    A little bit of a rant….

    It’s everyone’s right to have an opinion on everything. Something to consider is whether to express that opinion or not. If you arrived at that opinion due to a complete lack of thought and investigation on your own then maybe just keep it to yourself……

    Much of this is from experience on FB and various internet forums I visit.

    AR-15 Magazines Plastic versus Metal: Whatever you want to use. Come on folks let’s move on. Polymer magazines made by Lancer and Magpul are PROVEN. Numerous aluminum and steel mags are fantastically reliable – Brownells, D&H, and C-Products to name few. Buy whatever you want and stack it deep!

    Tactical Abilities: I’ve never seen so many keyboard warriors profess tactical advice when the extent of their training is pulling triggers and loading magazines. Until you’ve engaged targets under pressure from varying factors such as intense heat, sweat, physical exhaustion, movement, and other conditions don’t act like some kind of Rambo. You’ve put holes in paper – it’s different.

    AR Pistols: I have multiple AR Pistols and regardless of what “brace” you have and what the ATF has stated you absolutely can be questioned, AND arrested for said firearm. If the law enforcement who sees that firearm believes it’s illegal then he will arrest and then it will be a massive money pit involving lawyers. Guess what….you will win and you will be out thousands of dollars. Feel better?

    Anderson Lowers: Holy crap. The questioning over an inexpensive lower versus an expensive lower. Either they work or they don’t. Anderson Lowers work. Period. Why don’t these same questions come up with uppers? Hmmmm…..

    7.5″ AR pistols: While incredibly cool and compact the concussion is ridiculous and not conducive to combat effectiveness UNLESS something is done to reduce the concussion.

    Nothing but Glock: The Glock line of firearms have proven to be a fantastic sidearm. There should be no dispute. However…..the notion that every other pistol is inferior to Glock is ridiculous. Get what you like and STACK IT DEEP!

    Politics Have Nothing to Do With Preparedness: BS!!!!. The preparedness movement received a huge boost in 2008 and 2012 due to politics. Anyone who has a concern with economic collapse or EMP should be well versed in current events related to politics.

    If You Haven’t Served: I have the up most respect for all that have served in the military. There are those who have served who very much take a “higher than thou” attitude and speak with a level above us mere mortals. With all due respect be my fellow American Patriot not my superior.

    The original “Top 100 Things To Disappear After a Disaster” list has been passed around the internet for a number of years. It remains a viable list of barter items and accurate in every way. Due to the list being fairly old and times have changed a few prepper friends and I have pulled together and updated it. While many if not most of the original items remain – some changes were necessary.

     

    The “NEW” First 100 Things To Disappear After The SHTF

    1. Generators
    Prices can range from a few hundred dollars to thousands. Lots of fuel must be stored(away from home).

    2. Water Filters/Purifiers
    The Sawyer Mini Water Filter is highly recommended and widely available. For higher usage volume check out the Sawyer Bucket Kit.

    3. Zippo Lighters, butane, Bic lighters

    4. Seasoned Firewood
    (About $100 per cord; wood takes 6 – 12 mos. to become dried, for home uses.)

    5. Lamp Oil, Wicks, Lamps
    (First choice: Buy CLEAR oil. If scarce, stockpile ANY!)

    6. Tents

    7. Guns, Ammunition, Pepper Spray, Knives, Clubs, Bats and Slingshots
    Any means of defense will be highly sought after.

    8. Manual Can Openers
    These can be picked up for as little as $1.00 each.

    9. Sweeteners such as sugar and honey.

  • Recipe: Steakburger Hamburger

    Recipe: Steakburger Hamburger

     

    The “perfect hamburger” is often discussed with everyone having their own recipe that tops all others. Well….here’s mine.

    I’ve been making hamburgers mixing A1 Steak Sauce in with the meat for the past few years. Fantastic.  Grilled on a gas grill or charcoal that is up to you.

    a1 steak sauce, burger, steakburger,

    Ingredients

    2 pounds hamburger meat – ground chuck or whatever choice you wish

    3-4 tablespoons A1 Steak Sauce

    1/2 teaspoon Weber Steak & Chop seasoning or similar steak seasoning

    a1 steak sauce, recipe, burger, a1

    Instructions

    • Combine all ingredients in a bowl
    • Form 6 patties pinching each in the center to make the middle thinner(helps even cooking)
    • Place on grill over medium heat
    • Turn every 5-6 minutes until done

     

    Recipe Tip: A1 Steak Sauce can be added at whatever amount needed to provide desired taste. If too much is added the mix will be overly moist and will not hold together when cooked.

    Cars as Weapons: I predict that cars will be used as weapons more and more into the future both here and abroad. Construction of new buildings will begin to have barriers as standard equipment to protect inhabitants. Malls, shopping centers, schools, and government buildings will start the installation of barriers as preventive measures against the growing trend.

    More on Organizing & Communication: I had someone suggest creating a forum awhile back and charge a small monthly fee to join. The reason for the small fee it to keep the more serious folks in it and the “browsers” out. If they are not willing to pay $3.00 per month then they may not be too serious about it. I don’t know. It is not secure and there would need to be some way of vetting those coming in. This is a more public way of getting like-minded folks together.

    Facebook Alternative: Capt Michaels sent me a link to “Gab“. Gab is a social media platform that was created due to the free speech bias on most social media platforms. I have set up an account but not looked around much yet.

    Pulled up most everything out of the garden except eggplants, peppers, and okra. The second round of plantings did not pan out too well. The heat and intense sun really did a number on cucumber and squash plants.

    In my area, there are signs on the highway warning of severe traffic on Monday – due to the eclipse. I live in an area that runs right along with the best visibility for the eclipse this many will be traveling through here. I’m thinking of taking Monday off from work so I don’t need to deal with the possible congestion.

    As of this writing, Amazon has the KMASHI 10,000mAh Battery Power Bank on sale for only $11.99. This is a heck of a bargain and as a very happy user of two of them, I just ordered a third. Perfect to have in a glove box or purse to charge phones.

    Great comments and discussions lately. Appreciate it. Let’s keep it going.

    Had lunch with five co-workers yesterday and current events came up. I mentioned “Antifa” and only one knew what “Antifa” was. Folks – that is a big problem. They all have heard about the racists in Charlottesville but only one knew about the other groups there.

    Excellent evidence the MSM’s agenda is being played well.

    Here’s a question that GG58 has brought up several times and I’ll throw it out there now. I don’t think it has been satisfactorily answered and I cannot say I have the answer. At least not completely.

    How do we get organized?

    Yes – that’s it. I’m talking Patriots. I’m talking the anti-Antifa. I’m talking those who wish to take this country back.

    While the Left is organizing, creating flags, raising money, getting training, and making progress – what of the Right? It’s not happening at least I’m not seeing it. Sure – Trump won the Presidency. It’s easy for folks to walk into a booth and vote in complete privacy. What about protesting? What about standing up for whats right and being heard? What about fighting for the country you believe in?

    As stated I don’t have the answers. I question whether the organization can be done to any national level or even state level. Why? The Progressive Left as a group is much more single-minded in their beliefs and desires. On the Right things like “principle”, “rights”, and “laws” have meaning. The Right have various opinions and while although similar – they are different and many stand on principle without a willingness to compromise. With that said – the Right remains unorganized or at least compared to many on the Left.

    The answer is out there. I can tell you many on the Right fear being too outspoken as they may be paid a visit by law enforcement. I’ve had people email me and send me messages saying “be careful” with how I say things and what I may suggest. First Amendment, right? There are many out there speaking MUCH more radical than I ever have. I’m not worried.

    How about the renewal of The Tea Party movement?

    Maybe.

    Well, my efforts to unplug from politics for a couple weeks failed miserably. The situation in Charlottesville and pathetic responses to Trump’s comments regarding it are driving me crazy:

    “We condemn in the strongest possible terms this egregious display of hatred, bigotry and violence on many sides.”

    “Racism is evil. And those who cause violence in its name are criminals and thugs, including KKK, Neo-Nazis, White Supremacists, and other hate groups are repugnant to everything we hold dear as Americans. Those who spread violence in the name of bigotry strike at the very core of America.”

    Somehow the MSM, Liberals, and RINO’s are finding that Trump failed to appropriately respond and place blame in the events in Charlottesville.

    Unbelievable.

    There is a movement that is somewhat tied to preparedness and self-reliance and it is all about minimalism. Basically getting by and living a full life and existence with as little as possible. I came across the YouTube channel IAmJake  and his video about living in his Jeep for one year.   Being a Jeep owner it certainly caught my attention.

    In the video below Jake discusses his set up and how he will live in his Jeep. Pretty impressive and some good ideas can be pulled from it when it comes to a bug out vehicle.

    I’ve often said that a vehicle can be an incredible survival tool that most just do not think about. It can provide shelter, power, heating, cooling, and also information. Yes – fuel is needed and there is always a risk of breakdown.

    For those anticipating a complete breakdown of the economy, “bartering” is something that should be planned. Before diving into the list I’ll mention a couple things that generally stir up controversy.

    First – the bartering of firearms and ammunition generally creates a huge argument. Why? The thought behind this is you’ll trade a firearm and/or ammunition and the recipient will turn it around and use it to take all your stuff. Sure – it’s possible. It’s also possible that the trade could be conducted safely and with minimal risk.

    Second – the bartering of food creates almost as much craziness and the previous. Some people scoff at the idea of bartering food as they believe that you’re trading away your very salvation. I totally disagree as you would not and should not conduct the trade unless there were sufficient stores of food which to do so safely.

    Third – discussions on silver and gold as barter items create enemies as opinions from most fall on either end of the YES/NO spectrum. I’m avoiding that here – and would appreciate it if you would as well.

    3. Candles – Candles provide those in need with light, fire, and warmth. While very inexpensive now the demand and corresponding value in more desperate times will rise dramatically.

    4. Alcohol – While some may find the inclusion of drinkable alcohol morally wrong it remains a fact that a shortage of supply will increase its value.

    5. Flashlight & Batteries – Grid down the night will be…well…very dark. There are very inexpensive LED flashlights that run on a single AA alkaline battery. Perfect for bartering.

    6.  Matches – Matches packed in 32 count boxes will be worth their weight in gold. Small in size these boxes may be a form of currency at some point.

    7. First Aid Supplies – Triple antibiotic ointment, band-aids, antibiotics, etc. will be very valuable. Purchasing multiples of small general purpose first aid kits would be an excellent pre-packaged barter item. Cough/multi-symptom flu medicine during seasonal sickness times extremely valuable.

    8. Cordage – A variety of cordage from twine to rope would be beneficial. If I had to choose one type it would be para-cord due to its cost and strength.

    9. Bar Soap – Bar soap goes a long way and does a great job cleaning the body. Extremely inexpensive combined with a great shelf life soap is a fantastic barter item.

    10. Feminine Hygiene Products – ’nuff said.

    11. Water Filters – Individual water filters such as the LifeStraw and Sawyer Mini Water Filter will be extremely valuable should clean running water cease. Larger family-size filters such as the Big Berkey and the LifeStraw Family.

    12. Hard Candy – Something so simple will have high demand on the barter market. What an incredible treat to have – or get for someone you love – when it is no longer manufactured.

    While this list suggests these 12 items as high-value bartering tools they are not alone. There are countless valuable items that could take the place of any of those listed above.

    Appreciate the positive comments on how the site is going. Trying to get it a little more polished and organized. If willing those on social media I would appreciate your sharing of posts on Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, Instagram, Google+, etc. If you are a member of any prepper Facebook groups sharing there would be great. Sharing posts in survival & preparedness forums is also a way to spread the word. If 1776PatriotUSA is to get taken to the next level – I’m not the one who will take it there. It will be you.

    The section at the bottom below the posts has been developed over the past couple weeks. Someone asked how long it had been there. I’ve tried to find a way to show my Instagram feed and this is the best way so far. I’m an Instagram junky.

    Lastly, I am an avid Audible user. I listen to audio books every single day and over the last year or so have “read” more than 50 books all thanks to Audible. Just finishing up What’s Left of My World. Very good. As I finish each book and move on to the next I’ll change the image at the bottom of this website.

    Charlottesville: The unfortunate situation in Charlottesville is the result of a certifiable nutcase. Every political party has their nut cases and these racist white nationalists are no different than their Antifa siblings.

    It’s worth noting that those of us who believe we are on an inevitable path towards a second civil war – or an American Reformation – are observing this event as just one that will go down in history as the footsteps to bigger battles.

    Also worth noting Trump came out and condemned the violence and the hate – while Obama sought understanding for the BLM movement and destructive protestors in Ferguson. The hypocrisy is overwhelming and the #fakenews ignores it.

    The uproar over the Sig P320 “can fire when dropped” report is ridiculous. A problem? I guess – especially if you frequently drop your pistol at just the right angle with just the right pressure. It will be fixed. The origin of the insanity are those people upset that Sig was awarded the military contract in the first place. Don’t like the Sig? Don’t buy one.

    I have to say the ability to use the P320 as a pistol or a grenade is pretty useful feature though!!  🙂

    FYI – I shot a few rounds Saturday out of the Taurus PT-111 G2 9mm as I head towards 2,000 rounds. One of the ammo choices was the Winchester Train & Defend hollow point as pictured below. It has a fairly large hole in the hollow point and was pretty sure it would not feed. Results? No problem. 25 rounds was the limit of the test but every round fired.

    Building a Simple & Inexpensive Raised Bed Garden

    Gardening is one of the Top 5 Prepper Skills I recommend people learn. It can be both extremely rewarding – and fairly frustrating. I’ve been gardening for close to 15 years in my backyard using a 25′ x 30′ foot in-ground spot as well as buckets, raised beds, and various containers.

    For many, space is lacking and soil is questionable. It is important to get started NOW to learn gardening and get your spots ready. Soil can be improved over time – and it can be made worse. The point is the sooner you start the better off you’ll be.

    For many, raised beds offer a quick and simple way to get started. There are a lot of positives with raised beds such as being able to place them pretty much anywhere that will get sufficient sun.

    Here is a simple, easy method for building a raised bed garden:

     

    Needed Supplies:

    1     12-foot board – or an 8-foot and 4-foot(width of board determines height of raised bed. I recommend no less than a 6″ inch board)

    8     nails or screws 2″+ in length

     

    Needed Tools:

    1     saw (jig saw or table saw will work)

    1     ruler

    1     pen or pencil

    1     drill or hammer

    1     drill bit slighter smaller than whatever size nail/screw selected

     

    Steps to Building a Simple & Inexpensive Raised Bed Garden

    The first thing to do is get everything together in one place. Make sure batteries are charged and power tools are plugged in.

     

    Next – we need to create two 4-foot pieces. If you have an 8-foot board simply mark it off and cut it in half. If you have a longer 12-foot piece mark off 4 foot – cut it, then mark another 4 foot and cut again.

    Either way, there should be a single 4-foot piece left at this point. Measure its length and cut it in half.

    Above – a total of 4 pieces should be available. Two should measure 4 feet and the other two 2 feet.

     

    Pre-drill the holes for the screws/nails. This step is not necessary but helpful to reduce the chance the wood will split.

     

    Now – go ahead and screw all the boards together in a rectangle shape. Make sure the longer boards are set on the outside of the short boards for each side or the rectangle will be off.

     

    Your finished product should look like the photo above. Now simply place the raised bed wherever you wish, fill with soil – and plant some seeds or plants.

    This project is not complicated and it’s not rocket science. I considered generalizing the instructions without all the pictures and lists but decided to make it a bit more detailed. The size of the bed can be easily adjusted to whatever you wish. 4′ x 8′ beds work well. Going longer has its advantages but going wider makes it difficult to reach in and pick.

    Soil? That’s always a question and searching on the internet you’ll come up with all kinds of concoctions. I can only tell you what has worked for me and your mileage may vary:

    1/3 composted cow manure(Black Kow brand if you can get it)

    1/3 peat moss

    1/3 natural soil from area

    The above formula is pretty much what I have been using for the past few years and it has worked well. A high-quality potting soil can be substituted for the peat moss or use it with everything else if you wish.

    There is a lot of talk about “Mel’s Mix” on the net if you do a search for raised beds. It might work – but it is EXPENSIVE! I’ll pass.

    When growing vegetables in raised beds here are two tips to keep in mind:

    1. WATER: You need to WATER MORE OFTEN than in-ground gardens. In a raised bed gravity naturally pulls the water from the soil thus daily – and even twice daily watering – may be needed. I’ve seen many gardens start off looking good and then hear complaints stuff didn’t grow. Reason? Lack of water. The larger the raised bed the less of an issue this is.
    2. MULCHING: Mulching is a huge benefit to decreasing moisture loss through evaporation and reducing weed growth. I’ve used grass clippings, dead leaves, pine bark, and local city mulch available to the public. Be careful with grass clippings as if any of the cut grass grew enough to have seed you just planted them in your raised bed.

    Survival Recipe: No Bake Survival Cookies

    Asteroids could be crashing through the atmosphere and zombies moaning in the streets – many of us will still crave something sweet. Food items like these Peanut Butter/Chocolate No Bake Cookies would serve as a great morale booster in high-stress times.

    Notice something about the ingredient list below. They can all be stored as part of a food storage system. This recipe is something that can be completed with supplies from most food storage programs.

    Ingredients

    2 cups sugar
    1/2 cup milk
    1/2 cup butter
    4 tbsp cocoa
    1/2 cup peanut butter
    3 cups oats (I use whole grain oats rather than quick oats)
    1 tsp vanilla extract

    Instructions

    1. Combine and mix sugar, milk, and cocoa powder then bring to a boil
    2. Boil above for 1 minute, add peanut butter and vanilla, mix thoroughly
    3. Add oatmeal
    4. Mix well
    5. Using a tablespoon scoop mixture out onto wax paper
    6. Allow to cool
    7. Eat up!!!

    These cookies are high in calories – with a good amount of protein and carbs.

    So….when the SHTF it doesn’t have to be all about MRE’s and freeze-dried foods – these Peanut Butter/Chocolate No Bake Cookies would be a welcome treat.

    North Korea: Can’t help but have this on my mind a bit but I’m not overly concerned. Maybe that is a bad sign as there’s been numerous things I’ve been on “high alert” about and nothing transpired.

    Completed my latest AR pistol build. Had an issue with getting the bolt catch pin inserted. It just wouldn’t go. Had to “repeal and replace” it with a new pin. I purchased some special tools off eBay to help with that installation and it went much smoother.

    Lightweight AR Build Update: I have almost all the components to put together this latest project. This is certainly a budget build so really curious what the weight will end up being. 5 pounds is the goal but not sure how close I’ll get. Standard M4 weight at around 6.5 pounds shaving 1.5 pounds is doable but we’ll see.

    I’ve seen many stories of people who use wood to cook and heat with – via open flame – developing respiratory issues. Stories out of Venezuela are confirming this issue as well. The constant breathing of smoke creates a raspy voice and eventually breathing issues.

    I haven’t been promoting GearBest.com recently because….well….just because. I haven’t ordered anything from them in a little while so not much to say. They are still a great source for certain items to save some money if willing to wait on the shipping. For those not aware GearBest.com primarily ships products directly from China. Don’t want to buy Chinese products? No problem. There are many products that cannot be purchased as American-made. So rather than buy a 10,000 mAh backup charger from Wal-Mart I order direct from GearBest and save.

    I actually just ordered a 10,000 mAh mobile battery bank. I have several of these in packs, cars, etc. My kids love ’em.

    I helped my youngest with a science fair project a few years ago and we tested several brands of batteries. I discovered that the Member’s Mark battery lasted longer than all the others. Most expensive doesn’t mean the best.

    News just broke that North Korea has now miniaturized at least one nuclear warhead which expands the threat potential. It seems like they have advanced so fast so quick. Throwing my tin foil hat on would have me use words like “false flag” – so I won’t do that. I just hope cooler heads will prevail. If any military action takes place North Korea could reign pure hell on South Korea.

    A dangerous event is occurring. Not only do we have Liberals in the form of Antifa and other swine spewing hate and violent talk – I am seeing a movement with Conservatives in a similar fashion. Folks – I never promote violence except when common sense requires it in the self-defense of one’s life – or the protection of another. The constant upping of rhetoric to new heights is inflaming division and leads us in the direction of the coming American Reformation.

    When I was a teenager I loved watching Chuck Norris and other action movies. Watching them now I find myself constantly criticizing the ridiculous tactics displayed. I just need to relax and enjoy the movie.

    Hunting season is fast approaching. Typically a buddy of mine is a member of a hunt club and my son and I tag along around Thanksgiving. This year he did not join. I’m not real keen on tracking over public land with every Jim Bob and Uncle Cleatus kneeling behind tree’s chugging down some Jack. If I don’t find another person to take me on private land I’ll likely go to Georgia to my brother’s place. Out of state costs would be $130 plus $8.00 each additional day. Would make for a fun trip. He has 40+ acres.

    The prepper definition of the word “tangibles” –

    A physical item which when owned provides security and advantages to the owner in the event of some type of disaster.

    Typically tangibles are things like food, water filters, firearms, ammunition, tools, fuel, firewood, etc. Many believe in investing in tangibles rather than non-tangibles such as stocks, bonds, and mutual funds.

    A friend at work took his CWP class over the weekend. He recently bought him and his wife their first gun – a .38 Special revolver. Excellent choice. The .38 Special revolver is rarely discussed as a self-defense tool but excels in that arena. Most self-defense situations are at very close range and last a matter of seconds.

    For the more experienced shooter the simple and near perfect reliability the revolver makes so much sense.

    It’s interesting the number of people who have expressed their “dissatisfaction” with my stance on transgenders in the military. I am being told that they have lost transgender friends in combat. Well – it is what it is. I’m offended by a great many things and the disallowance of transgenders in the military – or a Tweet – is not on the list. I should be asking them if they were offended all the years Obama didn’t allow them to serve either.

    Watched the movie The Circle starring Tom Hanks and Emma Watson. It was very good. The movie provides a realistic glimpse into the not too distant future where technology – offering safety and security – invades peoples lives to the point that NOTHING is private.

  • Recipe: Foil Wrapped Garlic Steak & Potato

    Recipe: Foil Wrapped Garlic Steak & Potato

    Note: My wife introduced me to this recipe after seeing it over at Lecremedelacrumb.com.

    This oven or grill steak and potato recipe offers up some savory flavors and can be easily modified depending upon available ingredients.

    Growing up in a meat and potato family(and pasta every Wednesday), this recipe has become a frequent offering at the dinner table.

    Juicy, tender steak with potatoes and an assortment of flavorings including GARLIC  – can’t get much better.

    A few notes:

    • The rarer you desire the steak to be the larger the pieces should be cut.
    • Generally, chunks should be between 1″ – 2″ cubes.
    • Total cook time should be around 20 – 30 minutes.

     

    Ingredients

    • 2-2½ pounds top sirloin steak, trimmed of fat and cut into cubes
    • 1 pound baby yellow potatoes, quartered or halved
    • 3 tablespoons olive oil
    • salt and pepper, to taste
    • 1 tablespoon minced garlic
    • 1 teaspoon onion powder
    • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
    • 1 teaspoon dried parsley
    • 1 teaspoon dried thyme

    Note: Weber CHOP ‘N STEAK Seasoning is a multi-use seasoning that can be used if all flavoring ingredients are unavailable.

     

    Instructions

    1. Combine potatoes, steak, olive oil, salt, pepper, garlic, and seasonings in a large bowl.
    2. Tear off four 12 x 12-inch sheets of aluminum foil or 12 x 24 inch to double wrap. Divide steak and potatoes between all four sheets and wrap the foil tightly.
    3. Grill over high heat for approx 20-25 minutes or bake in oven at 425 degrees for 20-25 minutes.
    4. Additional spices can be added by opening the foil packets and add as desired.
     I like boiling or microwaving my potatoes a bit prior to grilling to make sure they are completely done when the steak reaches perfection.
    Give it a try.

    It’s interesting that nowadays prepping is far more accepted than prior to 2008/2012 time frames.

    45 degree AR sights: A question was asked on a Facebook AR-15 forum as to whether or not 45 degree offset sights were good or not. My own opinion was that no – they were more of a fad or “tacticool” than anything. Of course, I was attacked immediately which is why I rarely comment on these sites.

    Sure – they have a use. My answer was too general I know but this was FB and I had no reason to invest my time into a complete answer. For a very specific use, they could be beneficial. For the average AR unless substantial training will be applied to this setup I don’t think it’s worth it.

    Now – a high magnification scope mounted on an AR or any other weapon system doesn’t lend itself well to CQC. That is where these sights could come in handy. Beyond that – I’ll pass.

    I swear I can feel Fall in the air.

    So I like the way my Condor T&T EDC kit came out. Riding in the back of the Jeep it and all its contents will be there if needed. I am looking at changing out my Get Home Bag from the backpack version featured in the Projects section to more of a shoulder bag. My typical distance from home is 20 miles or less at any given time. Lighter is better for me.

    Other than building AR’s I have put a stop on purchasing guns….at least for now. The money equation isn’t adding up. I would really like to get a Sig P320 and get some trigger time with it. We’ll see.

    So the DOW hits a record 22,000. Get ready folks. There is a correction coming. It may be in a month. It may be in three years. It’s coming and will be BIG. The stock market is inflated to 22,000 and nothing but HOPE to keep it up.

    Took off Monday and Tuesday from work to get a few things done. As usual failed to complete as many projects as desired. My youngest and I did pick up some fishing supplies on clearance at a local store and went out on the river Tuesday afternoon.

    I used to criticize those that stated they refused to vote as it really didn’t make any difference. While I have not gone completely to the Dark Side it is pretty apparent that getting a full Republican majority in Congress AND a Republican President has not created “change we can believe in.” At least not yet.

    It’s pretty pathetic. The tremendous ideas that have come out of the Conservative movement should be passing left and right – rather than continuing to be just ideas.

    Let’s remember the three Senators who voted against the Obamacare repeal:

    Collins(Maine)

    Murkowski(Alaska)

    When I think back to the YK2 end of the world prediction I cannot imagine how disappointed some people were at 12:01AM when nothing – not a thing – happened. It’s not that I am suggesting that most people wished for bad stuff to happen but the massive build up to that time – and then nothing.

    I came across a guy on Facebook who criticized my purchasing of alkaline and lithium ion batteries. I stock up on A LOT of them. He basically said that I was wasting my money as I should ONLY buy rechargeable batteries.

    I have found that preppers fall into a few categories. The “hardcore” all in or “you might as well kiss your ass goodbye” type. If you do not have XX gun and XX years of food – well-  you’re just a wanna be.These are the same folks who will NOT live their life and experience all that the world has to offer because they BELIEVE something might happen. It MIGHT happen.

    I don’t fit into that category. People have predicted DOOM for hundreds of years and as far as the apocalypse – not happened yet. Now tomorrow is another day and threats continue to exist and build so I prepare. I also live my life and enjoy going to the movies, kayaking down the river, and buying my alkaline batteries.

    By the way – I have rechargeables as well.

    Whether you’re outdoors due to a major disaster or just on a wilderness hike, it’s possible that you’ll run afoul of poisonous plants. If you live in the continental United States, expect to find poison ivy, poison oak, poison sumac, and others in the environment.  350,000 cases of poison ivy alone are recorded in the United States every year.

    POISON IVY AND SIMILAR PLANTS

    Poison Ivy

    The typical “tri-foliate” appearance of poison ivy and another poisonous plant, poison oak, has led to the saying: “Leaves of three, let it be”. Poison ivy’s leaves appear almond-shaped, while poison oak looks like, well, oak leaves. There are various subtypes: Some are vinelike, others short and shrubby, still others appear as ground cover.

    There are, of course, plants that are perfectly harmless that come in “leaves of three”. Other poisonous plants, like poison sumac, have a different look. Poison sumac has 7-13 pointy leaflets and can grow into a small tree upwards of 20 feet in height. Poisonwood is a relative that prefers subtropical areas like the Florida Keys. It is thought that inhaling smoke from burning sumac and poisonwood can cause life-threatening respiratory distress.

    WHAT CAUSES POISON IVY RASH

    The common factor that makes all of the above plants dangerous is the compound “urushiol”. Urushiol is an oily resin that can be found on just about every part of the plant, including vines, leaves, and roots. The chemical irritant sticks to the skin on contact and causes symptoms in 85% of those exposed.

    As poison ivy rash is essentially an allergic reaction, it is not, in and of itself, contagious. However, any clothing or body parts that have urushiol on them can cause symptoms when touched by others.

    As an aside, the presence of urushiol in poison ivy and other plants appears not to be a defense mechanism; instead, it serves to help them retain water. Deer, birds, and other wildlife can eat poison ivy without ill effects.

    DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT

    The rash of poison ivy, oak, and sumac causes itching and a red, bumpy rash within a day or two of exposure. The rash continues to spread for a few days and lasts for up to three weeks (more in some cases). Breaks in the skin from itching can cause secondary infections that can become serious.

    It’s sometimes difficult to make the diagnosis. Most don’t  realize they were exposed during their time outdoors.   Exposure may also occur indirectly, for example, by petting the fur of a pet that has been outside. The rash might appear in winter and confuse health providers, but even plants that are dormant can cause reactions.

    Therefore, a red, bumpy, itchy rash in anyone who has been in the Great Outdoors or near others who have (including pets) should raise your suspicions. Either poison oak, ivy, or sumac exist just about everywhere in North America except perhaps mountain top and desert environments. As such, it should always be on the list of possibilities in wilderness settings.

    Once you have determined that there has been exposed to poison ivy, it’s important to wash the exposed area and clothing with soap and water as quickly as possible. Urushiol isn’t easy to remove, however, so you might consider soaps that are effective against resins or oil, such as Fels-Naptha or Tecnu.

    Common treatments for poison ivy, oak, and sumac rashes include hydrocortisone cream, calamine lotion, capsaicin cream, and antihistamines like diphenhydramine (Benadryl). Some recommend the use of rubbing alcohol on the exposed areas. Cool compresses may are thought to be soothing.

    There are many home remedies that are also thought to be effective to treat poison ivy rash. Here are just a few:

    • Apple cider vinegar (burns at first)
    • Baking soda paste
    • Epsom salt or oatmeal baths.
    • Chamomile tea bag compresses
    • Aloe Vera gel mixed with various essential oils, such as tea tree, lemon, lavender, peppermint, geranium, and chamomile.
    • Jewel weed (mash and apply)

    There are many others. Natural or commercial creams and ointments should be dabbed on as opposed to rubbing, which may cause more irritation and slow healing. In the worst cases, prescription medications like Medrol (Methylprednisolone) may be needed to speed recovery and prevent complications.

    The good news is that, even if you don’t treat the rash, it will go away by itself over 2-3 weeks in most cases.

    PREVENTION

    Long pants and sleeves will help prevent contact with poison plants

    The best prevention is to avoid getting the toxin on your skin. If you can’t avoid exposure, make sure to wear long pants, long-sleeved shirts, work gloves, and boots if you’re doing work in areas known to harbor poison plants.

    Some recommend an over-the-counter lotion called IvyX as a preventative. Apply it like you would a sunblock to likely areas of exposure. Theoretically, it prevents the oil from being absorbed by your skin.

    The effects of poison ivy, oak, or sumac can make you miserable and even cause secondary infections, something that will decrease your work efficiency in the Great Outdoors. If you know how to identify these plants and be aware of your surroundings, you’ll have less headaches off the grid.

    PlayOn Cloud Service: I mentioned this past Saturday I have started using the PlayOn Cloud service as part of my entertainment efforts without cable or satellite. It is working extremely well. It may seem a little weird but I have a digital entertainment library as part of my long term preps. An entire library of movies, TV shows, and music to be viewable on tablets and TV’s.

    The garden is almost done. The 2nd planting for the summer is producing but plants are frail and not looking good. I’m going to pull up the weaker ones and start getting ready for the Fall garden.
