What Did You Do To Prep This Week?

This past week flew by. Had planned to go to my brothers place in Georgia but had to cancel last minute due to some issues with my 17 year old. Just didn’t feel I could leave for the weekend. So – had guns and some other equipment all packed in my 1997 Mustang GT convertible ready to go. Oh well.

This week picked up my new Springfield Operator 1911 45ACP. My time spent with the Panhandle Rancher convinced me to acquire one. Need to order extra magazines, a holster, and a light to mount on the rail. I really like the Streamlight TLR-1.

I also received a Convoy L6 3,800 lumen LED flashlight from Gearbest. I ordered some batteries and a charger off Amazon and “WOW!” – this thing is incredible. The bad part of mentioning this light is Capt. Michaels is going to have to explain to his wife why he NEEDS another flashlights. I’ll post a review with some comparison pictures to show just how bright this thing is.

Continued re-reading Book 5 of 299 Days. Great series.

Sharpened a few knives. Need some better knife sharpening equipment. Ceramic sticks is my normal method.

I watched little of the DNC convention. Basically the first night and then listened to some of Hillary’s speech.

Horrible. I have never heard such rhetoric and lies.

I’m gonna say this and if it pisses you off or offends you, then Piss on you. I don’t give a crap what party you’re for or whether you even like Trump. But you better make a tough decision and realize how it effects your children and their children. We approaching a degree of Lawlessness never before seen in this Nation.
And I will flat out tell you there is One thing and One thing alone that is there to stop it. The American Lawman. And yes, it does suck to get a ticket, it does suck to have an at fault wreck or get stopped on your way somewhere when you’re already late, but in every instance your Actions led you there. You simply brush off these Officers being ambushed, shot and killed and brutally attacked as well, by simply saying, it’s not here. Well to Us it is here, Indianapolis could be Brandon Brown, Washington state could be Marquez, we have brothers and sisters everywhere. Once you’ve driven the Heart and desire out of the Police Officer, Woe unto us all. And furthermore, without your own protection, you’re even more vulnerable to predators. Every city in the Nation can and will be Chicago with out one key ingredient, the Police. So keep cheering at their Deaths, their attacks, their families destroyed over what’s lost, for when its gone, its gone. That among other things better be heavily on your mind when you push a button in November.

Jericho Episode 1: Pilot

Here is the first of a weekly installment discussing an episode of the popular TV series – Jericho – which aired originally back in 2006. Every Tuesday night we are watching an episode and then will discuss what happened the following day. It can be watched free on Netflix or purchased on VUDU. Jericho is also available on DVD.

Jericho Episode 1 – “Pilot”

Summary:

Main character Jake Green returns to his hometown to collect some inheritance after being away for several years under mysterious circumstances. After running into several old friends making up different stories explaining his long absence he ends up fighting with his father regarding money. Jake decides to leave empty handed and witnesses a mushroom cloud as he heads out of town. Being distracted Jake and another vehicle collide.

The townspeople are understandably distraught over the mushroom cloud rising over Denver in the distance. The town’s Mayor Johnston Green(Jake’s father) and the local police begin to look for information on what exactly has happened. Was it an accident? Are we under attack? A school bus of missing kids add to the story and Jake helps get the bus back to town as parents panic over their children.

The town finds out that Denver was NOT the only explosion and NOT an accident. The plot thickens……

Discussion:

The town’s immediate semi-panicked reaction is fairly realistic. There is no TV reception and no phones working – cell or landline. I have to assume cable and satellite TV is out as well as all Internet access. This was a bit unrealistic but remember this takes place in 2006 and there maybe a justifiable reason(stay tuned). Mayor Green places an emphasis on staying calm and displayed leadership in a crisis.

After the power goes out panic really begins to set in. The “not knowing what is happening” and the stress of no power and uncertainty fuels tempers at local fuel pumps. This would most certainly occur and likely to a larger extent depending on the area. Remember – this is within hours of the initial explosion.

Local grocery store owner Gracie finds that all the refrigerated food is going bad but her faithful employee Dale Turner throws some in the freezers along with some ice. Good thinking.

The scenario itself seems somewhat plausible but doubtful. Could terrorists coordinate a large scale nuclear attack covering multiple cities? Regardless of believability that is the storyline.

For those who have not watched the rest of the series Episode 1 leaves so many questions unanswered.

Marking Your Magazines

I’ve recently started marking all my gun magazines. I’m doing this for a couple different reasons.

First – if I have any type of firearm performance issue I will be able to differentiate the suspect magazine from other mags for the same gun. This will help narrow down if the performance issue is related to a specific magazine or possibly ammunition or a gun problem.

Second – ownership is a consideration. Numerous times I have been shooting with friends and having common armament has led to confusion on who owns which magazine. Marking them solves that dilemma.

For rifle magazines I use a stencil with numbers/letters. As can be seen above the first few I had some overspray. I took the plastic front cover off a 3-ring binder and cut a square to place the stencil. This stopped the overspray issue.

I am using large characters on the AR magazines for easy recognition. A small number on the floor plate would work but I want maximum visibility.

For pistol magazines a simple Sharpie does the trick.

Some shooters I know only mark magazines they have problems with and then chuck ’em if the problem repeats. That’s fine just not my preference. I’ve seen in forums that some people put their initials and even their address on them. Gotta pass on those two choices.

One last use of magazine markings is to identify the type of ammunition used in the magazine. It may be advantageous to know that Magazine #4 is loaded with 28 rounds of XM855 while the others have standard XM183’s.

Thoughts on guns, ammo, spare parts

Loyal reader Lightning recently commented that it is better to have a few guns with lots of ammo than lots of guns with little ammo. I agree. For many of us and I include myself in this group we are gun nuts at heart. We “collect” guns and often use the excuse that we need them for our preparedness system and ignore funding ammunition stores as we should.

How about spare parts? How many of us have extra firing pins, buffer springs, and bolt carrier groups? We will spend $1000 on an AR and hundreds if not thousands on ammunition and zero on spare parts. This should not be the case.

Granted most of us will never see a worn buffer spring or bolt but the investment is minimal. As prepper’s we do not think of what most likely WON’T happen we consider the possibilities of what MIGHT happen. A broken firing pin will render a firearm useless.

What Did You Do To Prep This Week?

Hope everyone is staying cool wherever you are. Here in South Carolina the heat is just flat out intense.

Have had a pretty good week. Spent a lot of time on a home improvement project installing laminate flooring in our upstairs. It’s a pain and time consuming. Almost done.

Beyond that this week involved a lot of organizing. A substantial portion of my preparedness supplies are stored in my 2-car garage. I’ve needed to do a major overhaul in my organization and am over 75% complete thus far.

Went to our groups bug out location and helped unload a couple of rabbit hutches and move a few other things.

Worked on the group’s supply logistics list and also started a checklist for retreat arrival. Basically this checklist would be used should we have to relocate to the bug out location. This list would help provide some organization, reduce stress, and allow our brains to be used for thinking rather than remembering.

Paid on my layaway of the Springfield Operator 1911 45ACP. Can’t wait to get it out. Just a few hundred dollars left! Anyone wish to donate to the cause let me know.

Started marking all my magazines. I am way overdue for doing this.

Reminder: Jericho Rewatch…..join in the event

One of my favorite TV shows of all time is Jericho. Never seen it? Here is a brief synopsis:

A small town in Kansas is literally left in the dark after seeing a mushroom cloud over near-by Denver, Colorado. The townspeople struggle to find answers about the blast and solutions on how to survive. Follow each episode as information as to what is happening through the rest of the country and people figure out ways to survive in this new world.

Season 1 consists of 22 episodes. Season 2 has an additional 7 however I was not a big fan of season 2. It was obvious the budget was cut and production quality diminished.

I am inviting all of you to rewatch the entire first season of Jericho with me and share your thoughts the day after. Starting Wednesday July 27th I’ll recap each episode and give a few thoughts on the previous evening’s events.

Jericho can be watched several ways. First – Netflix members can access Season 1 as part of their membership. Amazon Prime members can purchase episodes. Of course Jericho is also available via DVD.

What Did You Do To Prep This Week?
A few things worked on this week:
- Continued work clearing out the garden of weeds, grass and plants that have gone by. So looking forward to the Fall and the cooler temps.
- Placed a Springfield Armory 1911 Operator on layaway. This is one awesome gun.
- Met up with a friend of mine who is a new gun owner. SouthernPrepper1(David) got me access to a private range so we could do some shooting. Went great and for a newby he did a great job. Thanks SP1!!
- Picked up some lithium ion CR2032 batteries for my Bushnell TRS-25 red dot. Found them at the dollar store two batteries for $1.00.
- Took another trip down the river in a kayak. Great time!
- Started working on some SOP’s and checklist for the Group.
- Started reading 299 Days again. What a great series.
That’s about it. Been so busy with work and also started installing laminate flooring in my upstairs.

Take Action: Food Storage

This is the second of a new ongoing series – Take Action – whch will emphasize a very specific action to take based on my recommendations. The recommendation may be due to current events, predictable future events, or just importance for preparation.

Recommended Action: Secure food supply supply as soon as possible.

Food. In most any widespread crisis food becomes scarce. Our nations just-in-time delivery system has left stores with very little food in backrooms. Once shelves are cleared out trucks are needed to replenish supplies. Anyone who has witnessed bread and milk shortages as a winter storm approaches understands. With food being of paramount importance to all of our survival stocking up must be a priority.

With this installment of Take Action it is highly suggested to get your food supply in order. How much? As much as you can put back. It is useless to suggest a 1 year supply if you’re sitting on a couple weeks worth and do not have the finances. Whatever you can afford improve your current position.

Develop a plan for the next several weeks. Shop sales. Take advantage of coupons. Go to Sam’s or Costco.

Here is an example:

Week 1: Sam’s/Costco

Rice, 25 lb bag – approx. $9.00

Bean, Pinto 10 pound bag – approx $6.00

Pancake Mix, Just Add Water 10 lb. bag – $6.00

Week 2: Discount Grocery Store (Aldi’s)

Corn, 6 cans – $3.00

Potatoes, 6 cans – $4.50

Tomatoes, 6 cans – $3.00

Peaches, 6 cans – $5.60

Maple Syrup, 2 bottles – $2.00 approx

Salt, 1 lb. – .49 cents

Week 3: Grocery Store Sales

Spaghetti, thin 8 boxes, $5.00

Spaghetti sauce, 3 cans – $3.00

Chicken, canned, 6 cans – $10.00

Peanut butter, jars 2 – $4.00

Week 4: Wal-Mart

Beef Stew, 5 cans – $10.00

Water, cases of 32 bottles, 2 – $7.50

Soup, canned, 12 cans – $10.00

Ramen Noodles, 2 cases – $5.75

This is just an example and not a massive supply of food but a great start or addition to someone’s food stores. We’re talking about less than $30 a week or so.

Bottom line stock up now. Develop your plan and put it into action.

What Did You Do To Prep This Week?
This past week has been an interesting one. I drove approx 9.5 hours and met up with Goingray58 and Panhandle Rancher and spent a couple days with them. I had a great time and enjoyed talking all things preparedness, politics, life philosophy, and current events with them. Looking forward to next time.

My driving and visit with them took up quite a bit of time so prepping was minimal.

Here are a few things I was able to get done:
- Picked up a copy of the latest addition of The Survival Medicine Handbook by Dr. Joe Alton and Amy Alton. This edition was just revised and represents an incredible medical resource for us preppers. It is not a cheap book but like in many areas if your life depends on it get the best. I think someone recently mentioned that concept to me. 700 pages of extremely useful information. I’ll try to write up a review soon.
- Started clearing out my garden of overgrowth. I will begin removing all weeds and grass and then making raised beds. Soil analysis will be important. I have considered several materials to use for the raised beds including cinder blocks, wood planks, and hay bales. Goingray58 has used hay bales with great success as grass was unable to infiltrate the interior of the bed. Biggest problem for me using hay bales is the amount of space it takes up. My garden is approx 25′ x 30′.
- After returning from my trip spent some time cleaning my guns. I often use Gun Scrubber to speed up the process. This time used some Hoppe’s solvent and really gave them a thorough cleaning.
That’s about it as far as preps. Getting together with my childhood best friend to do some firearms training. He has never owned a gun before and now he has a Glock 17 and an AR. Should be fun.

Video: All The Equipment Needed To Start Reloading Ammunition

I’m not a reloader and my overall knowledge of reloading is extremely basic. I have a buddy that will be taking me through the basics soon and in the Fall I will starting getting equipment.

With California’s recent gun control measures which include ammunition restrictions as part of their measures reloading is beginning to look even more attractive than normal. Reloading may be a way to circumvent gun control measures involving ammunition restrictions.

The following video provides a basic explanation of equipment involved for reloading. Any readers wishing to share their experience please do.

What Did You Do To Prep This Week?

Not a lot of prepping done this week as in putting back supplies. Had to work some night shifts and deal with typical “teenage boy being stupid” stuff.

One thing I worked on was the budget. I put together a budget for the next several months with both my income and my wife’s. Next up is to cover it with the wife and get her buyin. We make decent money and expenses have been reduced in the past year but more needs to be done. What we’re not great at is saving money. I tend to “save” in tangibles(beans, bullets, and band-aids) rather than cash. Emergency fund is in place.

I’ve thought more on doing a trial to see how long it would take to walk home from work. Approx 20 miles. The likelihood that I would need to walk is small but you never know. If some “event” happened and I needed to get home I could be in an accident or someone else could be and cause massive traffic backups. Traffic could be overwhelming. EMP? Maybe.

I am thinking I can make it in 12 hours but most people overestimate their abilities. How will my feet stand up? How often the need to stop to eat? Drink? Bathroom? Rest?

I want to try. I need to try.

Jeep developed a leak in the radiator last week and kept getting worse and worse. Saved myself a few hundred dollars by replacing it myself. A huge pain but stuff happens.

Lastly – I am going to be AFK(away from keyboard) most of the week. Responding to comments and emails will be delayed. Hopefully I’ll have some interesting things to pass on next week about what I will be doing. FYI.

What Did You Do To Prep This Week?
What a week.

Congress continued to debate gun control measures – none of which would have prevented the Orlando terrorist attack to begin with. This entire gun control debate and the influx of citizens speaking in favor of action toward gun restrictions really shows a problem. It’s a problem with a low information populace and one which has lost the historical understanding of the US Constitution and what has made this country great.

It’s a real shame.

There continues to be a growing number of people who believe if Hillary wins in November that will be the tipping point. They believe that the best course of action will be to go “gray”. Basically they will go underground and blend in with everyone else. Maybe they cancel their Facebook account – the very same one which they promoted Patriotism and Conservative beliefs. Maybe they take down the American flag hanging outside their house. Most certainly the “Don’t Tread on Me” sticker will be removed from the car. Blending in and not attracting any attention to themselves would be the norm. Possibly take action in a different manner to support their Constitutional and Liberty-minded beliefs? Maybe.

I’m going off on a tangent here.

Beyond the gun control talk – Brexit happened and both US and foreign stock markets took a dive. Financial markets are waiting in anticipation for Monday to see what will happen. I suspect we are in for a bumpy ride as other countries look to exit the EU.

My preps this week:
- Took advantage of some local area sales and special coupons and stocked up on 5.56, 9mm, 22LR, and magazines.
- Downloaded a variety of preparedness-related magazines off the internet.
- Bought some spare AR buffer spring detent springs and detents. Those things can go flying!!
- Picked up another Pocket Fisherman. These things are awesome and perfect for use in a kayak or small boat.
- Just received back my Century Arms RAS47. It had to be sent back to the factory for repair(front sight cantered). Went and sighted it in. Love this thing.
- Working on a budget for the next year. Critical thing to get financial house in order.
I think that is about it.

Review: Manker U11 1050 Lumen LED Flashlight

Over the last few weeks I have been testing the Manker U11 LED flashlight. I was sent this flashlight free of charge from GearBest.com for my honest review.

The Manker is advertised as being a reliable and high quality flashlight throwing upwards of 1050 lumens of bright light. A light with this level of illumination is perfect for searching around properties as well as inside a building(any night vision will be lost). The Manker would also do well on a mountain bike for lighting up dark trails or streets.

Initial impressions had this light as being well made. Caps threaded with no issues and anodizing was excellent. No machine marks were visible and surfaces were smooth. Impressed.

I consider the Manker U11 small to medium size as it is a little over 4 inches long. Not really a weapons light but fits great in a pants pocket. An included belt clip works well but prefer it off. There is also an included lanyard.

I prefer my lights to come on with full brightness – and shut off. That’s it. The Manker U11 has 7 modes including turbo, low, medium, high, midnight, strobe, and SOS. Like I said I use High and OFF and when on high – this thing rocks. The lower levels are good for battery conservation.

The light is operated with a single push button pad located on the side of the case. All modes are operated via rapid clicks or slow and momentary presses. It is actually pretty easy once you get the hang of it. The switch looks and feels high quality and long lasting.

The U11 accepts the unique but powerful rechargeable 18650 battery or two CR123 batteries.

If a rechargeable battery is being used a mini-USB charging port is available allowing simple hookup. A rubber pull-away cover provides some water resistance and protection from dust. One thing I like about the mini-USB port is easy charging within a vehicle or using a solar panel. When charging there is a deep blue indicator glowing from the power button.

There is an illustration for assisting correct battery installation. Ridged channels are cut into the aluminum body for heat dispersion. Embossing on much of the body provides for secure grip.

SUMMARY: I continue to be amazed at the technology that is available today. I still remember my first LED light that burned at 6 lumens. I was amazed at how long the battery lasted. Today these lights last just as long at tremendous levels of illumination.

The Manker U11 will not disappoint. It is lightweight, well made and incredibly powerful.

What Did You Do To Prep This Week?

This last week has been interesting. With gun control being a hot topic and many in Congress agreeing that some measure of gun control legislation is needed gun shops of busy. Call it unneeded panic buying or being prudent I put back more ammunition. My emphasis was on .223/5.56 and 9mm.

I also bought 3 additional Magpul PMAG’s.

I ordered a few items but will talk about them once they come in.

Oh – I am pretty disappointed with the Academy chain of sporting good stores. They have moved all the “tactical” long guns to the back. They are still selling AR’s and such but you have to ask for them. Ridiculous. I’m not sure they will ever get another penny from me again.

Electronic Survival Library – opportunity

I have been working on the latest incarnation of my electronic survival library. Using a Kindle Fire 7″ tablet I’ve loaded it with many books, magazines, manuals, guides,PDF’s – and even movies and TV shows. The goal of the project is to put together an electronic information system easily charged via solar and can be used for both reference and entertainment.

So far I’m really pleased with the Kindle. It is full color and handles all the media I have thrown at it. I can load it with a multiple of video files as well as PDF’s. A big advantage over similar devices is its ability to take mini-SD cards. These small storage devices can holds thousands of books and such. The one I am using now is a 32 gb version though I will likely upgrade to a 64 or 128 gb model.

If interested in the concept right now is the perfect time. Amazon has the same Kindle Fire I am using – and others – on sale. Their Fire 7″ model is only $39.99. What a bargain. At this price it would be worth getting two.

What Did You Do To Prep This Week?
Not a whole lot accomplished this week…..
- Accepted delivery of a CIMA Fixed Edge Knife from GearBest.com. I ordered it about 3 weeks ago and sitting on my table top it is awesome. Similar to the HX I recently reviewed the CIMA is a handy knife with a blade the is extremely sharp. Not planning to do a full testing & evaluation on the CIMA. Think I will just add to the collection. At around $21 with free shipping may get another.
- Picked up some fishing poles and supplies. My youngest just turned 13 and wanted a new pole. I kinda went overboard and bought him a nice one and decided to do the same for me. I’ll be fishing on the Catawba SUnday morning.

Panhandle Rancher……Travel Kit

Readers might be interested in the amount of equipment the wife and I travel with. Depending on how far/where we travel, the M4/M1A is traded out so that we just travel with one long rifle. My EDC includes a 1911 platform, Surefire Chroma, Emerson folder, 4″fixed blade, fire materials, and compass. I’ve laminated the attached list and stored in the safe so that if someone steals the truck, I at least have a list of serial numbers for law enforcement and a list of overall contents for my claim to USAA.

When leaving the country, we always add a case of bottled water and a dozen cans or so of our favorite soups and the like against the off chance of getting stranded somewhere. Our backpacks, of course, contain a number of freeze-dried foods and re-packaged lifesavers (a comfort food).

The metal box is a top end commercial box with two sets of chains bolted to the inside of the lid and sides so that the lid can be further secured apart from the factory lock with two internal padlocks through the chains. The big risk with any truck mounted metal box is someone dropping a chain around the box and yanking it from the bed using their vehicle and then making off with the whole box. My metal box was ordered to fit and is snug against the sides of the bed. The top is also 2″ below the bedsides, again making it hard for the yank it off artist. Of course, I used carriage bolts and large washers so there is no bolt head under the truck bed for a wrench.

What Did You Do To Prep This Week?

The most major accomplishment this week was a “Tactical Response” class I attended with Prepper Ralph(my co-host on The Patriot Podcast). This class was offered by Wolf-Fire Firearms based in Mooresville, NC. The class was held Saturday. Weather was extremely hot (over 90 degrees) and humidity was high.

Four people total took the class. Safety was always emphasized. Rules were in place where firearms were kept between sessions. Shooting using different grips, stances, while moving, behind cover, etc. was covered.

Below is a clip of myself running up to engage a threat located on the other side of the barrels. I had to shoot around the left side single-handed which is not my forte but I did well.

I had a great time and instructor David Stutts is informative, patient, and thorough.

I was very happy with my performance. Hits on target were consistent. I feel my skill has progressed and my overall comfort with my firearms – especially the carbine – is getting closer to where I want it.

Also during the week I did a thorough cleaning on all my guns. It was long overdue.

Take Action: Guns. Magazines, Ammunition versus Gun Control
This is the first of a new ongoing series – Take Action – which will emphasize a very specific action to take based on my recommendations. The recommendation may be due to current events, predictable future events, or just importance for preparation.

Recommended Action: Secure supplies of firearms, ammunition, and magazines as soon as possible.

This first Take Action recommendation is related to firearms. Ever since Barack Obama won the Presidency there have been a massive run on guns, ammunition, and magazines. Year after year historical sales have awarded Obama “Gun Salesman of the Year”. The reality is little has been accomplished on the gun control front certainly not due to a lack of desire. A Republican Congress, the NRA, and a vocal gun owners have stopped gun control efforts in their tracks.

Enter: Hillary Clinton.

Hillary leaves little doubt of her desires to remove guns from the hands of law abiding citizens. I will be the first to admit that I fell victim myself to “panic talk” and believing that after Sandy Hook serious gun control measures were likely going to be implemented. I am not ashamed as I took what I felt were logical steps to secure my supplies. With the potential election of Hillary Clinton I see right now as no different.

July 25th marks the Democrat National Convention. I believe that once Hillary is the official nominee it will just be a matter of time before the next massive sales run on guns, ammunition and magazines will begin. Thus my recommendation to secure any needed firearms, ammunition and magazines NOW. Once the run starts prices will go up and supply may dwindle depending on how likely it is for her Hillary to win the election.

There are many that say Hillary cannot accomplish her gun control desires due to Congress will not pass such laws. Folks – I don’t make plans on what is likely or what should happen. I make logical and fact-based decisions on relevant possibilities taking into consideration the impact the event will have on my life. I agree that Hillary likely will not be able to accomplish Australia-like gun confiscation but who knows? What if the makeup of Congress moves way Left? What if there are a series of mass shootings and there is an outcry for gun control?

Who knows?

Recommendations to Take Action:
1. Purchase any firearms you wish to own as soon as possible at the current prices.
2. Purchase firearms “off the books” via private sale if at all possible.
3. Purchase ammunition for any firearms you have as much as you can afford.
4. Purchase extra magazines for all firearms you own in quantities.
That’s it. Not rocket science. The four above steps will help cushion the blow of any future implemented gun control.

What Did You Do To Prep This Week?

This week was I spent a lot of time trialing my Sawyer Bucket Kit and enjoyed the success. Most important thing in putting the kit together is screwing the Sawyer on TIGHT. If not strong enough per instructions use a pair of pliers or channel locks.

Spent some time testing an 80% lower. I am very happy to report that it worked great. I installed a complete lower parts kit and stock/buffer tube. No extended testing but it shot great. The lower came from 80-lower.com.

Prepper Ralph on Bug Out Bags

So to begin with… Bug Out Bags(BOBs) are meant to let you leave on a moment’s notice with no questions asked and escape to a safe place or at least one less dangerous. Hopefully you’ll have a Bug Out Location(BOL) picked and you may even have considered hiding some supplies or a weapon w/ ammunition there. BOBs are meant to be lightweight, efficient in what their purpose is, and have as much equipment as is needed to see you through an initial SHTF/Unrest period. The Federal Gov’t through FEMA and also Red Cross states that 3 days of supplies should be enough to see you through whatever disaster there is until you can receive help. That help will typically be some sort of gov’t assistance(handout) and in the case of Katrina, took sometimes weeks or months to get to you. I personally recommend 1 week’s worth of supply, or the ability to procure it. So here is my list of the top things you would need in a BOB to keep you ready to go.

1) The bag… do not go cheap. As you know, I use the Spec-Ops Brand UAP(Ultimate Assault Pack) for mine. I highly recommend either you get one of these, or a similar bag of similar quality. Maxpedition makes a good one, Condor has brought out a “Pro” line of gear, and there are many more. If nothing else, go surplus and get a US Marine’s ILBE pack.

2) A Full tang knife between 5-7 inches long in the blade. I like Ka-Bar, Ontario makes great ones, Benchmade… the list goes on and on. Do not go cheap on this as this will in many cases be your primary tool. Make sure it is a good quality steel that is at a minimum High Carbon Steel

3) 7 strand mil-spec paracord. I suggest anywhere from 100-200 feet of it in a dark or earth tone color. Other’s like bankline, and that would work great as well, but consider this… With 1 foot of paracord, you get a total of 7 feet worth of 50# tensile strength cordage. It simply makes sense.

4) Shelter options. G0 light weight with this. I prefer a tarp set up and keep 2 ready to go in the trunk of my car. There are literally hundreds of ways to use them, and several uses outside of shelter as well. Either way, it needs to be lightweight. I’d suggest a 6×8 minimum and no larger than 10×8. You could also use a hammock setup as well.

5) Your cooking setup needs to be durable, but lightweight as well. I use a simple stainless steel pot and cup with a lid that fits both. My cookset cost less than $20 and is capable of being used directly in a fire.

6) Fire making is pretty simple and a no brainer. Buy Bic lighters and buy a lot of em. I keep several in my pack, my car, and all over the place at home. Survival is all about making life easier on your trek, not just living through it. An instant flame is just common sense. Carry also a good quality medium sized ferrocerium rod, and matches as well. I would use the Bic until it died, then the ferro rod. The matches would be my last hope.

7) Finally self defense. We are talking about survival, not a camping trip. Have yourself a good quality handgun in your pack or on your person, 2 extra mags at least, as well as another 100 rounds to replenish. I would suggest you have available at least 4 extra mags, other than the one in your weapon. Don’t use FMJ’s in your weapon since they provide the least amount of damage and transfer of injury. Use a quality HP round that you can test and insure that it work in your weapon. Remington, Federal, and Hornady are good ones, with Independence and some other’s being cheaper. A compact folding rifle in .22LR or 9mm would also be ideal, but it adds a lot more weight to your pack.

8) Water… Have a few water bottles full, but don’t worry about toting water as it weighs about 8# per gallon. With everything in your BOB and on your person, you can filter or sanitize water easily. You could also try a Sawyer Mini filter, Lifestraw, or the water tablets to purify it. Either way, this is going to be lightweight and minimal.

9) Food is pretty easy. Something dehydrated so that all you have to do is add hot water. Mountain House, Patriot Pantry, Thrive, Wise and several others make great food. Even something as simple as a flavored rice pack would be perfect. Have enough to last a week so 14 meals/servings will be perfect. Knowing what to forage along your route, as well as hunting/fishing can help you but food isn’t a main priority here – getting to your location is.

10) Cash should be kept and I would recommend $100 in smalls. 1’s, 5’s and 10’s only. No silver and no gold.

11) Pics of your family/loved ones. You may be able to provide a pic to the police or first responders if you can’t find your family.

12) A secure, encrypted flash drive with your personal information on it. Photo copied ID cards, SS Card, Medical info, insurance info etc. goes on this.

13) An extra phone charger… Duh! Add in an external battery power pack as well and you should be good. I would HIGHLY suggest you start using a smart phone. Android is the most popular system to use followed by the various Iphone models. If you have a new android, it can be encrypted and you can save hours of music, videos, GPS maps, pictures, and all the info on your flashdrive as well. It’s what I do. Plus you have internet, phone, text and voice messaging you can use, and in most cases a flashlight is built in.

14) A compass with a quality and up to date street level map. I keep a book of the entire state, as well as a folding map of the region I live in.

15) A good quality flashlight that is lightweight but very bright. Make it a simple one with off/on only. No need in a strobe effect. Streamlight, Olight, and many more would be perfect. Carry a pack of extra batteries as well.

16) 3 pairs of socks, 3 pairs of underwear, and 1 package of sanitary wet wipes.

17) Finally your medkit. It has dozens of uses and can be a whole other subject on it’s own. Should care for things from Major trauma, to boo boos and pain. If you want a good suggestion on what I carry, look up my posting on my personal IFAK.

All in all, this pack and it’s contents together should weigh less than 30#. Hope this helps and if you need advice on what to get, let me know via commenting below.
