 Lumen Weapons Mounted Light. There are more powerful lights however I’m concerned with being blinded if my beam hits a wall or object nearby. 200 lumens is plenty bright.

    MAGAZINE:

    Most likely I will continue to use standard PMAG’s or aluminum mags with this firearm. I am looking at picking up a Magpul D-60 but they are ridiculously expensive.

    BOLT CARRIER GROUP:

    Will likely order a standard BCG from Mid State or PSA. I am not of the belief that special coatings add anything to the performance of the firearm – just cost. Bolts will last more rounds than I will ever shoot out of the gun.

    OTHER: 

    Single point sling adapters, charging handles, etc. – I’ve not really looked into these a whole lot. I like things simple and I have seen some charging handles out there with metal sticking out all over the place. Guess that makes it easier to grab  – or get caught on something.

    It’s becoming more and more apparent that “alternative” news sources are the places to get real news. Even websites such as Alex Jones’s InfoWars.com and  ZeroHedge.com are becoming more recognized as accurate purveyors of current events. InfoWars in particular I have avoided due to Alex Jones’s mannerism of over-the-top “every event spells doom for America” narrative. Glenn Beck is another source that I used to be a big fan of until he went #nevertrump.

    Just received in some food from MyPatriotSupply.com I ordered last week. I had forgotten all about it until it showed up today. 1776PatriotUSA.com has a partnership with them and I haven’t pushed them much but am really impressed with the company.
