Jericho Episode 15 – Semper Fidelis

Here is the fifteenth of a weekly installment discussing an episode of the popular TV series – Jericho – which aired originally back in 2006. Every Tuesday night we are watching an episode and then will discuss what happens the following day. It can be watched free on Netflix or purchased on VUDU. Jericho is also available on DVD.

    879d5fb11412acea8ce214be5b1bc38e1eaba7900f577ca9ef826094371182e5_large

    Summary:

The marines arrive with word that the Federal government is getting things under control and will be offering additional aide to Jericho soon. Jake and his father realize that these marines are not what they seem and handle the situation.  In the meantime Robert Hawkins finds that Sarah is not on his side and is searching for the hidden nuclear weapon.

    Discussion:

Loved this episode. Hey – Jericho got a tank! The main lessons from a preparedness perspective gathered include paying attention. You never know when something may catch your eye and save your life. Trust and suspicion is something else. In this episode the marines come into town with a good story. People were so willing to believe out of desperation that help was on the way and that these folks were the real deal. Desperation can cloud judgement and create problems from wrong decisions.

The “survival mindset” is often discussed and that mindset is made up of different characteristics. In this particular episode AWARENESS saved the day.

The recent earthquake in New Zealand offers a reminder that it doesn’t take an economic collapse, EMP, or alien invasion to find yourself in a survival situation.

I have really been enjoying my Ruger 22/45 Lite with AAC AVIATOR 2 suppressor. Due to recent events I am definitely interested in getting more. Next up will likely be a 45ACP suppressor(which can be used for 9mm as well). For rifle I like the idea of the .300 Blackout however I have avoided that cartridge due to the possibility of getting magazines, guns and ammo confused with each other. Possibly a 45ACP/9mm carbine.

  • Review: Imalent DN12 1000 Lumen High Performance Flashlight

Review: Imalent DN12 1000 Lumen High Performance Flashlight

Remember – this flashlight is part of a giveaway ending on November 15th – click HERE for more information.

I continue to be amazed at the technology improvements being made within the flashlight design and manufacturing industry. As someone who remembers the days of non-alkaline batteries, regular bulbs, slide switches  – and the high tech momentary on buttons on the switch – these new high performance lights such as the Imalent DN12 are simply incredible.

    Introduction:

The Imalent DN12 is a high performance multi-mode CREE LED flashlight that throws a concentrated beam of white light up to 1000 lumens and as low as 1 lumen. Yes – ANY lumen amount between 1 and 1000 lumens. Unique is its touch control system. Rather than pushing buttons touch panels are pressed to increase/decrease brightness as well as select different modes.

    Main Features:
Palm-sized searchlight with strong output and far throw
    ● Latest CREE XP-L HI LED, delivers 1000Lm maximum output
Infinitely brightness adjustment, easily to get your desired light
LCD displays modes, brightness, voltage and charging process touch switch, easy operation
USB rechargeable, charges the light without taking out the battery
IPX-8 (2 meters submersible) standard waterproof
Overheat warning to inform the user reduce the output
Low-power warning prevents the battery from over-discharge

    untitled-design-23

    Size:

The Imalent DN12 is a small flashlight that could be considered “stubby”. It slides in a pocket easily however for holding/searching I would have liked to see it a bit longer.  Length is 3.27″ inches and 1.26″ wide.

    [slideshow_deploy id=’3886′]

    Quality:

This is my first Imalent light and it appears to be of high quality. Fit and finish is fantastic. There are no machining marks and everything fits tight. Finish is smooth and “satin-like”. Lens is crystal clear and LED is perfectly centered. The charging port rubber cover fits securely to keep out moisture from rain/water.

The knurling on the battery cap is fairly smooth and I would have preferred more aggressive machining here.

    untitled-design-21

    Durability:

The true test will come with time. I have been using the Imalent DN12 for the past few weeks and have had no issues. I have charged it several times and no issues with the charging port or the single 650mAh CR123 battery included with it.

It is IPX-8 certified meaning it is capable of being submerged up to 2 meters without failing. Now – understand this is NOT a flashlight meant for underwater operation. Incidental dropping in water, exposure to rain and moisture it will be just fine.

    2016092519014285496

    Operation:

Initial impression of the operation of this flashlight was filled with frustration. The Imalent DN12 is very unique in that it does not have any moving parts as part of turning it ON, OFF, and going through the different MODES.  Rather than buttons the Imalent is “touch” controlled. Although frustrating to figure out how to operate it once figured out it is pretty cool and works great.

The ONLY caution I have with the touch controls is that improper handling can cause the power of the beam to increase and decrease inadvertently. Early on I had this happen and then I made sure I held the light correctly so as not to allow this to occur.

    Operation instructions

    1. On/Off Switch
Double quick press the upper switch symbol on top of the LCD display then flashlight will enter into maximum output, touch the switch again to turn it off.

    2. Brightness adjustment
With the flashlight on, press and hold the upper switch symbol on top of the LCD display, the flashlight brightness will increase, press and hold the lower switch under the LCD display, the flashlight brightness will be decreased.

    3. Overheat warning
When flashlight body temperature up to 55℃(131F),the high temperature symbol on LCD display blinks rapidly to indicate reduce the output, to ensure the user to use comfortable and prevent the discomfort from the overheat.

    4. Low-power warning
When the battery voltage less than 3.1V, the battery symbol on the LED display blinks rapidly 30 times one second to remind user need to replace the battery or charge it.

    5. Battery installation
Unscrew the tail cap on the flashlight , then insert the battery with positive pole pointing towards the LED. Screw the tail cap back and the flashlight is ready to use.

    6. Battery charging.
Plug in one end of the USB cable into an AC adapter (or any other portable USB adapter). Then plug in the AC adapter into the electrical outlet. Remove the anti-dust plug at the end of flashlight. Then plug the USB cable into a smaller Micro USB light’s charging port at the end of the flashlight. When the cable is properly connected, LCD screen will indicate the starting of normal charging procedure. The LED indicator flashes if the level of battery process is done, it will stop automatically.

    7. Advanced temperature control module
DN12 built-in temperature control module, adjust the output automatically according to the environment temperature and the working state to offer the best performance.

    8. Mode transfer (Strobe / location beacon / SOS function )
With the flashlight on, double quickly press the upper switch symbol on top of the LCD display, flashlight will enter strobe, if need to choose other special modes, just touch the same switch each time to enter the strobe-beacon-SOS accordingly.

    untitled-design-20

    Battery Life:

The Imalent DN12 throws an incredibly bright beam and sucks down juice to do it. How long it will throw that beam depends on lumen level and capacity of the battery. The included 650mAh battery is rated to run the light for 45 minutes at the full 1000 lumens. I would say this is close based on my testing. Running the DN12 down to 100 lumens or so will dramatically increase battery life.

The rechargeable CR123 battery is a great and cost-savings inclusion however any CR123 battery will work – including other rechargeable options out there. I very much like the fact that a more common battery type is used. The CR123 is becoming more and more popular and its availability is widespread.

FYI – your typical lithium-ion CR123 battery has a capacity of around 1500mAh’s. Something to keep in mind.

    Final Thoughts:

I like the Imalent DN12 LED flashlight. The key to its successful use is understanding how it works and proper holding. This is not really a big deal unless you hand it off to someone who is expecting an ON/OFF button. Imalent is pushing the envelope of flashlight technology and at around $50.00 this thing is not only unique – it is a performer.

  • AlertsUSA sends out warnings

    AlertsUSA sends out warnings

I received the following via email from AlertsUSA:

Beginning Wednesday, AlertsUSA subscribers were notified of anti-Trump protests underway in cities across the US, including New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Chicago, San Fran & Seattle. The protests expanded to numerous other cities on Thursday and Friday nights, with mostly college-aged social justice warriors pouring into the streets to disrupt traffic, harass, and in many locations, setting fires and destroying storefronts.

On Thursday night in Portland, OR, thousands of demonstrators gathered in the city center area and smashed shop and car windows, threw firecrackers, attacked police and set rubbish piles ablaze. Police declared a riot, deployed tear gas and made 26 arrests.

In many cities these protests are not spontaneous, but planned events seeded with paid protesters. Doubters can visit the Craigslist and Backpage websites for major cities, as well as popular social media platforms, and see the help wanted ads for themselves. They are usually listed under the Community section.

Anger over Donald Trump’s election has also resulted in a large wave of calls for his assassination appearing on a variety of social media platforms including Twitter and Facebook. Singer Marilyn Manson released a music video this week featuring him beheading a figure who looks like Donald Trump, and online video sites such as YouTube have numerous videos of Trump supporters being viciously attacked (see this, this and this).

AlertsUSA cautions readers that these protests are expected to continue and even expand between now an Inauguration Day. You are well advised to choose your words and battles wisely. The political left is enraged and unpredictable.

To the extent that I could possibly understand the actions of these individuals – what I do know is these people are dangerous. Regardless of the fact they are considered Liberals gun usage is not something that can be ruled out. The complete lack of morals provides them the perspective that anything allowing the arrival to their goal is fair game.

The big question is how many will resort to these tactics – and worse – and how far will they go.

Make America Great Again – will not be easy.

    Prep’s This Week

FYI: The regular “Prep’s This Week” post will be published on Saturdays from this point forward.

What a week!!!! Emotions ran all ends of the spectrum and ended certainly up on the high side.

Made a couple significant purchases –

Ordered an upper to further a new AR build project. I selected the 16″ Mid State Specter .223 Wylde Gen3 Slim Rail version. This is my second upper purchased from Mid State Firearms so obviously I am very happy with my first.

    16g3blk

Ordered a Yaesu 2900R 2 meter ham radio. After a lot of research I selected this mobile radio due to its excellent power(75 watts), not fan, and rugged reputation. Many in the 4×4 community use this radio while off-roading and with a tall whip antenna report excellent range. I have not ordered any additional cables, mounts – or even the appropriate antenna yet. November 29th I start ham radio classes.

I considered purchasing an HF radio such as the Yaesu FT-857D. With some recent events I don’t feel the sense of urgency to get this level of radio right now – but will early 2017. Having the lack of knowledge on how to use a radio of this type I’ll look closer at getting one after my upcoming class.

Also ordered a ProMag 15 round magazine for my Hi Point 9mm Carbine as well as 2 30-round Kel-Tec PMR30 magazines. Found these on  sale from The Sportsmans Guide.

Made some headway on organizing supplies. Seems like an endless battle. Getting there.

Started some Christmas shopping and did so with a preparedness-twist: bought my youngest a Smith & Wesson M&P15-22 .22LR semi-auto carbine. I have one of these already and love it.

Sounds like “Guns and Radio Week”!

    OK – how about you?

What prepping have you done over the last week?

I know everyone’s tired of hearing about the election but it is very relevant and will be for some time.

Now we have people in the streets protesting – and even getting violent – due to the results of the election. These are the very same people who have been calling Trump a racist and that he would bring about violence, hate, and division. Um….yeah….right. As it goes with Liberals the hypocrisy runs deep. All over social media people are calling for Trump to be killed and numerous celebrities are promoting violence.

The shock from the election is still with me. I took Wednesday off as I expected Hillary to win and with that knowledge I wanted to reflect on what it all would mean. I really didn’t know what to do with myself other than watch the news and take it all in.

Reading the comments from yesterday I agree with a point made – the fight for this country is far from over. I am very active on Instagram and the response from Liberals and #NeverTrump people is disappointing – and telling.

    flag

    I posted the following……

“America has spoken. Regardless of our differences lets come together as Americans and become that great country that saved the world from evil multiple times and be that shining beacon of freedom and democracy we once were.”

    Here are a few responses:

“U people loving trump started a world war 3 and minority wise we are screwed”

“Saved the world from evil?! HAH please, you created the evil in the world , tou destroyed many countrys .. you an you…”

“Funny – Trump and Hitler have the same policies.”

“Don’t worry – someone will take him out.”

    “F**k you!!!!”

“You are the reason why there should be some kind of test to be able to vote. Only an idiot would vote for evil like Trump.”

“The Democrats in Congress will do everything they can to stop Trump from changing anything.”

There were several more I deleted and blocked the people due to their extreme vile and hateful words. There have been lots of positive comments as well however these negative ones in response specifically to what I wrote is concerning. From a preparedness perspective and a look at the “revolution of change” that Trump wants – it is not going to met with open arms from the Liberal left. No – they will do everything they can to impede progress, create stagnation, and make Trump look bad so he can be replaced in 2020.

Folks – these upcoming times could be very trying and dangerous. Trump is not a miracle worker and he does not have all the answers. His election to the Presidency certainly should not stop people from prepping. We have foreign enemies and domestic ones that could create turmoil and change the way we live our lives.

Regardless of those on the Left and their twisted perspective and the complete lack of true honest media reporting I have hope. It has been a long time – but it’s there.

  • America Wins!!!

    America Wins!!!

I had quite a different post scheduled to publish this morning – and I will gladly delete it and admit that I have been wrong for months. Donald Trump has been elected President of the United States by the American people – and it wasn’t even close.

I pray that America can be united to move forward in the world and once again become that shining beacon of hope, freedom, and democracy. This Republican Congress needs to stand behind the leader which America has placed in office to get the job done – regardless of how loudly the naysayers scream.

Pretty much the only thing on my mind is the election. Just cannot comprehend how so many people could be fooled or are so ignorant to such a large extent that we are seriously looking at “President Hillary Clinton”. I shouldn’t be shocked after all Obama was elected twice.

Back in November of 2012 I predicted this country would never see another Republican President. Hope I was wrong.

Looking at how my supplies are stored. Currently I use many 18 gallon plastic totes. Not the most durable containers in the world but they are cheap and work. After a couple of years they tend to get brittle and need replacing. Thinking about investing in gamma lids and start switching to Home Depot buckets for various supplies.
Curious what everyone else uses to store their supplies.

Rourke: The following was originally published over at LifeToday.org.

    What, Not Who

    By James Robison

The older I get, the more significant each election seems to be. When believers approach an election, we must first understand what must be done before we can identify who can best help do it. Perhaps as important as any time since our nation’s founding, those who believe in divine providence and eternal principles must become well informed and actively involved in the political process. Christians, pastors, and church leaders must totally reject the lie that “separation of church and state” means that people of faith must remain silent, uninformed, and uninvolved. Those who recognize truth and stand for it can turn the tide.

Our nation’s founders knew that the limits of the Constitution were placed on the government, not on the people or religion. The right to stand up and support first principles is both a privilege and a responsibility. True freedom grants citizens the right to choose, and we have a responsibility to choose right. The Bible declares, “Righteousness exalts a nation” (Proverbs 14:34). The psalmist affirms, “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord” (Psalm 33:12). “When the righteous increase, the people rejoice” (Proverbs 29:2).

The only solid ground on which individual lives, families, communities, and nations can safely build is the foundation consistent with unshakable biblical truth. When the weight of God’s kingdom impacts earth, we will clearly witness the footprints of our Father in heaven revealed through yielded lives, wise leadership, and enforceable laws and national policies. The stage is set for a spiritual awakening. Now is the time for Christians to stand together as a mighty army in the face of all evil—even when it masquerades as the source upon which people are encouraged to depend.

The correct question that demands our focused prayer and active participation is, “What must we do?” rather than “Whom should we elect?” When the citizens know the what, they will insist the who makes the right decisions or put them out of office as soon as possible. If all professing Christians, both Protestant and Catholic, along with Jewish people and those who believe the Bible is reliable, will stand together, then the foundations of our nation will be restored, the walls of protection will be rebuilt, and the people will have reason to rejoice.

We must hold fast to moral principles and make wise decisions. Permit me to share some of the obvious whats to consider while seeking divine guidance. It is important to recognize:

    • As the Pledge of Allegiance states, we are a nation under God. If national leaders do not acknowledge the importance of divine providence, there will be no recovery.
    • All life must be protected and seen as precious with unlimited potential, however unexpected or planned. Something can be legal, but also very evil.
    • America must stand in the best interests of Israel against the evil forces calling for its destruction.
    • Marriage between a man and a woman must be viewed as sacred. The strength of our nation depends on strong families.
    • There are moral absolutes. We must stop judges and courts from misinterpreting the Constitution and writing their own laws.
    • Success and prosperity may be mishandled by some, but the potential for success that produces opportunity for all and prosperity at different levels is not the problem. We must keep the free market free, healthy, and bound to personal responsibility.
    • There are forces of good and evil, and they must be wisely and rightly defined, discerned, and resisted.
    • Depending on the federal government as our source is idolatry. We must control it, or it will control us.
    • The church must be delivered from the spirit of religion and filled with the Holy Spirit, leading us to the supernatural unity that produces holy harmony.

Now is the time for us to become the city set on a hill that cannot and will not be hidden. This is the time for action. God is eager to make up for the years the locusts have eaten and to reveal His love and His ways to those living in darkness, who are controlled by a worldview that denies, minimizes, or ignores God’s truth.

Now is the time to return to God. Stand up like a mighty army! Pierce the darkness, storm the gates of hell, set captives free, correct our course, reclaim the land, make God the who in our personal and national life, and point people to the what. We will never find the right who until we know the right what. When the population understandswhat to do, we can find who to help lead and insist that every who does the right what.

Every election says something about who and what the American people trust. All candidates and parties stress the importance of trust. The fact is, they each want you to trust their leadership and promises, but if you read between the lines and have the ability to discern, you will see far more. No candidate is perfect, and there are reasons for legitimate concern with most every politician. The people must control the government, or the government will control the people. “We the People” will ultimately trust either God or government. If the government does not serve us wisely and effectively, then we will serve it to our own ruin.

This is the only way out, and we must do it together as “We the People,” under God, indivisible. Then, and only then, will we have liberty, justice, and hope for all. We will again be the land of opportunity and a “shining city on a hill.” It is late, but not too late. Watch and pray—and vote!

Springfield Armory has released their version of the AR-15 – the “Saint”. I got a chance to lay my hands on it in a non-shooting inspection and handling session. I like it. A lot. At the street price of around $869 it is not super inexpensive nor out of reach for most. I have a couple of priorities I MUST take care of first – then I may pick one up.

    ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊

The amount of information flowing regarding the FBI, Hillary Clinton, emails, the Foundation – and the Justice Department is just overwhelming. It appears the evidence is tremendous that Hillary is guilty of…..something. Will she ever be charged or will this be enough to keep her out of the White House? I suspect Obama will provide a blanket pardon when he leaves office. Will she still win? I believe it is almost guaranteed.

Yeah – I’m being a “Negative Nancy” I know. Call it conspiracy but I think the fix is in. The tens of thousands of people attending rallies. The record setting primary vote. The amount of Trump-Pence signs all over America.  The number of people who never vote but are invigorated to do so due to Trump. Yeah – if Trump loses the fix is in.

Working on an Operational Cache this week to stow away at one of my bug out locations. Hoping to get it completed by Friday and running out of time.

An Operational Cache is a resupply of critical items often accessed while on the go. These caches are often – but not always – buried to hide from others. Major components often placed in an Operational Cache are defensive supplies.

Mine will be inside a large Rubbermaid Actionpacker.

What would you store in your own operational cache?

I caught myself recently telling a friend that I just could not understand why a carbine such as the old Marlin Camp 9 was not made today. I mean – Ruger made a 9mm carbine and others have. Some were ridiculously expensive but I am looking for something like the Camp 9 – reasonably priced.

Then it hit me – the Hi Point 9mm carbine. Hell – I even have one that I picked up cheap via private sale. Brand new under $300 it certainly is an answer for those asking the right question.

I still miss my Camp 9.

Leaving Magazines Loaded: Often a topic that creates heated arguments is whether to leve magazines loaded or unloaded over the “long term”. There is the key, isn’t it? What is “long term” to one person may not be to another. Here is my bottom line:

“If they must be loaded leave them loaded for as short of time as possible.”

If a box of magazines is stuck up on a shelf to sit and gather dust for a few years why load them? If a vest hangs in the corner ready-to-go in a moment’s notice load ’em up but regular practice should allow some rotation.

If one truly feels the need to load up a hundred magazines and store them away for years to come in ammo boxes real-world evidence shows they SHOULD function fine. Understanding that metal fatigue does occur EVENTUALLY regardless of the spring type I don’t see the reason to take the risk.

Jericho Episode 14 – Heart if Winter

Here is the fourteenth of a weekly installment discussing an episode of the popular TV series – Jericho – which aired originally back in 2006. Every Tuesday night we are watching an episode and then will discuss what happens the following day. It can be watched free on Netflix or purchased on VUDU. Jericho is also available on DVD.

    episode-14

    Summary:

Winter has arrived and the cold and lack of food is a huge concern.  Jake takes a hunting party out searching for food and is attacked by hijackers. Jake is pinned under a truck and Mimi heads out to find help. Mayor Green arrives to help Jake and they have a very touching father-son moment.

Hawkins and Sarah head out to find “The Old Man” and the conspiracy deepens.

A group from town arrives and lifts the truck off of Jake. The day is saved.

    Discussion:

Big message from this episode for me was food. Look at how many people were put at risk due to the shortage of food. You just cannot have enough. As I recently mentioned if you don’t have enough go out NOW and buy some. Rice is a cheap option.

Next up was the hunting party and the method they traveled. Security was certainly not a huge concern. There is safety in numbers and traveling via caravan would be much more preferable than an individual small truck.

The situation and tension between Russia and the United States continues to be eventful. Late last week it was reported that on October 17th there was a near miss in Syria where Russian and US military jets had a near collision.  How close? Within a half mile. Might not sound like a big deal but this involves two countries involved on opposite sides of a conflict…..that have massive amounts of nuclear weapons. Any type of direct conflict  – even accidental – would be very dangerous.

I am curious. If Hillary wins what will happen with ammunition, magazine, and gun purchases? Month after month sales records are broken. With that said I suspect that most shooters have bought 90% of what they want/need. Most preppers have already stocked up and spent a ton of money. On November 9th if America wakes up and “President Hillary Clinton” is the headline no doubt there will be some boost – but shortages? I doubt it.

I’ve done well putting back brass and lead as well as a few “boomsticks”. Depending on the results of the election I’ll likely be motivated to do a bit more.

  • NO EXCUSES!!!! Build a Budget AR

NO EXCUSES!!!! Build a Budget AR

Beyond the ever increasing threats existing in the world and the possibility that significant gun control could be realized after the Presidential election – having an AR-15 can be flat out fun! Although there are many models out there costing well over $1000 if funds are a challenge there is still hope.

Just one example of putting together a very useable AR is shopping the sales from Palmetto State Armory. Located in South Carolina they do a massive online business and send out great sales flyers for those on their  email list. I have toured their Columbia, SC location and talked to the owner/manager. He was a nice guy. The staff? Not so much. Regardless, their mail order business is excellent.

    From a recent sales promotion:

    • Blemished PSA Carbine Upper (no BCG) – – ($199.99)
    • Complete M4 Lower – – ($199.99)
    • Complete Bolt Carrier Group w/Charging Handle – – – ($129.99)

For just over $500 a complete AR can be put together. Shipping and handling as well as any transfer fees are not included.

Putting together an AR in this manner can be done a little at a time and part by part. Stripped lowers/uppers can be purchased and then specific parts added over time. It can be a lot of fun putting together your own gun piece by piece.

If the money is available all at once most manufacturers offer up a budget model between $500 and $600. ClassicFirearms.com is a good source.

Point of the post? No excuses! If you are wanting an AR the time is now.

Here is the thirteenth of a weekly installment discussing an episode of the popular TV series – Jericho – which aired originally back in 2006. Every Tuesday night we are watching an episode and then will discuss what happens the following day. It can be watched free on Netflix or purchased on VUDU. Jericho is also available on DVD.

    323657

    Summary:

The town’s fuel reserves are critically low and solutions are needed. Jake, Johnston and a few others travel 200 miles to Black Jack Trading Post to look for needed parts to build windmills. Things do not work out there however new contacts are made from a nearby town. Heather goes with new friends to Newbern to assist in the construction of the windmills.

Hawkins old colleague moves into the house and tensions rise. More information begins to come out as to Hawkins and Sarah’s relationship and the purpose of her arrival in Jericho.

    Discussion:

Thought this was a great episode and there was a lot there preparedness-wise:

    • Resources are Limited – fuel, medicine, food, and anything else that was purchased prior to the bombings will run out. Consider putting together a list of stuff that is used frequently and without things would be difficult. Many of these items are very inexpensive. I’m sure the folks in Jericho wish they had put back many of these items.
    • Bartering – No doubt in a true collapse situation bartering would become a common and useful form of commerce. Even today bartering is used frequently.
    • Dark Age Law Will Return – With the absence of law enforcement harsh and dark justice will be carried out. Common minor crimes today will be looked at quite seriously under collapse conditions. Simple theft or “shoplifting” will result harsh punishment.

The town meeting discussing the lack of fuel should send a big message – stock up now while you can.

Alot has been on my mind. I am feeling an overwhelming need to step up my preps as quickly as possible. Paranoia? I hope so. Who knows – maybe 10 years from now I’ll be playing with my grandkids and everything is just fine. Not taking any chances  -I suggest you don’t either.

Supplies – such as food and fuel – are soon to be pre-staged for several members. Although things are going well multiple backup plans are a must.

Another area I frequent is in Georgia at my brothers place. This is certainly an alternate bug out location and supplies must be pre-staged there as well.

I picked up a Hi-Point 9mm carbine a few months ago. It came in very rough condition as the previous owner screwed a picatinny rails into the stock. I have considered just dumping it off on someone else but I have it and it is off the books. Need some magazines and do some shooting with it.

    How to Can Bacon

Rourke: This post was originally published over at SeasonedCitizenPrepper.com. It has since been removed however it’s being preserved here in Projects for your reference. NOTE: The following is NOT the recommended method for canning bacon by the USDA.

You will need:   a large (tall) pressure canner; a rack on feet OR 2 racks and jelly jars with caps and rings;  quart jars with caps and rings, preferably wide-mouth, thick-sliced bacon,  and parchment paper (or paper bags).

Get lots of parchment paper; I buy mine in rolls at Sam’s – much cheaper this way.

Get your jars ready –  quarts will work best for this project, and wide-mouth will be easier to fill than regular mouth jars.

Remember that canning bacon works best with thick-sliced; most other will disintegrate or turn into a large blob of bacon.

Cook your bacon in advance (trust me when I say this works better than packing raw bacon, although, you CAN do that, too!). I microwave ours; but, cook it until it’s “crispy” (or, however you like it cooked). You will have to cook it up again to crisp it again when you open the jars, but, that won’t take much “cooking” when you pack it cooked.

Tear off a strip of parchment paper to hold about 8 slices, rolled up; if you get it too short, it doesn’t matter; you’ll just pull off another piece of parchment and keep going. Parchment paper cans just fine; don’t use wax paper – it does not. You CAN use paper bags, if necessary, but, parchment paper works best.

Roll your bacon, one cooked strip at a time, in parchment, making sure each strip is rolled and protected from the next strip by paper; if the bacon is wrapped meat-to-meat; it will all stick together after processing and cooling, and you will have one big lump of bacon. Good luck getting that out of the jar!

When you have about 8 strips (you may be able to get more in there!); fold the strips of wrapped bacon in “half”; trim the ends of the parchment, leaving about one (1) inch at either end of the bacon (one inch parchment paper hangover on each end).

GENTLY stuff the folded strips down inside your jars. This is where you will understand why I tell you wide-mouth is best here. You CAN use regular mouth, but, GENTLY work it down, using a spatula, or some such tool. And try not to mutter to yourself too much while stuffing regular mouth jars!

When the jar is filled (it’s o.k. if it’s not “full-full”, as in there are air spaces – that’s normal for this project), wipe jar openings with hot water. Each jar opening needs to be wiped down with VERY hot water and a fresh paper towel; fat is very easy to transfer. Wear protective insulated rubber gloves for handling the hot paper towels, but use one fresh paper towel per jar.

Sterilize your caps and place them; sterilize your rings and place them.

Now, you can process these down in the water, and the result will be “o.k.”. What I find works much better is to DRY CAN THE BACON. This is not running your canner dry – that will ruin your canner; what it means is the jars need to be held ABOVE the water line while processing. (BTW: you can use this method to sterilize tools and instruments, but, that’s another story for another day).

This is where the height of your canner is important, and thus, a bigger canner works better for this project  – make sure you have three (3) inches of clearance between the top of your bacon jars and the top of your canner, when it is sealed. So, when you put in all your racks and your jelly jars of water, or whatever, then your next rack and the jars of bacon, you need 3 inches of clearance at the top.

Make sure you have about three (3) inches of water in your canner; you don’t want to run out of water.

Use a rack with legs that hold the jars above the water line (good luck finding THAT!), or – do this:

    1.  Place one rack in the bottom of the canner, as you always do.

    2.  Fill at least four (4) jelly jars with water and add lids and rings; you can either process good, clean water (not municipal, fluoride, nano-particle drug water!) and store it as sterile water (an excellent prep item – use for cleaning out wounds, etc.), or, just sacrifice a few caps for the sake of the project without saving the water – you can use the same jelly jars of water as many times as you need. Let them cool a little between loads. You’re going to use the jelly jars to build up the height for processing bacon; YOU CAN NOT DO THIS WITH EMPTY JARS – THEY WILL ‘FLOAT”, AND CRACK DURING PROCESSING. You can not process other food in the jelly jars at the same time, as jelly jars are much smaller than quarts; food processed in a jelly jar for that length of time will turn to mush.

    3.  Place jelly jars of water atop first rack that is protecting them from bottom of canner.

    4.  Place a second rack on top of jelly jars – this rack can literally lay across them
    5. Set your quarts of bacon atop this SECOND rack. Check your water in canner – you need three (3) inches of water; if water laps bottom of jars, o.k., but you don’t want them immersed in water.

    6.  Seal your canner and fire her up!

    7. On high heat, build your steam; steam it out for 10 minutes, as always (10 minute tornado from the vent pipe);

    8.  Place your counterweight on the vent pipe; bring to 10 lbs. pressure and process @ 10 lbs. for 90 minutes because we’re doing quarts. After 90 minutes at 10 lbs. pressure, turn off heat if gas, remove from heat if electric.

    9.  Allow to cool naturally; remove jars; if wide-mouth, remember, they don’t make the noise regular mouth make when sealing, and they don’t make the same sound when tapped. NEVER TAP THE CENTER OF THE CAP TO TEST – TAP AROUND THE EDGES.

    10.  When thoroughly cooled, wash your jars of bacon in hot, soapy water (fat everywhere!), rinse in hot water, allow jars to thoroughly dry; mark caps with contents and date and store away.

To enjoy: it’s already cooked; you could just set it out in the sun and heat it up, or, eat it straight from the jar. But, Yes! It will be greasy (the paper does absorb a lot of the grease). I like to throw it in a pre-heated cast iron skillet and just “re-crisp” it. It doesn’t take long at all!

This works out great for camping (even though it is in glass). That glass jar comes in handy for storing other leftovers, as well, so, you’ll get more than one use from the jar while traveling.

It’s also convenient to have pre-cooked bacon at the ready for a quick breakfast, casserole, etc.

How long is this good? 5-6 years, if you store it out of direct sunlight, and away from heat sources.

And now you know: how to dry can bacon! If you don’t want to dry can, just use the standard method of one rack sitting in the water; all other instructions do not change.
