5 Steps to Building a Digital Preparedness Library(2020 Update)

digital preparedness library, prepper, SHTF, survival, preparedness, budget, PDF

I have gone through numerous preparedness digital library systems over the years. My shelves are overflowing with books but with the availability of the Internet and digital ebooks, guides, manuals and various pdf’s, the creation of a truly massive digital preparedness library is very possible. To create a digital survival & preparedness library I’ve used laptops, CD’s, DVD’s, USB flash drives, and external hard drives in an attempt to organize the information. After a lot of trial and error, I’ve come up with my current system. It is user-friendly, portable, inexpensive, and extremely versatile.

    Enter: The Amazon Fire Tablet.

Amazon, Fire, tablet, preparedness, library, ebook, SHTF

In a world where iPad’s and other brand name tablets cost hundreds of dollars – the Amazon Fire 7″ multimedia tablet came in at only $39.99(regular price $49.99).  For $39.99 the Fire provides excellent power, storage capacity – and multimedia capabilities. It represents a significant tool for prepper’s to build and organize a digital preparedness library. Capable of excepting microSD cards an almost endless supply of PDF’s, videos, documents, audio files, and pictures can be stored.

So – how to put it all together?

5 Steps to Building a Digital Preparedness Library

    20170114_171949

Step #1: Buy an Amazon Fire tablet(LINK)

Amazon, Fire tablet, prepper, digital, library, SHTF, information, pdf

Step #2: Install ES File Explorer App

    20170114_172123

Within the Appstore perform a search for “ES File Explorer” and download it.

There are other File Manager apps that can be used to access the contents of the Fire as well as inserted MicroSD cards. I am familiar and use only ES File Explorer.

Step #3: MicroSD Card – Create Folders/Organize Preparedness Information

survival, SHTF, preparedness, digital, lobrary, prepper, microSD

At this point purchased ebooks from Amazon will be automatically downloaded to the Fire tablet. Additional guides, manuals, documents, videos, audio files, etc. need to be added to a MicroSD card via a computer.

I have found the best method for this is to:

    1. Download desired files to laptop/computer.
    2. Insert the MicroSD card into the computer.
    3. Create folders on the MicroSD card which to organize the files. Examples would include Gardening, Firearms, Communication, First Aid, General Survival, Hunting, Fishing, Homesteading, etc.
    4. Transfer files into their corresponding folders.

Where to get all the files? The Survival & Preparedness Download page on this website is a good place to start.

Of note – if you ae interested in books by Paladin Press, they are available for purchase over at PaladinPressBooks.com.

    Step #4: Insert MicroSD Card

Amazon, Fire, digital, preparedness, SHTF, library, information

If the MicroSD card is inserted with the Fire on it may or may not recognize the card. If it does not restart the Fire tablet and it will search and locate the card and the information on it.

The Fire tablet can accept MicroSD cards up to 512gb’s of capacity. This is a truly massive amount of information. If the files to be stored are mostly PDF’s a 32gb card would likely be all that is needed. Video takes up an enormous amount of space thus 128gb or more would be advised. Another option is to have multiple cards which is fine. I prefer one card(with a duplicate backup) with all the information in one place.

Step #5: Open the ES File Explorer and Enjoy!!

preparedness, ES File Explorer, survival, digital, library

Tap on the ES File Explorer App icon and a menu will open. The internal Amazon Fire memory will be represented but what we are interested in is the MicroSD card. Click on the card and another screen will appear. As can be seen in the image above I created a folder titled “PREPAREDNESS” on mine. Whether you did something similar or not you can now access your card and all contents.

Summary: The Kindle Fire Tablet Digital Preparedness Library

What is so awesome about this digital library is I can sit down with this one device and access literally thousands of ebooks, manuals, guides, PDF’s – even movies and songs. I can read a military manual on navigation and then check the best planting time for cucumbers in my growing zone – and then put in some earphones and watch The Equalizer.

All of this for the cost of the Amazon Fire tablet and a MicroSD card. All of the content – including many ebooks – can be found for free or purchased at reasonable prices.

The Amazon Fire tablet can be easily charged from most portable solar systems and almost any portable power bank that will charge a cell phone. There are also numerous durable cases available for damage protection.solar, power, Amazon, Fire, survival, preparedness, library

While there are other tablets that can be used I found the versatility and cost of the Amazon Fire tablet to be best. There are also different sizes of the Fire tablet, however, the 7″ model is the least expensive. I have recently picked up the 10″ model and absolutely love it.

Having such a massive amount of information all on the Amazon Fire multimedia tablet is an invaluable resource.

  • Retreat Medical Station Part 2 of 2

Retreat Medical Station Part 2 of 2

retreat, medical, station, first aid, SHTF

Will you have what you need in a medical situation or emergency if one arises and there is nobody to call for help? No 911, no ambulance, no hospital; just you and the supplies you have. That thought should guide you as you plan for what you will need at a home/retreat in the event of an SHTF situation. Keep in mind that you may have more than just your immediate family to care for. Getting medications in children’s strengths and in chewable or liquid forms should also be considered.

Here’s a list that can get you started:

    Medications:

    • Antacids- Omeprazole (Prilosec OTC) is something that you can take daily to help prevent acid reflux, this medication is not for treatment of current heartburn and may take 1-4 days to start working. For occasional heartburn or indigestion get some chewable antacids such as TUMS.
    • Antibiotics- Fish antibiotics are stocked by some preppers as a replacement for antibiotics that are prescribed by physicians. Not every antibiotic will kill every bacteria. Without knowing the type of bacteria you are fighting you should use a broad-spectrum antibiotic such as Ampicillin or Amoxicillin. These can sometimes be found at farm supply stores such as Tractor Supply and various online sites.
    • Antibiotic cream- Neosporin ointment can be used on a clean wound to help prevent infection from a burn, scratch, cut that could become infected.
    • Antidiarrheals– Pepto-Bismol and Imodium are common upset stomach medications. If your food storage diet does not parallel your normal diet gastronomical issues could become an issue.
    • Anti-fungal cream– This will treat skin infections caused by a fungus. For example, ringworm, diaper rash, athletes foot, and jock itch.
    • Antihistamines- Diphenhydramine aka Benadryl helps with nausea, sleep and most importantly an allergic reaction. Keep Benadryl liquid as well as tablets on hand. If someone is having an allergic reaction liquid will work faster. There are also chewable tabs available for kids (and some adults) who can’t swallow pills. These can also assist those struggling to sleep get the rest they need.
    • Antivirals- Abreva is an over the counter ointment used for herpes simplex virus that causes cold sores on the face and or lips to keep on hand. Antiviral medications that are taken for the flu, shingles, and chickenpox are only available via prescription.
    • Eye Rinse//irrigations
    • Nasal Sprays
    • Pain/fever relievers – Examples of these are Acetaminophen aka Tylenol or Ibuprofen aka Motrin or Advil. Aspirin is also used as pain/fever relievers and is also used as a blood thinner. Aspirin in the form of a chewable 81mg tab is also used at the onset of chest pain because of its anti-clotting properties.
    • Wound cleaner- Anytime you get an abrasion it is imperative that the first thing you do is clean the area. If soap and water are unavailable Bactine spray works great. Hydrogen peroxide and rubbing alcohol are not recommended as they delay healing by damaging healthy tissue, however, they can be effective in killing bacteria from surfaces such as tweezers or hands.

    Supplies:

    • Bandages- Different sizes and shapes
    • Crutches
    • Face masks
    • Gauze- Variety of sizes
    • Ice packs- (Instant cold packs that that will activate with a squeeze will be very useful)
    • Scissors
    • Skin Glue (New Skin)
    • Splints- Different sizes and types (I really like SAM splints)
    • Syringes – Different sizes and types, as well as diabetic syringes, could be beneficial
    • Tapes- Different sizes and types (transpore tape, silk tape, medipore tape
    • Thermometers
    • Tweezers- Different styles and sizes

    Trauma items:

    Special Considerations:

    • EpiPen
    • Glucose Tabs
    • Glucose monitor
    • Insulin- For those who want to stock insulin there is a brand called ReliOn that is sold over the counter at Walmart’s pharmacy. Like all insulin, it needs to be refrigerated. Any diabetic who considers using this needs to speak with their provider to get guidance on what dose is needed.

    walmart, insulin, SHTF, retreat, preparedness

All items listed are good to keep at the retreat, at home, as well as in a bag. Keep your stock updated in regards to expiration dates. The sterility of sterile items could be compromised if you keep them past the expiration date or they are exposed to extreme hot or cold. Giving someone an infection when you were only trying to help could definitely cause unneeded use of resources and time. If the SHTF you would want the freshest things possible to start.

As with any medication, you should seek the advice of a medical expert. Know the side effects of medications, contraindications of use and look for adverse reactions after medication or treatment has been given.

first aid, preparedness, medical, SHTF, retreat

Being prepared for a medical emergency doesn’t just mean collect as many items as possible, it means becoming knowledgeable as well. Find out what your local hospital offers for CPR/First Aid classes and get books to keep as reference guides in the event there is no internet. First aid and basic medical knowledge is a prep that is valuable at any time, no matter the situation or state of our country.

I look forward to seeing comments and additions to this list from the readers!

  • Retreat Medical Station Part 1 of 2

Retreat Medical Station Part 1 of 2

first aid, medical, preparedness, retreat, SHTF

Being without much needed medical supplies when you need them is scary. While working as a nurse outside the hospital setting people often looked to me for medical advice. Not having the convenience of a physician or other trained medical personnel when health issues arose made me plan two or three steps ahead for things that could potentially happen. Making sure that I had the necessary first aid supplies and continually updating those supplies was the one thing that I could control.

retreat, SHTF, survival, first aid, medical

For the purpose of this article, let us assume that your first aid kit will be at a climate-controlled retreat location, although keep in mind moving at a moment’s notice could be possible. If your supplies ever have to be moved or are exposed to extremely high or low temperatures remember that this could affect the efficacy of medications or sterility of some items. Rotating your supply and keeping a spreadsheet with expiration dates is a great way to see what items you may want to replace. Supplies that have expired may also have compromised sterility or efficacy, although I would agree that if the SHTF an expired something is better than nothing.

There are many things to consider when deciding what kind of first aid kit is best for you. I would recommend getting a standard first aid kit and building on that is one of the best ways to get started. Prepackaged first aid kits on Amazon with 4 plus star reviews that will get you started and you can personalize to meet your needs are as follows. – – – > https://amzn.to/2OSu0y7  – Hey, first aid supplies in an ammo can….COOL!!!!

    ammo an, first aid kit

    This one is small, less than $20 and has over a hundred reviews.  – – – – > https://amzn.to/37tyMZb

Both of the above kits can be made better with the addition of a good compression bandage.

Get one big enough for the number of people you think you will be with and then add a few, you can never be too prepared in the area of first aid as you never know when you will be able to get more or who or what situation you may be faced with. Again, keep in mind that supplies expire and the sterility of supplies or the efficacy of some medications could be affected if past the expiration date.

I know that we said this first aid kit was assuming you would be at a retreat location, however, keeping a waterproof bag for transportation of medical supplies handy if such an occasion arises could be a potentially life-saving idea. If you have to leave, leaving first aid supplies behind would not be wise. Also, consider keeping a lunch box or something you can put items that may need to stay cool in just in case. If an ice pack is not available you could use an instant ice pack for transport. They are nice to have for injuries too! This is an instant ice pack that has a 4-star rating and you can choose from a couple of different sizes.  – – – – > https://amzn.to/37tzt4J

This bag is small and can keep things cool if not exposed to extreme outside heat or you can add an ice pack. Again, you need to consider what you will need to carry and how much.  – – – > https://amzn.to/2wfzqgd

This bag claims to keep things cool for 30 hours and even shows the temp. 30 hours!!!! – – – > https://amzn.to/37q4K91

medical, first aid, survival, SHTF, first aid, retreat

These are only suggestions and a way of getting you to think about what you may need and a quick way to get started on your retreat medical station. Watch for an upcoming article about medications to consider and advanced medical supplies. Until then, start making a list, read reviews on products, check expiration dates when you can and ask a lot of questions if you are unsure.

Coronavirus: With the influx of concern regarding coronavirus and related virus’s, the addition of medical face masks and other PPE(personal protective equipment) would be prudent. Disinfectant materials such as Clorox wipes and antiseptics such as rubbing alcohol should be stocked up. There is no shortage of information available on the Internet for preparing for pandemics.

  • Wuhan Coronavirus Update

    Wuhan Coronavirus Update

The streets in Wuhan, China remain almost completely absent of both human and vehicle traffic. Supplies are drying up and over 60 million people remain quarantined. The numbers coming out of China are daunting at best and likely understated. Being a communist country China is well known for manipulating the truth. Evidence suggests the virus is much worse than being publicized.

Currently, there are 14,652 cases worldwide(23 countries) and 305 deaths. Many of the worlds leading infectious disease experts suggest that Wuhan Coronavirus will likely become a pandemic. Time will tell. Reports are this virus is much more contagious than the flu virus, however, the lethality is still to be determined.

With 8 total cases so far in the United States and only one who has not visited China there is a reason for concern, but not worry. At least not yet. The next few weeks will really shed some light on the significance of this virus.

How many cases will develop in the US? Deaths?

Will infected patients be found in your city or town? If so, how did they contract the virus?

Keep prepping my friends. If the Wuhan coronavirus turns into a serious problem in the US taking a few steps now may make all the difference.

  • Coronavirus Outbreak Accelerates

    Coronavirus Outbreak Accelerates

This post on the Coronavirus. is being published on the evening of January 27th, 2020. For the absolute latest information on the outbreak both in China and worldwide visit a variety of news sources such as the BBC, Fox News, and the CDC website.

As of today, there is a growing sense of concern as millions of people in China are being quarantined, thousands are suspected to have contracted the virus, and over 80 have died. There are 5 confirmed cases in the United States. The good news is it appears early in the outbreak China has taken massive and appropriate actions to reduce the chance of spreading.

    What is Coronavirus?

Direct from the CDC website2019 Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) is a virus (more specifically, a coronavirus) identified as the cause of an outbreak of respiratory illness first detected in Wuhan, China. Early on, many of the patients in the outbreak in Wuhan, China reportedly had some link to a large seafood and animal market, suggesting animal-to-person spread. However, a growing number of patients reportedly have not had exposure to animal markets, indicating person-to-person spread is occurring. At this time, it’s unclear how easily or sustainably this virus is spreading between people.

    Why be concerned?

It is too early in the outbreak to accurately determine the longlasting health effects on those inflicted. Early indications are that beyond severe illness, the death rate rest at around 14%. As the situation develops this number could be highly inaccurate. For reference, Ebola has a 90% fatality rate.

Initial Coronavirus cases led disease specialists to believe transmission was limited to animal-to-human. As the virus has spread it has become apparent that human-to-human transmission is now occurring. How contagious is the virus?

    Unknown.

What is especially dangerous about this virus is that symptoms do not begin to show for 7-14 days, however, the carrier remains contagious during this time period.

    survival, SHTF, virus, Coronavirus

    How to prevent infection?

Prevention is a must!! The key to infection control is to eliminate the ability to come in contact with any bodily fluids from an infected person. Respiratory droplets(from sneezing and coughing, etc.) must be avoided.

    From CDC.gov:

    survival, prepare, prepper, coronavirus

    Steps to Preparing

The key to preparing is preventing contact. With this in mind stopping the virus from entering your mouth, nose, and eyes is critical.

    • Wear a mask such as a 3M N95 mask or a respirator of some type.
    • Face shields, safety glasses, and swimming goggles can reduce the chance of contact.
    • gloves and other coverings should be used to prevent contact.
    • Disinfectant solutions such as Clorox and hospital-grade wipes to clean surfaces.
    • Be prepared to disinfect any and all clothing.

There is plenty of detailed information available all over the ‘net specifically on living in a pandemic. Google it.

Click HERE to download a copy of the video above.

The coming weeks will tell the tale as to how severe the Wufan Coronavirus becomes. Let’s hope it’s contained and soon becomes a non-factor.

  • Update: Jake

    Update: Jake

A couple of weeks ago I put out a prayer request for my dog – Jake.  Jake had gotten very sick, not eating and having severe diarrhea. Typical actions for dietary issues for a large dog like Jake would be chicken breast and plain rice. It didn’t work.

A couple of visits the vet found nothing in blood work. Special food was provided but Jake continued to deteriorate. Jake was down 20 pounds from his high of 75 and getting weak. Another visit to the vets and they recommended taking him to a specialist.

The specialist kept him for several days running numerous tests. In the end, they found the problem. He has a disease that will not allow his body to ingest fats. The fats clog up his intestines which stop absorbing nutrients.

$2500, several prescriptions – and special low-fat food and he is recovering.

I really appreciate the prayers and positive response.

    Thanks

  • Virginia Gun Rights Protest Monday, January 20th – A POWDER KEG!!

Virginia Gun Rights Protest Monday, January 20th – A POWDER KEG!!

Virginia Governor Ralph Northam and the Democrat-controlled government has been threatening to pass sweeping gun control bills striking to the heart of the United States Constitution and the 2nd Amendment. In response to these actions, numerous counties have passed laws declaring themselves “sanctuaries” from gun control laws passed by the state government. While the legality of such zones is in question, tens of thousands of 2nd Amendment supports and Freedom-loving Patriots have planned to protest on the Capitol grounds in Richmond, Virginia on Monday. This past Wednesday, Governor Northam declared a state of emergency that bans firearms and other weapons on Capitol grounds in Richmond ahead of the planned protests. On Thursday the Virginia Senate passed three of the proposed gun control bills which limit the number of firearms allowed to be purchased by citizens, universal background checks, a “red flag” law, and more.

Viginia, gun rights, gun control, protest,

This is where the situation sits as of Saturday morning, January 18th. With Governor “Ralphie” Northam taking a hard stand against the protestors disallowing them to carry during the protest a situation now exists for serious conflict between law enforcement and protestors. The latest news has Captial grounds being fenced in providing only two means of entry. Metal detectors and cell phone monitoring equipment has also been put in place.

I sincerely hope that the protest remains peaceful and thousands of gun-friendly protestors show up and march for their and everyone else’s rights. I am gravely concerned that Antifa and other antagonistic groups will create an environment of lawlessness. There is evidence that “crisis actors” have been sought and a “Black Flag” event could be at hand. Worst case: Shots are fired from one side or the other – and this event possibly goes down in history as another “shot heard around the world” with unpredictable and dangerous times to follow.

Folks – what’s happening in Virginia is a perfect example of the assault on the Constitution and Patriots everywhere. If the 2nd Amendment falls – the rest will be close behind.

Stack it deep and stack it high!

  • Food Storage Recipe: SHEEPDOG PIE

    Food Storage Recipe: SHEEPDOG PIE

When thinking about what types of food that can be stored long-term canned goods are the first thing that comes to mind. Canned items can be mixed together to make a meal or just eaten alone. Stocking up on canned soups, stews or other pasta meals like Chef Boyardee makes perfect sense, especially if you are on the move and not in a set location. However, I still think there is something to be said for having something that resembles a home-cooked meal to lift spirits during difficult times. That is why I have tried to take my regular supper meals and make them out of things that I might have long term. Normally I use ground beef browned with onions as my meat in Shepherd’s Pie but I thought for this food storage recipe canned pot roast might make a good substitute.

For the record, this Northern Maine girl had NEVER tasted canned potatoes until I made this meal and I will always prefer my potatoes “uncanned”.  Yes, potatoes are grown in Maine. Maine is not all lobsters and lighthouses. Aroostook County, known as “The County” by Mainers, is located in Northern Maine and is known for its abundance of potato farms. If you ever get a chance to visit you can pick up a bag of locally grown potatoes at a roadside stand between September and October. Just leave money in the box.

Anyway, this recipe turned out to be a very tasty and filling meal that can easily be made with only a few cans of food.

What you will need for Sheepdog Pie:

    8×8 inch pan

    Aluminum Foil

    2 cans of Roast Beef

    1 can of corn

    2 cans of sliced potatoes

Garlic salt and pepper to taste

    Directions

    1. Preheat the grill to 375 degrees F

    2. Mash roast beef chunks and sauce with a fork and spread evenly on bottom of 8×8 pan

    3. Drain can of corn and spread evenly over top of roast beef

    4. Drain cans of potatoes and mash or place slices over the top of the corn. I choose to mash the potatoes with a potato masher but I think laying the slices over the top would also be good and faster. I also added some garlic salt and pepper to taste.

    5. Cover with tin foil and place on top rack of preheated grill for approximately 30 minutes

    6. It’s ready when hot and bubbly.

If available, top with shredded or parmesan cheese. The homemade banana bread made the meal even better.

    Enjoy!!!

  • Trouble In The World – Iran

Trouble In The World – Iran

The United States is involved in too many countries around the world. Regardless of political leanings far too much blood and way too much taxpayer money have been spent getting involved in other countries and their business. The past several decades have seen wars and conflicts that were more about money, oil, and power than the security of the most powerful nation on Earth. I’m not an isolationist. I believe that if you see your neighbor in trouble and you can lend a hand to help that a good way to keep relationships positive and conflict down.

The United States killed a high-level political member of the Iranian government. While the action may have been justified based on current events the entire reasoning of how we arrived at this point is full of corruption and greed.

Check out the video below for a history lesson – and a wakeup call if you were unaware of the facts involved.

What precisely the Iranian’s will do as a response is unknown. Nothing? Possibly terrorist attacks on American’s in the Middle East? Could the rumored “sleeper cells” within the borders of the US become active and carry out some type of deadly attack? Will more military strikes between the two countries occur?

Might as well shake the Magic 8 Ball to get the answer.

Take care of everyone. Be vigilant. Continue to prepare, to plan, and persevere.

  • 2020: A Year Leading to Uncertainty

2020: A Year Leading to Uncertainty

For the past few years, many have looked at 2020 as the pinnacle point in the near future. Why? I suspect it’s not due to it being a leap year.

Back in November of 2016 many on both sides of the political aisle looked at 2020 as a significant year. If Donald J. Trump turned out to horrible for the country we only needed to wait four years to vote him out. It’s obvious that for most of us who value the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and the foundational values which this country was founded believe things have gone much better than expected. No – Trump is not a savior nor would anyone argue he is a good example of morality. The outcome of his first three years speaks for themselves.

For many preparedness-minded folks who were so focused and prepared with an unrelenting fervor due to the certainty that Killary would be victorious – the outcome of the election allowed a giant sigh of relief. I’ve been highly critical of those who allowed this breather to extend beyond 2017.

We approach 2020 and this country is relishing in low unemployment, growing wages, record-breaking markets, and what appears to be a growing sense of unity and patriotism within its populace. Depending on your source of news it can appear things just can’t get any better. Having this perspective would be a terrible mistake. While being positive and hopeful is admirable – being prudent and realistic pays dividends.

I remember reading the adage above in my teenage years and it stuck. While the focus of this narrative thus far encompasses politics and the intense disarray in this country, there are many more reasons to prepare than the threat of civil war.

Talking to others who are immensely concerned with the direction this country is heading has all of them focussed on November of 2020. While only a few have suggested that they expect some sense of unrest immediately following the election(regardless of the outcome) – all believe that civil unrest and regional domestic conflict is just a matter of time.

November of 2020. A Liberal Democrat Socialist wins. The country will head down one possible path.

November of 2020: Donald J. Trump wins. The country will head down another possible path.

Regardless of the outcome, the events to follow are as uncertain as who will win in 2024(if there’s an election).

    Prepare. Be deliberate.

EMP – electromagnetic pulse. Opinions vary as to how extensive damage to our nation’s infrastructure would be should this unfortunate event occur. The overall consensus is somewhere between serious and catastrophic. One area when considering the effects of EMP is communication. Most agree that cell phones, the Internet, and even landlines will be rendered inoperable. While short-distance communication can be covered with protected standard walkie-talkies, CB radio, and ham radio – reliable long-distance communication is very difficult. When I say reliable – I am referring the ability to reach family and loved ones 1,200 miles away days after and be able to share information.

    Imagine this scenario:

You have a daughter several states away at college. You have discussed preparedness with her. You have pre-staged some supplies and even have a close friend nearby that she is to go to should something occur.

On Tuesday while at work the power goes out. Probably just some utility work or a branch fell, right? You pull out your cell phone to use the flashlight and find it inoperable. “Could this be…..err……” You get up and go to the window and look outside and see cars on the busy street down below not moving. People have their hoods up and you see a lot of shrugs and head shaking. “EMP”

Your mind goes straight to Kelly.

Where is she? How will she get to Sheila’s and Jerry’s? Is she ok? How can you contact her?

One solution is satellite communication. While sat phones are available they are very costly and for most people not realistic. Another form of satellite communication is a text-based device. There are numerous models on the market that allow texts to be sent from one device to another from virtually anywhere in the world. While like satellite phones a subscription plan is required it is much less expensive.

In doing research on this topic I could find no absolute proof on how well satellite communication can withstand an EMP. Satellites are well guarded against solar flares. Ground-based operations have emergency power systems that may or may not work after an EMP. Like many things regarding EMP we won’t know for sure until it happens. In my mind – and planning – the best case for me is an additional two weeks of communication after an EMP event.

Two weeks. Think about that. How valuable would two weeks be? Extremely. Even a couple of days which to communicate with someone to plan a rendezvous or to know they are safe.

The two text-based satellite communication devices I’ve identified as the absolute best option are both made by Garmin:

sat comms, satellite, communication, EMP, SHTF, prepper

    Garmin inReach Mini

    Garmin inReach Explorer+

One of the main reasons I have targeted these two is their use of the Iridium Satellite network. The Iridium network offers the highest level of connectivity wherever you are in the world. You can follow either of the links above to check out prices and features for each one.

I hope within the next month or so to provide a hands-on review of one or both of them.

Well, another option could be two tin cans and A LOT of string.

  • Apocalyptic Chicken Alfredo Lasagna

    Apocalyptic Chicken Alfredo Lasagna

When planning meals and items that I would store in a food pantry in a SHTF situation I consider all tastebuds. This recipe made me think of the teenage food palate because just about every teenager I know loves Alfredo. I was a bit skeptical when I came up with this recipe at first because it was so simple, but that is what we are going for after all! This simple and easy to prepare meal gives the prepper another option other than beans and rice and although the no boil noodles are not able to be stored as long as beans and rice it will give you some options in the first year or so while you continue to plan for future meals. I think this Chicken Alfredo Lasagna will provide a tasteful comfort food feel when sitting around the kitchen table together.

Let me know what you think!

    What you will need:

    8×8 inch pan

    16oz jar of Alfredo Sauce

    Oven Ready Lasagna Noodles

    5oz can of White Chicken

    6 Tablespoons Parmesan Cheese

    Garlic Salt to taste

    1. Preheat the grill to 375ºF

    2. Coat the bottom of the pan with a thin layer of Alfredo sauce

    3. Place 2 lasagna noodles over the sauce lined pan

    4. Coat the lasagna noodles with a layer of Alfredo sauce, ½ the can of chicken, 2 tablespoons of parmesan cheese and garlic salt. Place 2 noodles over the top.

    5. Repeat step 4

    6. Coat the top layer with Alfredo sauce and sprinkle with 2 tablespoons of parmesan cheese and sprinkle with garlic salt to taste.

    7. Cover with tin foil

    8. Place on top rack of preheated grill

    9. Cook for approximately 30 minutes. You can tell if it is done when you stick a fork in it and the noodles are soft.

    10. ENJOY!

  • Civil War 2.0: Uncommon Preparations to Consider

Civil War 2.0: Uncommon Preparations to Consider

Civil War 2.0 has started. History will show we are within the early stages of what is being called a low-intensity domestic conflict. This current conflict and what is to come is quite unlike what most of us for the past two decades have considered when it comes to preparedness. Time’s change and so we must also.

Information is becoming more weaponized with each passing moment. The media is as corrupt as most of the politicians and participation in the political system is largely an effort in futility. Regardless of the outcome of the upcoming elections in 2020 things will continue to get worse.

Typically people look at “preps” and their focus is to glamorize about guns, ammunition – sometimes even bugout vehicles and communications. Preparedness should be focussed on true needs and preparation for as many possible scenarios. These scenarios should be based on data, research, and common sense outcomes from probable events. Predicting the future is impossible, however, predicting possible scenarios is well within the boundaries of those willing to dedicate the time to perform the necessary research.

    I digress.

For those who believe Civil War 2.0 is upon us there are numerous preparations that should be checked off a “To Do” list. Here are a few:

Civil War 2.0 Preps to Consider:

Intelligence – Information that can be gathered prior to the time when needed is an essential preparation. Examples of intelligence would include areas of your city, town, or region that have the highest incidences of crime.

    Other types of intelligence:

      • Locations and origins of gang activity
      • Number of law enforcement(city/county/state police, FBI,etc)  in all surrounding areas
      • Antifa organization levels and activity
      • White supremacy organizations and activity
      • Locations and hours of all medical facilities(this includes EMS/ambulance dispatch centers)
      • Frequencies used by police, utilities, and other city/county workers

Unconventional Communicationmesh network devices staged throughout an area will provide reliable, encrypted communication within that specific area

Planning – A huge topic that will only be touched on here. Instructions, checklists, and procedures on paper are for remembering. Your brain is for thinking. The best time to plan on what to do in events that would at least be called stressful is now. Having a plan to reference allows one to use their brain to think, consider, contemplate – and act.

Examples of plans could include relocation, communicating with friends, family, and group members, and housing if relocated.

Remote Suppliescaches of supplies including clothes, food, firearms, communication gear, and money.

Maps/Alternate Routes – Mapquest is an excellent tool for specifying routes to and from multiple locations. GPS software on cellphones typically provides the fastest or shortest routes. In any kind of regional conflict, these routes may not be the best. Mapquest allows routes to be planned in a very customized way.

bug out route, plan, map SHTF, civil war

Maps of all states and areas that could possibly be accessed should be maintained. Routes can be pre-planned and highlighted with a yellow highlighter.

“Clean” Computer/Tablet – For those who are concerned with being traced via online activity a “clean” laptop or tablet would be in order. By clean I am meaning it has been purchased with absolutely no connection to any part of the owner’s life. This means paying cash, and NEVER connecting to the Internet via ANY wi-fi/Internet connection that any other owned device has connected. Additionally, the user should never access or sign in to any account that could be traced back to the user.

Libraries, restaurants, and other businesses that offer free wi-fi should be used.

See also: 5 Steps to Building a Digital Preparedness Library

USB Flash DrivesUSB flash drives allow a huge array of information to be transferred from one person to another avoiding traceable email and other similar communication.

Encrypted Email – The entire point of encrypted email is to be able to send messages so that the content(text, pictures, video, audio) cannot be seen except by the user. ‘Nuff said.

Prepaid Burner Cell Phones – Just as above more secure communications could be very advantageous.  Burner phones that have no ties to the user are much more secure than a contract-based phone.

Cash – Cash is king especially in a grid-down situation. Cash is also untraceable.

Press Passes – Obtaining a Press Pass may assist in moving through or into certain areas that regular “civilians” are being prevented. Templates are available on the internet and at a future date will offer free downloadable templates here.

    – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

The future is all but certain. What’s absolute is with every passing day division in government and the populace continues to grow. The Federal Debt continuous to build to staggering unprecedented amounts. The US Dollar continues to lose value. The Left continues to propose big government programs and plans to take away our God-given rights.

We are at war, albeit a soft one. That will not last forever and whether we are months or years away from a true, high-intensity regional conflict the time to prepare is now.

  • Is it looting – or surviving?

Is it looting – or surviving?

Watching the news a couple of weeks ago and they were reporting on Hurricane Dorian and the massive destruction in the Bahamas. Looting was a major topic discussed and they even had an interview with one of those “looters”. The news reporter asked the woman how she felt taking items that didn’t belong to her and what did she take during her looting. She explained that she did not feel comfortable taking things, but, felt she had no choice. She went on to say that she went to grocery stores and took food, water, and diapers. She said there are a lot of people that have no food, no water, and there are young children with no diapers.

Here’s my question: Is this looting – or surviving?

When I heard the reporter say that he had interviewed one of the admitted looters I expected they had taken TV’s, computers, shoes, etc. After the interview, I thought to myself – “That’s not looting. That’s surviving!”

    Am I wrong?

From my perspective, there was a literal SHTF situation going on and what she did was called surviving.

The Left Stands Against Police and All Gun Owners

The left never ceases to amaze me. Countless genders. No border security.  7 years to act on climate change or the world will end. Abortion AFTER birth is still a woman’s choice.

This endless credit list of insanity coming from the Left is absurd….and is destroying the country. Let’s review a couple recent examples from the Left.

    1. San Fransisco labels NRA a terrorist organization
    2. California passes a law that citizens can stand by and watch law enforcement in danger

While the NRA has some serious problems right now they are and have been a force protecting gun rights for all Americans.  While we may not agree with all of their actions and decisions facts are facts. There is a reason the Left hates the NRA and for that reason alone I will continue to support them. Now a terrorist organization? So pathetic I just have to laugh.

Freedom to make personal choices is…..well….freedom. California going out if it’s way to tell all citizens that it is perfectly fine to stand by while a police officer is beaten to death. Really? Why do they feel the need to do this? Was this really such a big issue that a law had to be passed? No – they are furthering their agenda and driving their base further to the Left.

    Liberalism is a mental disorder.

    Period.

  • Budget Friendly Preparedness Tips – $10 Per Week

Budget Friendly Preparedness Tips – $10 Per Week

It’s been two weeks since my last post as things have been extremely busy. Hey – life happens.

While the economy is strong and unemployment is at record low levels there are many people that continue to struggle. While stats and data can be manipulated to prove almost anything, the fact remains that wages in 2019 reached the same point which they were all the way back in 1973. This is, of course, taking inflation and the Consumer Price Index in consideration. The point is regardless of all the positive economic news millions of Americans struggle to not only live week to week – but the challenge to actually prepare for uncertain times seems impossible.

Seconds make minutes. Minutes make hours. Hours make days. Days make the month. Do a little each week and after a short time progress has occurred.

Here are a few “$10 per week or less” budget-friendly preparedness tips:

    • A few cans of soup, fruit, or vegetables
    • Create a digital preparedness library with inexpensive USB drives
    • Box of 9mm ammunition(can be found under $10 commonly)
    • Large bag of rice
    • Flashlight
    • Extra batteries for flashlights and radio’s
    • Candles
    • Fleece blanket
    • Make copies of all important papers such as insurance,
    • Cases of water and/or several gallon jugs
    • Buy 4 pounds of spaghetti and 2 cans of spaghetti sauce
    • A few jars of peanut butter – store in freezer
    • Grab a 5 pack of Bic lighters
    • Watch Youtube videos on different knots and practice
    • Buy a few military-type can openers
    • Pick up some cotton balls and petroleum jelly at the dollar store
    • 100 rounds of .22LR ammunition
    • Pick up several solar garden lights
    • Purchase a tarp or two at Harbor Freight
    • Duct tape

    The list is endless.

Take a look at what supplies you have in the categories of food, water, defense, shelter, and medical and focus on the weakest areas first. A little bit at a time adds up and can make a big difference in the long run.

OK folks – what would you recommend?

From the Desk of John Rourke – August 14th, 2019

Note: Every so often I’ll throw out some random thoughts on a variety of topics. This comes “From the Desk” of John Rourke.

Last week was a long stressful one at work. Trying to relax this past weekend and will be traveling this upcoming one. I’ve purposely NOT watched the news, however, can’t help but hear all the talk on gun control.

The Left spouting antigun dribble is nothing new especially after some psychopath goes on a killing spree. With Democrat candidates for President calling for gun bans and confiscation this would have been a perfect time for politicians on the Right to promote the Constitution, gun rights, and destroy Liberal arguments with facts and logic. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen. President Trump openly backed Red Flag laws and universal background checks.

    Pathetic.

Even newcomer and Conservative favorite Dan Crenshaw has backed Red Flag laws.

If Trump backs any successful gun control legislation or laws via Executive Action his bid for 2020 will be an effort in futility.

Food. You hear that word and it likely conjures up visions of frustration from those trying to lose weight or images or a favorite meal(steak on the grill with squash and corn on the cob. Food storage is simply not sexy. If it was there would be magazine covers galore filled with images of canned freeze dried food and hard red winter wheat. Yeah – rice would be there too.

So – preppers frequently go out there and stock up on all the guns and ammo they can afford without giving food its due diligence.

If you have two AR’s, tons of magazines and a few thousand rounds of ammo – and a months worth of food:  you’re guilty.

The national debt continues its aggressive path upwards as we approach 23 trillion dollars. The government continues to spend money it doesn’t have. We are past the point of no return and the debt clock will NEVER tick backward.  It is only a matter of time that the massive debt and printing of money creates heightened inflation and devaluing of currency.

Like with several other scenarios looming over us – the time to prepare is NOW.

  • Widespread Reporting on Coming Food Shortage

Widespread Reporting on Coming Food Shortage

Spend a little time on Youtube and you’ll see many video’s warning people of a coming food shortage. Extensive crop loss is blamed on excessive rainfall and corresponding flooding within the United States. Proponents of the food shortage also blame “climate change” and state the next several years will see rising food prices, declining supply levels, and increasing economic impact on populations as a larger percentage of income is spent on groceries.

While many of us are not believers in man-induced climate change there is little doubt that climate changes all the time.  No matter which side of the argument you’re on – a food shortage is a food shortage.

As preparedness-minded folks, stocking up on food is nothing new. As for myself, I’ve felt a tremendous need to stock up on food lately. Not as glamorous or exciting as the latest “tacticool” pistols and accessories there is little more important than food.

    Recommended: Stock Up Now

Store more of what you eat. Common sense, right? With each visit to the grocery store buy a bit more than you normally would with an emphasis on things that have a longer shelf life. Canned foods are the most obvious as they will last years past their marked expiration date.

Bulk foods such as rice, beans, dried corn, and pasta can be mylar packed and stored for years. These are some of the least expensive food storage options to consider.

food storage, bucket, prepper, preparedness, SHTF, food shortage

Freeze dried food is on the expensive side but is lightweight and stores for upwards of 25 years. One of these best deals I’ve found is a 30-day bucket for one person for $99.99 and free shipping. On a budget? Grab one of these each month and in a short time a decent supply will be put back.

Regardless if there is some impending food shortage around the corner stocking up on food just makes sense.

  • 2020 Democrat Candidates and Gun Control

2020 Democrat Candidates and Gun Control

I’ve said it once and I’ll say it a thousand times – politics and preparedness go hand in hand. Our ability to defend ourselves from the perspective of lawfulness is at the mercy of politicians at the local, state, and federal level. Regardless of their apparent misunderstanding of “shall not be infringed”, the assclowns tend to reduce and regulate that which should not be.

While I’m 100% certain there is no political solution for what is coming I nevertheless am active in the political scene and remain aware. As much or as little as my opinion and my vote may have an actual effect on this country I exercise both regardless.  I look at it that ANY benefit that is realized buys time.

Time to prepare. Time to get ready.  Time to stock up.

Kamala Harris is just one of the current 20 liberal/socialist candidates vying to run for President in 2020. Something that all have in common is there desire to inflict irreparable damage to gun owners. Phrases such as “universal background checks”, “confiscation”, and “gun bans” are commonly used as these nitwits offer solutions to a problem that doesn’t exist.

Check out the interview below with Harris. If you haven’t taken your blood pressure medicine first.

Right now ammunition is very cheap. Firearms are very cheap. Magazines are readily available and, yup – super cheap. Anyone seeing that it is just a matter of time before the political winds shift and our gun rights are trampled need to stock it high and stack it deep.

Right now an AR-15 can be built for less than $300. It’s time.

Lowers, and uppers, and magazines….Oh my!!!

A Realistic Look at Civil War 2

You’d have to live in a vacuum not to realize the political and social division in this country has grown tremendously over the past 10-15 years. There is a trending belief that a new, modern civil war is inevitable. Opinions vary on exactly what this conflict will look like. I have my own beliefs and the videos below provide a very similar description that closely matches my vision. I firmly believe that this second civil war has already started.

Take the time to watch and listen. Take the time to rewatch and listen again. While theories based simply what was read in a book or discussed in on an internet forum exist, developing a theory based on accurate intelligence and data is not easy. Sam Culper as featured in these videos has developed such a theory and opinion.

No – there will not be a civil war like back in 1861. The complexities, the locations, and the people involved will vary significantly. No tanks. No missiles. Irregular warfare, hit and run tactics, and political/economic resistance will be more the norm.

Digital Preparedness Library – Updated Download Section

The most significant recent change here at 1776PatriotUSA.com is within the DOWNLOAD section. It has been greatly expanded and reformatted. There is now over 60 gigabytes of information organized within folders and accessible using a newly generated graphic interface. New files are being added almost daily.

Information is valuable and in a grid-down, no internet, no book store existence finding out how to get tomatoes to grow larger and produce more is why a preparedness library is so important. While I advocate for “real” books that can have its pages turned there is no doubt that digital media has its advantages. The ability to store countless thousands of books, manuals, guides, articles, and videos digitally is a huge plus that cannot be overstated.

I highly recommend the use if an Amazon Fire tablet for building and accessing a digital preparedness library. They are high quality and inexpensive. With the addition of microSD cards and an almost limitless supply of references and entertainment can be stored.

Oh – and if you happen to have anything you would be willing to share in The Library let me know. Send me an email at 1776PatriotUSA (at) gmail (dot) com.

  • Programming the Baofeng UV-5R for Common Frequencies

Programming the Baofeng UV-5R for Common Frequencies

The Baofeng UV-5R and similar radios are very useful tools. It’s a compact, handheld radio capable of transmitting with 4 watts of power across 136-174 MHz and 400-480 MHz frequencies. It can be programmed with up to 128 channels. They can receive and transmit a variety of frequencies including those used by weather radios and the often purchased walkie-talkies found at Wal-Mart. Their capability is actually much more and this article will provide instructions on how to manually program the popular Baofeng UV-5R for many common frequencies.

[Disclaimer: You are required to obtain a license to transmit on these devices and punishment for doing so without a liscence can range from fines to having your bottom lip pulled over to the back of your head. You’ve been informed and warned.]

    Baofeng, survival, communications, prepper, preparedness

While the frequency can be entered in the Baofeng UV-5R and similar radio’s by just punching in numbers it is also possible to save it as a channel for easy access at any time(see below).

    Manual Programming the Baofeng UV-5R

    • Step 1. Press [VFO/MR] and enter Frequency Mode.

    • Step 2. Press [A/B] and choose the A-Side (upper display).
The A side must be used to program channels into the radio.

    • Step 3. Press [BAND] for the frequency band.
Toggle [BAND] to choose 136 MHz (VHF) – or 400 Mhz(UHF). Choose the right band based on your desired channel frequency.
If this is not performed correctly the radio will cancel the operation after entering the frequency in Step 5.

    • Step 4. Disable TDR (Dual Watch/Dual Standby).
Press [MENU] 7 [MENU] [press up/down arrow keys] OFF [MENU] [EXIT]

    • Step 5. Enter the frequency.
Using the keypad, enter the frequency into the radio.

    • Step 6. Assign the frequency to a channel.
[MENU] 27 [MENU] [enter channel number XXX] [MENU] [EXIT]

That’s it. Programming frequencies via software is easier and more flexible. That’s for another post at a later date.

Now – go grab your Baofeng UV-5R and give it a shot…….

  • From the Desk of John Rourke

From the Desk of John Rourke

As a teenager growing up in the 80’s I discovered preparedness or as it was known back then survivalism and being a survivalist. I tended to focus on nuclear war survival, civil defense and shelter construction. 14 years old and I was focused on one enemy – the Soviet Union. As I live my life now it seems threats come in all shapes and sizes and from every direction. The culture of the United States has changed, and the division within its populace has grown to a point that external threats may pale in comparison to the internal ones. While I generally have been very critical of people who predict and prepare for one specific thing – there are reasons to contemplate that which you feel is most likely and may require certain preps. More on that in another post.

survival knife, survival, Rambo, 80's, hollow handle, preparedness, survivalist,

I miss the 80’s. I miss going to the Civil Defense office at City Hall and reading up on fallout shelters. I miss the fantasy of grabbing my big hollow-handled survival knife and heading out into the wilderness to survive. Hey – I was 14. I miss thinking that survival was living out some unrealistic scenario from the movie Red Dawn. Yeah – things were much simpler back then.

Today I deal with the harsh reality that a second civil war or new American Revolution would be beyond difficult. That an EMP from some overhead satellite would create conditions so desperate that things like cannibalism would become commonplace. The level of darkness and evil that would arise, well, most cannot comprehend.

    antifa, threat,civil war, domestic conflict

People suck. In a domestic conflict and especially after EMP people would suck even worse. Back in the 80’s many of us envisioned Americans coming together to fight together against a common enemy. Today? Not so much.

In the 80’s when the threat of the Soviet Union generated Patriotism and movies like Red Dawn – it was much simpler.

  • Upcoming Ban on Baofeng Radio’s

    Upcoming Ban on Baofeng Radio’s

Many may not be aware that effective September 20th, 2019 it will be illegal to import or sell the Baofeng UV-5R and similar radio’s. Why? You can head over to ARRL.org and read the specifics.

What this means is the availability of these inexpensive, versatile and varying quality communication devices may decrease and become difficult to find. While it is widely reported that these radios will suddenly be gone and off the market, I have my doubts. Should supplies decline prices will go up. If you were interested in one of these radios – or twelve – the time to purchase is now.

Baofeng, ham radio, UV-5R, ban, FCC

    Why is this important?

As a communication and information gathering tool, these radio’s are high value. They can receive and transmit(with appropriate license) on a variety of frequencies.

Right now prices are less than $30 per radio. It is my recommendation to stock up on a few of these before prices climb and supplies dry up.

Visit this link for the best prices on Baofeng radios.

  • The Return……..

    The Return……..

    1776PatriotUSA.com is back.

The direction, or possibly better stated the purpose of this website is to report and discuss what we believe to be an existential threat to our way of life and even our very existence [More details to follow].  Preparing for what we also believe is the inevitable realization of the “apocalypse” or SHTF will receive an equal effort within these pages and posts. To bottom line it, we are going to discuss what we believe is going to happen and how to prepare for it.

The popularity of preparedness has been on a rollercoaster ride over the past couple of decades. Right now those actively preparing is at a very low level. The economy is booming, unemployment is extremely low, and wages are up. There are many reasons for this including a sense of euphoria after the presidential election in 2016. While not all preparedness minded people are fully satisfied with the election results most felt the country “dodged a bullet”. Regardless – the economic boom since has led to many relaxing their preparedness ways.

    Domestic Conflict

We are a nation divided: by color, monetary stature, by political and religious beliefs. United we are invincible against all enemies foreign or domestic. Those who want to control us (in which there are countless actors) will always try to divide us… gun laws, abortion, conservative, liberal, White, Black, women, men, gay, straight. They will exploit every difference in opinion they can to control the population. They will try to stop your freedom of speech with things like political correctness and so-called “hate speech”. They will attack your rights to defend yourself with efforts to regulate, ban, and eventually confiscate firearms. They support letting in millions of illegal immigrants fundamentally changing the very culture of the greatest country in the world and creating a wave of political change derived from foreign influence.  The mainstream media continues to spread lies and push an agenda which sets to influence the populace. Make no mistake – the mainstream media reports “news” from the position of a special interest group. The truth is twisted, partially presented – or omitted altogether to nurture America’s perspective in an effort to drive a political and social narrative.

    hate speech, civil war,

What will be the end result?

It is the belief of the editors of 1776PatriotUSA that domestic conflict within the borders of these United States is not only inevitable – it has already started. Call it a second civil war, a new American Revolution, or an American Reformation – the division of this country and its people will continue and eventually lead to mass armed conflict.  It would take living in a vacuum to not see that there is a political war against Conservative Patriots. The path is set and unavoidable. This domestic conflict will be highly complex, geographically specific, and disrupt the lives of countless millions and forever change this country.

Preparation for such an event begins NOW.

    Liberal violence, domestic conflict

    EMP

In 2008 the Commission to Asses the Threat to the United States from Electromagnetic Pulse(EMP) Attack provided Congress recommendations which to harden the electric grid and critical infrastructures.  While the information was presented and continues to be readily available, Congress took no action to prepare the nation. What this means is should the United States come under an EMP attack(or significant solar flare) upwards of 90% of the population would die within a year.

    EMP, North Korea

Imagine mass power outages throughout the country:

    • Interruptions to services such as fire, rescue, and medical care.
    • Transportation of everyday supplies such as food and water ceased.
    • Communication all but non-existent.
    • The economic and social destruction of the United States.

Yup – no more Facebook or Instagram. No more food at the grocery stores and no food stamps arriving each month.

    north korea, EMP

Think about it. The population would go absolutely insane and mass panic and violence would be only a matter of days away after such an event.

    Starvation. Sickness. Crime. Oh my……..

    Summary

There are plenty of websites discussing hurricane preparedness, making a 72-hour bag, and how to mylar pack rice. The threats confronted by the editors of 1776PatriotUSA.com go beyond the basics and enter into a world most “preppers” refrain from entering.

Interested? Stick around. It’s going to get interesting.
