    • Recent accomplishments in preparedness.
    • Projects being worked on.
    • Thoughts on world events.
    • Recent purchases & recommendations
    • Current events related to politics, terrorism, crime – whatever.

    My turn…..

Movies: I’ve been on the mood to watch some old school survival movies lately. The original Red Dawn of course. On The Beach is another. How about THEM!? I’ve been thinking about starting LOST  – the series. I liked it when it first came out but it got so weird.

Solar Cooking: Perfect weather for cooking something in my Sun Oven. Think I’ll do a chicken. Maybe a couple baking potato’s as well.

Sun Oven, solar cooking, SHTF, prepper

Antifa: I had heard a lot about Antifa’s Summer of Rage in the Spring. What happened? Last I saw some of them were getting their ass handed to them when they got out of line at some protests.

Large Tent: One thing I do not have is a large, family sized tent. I have a 4-man tent but I am talking one of those huge tents with more than one room. If I have to relocate to the bug out retreat a large tent would assist in relieving some cramped space that we would face.

I’m having a bit of writer’s block and can’t think of anything – except popcorn. I’d like some popcorn. Orville Reddenbokker is my favorite. The flavor would be butter and then I throw some extra salt on it. Yeah – just what I need. Drive that blood pressure up a few more points!!

Speaking of popcorn – I would have loved to be in Poland and watched Trump’s speech live while chowing down on some popcorn. It was very good and I really can’t imagine another President saying some of pro-United States things he said except maybe Reagan.

100,000 protestors in Hamburg, Germany pelted police with bricks and bottles. Cars were set on fire and many arrests were made. The protesting was over the meeting of world leaders at the G20 Summit. Much of the anger is over Merkel and globalist capitalism.

Also in Europe – George Clooney decides to move back to this horrible country that elected Trump due to “security” issues in England. Did I mention he is in favor of open borders?

Hope everyone has a terrific weekend. Planning on going kayaking tomorrow.

  • BUDGET PRECISION: THE HUNT FOR A RIFLE

BUDGET PRECISION: THE HUNT FOR A RIFLE

The following was originally published over at PrepperRalph.com

Back when I was first looking into a good bolt action, I was searching for something that would fulfill two important roles. One being mid to long range precision shooting and the other being an accurate hunting weapon.

    Inspiration

Four years ago I had seen an article about building a budget “sniper” rifle. The cost of the actual rifle was supposed to be less than $500 with a total complete cost less than $1000. Now for most people back then, that was almost unheard of unless you went with something similar to a Mosin-Nagant or a heavily used “Pawn Shop Special”. There were several choices I could have gone with when it came to a well-used weapon, but I decided to go the new route. So then began my search.

    The Line-Up

There were several rifles I had in mind already when I went into the search. They are listed:

    Savage Axis
    Ruger American
    Remington 783
    Marlin XL7
    Mossberg Patriot

All five rifles that I listed were available from the $350-$550 range in pretty much any shop you happened to find them. The Savage Axis had been the first true budget bolt action to go on the market and the rest seemed to follow. Features tended to include a paddle style safety trigger, adjustable trigger pull weight, a polymer style stock, and a barrel that was secured to the receiver using a barrel nut instead of a direct threaded type. All of the rifles were accurate. The 783 was known for being a good shooting rifle, as was the Savage. I had recently owned a Mossberg MVP in 5.56 and found that at that time, my version wasn’t the most accurate. And finally the XL7. To this day almost five years later I’ve only seen one on a rifle rack for sale. I don’t know if that is a good thing or a bad thing. Then my neighbor at the time bought a Ruger American in .243 Win and I got to shoot it. I liked how smooth the bolt was, the fit and feel of the rifle, how lightweight it was, and I definitely liked how accurate the .243 was. I decided I would go with a Ruger, especially since it was the 2014 Guns and Ammo Rifle of the Year.

    Caliber Choice

During this period of time, then President Obama was leading the world in civilian gun sales. It seemed that everytime someone burped a word about gun control there was a mass buyout of anything gun related. Mass shootings, the threat of terrorism, and many other threats sent the gun community into panicked buying mode. Going to the local gun shops yielded high-priced weapons and scarce ammunition since no manufacturer was able to keep up with the demand. If you remember, even the stupidly cheap .22LR had gone the way of the do-do, and when it was found, was so expensive to make it unrealistic to buy. Calibers such as 5.56/.223, 9mm, .38 Special, .308 Win, and .22LR were so hard to find, that many people quit shooting altogether. What was on the shelves were the out of vogue calibers – .243 and .270 Win, .30-06 Springfield, and a spattering of other less popular rounds. With this in mind, I went with .30-06 Springfield. It had fought two World Wars, Korea, and was still one of the most popular hunting rounds in the world. Even today in 2017, the .30-06 remains a favorite amongst shooters. Surely it was good enough to do whatever I might ask it to.

    The Purchase

Black Friday was coming up now… I had spent the better part of 6 months looking and researching rifles and finally shooting them. A trip to Walmart found me a Ruger in .30-06. It was on sale for $400 at the time so I was well within my projected budget. To layaway it went. Here in SC on Black Friday it’s a sales tax-free day so no matter what you buy it’s not taxed. So began an ordeal of trying to get my rifle. I went back to the Walmart to pick it up and the manager had misplaced it. To say I was angry was an understatement. Two hours later with me finally threatening to call the DM, he brings out my rifle. I asked about a discount for the trouble and He knocked $50 off of the price since the other’s in the cabinet were now on sale. Since all he did was bring it down to the sale price that wasn’t good enough. After some coaxing he gave a “manager’s special” and I picked up my .30-06 for $280!!! After all the BS and all the waiting and the run around I finally had my Ruger.

    Scope

During the same time, I had been researching good rifle scopes that would fit in the $200 or less range. Nikon, Leupold, and Vortex all had great choices. Vortex was still relatively new on the scene So it came down to the Nikon Prostaff and a Leupold Rifleman. Both could be had in the range of $150-$180. When it came to features, I wanted a 3-9×40 variable zoom, positive click adjustments and a fast focus in case of other shooters. I decided to go with the Nikon. $180 after tax brought the total package of the Budget Sniper project to $480 after adding a set of Weaver medium height rings to mount the scope…

    Completing the Project

A rifle is a fine instrument for someone seeking to put food on the table or to protect the homestead. The only problem is carrying around an 8+ pound rifle all day gets tiring so I opted on a Blackhawk! sling at $20. Realizing that I would probably end up shooting from prone at the range or in certain hunting applications, another $40 got me a Harris type bipod. My rifle was now fully assembled with a total cost of less than $550 complete.

    Shooting

The shooting was easy and smooth. With the Ruger’s light trigger pull, lack of creep, and the steadiness of my Harris style bipod, I was making good consistent shots every time as long as my marksmanship stayed on point. I’ve tried the three main bullet weights available for the .30-06 from 150-180 grain rounds. I found the bullet weights from 165-168 grains were the most accurate for my particular gun. Seeing as this was a budget build, I wanted budget ammunition. I went again to the local Walmart and picked up a box of Remington 165gr Core-Lokts and a box of Winchester 165gr Power Points. Both rounds shot great and were very consistent. The only difference I saw in performance was that the Winchesters printed about 1/4″ higher than the Remingtons. The cause I could only determine to be was due to a slightly higher velocity. There were no misfeeds or ejection issues.

    Long Term…

I’ve had this rifle build now for over 4 years. It has remained my go to hunting platform and has continued to be highly accurate and extremely reliable. The bolt has a glass-like smoothness to it when cycled. The trigger has actually improved over the years of shooting it. All of that I guess should be expected considering the round count in the rifle. To my closest estimation, I’ve fired the Ruger almost 600 times. I practice with it often and typically shoot 40+ rounds every time I go to the range. Since purchasing the gun, I’ve since spray painted it a desert brown color. It was just the hardware store special rattle can treatment. After all…. It’s a budget rifle build.

As I work to complete my next AR pistol I’m considering using a Sig SBX brace. Part of this is to be different as my last build I used the Shockwave blade stabilizer. Another reason is the recent ATF correspondence to SB Tactical who manufactures the Sig brace. The ATF clarified that shouldering the Sig Brace does not “redesign” the firearm resulting in a felony charge to the shooter. Legally this is a plus although there is a significant controversy if the ATF’s letter truly only relates to the Sig Brace.

AR pistol, Sig brace, Sig, SBX

On second thought I may stick with the KAK Shockwave. That Sig Brace is ugly. Hmmmm……

The following video reviews the ATN THOR Thermal weapons system. Thermal represents a key move up to 24-hour surveillance capability along with the ability to target potential threats 24-hours a day.

The THOR is what many would consider a “budget” thermal optic. Sitting right around $1,950 “budget” is not a word that comes to mind when I see that price but it is one of the least expensive thermal optics available.

    Very impressive weapons sight.

Spent the weekend at my brothers in Georgia. Did quite a bit of shooting especially with my Springfield Operator 1911 45ACP. I am getting closer to fully converting to the 1911 versus striker fire pistols. The reasons would make for another post but I will say that accuracy is just phenomenal. While every single gun I own has the capability of shooting better than I – the Operator does an excellent job providing an opportunity to maximize my abilities.

Here is an 11-12 yard, 7 shot group my brother shot out of my Operator:

1911, 45ACP, group size, accuracy, shooting

7 shots! Excellent. For what it’s worth – this was done shooting Monarch 230 grain FMJ budget rounds.

    I also took a few long-range shots(60 yards):

Above: Target in CENTER shot at from 60 yards.

I had a chance to check out his Canik SF Elite which he just purchased. Fantastic pistol. The Canik’s trigger was simply amazing and its accuracy was phenomenal as well. Ergonomics are excellent. Can you tell I liked the SF Elite?

BTW – giveaway winner will be announced later tonight.

Save Money With This Food Storage Secret

Next to firearms food storage is probably the most popular topic on survival and preparedness websites all over the internet. Dehydrated and freeze dried food is highly sought after due to their taste retention and long storage life. While freeze dried food is an excellent option it is extremely expensive compared to other options such as canned goods.

    ENTER: Sam’s Club

It’s no secret that Sam’s Club carries a variety of food products that are attractive to prepper’s. What is not well known are their tremendous deep discounts on Augason Farm’s products.

A unique topic that I see one in a while in prepper forums has to do with survival on the sea. Basically, there are those that suggest the idea; bug out is to get in a boat and head out to the ocean. I can certainly see some benefits. • Dismissing The Threat of EMP From North Korea?

Dismissing The Threat of EMP From North Korea?

While many dismiss North Korea’s ability to bring harm to the United States directly – there are those who believe quite the opposite. There is evidence to suggest that if North Korea has not already placed nuclear warheads within multiple satellites passing over the United States – they could.  Others suggest that an EMP threat exists at a minimum from an offshore container ship launch.

Who is correct? Who is right? Who has all the facts? Well, I don’t know. Article over, right?

    Not quite.

As prepper’s we prepare for possibilities. Logic dictates those threats that are most plausible should receive the largest weight in deciding what prep’s to work on. EMP is one of many and in my view moving up the list of possibility.

In a recent article on World Net Daily Michael Maloof, a former senior security policy analyst for the Secretary of Defense and the author of “A Nation Forsaken” – he lays out his belief that North Korea is a dangerous threat to the United States:

    EMP, North Korea, article, except

While it is understandable to prioritize economic troubles and personal job loss over a possible EMP threat – to ignore it is just not….recommended.

  • Scenario: 20 Miles From Home And Things Go South

Scenario: 20 Miles From Home And Things Go South

Here is a scenario that many of us could find ourselves in should the SHTF while we are at work.

Wednesday morning: Typical Wednesday morning. Alarm goes off at 5:30am and you reach over and hit the snooze. Grab your cell phone and check for text messages and emails. You see a post was published last night from 1776PatriotUSA.com on preparing in case an army of bigfoots attack. You think – “That Rourke is an idiot.”

After showering, getting dressed and a cup of coffee you hear on the news that there was an incident between North and South Korea. Apparently, South Korea sank a North Korean boat. Details are sketchy.

7:00am arrives too quickly and the drive to work starts. The news doesn’t report much as far as details regarding the sinking. North Korea is strangely silent about the incident.

Work starts a little before 8:00am and is another typical day. At 11:30am the power goes out. “Early lunch”, you think to yourself. You grab your keys and head for the car. Someone states as you are heading out the door their cell phone doesn’t work. Halfway to your car, you pull your phone out – dead.

    The worrying begins.

You get in the car and quickly insert the key. Nothing. You know what it is. You know somehow, some way we got hit with an EMP. You think to yourself, “I’m 20 miles from home. I’ve gotta go.”

    Questions:

What do you have in your vehicle right now to get you home?

What method of transportation would you use to get home? Walking? Bike? Other?

What tools of self-defense will be carried for the trip home?

Do you have any SOP’s(standard operating procedures)set up with the family so they know what to do in case something like this were to occur?

How long would it take you to get home?

Supreme Court gives Trump an important victory in his effort to reduce travel from six countries that have ties to terrorism. Notice I didn’t say “Muslim” countries? The fact that these countries are mostly Muslim has little to do with the ban. The terrorism has to do with the ban.

Now – the fact that they are mostly Muslim may have a lot to do with why the instances of terrorism are so high. The countries involved are Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen.

I cannot believe there are people demanding that those from these countries that want to come to the United States and have no relatives or ties to anyone here “MUST BE LET IN!!”

  • SHTF Communications: How Far Do You Want To Talk?

SHTF Communications: How Far Do You Want To Talk?

Articles on SHTF communications often dive right into super expensive systems allowing communication across the country – or the world. In my own personal efforts, I have been working on trying to set up a system for what I would refer to as a “local” communications network for my group. Ideally, we are talking 20 miles and less.

Many may hear this goal and consider it meager – “Hey – just connect to a Ham repeater.” While using a Ham repeater will allow 20 miles and much more I am looking for reliable independent communications. Efforts have been very frustrating and really not for this article. I have had some very good success lately and the retreat is currently set up for upwards of 10+ miles with no repeater. This is excellent for patrolling and inbound members. Longer range is just a matter of time.

The purpose of this article is to consider the perspective – in a world filled with cell phones, texting, Facetime, and other means of instant communication – if it disappeared today could you stay in touch with those heading up the street to check on a neighbor? That trip to the store or up the road to see Billy that used to be considered routine and no big deal post-SHTF might not be quite the same.

SHTF, radio, FRS, GMRS, communications, prepper, preparedness

Although AM/FM and shortwave radios can bring in news and provide valuable information – they are both one-way communication methods which offer limitations.

Assuming that some form of SHTF situation has occurred – why would person to person communications be important?

    • Assist in finding missing persons and pets.
    • Announce rising flood waters to others in the area.
    • Communicate direction of brush fires.
    • Communicate with others in a hunting party.
    • Perimeter patrols.
    • Tactical operations and movements.
    • Save time and energy to be able to relay information over distance rather than drive or walk to those you are wanting to communicate with.
    • Warn of impending danger.
    • Communicate observations of people moving through an area.
    • Call of help or assistance while someone is not at home.

The list could go on and on.

SHTF, survival, communications, prepper, preparedness, commo, distance

Some considerations regarding a local communications network include equipping the home with some form of base station, vehicles with mobile units, and people with handheld transceivers(HT). Ideally, all could communicate with each other when within the boundaries of the local network area, however, that is not always possible when independent of any repeating system.

The exact components I have used and have had success with will come in a later article. Again the point of this article is to get you thinking. How far are you needing(not wanting) to communicate? This is an important question to answer before setting up your system. Know that generally the longer you want to be able to transmit and receive the more expensive it is.

While so many celebrities have decided to become political and call out segments of the population as racists, homophobes, inhuman, anti-children, anti-old people, and just simply mean and stupid there are a few things that can be done in recourse.

First- as a consumer do NOT give them or any of their projects your money. They get paid millions of dollars to sit atop their hypocritical throne. Spending money on their movies and other projects is supporting them. I won’t do it.

Second – spread the word to whom these people are. Far too many like-minded folks have no idea some of the ridiculous things these celebrities have said about YOU.

Lastly – that is really what you need to understand. It is personal. They are talking about YOU. Will Smith said of Trump supporters that you are “collectively insane”. Robert De Niro, while saying Hillary Clinton has “earned her right to be President” refers to Trump supporters as “crazy”. There are many more who state that anyone voting for Trump – or for ANYONE in the Republican Party is a racist and a fascist. The bottom line is if you do not believe what they believe and support who the support, well, your just one of “them”.

So…no more Avenger movies for me. Screw ’em. Likely wasn’t going to ever buy another Madonna CD anyways so no big loss. George Clooney may be a decent actor but I’ll pound sand before funding ANY venture of his. Cher…..nevermind. Jimmy Fallon? No loss there. Adam Baldwin can suck rocks. No Jennifer Lawrence movies for me(so overrated). Arnold Schwarzenegger- true disappointment. No Kerry Washington for me.

    There are many more……

  • 13 Tips on Surviving a Protest

13 Tips on Surviving a Protest

    Reprinted with permission from DoomandBloom.net

As a Free Speech advocate, I support the people’s right to protest and make their opinions heard. Unfortunately, demonstrations in the U.S. these days are becoming more frequent and violent. From what I saw happen at UC-Berkeley, I expect them to become more extreme as times goes on.

I haven’t been at a protest since the Vietnam era, and that was just on the way to class. Back then, I was fit enough to hightail it out of there when the pepper gas flew. However, there is so much civil unrest in the news these days that it’s a good idea to have a riot survival strategy, whether you’re involved or just a bystander. It goes without saying that your objective should be to stay away from the where the violence is occurring.

Of course, if you walk smack dab into a demonstration, things can get dicey pretty fast. I’ve written a lot about situational awareness, and that mindset will serve you well. Here are some simple tips that will help you avoid injury at a protest:

    1. Always be in a state of “Yellow Alert”. Yellow alert simply means being aware of your surroundings and the people around you. When people are behaving strangely, take note and avoid them.
    2. Always mentally map out routes of escape as you walk along. Where’s the nearest side street? Is there a building or subway entrance that will get you off the street? If you don’t know the area, move away to where you know the lay of the land.

    3. If you have to make your way through the crowd, stay on the fringes. Don’t get caught in the masses of people surging away (or towards) the violence. If you do, they are deciding your movements, not you.

    4. Avoid confrontation with protesters. In other words, take off your “Make American Great Again” hat if it’s an anti-Trump demonstration. At Berkeley, things like this got women pepper-sprayed and men beaten.

    5. Have a bandanna handy. This essential survival supply isn’t a gas mask, per se, but it works at riots when tear gas is sprayed. Some advocate the soaking of the cloth with lemon juice or apple cider vinegar. Avoid black bandannas, though; at Berkeley, organized masked “ninjas” in black caused most of the damage. You don’t want to be confused with one of these people.

    6. Wear sneakers or other footwear that will allow you the most mobility. The only women wearing heals are reporters. Make sure you’re well-clothed so that your skin is protected. You’ll need to wash clothes thoroughly that have been exposed to tear gas, or throw them away.

    7. Be aware of the movement of law enforcement officers, but don’t approach them. Their job is tough enough, and they won’t be able to hear you above the roar of the crowd.

    8. Don’t run if you can help it. Unless everyone else is running, you will attract unwanted attention. Walk fast and purposefully around a corner, to higher ground, or other safe spots.

    9. Be inconspicuous. This may be difficult if you’re 6 foot 7 inches tall, but otherwise, do you best to be “the gray man”.

    10. If you’re with friends, stay together. If you can’t, agree on a meeting place beforehand in case you get separated moving through the crowd.

    11. Avoid being caught against walls, fences, blockades, or other solid objects. People can get crushed by masses of protesters.

    12. Carry some water, milk, or diluted liquid antacid (like Maalox) in a container if you know you’re heading into a protest area. If sprayed with tear gas, move quickly into an area of fresh air and pour the liquid on your face (especially your eyes). Drink it if sprayed in the mouth. Milk or liquid antacid are thought by some to work better than water, but there’s no hard data one way or another. The effects of the tear gas will resolve over a relatively short time in most cases.

    13. If you’re involved in a protest, carry a basic medical kit that will help to treat injuries and stop bleeding.

It’s likely you’ll never get caught in civil unrest, but having a solid plan of action in these troubled times just makes common sense. We must be prepared for man-made disasters just as we should be prepared for hurricanes, tornadoes, and earthquakes.

  • Failure in America: Public Education

    Failure in America: Public Education

One of the biggest problems this country is failing to deal with is education. Every politician will stake their political reputation on their desire to improve education – and also how much they already have. More and more money is spent every year while the average graduating student becomes less educated with each passing year.

While there are exceptions my experience and those of many individuals I have talked to shows that the American public school system – once into Middle School and High School levels – are flat-out terrible.

In many areas, there is an overemphasis on sports and a serious lack of emphasis on academics. I personally know teachers that tutored current NFL players and actually took tests for them so they would pass. Grade point systems are manipulated to pass as many students as possible as lower-performing school systems receive less funding. In some school districts, a student cannot receive a zero for work not done. No – if they did not turn on one assignment, did not take one test – they would receive a 40 for the grading period. Insane.

There is little doubt that a Liberal twist is pushed in many schools across the country. In some schools, the literal celebration of Islam is relished for being politically correct and compassionate. Somehow these educators feel elevated raising Islam up while diminishing other religions such as Christianity.

As stated there are exceptions. There are some great schools out there. Most teachers do as good of a job as they can within the restrictions the school districts place on them. The are many students that graduate high school and are very intelligent, well rounded, and educated.

What would I suggest? What would I change?

To start with the video above makes so much sense. The politically correct, Liberal “no one can be offended” and “no one can be excluded” mentality has got to go. Students need to EARN that which they get. No trophy for everyone. Kids can feel satisfied they studied hard and earned a 75 rather than did nothing and received a 50.

Respect for teachers needs to get back in the schools. If kids cannot treat adults like adults then thry can go home…period.

Those graduating schools need to have a skill. I would change high school so that around 10th grade it is decision time.

    You will either decide to:

    • Go to college.
    • Go for public service(military, fire, law enforcement, EMS)
    • Learn a skill

Graduating high school fully qualified to…..drop fries or operate the drive through should not be an option.

I’ll also mention the Federal government has no business being involved in education. Where in the Constitution is education mentioned? States should handle education.

Far too many uneducated victims of the public school system are graduating today. We should be providing a well-rounded, wholesome education to today’s youth providing them the ability to succeed – rather than just exist.

Few of my plants have died off in the past week. I have mixed up the soil, added a bit of compost, peat moss – and replanted. The mulching I have done this year and combining raised beds with inground gardening has proven to be worth the effort. This “no till” gardening approach has reduced weeds dramatically. I’ll post some additional pictures later.

As far as actually “no till” that may be a bit of a stretch.I have areas where I place plants and seeds in the form of a row which tilling would prove beneficial. The mulching all around it not only keeps the weeds down but as the mulch breaks down it feeds the soil.

    Taurus Millennium G2 9mm: Rounds 461 – 660

The testing of the Taurus PT-111 G2 9mm continues with rounds 461 through 660. The goal of this project is to track the reliability and performance of the G2 through 2,000 rounds. No cleaning will be done however lubrication will take place each shooting session. Should the G2 begin to experience reliability issues with ammunition previously proven reliable then I will go ahead and clean it.

    Taurus G2, 9mm, pistol

For this segment 200 rounds of “freedom seeds” was sent down range. No cleaning has been done so far, however, a couple drops of Rem-Oil were placed on the rails. A single failure was experienced. What occurred was in the midst of firing I pulled the trigger – there was a click – and nothing. I pulled the trigger again due to the G2’s double-strike capability – and the round(Winchester white box) did not fire. I ejected the round and the primer hit looked good. The round was then placed in another pistol and it did indeed fire.

Beyond this issue which I deem ammunition related – the Taurus has remained 100% reliable. No failures to feed. No ejection issues.

So – here’s the data through 660 rounds:

300 rounds Winchester White Box 115-grain FMJ bulk pack

160 rounds Independence 115-grain Aluminum case

    50 rounds LAWMAN 115-grain TMJ

50 rounds Blazer 115-grain FMJ aluminum cased

100 rounds Blazer Brass 115-grain FMJ

There is a decent amount of buildup on the feed ramp and the chamber. Difficult to photograph I gave it a shot and you can take a look at the pictures below. Once I start to experience failures I will give it a thorough cleaning.

  • American Reformation: Book Recommendations

    American Reformation: Book Recommendations

NOTE: For those not familiar with what the “American Reformation” check out The Coming American Reformation.  It is important information as this is the direction our country is heading and no one will be immune to its effects.

Information is important and in the case of a mass event such as the American Reformation having the right information is critical. What follows is a list divided up into several categories of recommended books. This is not an all-inclusive list of every conceivable book but rather those that should sit – along with others – on the bookshelf(or in the Kindle).

I would be remiss if I failed to mention the digital aspect of books nowadays. More digital books can be purchased for the same money thus it’s an attractive option. I will say that if you go that route have numerous backups as only having one device which to reference the information is a disaster in waiting. Check out 5 Steps to Building a Digital Preparedness Library for more information.

This is not an all-inclusive list – but a recommendation.

This year has gone by so fast. Mid-June already. Wow!

Illinois continues to struggle with budgetary issues putting them in “crisis mode”. An out of control government overspending and overpromising is the cause. It continues across this great country in most every state in one way or another.

FYI – I have started posting over at SeasonedCitizenPrepper.com again. If you are unfamiliar this was a website I started years ago geared towards older preppers. Over the last 6 months, I have been seeing so much about the challenges of getting older AND prepping that I had to do it. I also had some fellow bloggers tell me I should do it.

So – DONE! My plan is to post twice per week on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s. Things may change with that schedule. We’ll see. Also, have a lot of updating to do with the site behind the scenes but will take my time with that. 1776 is my main priority.

  • The Ultimate Bug Out Food Bar

The Ultimate Bug Out Food Bar

There is a huge market for specialty food bars made just for survival kits and bug out bags. I’m not talking about those 3,600 calorie bricks of cardboard that will enable you to try out your emergency dental kit. I’m talking high calorie, high protein energy bars that were developed by a Navy Seal and somehow due to the precise ingredient mix allows them to attain a “tactical” level of existence.

While many of these survival bars are great – they are also expensive and often difficult to find. There are alternatives right around the corner and down the street at the checkout of your local grocery store and corner market. That’s right – the candy bar.

After taste testing close to a dozen of the top selling candy bars(it’s a tough job but someone has to do it) and evaluating the nutritional and environmental ruggedness of each I came to one conclusion:

The Payday Peanut Caramel Bar is the ULTIMATE bug out bag food bar.

So – why does the Payday rank so high?

While a Snickers bar combines that ultimate combination of chocolate, caramel, nougat, and peanuts the extreme heat sitting in a vehicle trunk will leave that Snickers looking like something created after eating at Taco Bell.

By the way – what the hell is nougat?

Anyways – while the Payday will soften inside a hot car it doesn’t become a disaster like any chocolate confection. The combination of peanuts and caramel taste great and provide a very high-calorie protein boost.

Here is the nutrient breakdown for the KING SIZE Payday bar:

In the King Size format, there are two smaller bars in one pack. For the entire 2 bar pack, there are 440 calories, 50 grams of carbs, 24 grams of fat, and 12 grams of protein. For someone expending a lot of energy via walking, running, or physical labor this is some serious fuel.

Shelf life pales in comparison to many of the more expensive cardboard survival bars. 6 months or so is a good estimate depending on storage conditions. Running less than $2.00 per Payday bar they extremely affordable.

So – when the asteroids are pummeling through the Earth’s atmosphere and zombies are crossing the railroad tracks to eat your brain and you need some quick energy – make it a Payday.
