  • The ‘Economic Recovery’ Is Dead And Businesses Are Failing At A Staggering Pace

The ‘Economic Recovery’ Is Dead And Businesses Are Failing At A Staggering Pace

Rourke: The following is reprinted from TheEconomicCollapseBlog and written by Michael Snyder.  We all have hope the economy will recover completely. Personally, I hope it recovers enough to give us at least 2-3 years for further preparations. A full recovery? Not likely.

    line

Even though economic conditions were absolutely awful, during the month of June the mainstream media kept insisting that the U.S. economy was “recovering” and the stock market kept surging on every hint of good news.  But now the “economic recovery” narrative is completely dead, because the numbers clearly show that the U.S. economy is rapidly moving in the wrong direction.  On Thursday, the Labor Department announced that another 1.416 million Americans filed new claims for unemployment benefits last week.  Prior to this year, the all-time record for a single week was just 695,000, and so we are talking about a level of unemployment that is absolutely catastrophic.  But what is really alarming many analysts is that the number for last week was quite a bit higher than the number for the week before.  Many states are rolling out new restrictions as the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases continues to surge, and this is having a huge impact on economic activity.  For months I have been warning that fear of COVID-19 would prevent economic activity from returning to normal levels for the foreseeable future, and that is precisely what has happened.

Overall, more than 52 million Americans have filed new claims for unemployment benefits over the past 18 weeks, and that makes this the biggest spike in unemployment in U.S. history by a very wide margin.

In fact, this dwarfs all previous spikes by so much that the others are not even worth mentioning.

Of course, it isn’t just the employment numbers that are depressingly bad.  According to Jefferies, in late June 19 percent of all U.S. small businesses were closed, but now that number has risen to 24.5 percent

As of Sunday, 24.5% of small businesses in the United States were closed, according to Jefferies. That is worse than late June, when only 19% were closed. Jefferies pointed to “particular weakness in COVID hot spots” and noted that small business employment had dropped to levels unseen since the end of May.

Just think about that number for a minute.

Nearly a quarter of all small businesses in the entire country are closed.

And the really bad news is that many of them will never end up reopening.

At the beginning of the pandemic, I received a lot of criticism for stating that many of the small businesses that were shutting down at that time would never open again, but over the long-term the numbers have shown that I was correct.

In fact, Yelp says that a whopping 60 percent of the restaurants that were initially listed as “temporarily closed” on their site are now classified as permanently closed…

It’s tough out there for restaurants and other small businesses.

Yelp’s Economic Average report out Wednesday shows exactly how tough: 60 percent of the 26,160 temporarily closed restaurants on the business review site as of July are now permanently shut. Temporary closures are dropping, and permanent shutdowns are increasing.

Fear of COVID-19 is going to cause a large portion of the population to continue to avoid restaurants for as long as this pandemic persists, and it is becoming clear that it is likely to persist for a long time to come.

We are going to lose so many small and independent places to eat.  Many of the big corporate chains that have very deep pockets will survive, at least for a while, but there is simply no replacing what small and independent restaurants mean to our communities.

Bars and clubs are being hit extremely hard as well.  According to Yelp, 44 percent of the bars and clubs on their site that were initially listed as “temporarily closed” have now been shut down on a permanent basis…

Bars and clubs are also closing forever at high rates: 44 percent (as of July) of 5,454 temporarily shuttered bars and other nightlife establishments are shut for good.

Other sectors of the economy are doing relatively better, but the overall outlook for small businesses in America is exceedingly bleak.

In New York City, it is being projected that one-third of all small businesses will never be able to open again…

As many as 76,000 small businesses in New York City – a third of the 230,000 citywide – may never reopen after forced to close during the COVID-19 lockdown, business leaders have warned.

The Partnership for New York City, a not-for-profit organization that connects business leaders with local government, predicted that 76,000 small businesses will never be able to reopen in a report produced by 14 consulting firms.

I know that number is hard to believe, but this is actually happening.

Our politicians want to encourage people “to go back to work”, but for millions upon millions of Americans the jobs that they once had are gone forever.

Air travel is another industry that is being absolutely devastated by this pandemic.  After a modest bounce in June, the number of air passengers is starting to fall again

The resurgence of coronavirus infections is derailing the travel industry’s modest recovery. The number of air passengers processed through TSA security lines fell during the week ended July 20, compared with the prior week, according to Bank of America. This metric is down more than 70% from a year ago.

United (UAL) CEO Scott Kirby told CNBC on Wednesday that the airline doesn’t “expect to get anywhere close to normal until there’s a vaccine that’s been widely distributed to a large portion of the population.”

All of the numbers that I have shared in this article tell us that we are in an economic depression.

Many had hoped that this economic downturn would be short-lived and that a “V-shaped recovery” would commence once the coronavirus lockdowns were lifted.

But instead a resurgence of cases has caused new restrictions to be implemented, and economic activity is slowing down again.

The bottom line is that all of us need to get prepared to weather a long-term economic storm that is going to be incredibly painful.

The last recession was bad, but it isn’t even worth comparing to the times that we are entering now.  All of our lives are being turned upside down, and a lot of people are not going to be able to handle what comes next.

Every week we provide insight on events as they develop and transpire across America. In these unprecedented times, it’s difficult to grasp the complexity of everything that’s going on. We are not a news agency and make no claims to be experts on the topics discussed. COVID-19

The spreading of COVID-19 continues with the number of cases and deaths worldwide increasing daily.

Here are the numbers as of July 23rd, 2020:

    Global Confirmed Cases: 15,284,136

    Global Deaths: 624,665

    Global Recoveries: 8,709,300

    US Confirmed Cases: 3,987,584

    US Deaths: 143,446

    US Recoveries: 1,210,849

    US Active Cases: 2,633,289

    • A public health employee predicted Florida’s coronavirus catastrophe — then she was fired: ‘This is everything I was trying to warn people about’
    • A new coronavirus mutation has become the most dominant strain of the virus — and is causing outbreaks to spread more quickly across the world, an expert said.
    • A report out of Florida shows many people who have never been tested for COVID-19 are receiving phone calls claiming they’ve tested positive.
    • 60 percent of the 26,160 temporarily closed restaurants as of July are now permanently shut. Temporary closures are dropping, and permanent shutdowns are increasing.
    • Mayor of Washington, DC Muriel Bowser (D) issued an executive order Wednesday requiring residents to wear masks outside of the home as the city battles rising coronavirus cases. Fines up to $1,000 are permitted should anyone outside of their home not wear a mask.

Commentary: Those of us who have said – “There’s got to be more to this than what we are seeing” just several weeks ago can now see it….if you look. Hospitals across the nation are filling. This is not fake. It is real. While COVID-19 maybe not much more than the flu for most – it is deadly for many.

One of the biggest things we can do right now from a preparedness perspective is to take care of ourselves. Exercise, lose weight, stop smoking, and improve immune systems. There are many thousands of people across America right now laying in a hospital bed who thought it wasn’t that big of a deal.

Those that never make it out of that hospital will tell you that it is. Don’t let social media develop your opinion on things.

    PROTESTING/RIOTING/CIVIL UNREST

Protests appear to be diminishing, however, in some areas they remain violent and destructive.

    • The city of Portland, OR continues to see violence and rioting almost nightly. Wednesday evening Federal law enforcement agents fired tear gas into a growing crowd outside the Justice Center to disperse the crowd. Mayor Ted Wheeler was in the crowd and later thanked everyone for coming out against the Trump occupation of the city.
    • Seattle leaders state they do not want Federal law enforcement personnel in the city regardless of the violence that erupted on Sunday. Storefronts were smashed, court buildings and police stations were attacked as well.
    • Downtown Raleigh, NC is struggling to recover from riots in the wake of George Floyd protests in late May. And some businesses that haven’t yet reopened may not come back at all. Many of these businesses are owned by African-Americans.
    • Police in Pittsburgh, PA shared pictures of 5 people who are believed to have instigated a riot in late May. They are seen via video and camera footage throwing items at police.
    • Louisville, KY: Both the First and Second Amendments could be on full display in Louisville this weekend if and when an armed Black militia group comes to town. The group, known as the NFAC or the Not F***ing Around Coalition, says it won’t be demonstrating or marching, but lining up a formation of armed Black militia members. The group’s founder, Grandmaster Jay, has recorded several social media videos promoting the event. Of note is that there will be other militia’s with differing beliefs than the NFAC also present. This is a powderkeg just waiting to blow.

CommentaryWhile overall protesting and violent civil unrest have decreased things are not back to normal. BLM continues to ramp its rhetoric as well as Antifa. Most major businesses are doing the “politically correct” thing and creating policies in support of BLM. Some businesses are even giving preferential support to minority-owned businesses in an effort to remain off the “targeted” list of BLM and the Left.

I suspect that moving forward it will not take much to spark a sudden increase in protesting, and following that civil unrest. What will happen when federally funded unemployment compensation runs out? The new normal has those easily triggered taking to the streets and defying all sense of morality.

    ECONOMY

The Coronavirus pandemic continues to be directed affecting the economy. Businesses across the nation have closed….and many are still closing. Businesses of all sizes are included as manufacturing plants down to small mom & pop shops feel the effect. With the rise of cases, limits on the number of people allowed in the business, and mandated masks increase ultimately businesses suffer.

    • Bullion has gained 22% this year and is within about $70 of an all-time high. And with five-year Treasuries now yielding -1.15% once the effects of inflation are stripped out, a seven-year low, there’s little reason to expect a slowdown in precious-metal buying as investors fret about the weakness of the economic recovery, prospects for further outbreaks of Covid-19 and the impact of central bank bond buying.
    • ‘Now’s not the time to turn off the faucet when, you know, we should be using our strong balance sheet to borrow to stimulate the economy’ – California Democratic Rep. Scott Peters. The National Debt is approaching 27 trillion dollars.
    • AT&T Inc., for the first time, disclosed how many customers stopped paying their phone bill because of economic hardships related to the virus-induced recession. The company said 338,000 regular mobile-phone subscribers stopped paying in the second quarter; an additional 159,000 broadband customers and 91,000 TV subscribers stopped paying as well.
    • The stock market continues to hover unrealistically high and counter to economic indicators. This is a positive thing for 401k’s.
    • Real estate picked up in June as many sellers and buyers re-entered the market. Low supply, higher demand, and low-interest rates have helped bolster a market that was depressed over the past few months. Of particular interest are land parcels located out in the country away from cities.

CommentaryThe economy continues to be held up by Federal spending, bubble gum, and duct tape. The economy and commerce in this country have been changed and the evolution continues. So many industries have disappeared completely. Others have been damaged severely. Businesses have changed the way they conduct their activities due to COVID as well as political correctness.

My hope is that Congress will NOT provide incentives for people to remain out of work. Ingenuity will create solutions where problems lie and many businesses will regain their ability to succeed. Should the Trump administration continue for another 4 years, it is likely that further trade deals and deregulation will have a positive impact on the economy, thus helping a recovery.

    POLITICS

Much of the divide that is present in the nation is directly correlated to the divisive political environment currently in existence. Beyond healthy debate or even normal agenda-driven bias, the level of aggressive and purposely damaging action taken by Progressive politicians and groups is at an all-time high.

    • In an interview with CNN on Tuesday, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi said the nation is suffering from the “Trump virus,” or the results of President Trump’s handling of the coronavirus.
    • Voters in the crucial battleground states of Michigan, Pennsylvania and North Carolina will begin casting ballots in September, giving President Donald Trump and Joe Biden just weeks to make their cases to voters.
    • Negotiations continue in Washington DC over the next coronavirus relief package, Republicans and Democrats have shifted their focus to the next round of direct stimulus payments.

Commentary:   As usual, Democrats and Republicans remain on opposite ends of the opinion spectrum to best serve this country. Regarding the COVID relief package, Democrats want to provide incentives for people to remain out of work, while Republicans want the opposite. The blatant opposing perspectives for both the Right and the Left could not be more evident and obvious. Longtime Democrat-run cities have fared poorly during the economic crisis compared to the Conservative to Moderate-run cities. Over and over again throughout the world and through history it has been shown that individual freedoms and efforts trump socialism every time.

The unpredictability of these times is maddening. It’s like trying to find Waldo while on a roller coaster doing multiple loops at 90mph. It’s an effort in futility. I suspect this will continue for months and it will be months before we realize the true effect all of this will have on our daily lives – and our future.

  • NO GUNS? Here’s a Few Ideas to Arm Yourself NOW

NO GUNS? Here’s a Few Ideas to Arm Yourself NOW

These are unprecedented times we find ourselves in and with civil unrest in many areas of the country and so much uncertainty much of the firearms and ammunition supply has dried up. While we can point fingers to all those that failed to stock up and prepare accordingly, that not very productive. So this article is dealing with the current situation NOW – not 6 months or 6 years ago. There are many who are just now looking to purchase a firearm. Available choices are slim.

For those wishing to purchase a firearm for the first time here are a few ideas in no particular order:

    .22LR Semi-Auto Rifle

When it comes to self-defense the #1 rule is to be armed. Next – being able to hit your target while engaging the threat is a must. The topic of the .22LR being used for self-defense has been discussed numerous times. It’s not the best self-defense round. Everyone knows it. ‘Nuff said.

Ruger, 22LR, 10/22, survival rifle, project, build,

    Why?

Ruger 10/22’s are still available online for purchase and at some Wal-Marts and other sporting goods stores. They are inexpensive and immensely reliable. While .22LR ammunition has become more difficult to find, it is available and inexpensive compared to all other calibers. Magazines with capacities ranging from 10 to 25 rounds are readily available and can function very reliably.

    Shotgun

Shotguns of various configurations are available from most gun dealers, online, and at Wal-Mart and other stores that carry firearms. The most versatile firearm made, the shotgun is an extremely capable firearm for medium to short distance self-defense. Shotgun ammunition is still readily available.

    Lever Action/Bolt Action Hunting Rifle

Take a gander at your local gun shop long gun area and it will still be filled with lever action and bolt action rifles. These are most often looked at as hunting firearms. Lever actions have an advantage over bolt actions in reloading speed. This is the case for most people. Bolt actions generally have an accuracy advantage due to their longer barrels and better triggers.

Numerous calibers in lever actions are available and include .30-30 Winchester as the most common. This ammunition can be found on shelves right now. Bolt actions can be found in a variety of calibers including .243, .270, and .308 which all can be found readily available in most gun shops.

None of these are perfect for self-defense. Some have advantages where others do not. No pistol is represented. This is on purpose as most ammunition in pistol calibers have skyrocketed in price and are difficult to find.

So – comment below. What would you recommend?

    Take care all!

    Rourke’s SHTF Go To Gun[2020]

    “So, what’s your SHTF gun?”

This might be a question you hear from a fellow prepper sorta like – “What do you do for work?” at a neighborhood cookout.  Like choosing a car, firearms are highly personal and there is no perfect gun or guns for everyone.  I’ve owned many firearms in my 50 years and can tell you that my “SHTF gun” changes from time to time.

Right now my current “kit” is based on an AR-variant and the S&W M&P9 2.0 9mm pistol.

Let’s start with my AR. This is not an off-the-shelf AR. I built it. I used a Mid State Firearms 10.5 upper and melonite BCG. It has performed flawlessly and although the barrel is only 10.5″ it has been extremely accurate. Hitting tannerite at 85 yards shot after shot is good enough for me. The Mid State upper is mounted atop a New Frontier Armory billet lower.  A Shockwave AR pistol stabilizer and Hypertouch EDT trigger group round out the list of the major parts.  I’ve run a Bushnell TRS-25 red dot up top for several years and it does what I need it to. Notice that little piece of duct tape? Extra CR2032 battery for the TRS-25 sits underneath.

The end result of this build is a lightweight, rugged, accurate, and reliable weapon. Did I mention it is compact? 29.5″ long and moving the stock(ok….the brace) would decrease that further.

    Here are a few pictures:

preparedness, prepper, AR-15, SHTF, go to gun,

preparedness, prepper, AR-15, SHTF, go to gun,

I’ve been asked many times what the best SHTF gun is. Nowadays my answer is – “The one you have with you when you need one.”

As mentioned my gun of choice can and will change from time to time. After my upcoming test on the Springfield SAINT Edge pistol, that time may arrive sooner rather than later.

    COVID-19

The spreading of COVID-19 continues with the number of cases and deaths worldwide increasing daily.

Here are the numbers as of July 16th, 2020:

    Global Confirmed Cases: 13,578,608

    Global Deaths: 584,782

    Global Recoveries: 7,596,551

    US Confirmed Cases: 3,499,771

    US Deaths: 137,420

    US Recoveries: 1,367,648

    US Active Cases: 1,994,703

    • A 37-year-old Iraqi war veteran in Ohio dies of COVID after posting on social media that he doesn’t believe the hype. On July 1st he began to have symptoms. Three days later he was dead.
    • Love Connection host Chuck Woolery Tweeted the following….“The most outrageous lies are the ones about Covid 19,” Woolery wrote. “Everyone is lying. The CDC, Media, Democrats, our Doctors, not all but most ,that we are told to trust. I think it’s all about the election and keeping the economy from coming back, which is about the election.”
    • Cities across the country in areas showing an increase in positive COVID cases are suggesting a new wave of shutdowns. An Example: Houston leaders are calling for another lockdown as the number of active cases of the coronavirus in the county increased to more than 27,600 on Sunday. Houston’s Harris County — the most populous county in Texas — has been the hardest-hit in the Lone Star State.
    • California Gov. Gavin Newsom ordered Monday all counties in the state to close indoor operations for a handful of businesses, including restaurants, bars, movie theaters and museums, as Covid-19 cases continue to climb.
    • Schools across the nation are developing strategies to be able to open and handle children while reducing the spread of the virus. In Los Angles, the superintendent for the Los Angeles Unified School District announced Monday that students will not return to the classroom when the fall semester begins next month because of the surge in coronavirus cases across the area.
    • Cities across the country are passing city ordinances requiring all citizens to wear masks when out in public. The repercussions of not doing so carry penalties from absolutely nothing – up to fines and jail time.
    • Georgia Governor bans all cities from mandating masks to be worn.

Commentary: The “new normal” continues to evolve. Policies on social distancing, wearing masks, and limits on the number of people allowed in a particular space are criteria that are just getting started and will likely be strengthened and required for years to come. The new normal will fundamentally change this country and society itself. The significant impact on the economy and the repercussions of that impact are highly underestimated.

    PROTESTING/RIOTING/CIVIL UNREST

Protests continue to occur across the nation. Many demand racial justice, the defunding of police, or societal change towards socialism. The removal or destruction of symbols from history continues to be relevant.

    • 87 protestors were arrested as they conducted a “sit in” at the home – and on the property of – Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron on Tuesday. They were demanding justice for Breonna Taylor – who was killed as part of a No-Knock warrant by police. They were at the wrong home.
    • In North Portland, a crowd of over 200 protested against police brutality. Items were thrown at police as well as a construction worker who was boarding up the police station in that area.  A recent shooting where a black man was killed as by police seemed to be an ignitor.
    • There has been a massive spike in gun and ammunition purchases across the country as riots and protests have people on edge and have contributed to a growing level of uncertainty. A large percentage of buyers are new to the world of firearms.
    • A Supreme Cout police vehicle was set on fire by an individual who poured a flammable liquid on the car and then ignored it. The suspect has been arrested.

Commentary: Civil unrest, rioting, and protesting seem to be on the decrease. While this is good news there are still pockets of violence erupting in various places. One thing that appears to be true is that the “new normal” has that almost any controversial event will cause riots and civil unrest to occur.  There is little more American than protesting, however, the recent examples have certainly led to more significant and detrimental activities.

    • Texas is the latest state to consider reversing its re-opening and begin shutting down “non-essential businesses.”
    • Schools in Los Angeles, San Diego, and Atlanta will begin entirely online, officials said Monday. Schools in Nashville plan to do the same, at least through Labor Day. The economic impact of schools not reopening with normal attendance across much of the country is significant.  Daycare facilities and retail sales for school clothes and supplies will suffer greatly.
    • Businesses across the country cannot get people to come back to work as they can often make more money being in unemployment than working.

    Commentary:

The COVID bailouts of businesses and payments made to Americans via stimulus checks and unemployment stipends show the inept ability of the government to do anything right. Over 3 trillion dollars spent and added to the National Debt and the vast majority of it went to big corporations and businesses who scammed the system. Companies with 10 employees reported saving 500 jobs as one example.

The government is now too big NOT to fail.

    POLITICS

Much of the divide that is present in the nation is directly correlated to the divisive political environment currently in existence. Beyond healthy debate or even normal agenda-driven bias, the level of aggressive and purposely damaging action taken by Progressive politicians and groups is at an all-time high.

    • Joe Biden is running ads in Texas. The significance of this cannot be overstated.  Normally valuable campaign funds would only be used in a state in which the candidate believes they have a chance to win. The largely Conservative Texas has largely been signed by Democrat Presidential candidates.
    • The Trump campaign is running ads in Georgia. Similar to the above story – Trump would not normally spend campaign funds this early on a state which he is sure to win. Georgia has largely been considered a shoo-in for Trump – until now.
    • Shutdowns: At this point, the division is obvious.  President Trump and other top Republicans are adamant against lockdowns, but Democratic politicians in many areas of the country are suggesting their need or implementing them.

    Commentary:

Politicians are elected to serve their constituents. The reality is on both sides far too often their election leads to their serving a powerful base of special interests, donors, and large corporations. We continue to see people on the opinion spectrum well away from each other on opposing sides. Way on the Left you have Progressive Socialists who have one belief and perspective. Way on the Right you have Conservative Patriots who have quite a different perspective. What we know for a fact is one side aligns with what the Founders of this country believed and established. One side aligns with the Constitution. The other side does not.

    You be the judge.

The unpredictability of these times is maddening. It’s like trying to find Waldo while on a roller coaster doing multiple loops at 90mph. It’s an effort in futility. I suspect this will continue for months and it will be months before we realize the true effect all of this will have on our daily lives – and our future.

  • [2020]The Argument FOR Uncommon Calibers

    [2020]The Argument FOR Uncommon Calibers

It’s often recommended that a weapons stockpile should consist of firearms in common calibers for one very important reason: Resupply. Due to the sheer volume of rounds with calibers such as 9mm, 45ACP, .223, .308, and .22LR if things get bad these calibers will always be readily available.

    Well, maybe not.

Remember the months and months that followed Sandy Hook? It was extremely difficult to find ANY common calibers unless one was willing to pay some extremely inflated prices. I would visit my local gun shop, Academy, Wal-Mart, and DICK’s and there was no 9mm, no .223/5.56, no .22LR. Those were the calibers at the time I was searching for. There was also no 45ACP, no .308, and no .380.  I also could not find any .30 Carbine. I did see 10mm sitting on the shelves. There sitting lonely covered with dust were other calibers such as .270, .300 Winchester Magnum, and even .30-06 occasionally. Back then even the .22 Magnum was readily available for quite some time.

Over the last few months since the pandemic ramped up ammo firearm and ammo sales have gone through the roof. A very similar situation has occurred although ammunition is in better supply and prices are more favorable than after Sandy Hook. Look around enough and ammunition can be had just a bit higher than pre-pandemic.

I totally understand the theory that the chances of coming across common ammunition such as 9mm and .223 anywhere in the United States are much greater than finding .41 Magnum. I agree. With that in mind, there are some advantages to the less-popular calibers.

I remember after Sandy Hook two things:

    1.  I wish I had stocked up on more ammunition when I had the chance.
    2.  I wish I had owned a couple of guns such a .22 Magnum and 10mm.

Lessons learned. Next time – and there will be a next time – be stocked up on what you need BEFORE a shortage happens.

Jericho TV Series – Watch the First Episode

For those that have hung out here with the “1776 Nation”(that’s you!) for a while or over at my previous site where I would spew my musings, you know I am a big fan of the TV show Jericho. For those not familiar, Jericho was a series that came out back in 2006 and was watched by preparedness-mind folks weekly. There were Jericho watch parties and often discussions after each episode.

    Show Summary via Wikipedia:

The storyline centers on the residents of Jericho, a small northwest Kansas town, in the aftermath of a nuclear attack on 23 major cities in the contiguous United States. The series begins with a visible nuclear detonation of unknown origin in Denver, Colorado. Despite initial belief that it was an accident, Dale Turner, one of the characters, receives a phone call from his mother in Atlanta, Georgia. The call is then cut out by the sound of a nuclear blast. Upon showing this to others, it is revealed that the bombings were deliberate. Problems are compounded by loss of power and modern communications, effectively isolating Jericho. Later, power is restored to Jericho by what is alluded to as the efforts of the U.S. government but an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) from an unknown source disables all electronics.

Above is episode #1. Take a watch or download it while it’s still available. If you have Netflix the series can be watched there – or the DVD can be purchased HERE.

    Good stuff!

STATUS REPORT: America in Midst of Turmoil

Every week we provide insight on events as they develop and transpire across America. In these unprecedented times, it’s difficult to grasp the complexity of everything that’s going on. We are not a news agency and make no claims to be experts on the topics discussed. What is absolutely certain is we are investing time to research information with a quest for truth using facts, logic, and some common sense thrown in.

    COVID-19

The spreading of COVID-19 continues with the number of cases worldwide increasing daily.

Here are the numbers as of July 9th, 2020:

    Global Confirmed Cases: 12,169,400

    Global Deaths: 552,043

    Global Recoveries: 6,696,392

    US Deaths: 133,106

    US Recoveries: 969,111

    US Active Cases: 2,003,098

    • The number of new cases is spiking as states nationwide continue to relax quarantine restrictions and open. The number of tests are also increasing as testing becomes more readily available. While a correlation of increased testing may be a reason for increased positives, the increased number of hospitalizations shows the significance of the continued spread.
    • Many politicians and medical experts are suggesting to stop the opening of States, or even reverse and begin closing again. Anthony Fauci has suggested States experiencing a significant uptick in cases should seriously consider shutting down.
    • Colorado town threatens a 1-year jail sentence for not wearing masks.
    • Research suggests that antibodies may only last a matter of months.

Commentary: We’ve all seen what has happened up to this point. There is no indication that this is going away. With Fall right around the corner – this 2nd wave, whatever you want to call it – is only going to get worse. Be ready folks.

    PROTESTING/RIOTING/CIVIL UNREST

Protests continue to occur across the nation. Many demand racial justice, the defunding of police, or societal change towards socialism. The removal or destruction of symbols from history continues to be relevant.

Commentary: Civil unrest has spread across the country mainly in larger cities. Violence in the form of vandalism, assaults, and murder is occurring. Anti-police rhetoric continues and has proven successful in some areas as cities reduce funding. Some in law enforcement have quit their jobs in protest – or called in sick which has now been termed the “Blue Flu”.

A radical Black militia of at least 200 people made a stand in Stone Mountain, Georgia stopping white people and demanded reparations. The rise of radical groups such as this and the continued Antifa presence in most major cities is reason for concern. The rising tensions, and additional “sides” being created – is a powder keg ready to explode.

    ECONOMY

The Coronavirus pandemic and it’s effect on the economy continue to be disastrous. While the Fed has relentlessly pumped money into the market to keep stocks from plummeting, millions of Americans have lost their jobs and countless businesses have closed their doors. While many businesses have begun to reopen, they are largely doing so with part-time help, part-time hours, and part-time capacity of establishments.

Commentary: Millions out of work, tens of thousands of businesses closed, civil unrest in cities across America – and a virus that hangs around like Cousin Eddy in Christmas Vacation. The economy is in serious trouble and with the threat of a second wave of closures – the likelihood of an economic collapse grows.

These are times like no other. There are many signs of things to come and for many, the question is not what is going to happen but when.

Tabletop Review: Springfield Saint Edge 5.56 Pistol

I recently had the opportunity to get a close look at a Springfield Saint Edge AR pistol. This 5.56mm “pistol” is the top of the line, high-end AR offered by Springfield Armory. The Edge series of forearms offer billet lowers and premium components. Springfields goal is to provide the highest end forearms with the utmost reliability and accuracy. After handling the Saint Edge I have to say from the looks of it they reached their goal.

Below is a photo slideshow of the gun as I take a look at it. A full review is coming up as I take I to the range and send some Freedom Seeds downrange. Of note – Ammo.com was gracious enough to donate some ammunition for the upcoming review. Thank you Ammo.com!!

  • SURVIVAL HACK: Obtaining Propane for Off Grid Cooking On The CHEAP!!

SURVIVAL HACK: Obtaining Propane for Off Grid Cooking On The CHEAP!!

Most people have some type of gas grill that operates on normal, everyday 20 lb. prone tanks. When the power goes out the gas grill suddenly becomes very important. Spare tanks are a great thing to have on hand, in quantity. Problem is to buy a new tank, and have it filled – you’re spending upwards of $50.

Here’s a way to stock up on propane tanks and spend a little less:

Used propane tanks can be found at yard sales, Craigslist, and on Facebook Marketplace. Prices as low as $5 each are not uncommon. Grab a few used propane tanks and then tank them to your local Walmart or propane service location and get them exchanged/filled.

It’s important to know that propane tanks have to be recertified every 12 years. This means if you go buy a used tank and it is older than 12 years there is a good chance when you go take it to get filled they’ll reject the tank. If that occurs just take the tank to a grocery store – or Walmart – and exchange it for a newer tank. It is still cheaper than buying a brand new tank and getting it filled.

I’ve brought up exchanging old out-of-date tanks before and been attacked by “Karen’s” who call this being dishonest and stealing. Let me go ahead throw this out there: An old tank received by the propane exchange company will simply be recertified, painted or wrapped, and then used. No big deal.

If you are curious – here’s how to read the manufacture date of the tank:

    1. Locate the raised collar at the top of the propane tank.
    2. Find the “MFG DATE.” located along the collar.
    3. The first two numbers represent the manufacturing month, while the second to numbers is the year.

So there you have. I’ve bought numerous tanks off Facebook Marketplace used and have built a very good supply.

    Happy grill’n!!!

  • Decline of America and an American Exit Strategy – Part #2

Decline of America and an American Exit Strategy – Part #2

See Part #1 here – – > Current Events and the Decline of America Part #1

In Part #1 of this series, I did my best to provide some perspective on the current state of America and compare it to the great idea she once was. All great empires and societies throughout history come to an end….eventually. Can it be saved? Yes. It is possible. The actions required to accomplish such a feat is not going to occur with our current political climate and social self-destructive ideology. There would have to be some great reckoning to generate change that will not only unite this country but unite with the ideals which it was founded.

So, we have identified that America has run its course and although we can have hope we need to face the reality that the world as we know it changing – and not for the better. The American Empire will transform – is transforming before our very eyes. The big question for all the prizes is what do we do now?

    Here’s the answer:

You must enact your American Exit Strategy.

What is an American Exit Strategy? Simply put it’s a plan of action in which the desired outcome is to minimize the potential negative effects of a changing society, government, and culture. One of the many goals would be to become as independent and self-reliant as possible. Reducing dependency on such things as grocery stores, government programs, and policies, and service industries is desired.

If you are familiar with Mark Goodwin’s book American Exit Strategy, that is absolutely where the term comes from. In the book, the economy and civilization are collapsing. It is suggested by the Conservative, Independent Presidential candidate in the story that people must prepare by stockpiling food and other supplies and relocate out of the cities where civil unrest is sure to occur. He refers to the preparation for what is coming as an American Exit Strategy.

From a preparedness perspective, the correct course of action is to minimize exposure to risks and threats. With all that has happened, is happening, and the uncertainty around the corner getting away from potential civil unrest must be made a priority. Getting out of the cities – away from the cities – and into the country is essential. If permanent relocation is not possible and in many cases it’s not, then creating a “bug out plan” to relocate must be the main component of the American Exit Strategy.

    Relocation: Population Density

The most dangerous threat when it all comes crashing down comes from people. Take a look around at what is happening in the area of Seattle known as “CHAZ”. When lawlessness spreads and civil unrest become more the norm being as far away from population centers will be immensely beneficial. Population density is generally measured in the number of people per square mile. When planning an American Exit Strategy, relocation – or at a minimum having a bug out location that has a very low population density is a priority.

Small towns and small communities generally have smaller problems. They also react at a much lower level to events transpiring around the world – or up the highway in a larger metropolitan area. Having a neighbor some distance away measured in hundreds of yards or miles is much better than in feet.

    Example:

Mars Hill is located in the very northeastern part of Maine. It’s a very small town hours away from what anyone would consider a large city. The population density is approx. 42 people per square mile. Mars Hill has a crime rate score of A-, which is significantly better than, say, Atlanta which ranks an F. While crime rate scores are subjective and based on many data points they are a useful guide when comparing areas.

    Mars Hill, Maine

Mars Hill has a population of between 800-1000 people depending on the source. With a population density of 42 per square mile, it would not be difficult to find land “out on the sticks” with few neighbors.  Raw land can be purchased as low as $400 per acre in quantity and away from more populated central areas. Population density plummets in these more remote locations.

    The negatives for Mars Hill:

    • Low employment opportunities.
    • Severe winter weather with snowfall annually measured in feet.
    • Short growing season.
    • Dangerously frigid temperatures during the winter.

There are more specifics to consider when looking at a location for bugging out or completely relocating to. This example just covers a few basics.

[Most people will go out of their way to avoid an area like this, -21° F]

    Shelter/Housing

Once a decision is made for relocation, typically the next question to answer is in regards to housing. Do you get a piece of land with a house, build a house, camper, RV, Yurt, shed, tent? The options are endless. Available funds will likely be the deciding factor.  For those with a large source of funding – a house, cabin, bunker, or fortress or whatever will be selected and it’s an easy decision(get what you want). For the purpose of this article, I’ll focus on those like most of us(on a budget).

    A few thoughts:

    • Campers/RV – for those on a budget, campers and RV’s are hands down the best value in protection from the elements. Campers come as self-contained homes with all the typical essentials and comforts at a fraction of the cost of an actual house. Obviously, things such as lighting, heat, air conditioning, etc. require electricity. Off-grid power can be set up with solar fairly inexpensively and campers are readily compatible. Generators are frequently used as well in combination with solar to provide power as needed.

When looking for a camper or RV it pays to have patience and perform widespread searches. There are some fantastic deals that can be found by anyone IF you take the time to look and don’t jump on the first one you see. The specifics about the different models, designs, options, etc. is not something to be covered in this article. One thing I will say is you DO NOT have to have a vehicle capable of moving a camper. There are many moving services available across the nation that will move a camper hundreds of miles, put in its place – at very low costs. This is one of the main reasons it pays to search large areas on Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, etc.

    • Sheds – Go search the internet for information on living in a shed and you’ll find a hodgepodge of information from customization and suggestions on how to do it, to how dangerous it is and you are evil for suggesting such a thing.  Let me cut to the chase: A shed is NOT a house and as a structure is not built the same as a house. Regardless – it is a viable option to consider when setting up a “camp” or “retreat” for surviving some seriously bad times. In fact, it’s a viable option for having a weekend getaway as well, but, that’s for another article. There are considerations that must be made when setting up a shed to live in. Those specifics go beyond the scope of this article, however, I will say that things such as ventilation, leveling, moisture control, insulation, utilities, sealing, sewer, water – just to name a few.

Minimally sized sheds capable of being lived in can be purchased for as low as $3,000. The costs go well beyond the initial cost as those modifications and additions already mentioned must be done.  Building it yourself will save quite a bit of money.

    • Shipping Container – Shipping container homes are often discussed as a means for inexpensive, yet, durably constructed shelters. There are good reasons. Containers are used for shipping “stuff” across oceans aboard large ships. They are durable and built for stacking. They are NOT built for burying.

There are two basic sizes – 20′ foot and 40′ foot containers at 8 feet wide. This is 160 and 360 square feet respectively. With the correct skills, containers can have windows and doors cut in them. It is NOT safe to inhabit a container as they are built.

Much like a shed, shipping containers are hollow shells and will need to be furnished and finished with sewer, light, power, etc. Large flatbed trucks must access the area in which the container is being placed so this may negate some areas.

shipping container, prepper, American Exit Strategy, prepper, preparedness, civil war

Shipping containers can be purchased as low as $1,500-$3,000 each and can be stacked or placed side-by-side. Some very unique and interesting housing units can be built with containers.

    • Tent – Probably the least expensive shelter option is the tent. In the picture below a large what I would call “base camp” tent is shown. Tents can be purchased in a variety of materials such as canvas that are extremely durable. Large base camp tents often have openings for tent stove chimneys.

bugging out, SHTF, prepper, retreat, bug out, civil war, survival

The con’s on tents are obvious with very little protection from the elements leading the way.

    Supplies

A complete discussion on supplies needed within an American Exit Strategy plan would go well beyond the scope of this article. What I will say is the old adage – “Beans, Bullets, and Band-Aids” is a good start. Common sense dictates that essential supplies need to be available in quantity. Large quantities.

    Examples of Supply Catagories:

      • Food
      • Water
      • Firearms, Ammunition, Magazines, etc.
      • Medical Supplies – prescriptions, first aid, Flu medicines, etc.
      • Sanitation
      • Communication
      • Cooking
      • Tools
      • …..and more

How much to stock up on is a discussion that will have brothers stabbing each other with butter knives. The answer breaks down simply as much as possible. Common suggestions provide a minimum of one year of everything. What happens when one year goes by and everything is used up? Plan accordingly.

Storage of supplies is another issue. Built your American Exit Strategy plan around a shed? You’ll need another shed just for your supplies.

An entire series of articles could be developed just of the various supplies needed to live an independent and self-reliant life.

    SUMMARY:

In Part #1 we reviewed what has happened to this country and the case was made that it’s truly just a matter of time before it all comes crashing down. The events we are witnessing now would fit right into the stories of such books as 299 Days, Patriots, and Doomsday: Apocalypse. Unfortunately, we are in the real world and presently are experiencing the early stages of a domestic conflict.  The next few years will be very interesting as over time things will likely evolve to be more volatile and dangerous.

The hope – and my gut is telling me – is there will be a pause in the escalation. This temporary delay is what I and many others are counting on to work towards the completion of our American Exit Strategy. Whether permanent relocation is the plan or bugging out to a pre-determined location – the time is now to get ready.

Last thing: There are those that will suggest implementing such a plan is giving up. They may suggest it’s an act of cowardice. I think quite the opposite. It’s being responsible and dealing with these changing times in an appropriate manner. I am no less a Patriot today than 10 years ago. I love these United States and for all it stands.

Current Events and the Decline of America – Part #1

Mayhem. Violence. Looting. Destruction. Threats. Murders. Curfews. Civil Unrest.

Cities across the United States are burning. Literally.

The wrongful death of George Floyd under the knee of a police officer has lit a powder keg that has exploded. Cities across the nation are dealing with pandemonium as protesting turns into violent, destructive riots.

Cities with major protests/riots include Atlanta, Austin, Boston, Charlotte, Columbia, Denver, Detroit, Dallas, Fort Lauderdale, Grand Rapids, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, Minneapolis, New York City, Oakland, Phoenix, Portland, Oregon, Raleigh, Richmond, San Antonio, Salt Lake City, San Francisco, San Jose, Seattle, St. Louis, and Washington, D.C. Across all these cities protestors are causing mass destruction as vehicles are hit with numerous items such as bricks, bottles, clubs, and flames. Stores are being broken into, robbed, and in many cases set on fire.

Death and injury did not stop with George Floyd’s unfortunate murder. Numerous people have been killed and injured while engaged in rioting – or simply being in the wrong place at the wrong time. It’s unfortunate, and somehow disturbingly ironic, that the majority of victims are a result of black-on-black violence.

The latest outcry from protestors and those who support them is to defund police. In Minneapolis, a “veto-proof majority of the City Council committed to dismantling its police department“. This same City Council and many others across the nation including elected politicians are stating that police do not keep communities safe. As ridiculous as that may seem historical figures who have traditionally been highly respected are now being vilified as statues and monuments erected in their honor are destroyed under the umbrella of “righting past wrongs”.

    Insanity.

So – in the middle of 2020 the growing division in this country has reached a level that many suggest is the most divisive in US history – including the Civil War. Beyond the violence and tension across America, other potentially catastrophic issues such as $26 trillion in National Debt, a growing Cold War with China, millions unemployed, and…oh, let’s not forget….the second wave of a pandemic waits just around the corner.

    Fantastic.

America – A Bit of History

In the early 1900s, the American people had a feeling of optimism. People had a perspective that anything was possible and the American dream was real. Being self-made, and responsible for your own success was commonplace in people’s thinking. Certainly, everyone did not agree on all issues of the time. Regardless, Patriotism grew in the early 1900s as people felt the American Spirit and all things were possible.

Through two world wars, the American people supported the idea of freedom and fighting evil wherever it showed itself around the world. America served as a beacon of peace and freedom. Citizens from Socialist countries around the world sought the American Dream. They dreamed of freedom and all the opportunities America provides. They loved America and proudly waved the American flag.

The Greatest Generation existed in an era of success, innovation – as well as turmoil as they lived through the Great Depression. They had a tremendous work ethic and due to living through years of economic struggles appreciated what they had. Many of this generation lost loved ones and friends in World War II. They understood, appreciated, and respected sacrifice.

People like those of the Greatest Generation are what made America great. Now – compare them to those today who fret over social justice, climate change, and other “important” issues such as making certain that we use the correct pronoun when referring to someone. Today’s generation has their perspective on issues guided by thins such as feelings – and emotion. Facts and logic no longer are important to those who have a cause which they use to justify their own existence.

    The Decline of America

For more than 60 years America has been in decline and an effort has been underway to change the very fabric of this country. Political corruption and governmental policies have brought populations from rural America and concentrated them into cities. Illegal immigration to a large extent has continued to be allowed to occur and has vastly increased the numbers in the base of the Democratic Party. Why? Power. Even the great Conservative Ronald Reagan was fooled into supporting full amnesty for illegals back in the ’80s. Progressives for decades have written into law policies that have enslaved Black Americans and held them back economically as entitlements disincentivized them to explore their full potential. This was done under the guise of “helping” – and most were completely fooled.

The American people are not innocent in America’s decline. For more than 60 years the Constitution has been slowly shredded and government assumed power over much of our lives where the Constitution provides no authority. Those in government who made laws that expanded authority and grew government well beyond that which the Founders set forth were elected by the people. We are largely to blame.

Corporations and special interests have grown to own the vast majority of elected politicians. The Deep State is a significant power as it secretly influences government decisions and actions to obtain more and more power for those who already have it. Numerous policy changes over the last several decades have weakened the United States. Consider how as a country our level of self-sufficiency in regards to food production, technology, and medical supplies has been decreased to the point we rely on foreign countries for our continued way of life.

    Is There Hope?

Earlier in this article, I provide a mere glimpse of the tremendous accomplishments past generations have made in addition to adversity overcome. Historically I and many others have believed there is no challenge that we as a people cannot overcome. Consider September 12th, 2001. The day after and for many months UNITED WE STAND was the battle cry of the American people who came together in unity against terrorism and fear.

    It didn’t last.

Back in 1984, the American people backed Ronald Reagan for President and he won decisively. America’s Cold War against the Soviet Union was at the forefront of threats and the American people were largely unified behind the efforts to rid Communism from the world. The 80’s with Reagan as President was a time of great hope, prosperity – and Patriotism.

Below shows a state-by-state map of the 1984 Presidential Election Results.

    1984 Electoral College, map, Reagan

Fast forward to 2016 and the election of Donald Trump. One of the most divisive elections in US history. The results shocked the world. Businessman Donald J. Trump won the election against Hillary Clinton even though ALL polling data and the mainstream media had him losing handily. While Trump won the Electoral College and thus the election – he lost the popular vote. Looking at the map below showing how counties across America voted, it would appear the country was largely united behind Donald Trump – I would agree. The popular vote was lost due to the large cities and metropolitan areas where for decades governmental policies moved large populations into concentrated areas.  In many cases, an individual city may have more votes than the entire rest of the state.

    Is there hope?

Yes – but very little. The vast majority of politicians regardless of which side of the aisle they come from are corrupt. This has been proven over and over again for decades as good men(and women) are voted into office and they fail to follow through with the promises they made. While many will say that politics and preparedness have nothing to do with each other I believe facts tell quite a different story. When compiling a threat assessment as part of any preparedness system, one will find that the government at some point had a role to play in many of the listed threats.

So – here we are. We are in the middle of 2020 and living through endless headlines having us wonder what could possibly happen next. While I’m no prophet and predicting the future is certainly an effort in futility, I’ll provide a few thoughts:

    • Antifa and BLM will continue to promote violence and civil unrest in cities across the nation. Every new questionable police interaction will fuel the mob which will no doubt create more victims.  While similar events have occurred before and settled down quickly, this time will be different.
    • Politicians at all levels will take advantage of the discourse to further gain power, votes, and their agenda. Liberal leaders and celebrities will side with BLM and state while violence is not the solution they understand the frustrations and anger.
    • Cities with Liberal leaders will continue to allow destruction and anarchy pulling back law enforcement from holding those accountable for the destruction of public and private property and the violence many carry out.
    • Violence will continue in the cities with little threat to rural America. While there have been statements made to head out of the cities into neighborhoods by BLM and Antifa, it is unlikely this will be carried out in any significant numbers.
    • Trump supporters and “Patriots” who often quote the Constitution and enjoy their guns and Bibles will be called racists, White Nationalists, Fascists, and a threat to America by the mainstream media.
    • COVID-19 is not over and a 2nd Wave – regardless of the true risk and severity – will be major news out of the mainstream media, and Democrat Party. The Trump Administration will be blamed for ALL negativity reported.
    • The stock market will continue its roller coaster ride of high’s and low’s as the countries economic indicators are horrible at best.
    • The economy will keep moving forward for the time being. Some businesses affected by COVID will begin recovering and hiring people back. Other businesses will never reopen and will be gone for good.
    • Food supply streams will be inconsistent as a down growing season in 2019, and COVID-19 economic ramifications have a negative impact on the 2020 farmers’ ability to be profitable.
    • Gun sales will continue at a high pace with many first-time gun owners entering the market.
    • The Presidential Election of 2020: November of 2016 will look like an elementary school field trip in comparison. ‘Nuff said.

Is there hope? As stated – very little. The National Debt will continue to accelerate higher ever-increasing at faster and faster rates. I do not see a path which this is reversible. The division in this country may be irreparable. Possibly some event, some epiphany will bring people together to be unified. I see this as highly unlikely. Possibly the MSM will begin to report the news and investigate in an honorable fashion – with the TRUTH as the main objective. Highly unlikely. Is it possible that Christianity will see a mass resurgence and ethics, morals, and virtues will become mainstream once again. Don’t see it but we can certainly pray.

What can we really do? We can have as much influence as possible. We can spread the word of Freedom. We can educate others on the true history of this country rather than revisionist history being taught in schools today. We can vote for the best candidates from local elections all the way up to national with the HOPE that in some small way a difference will be made.

There are other actions we can take. Other actions we must take.

That will have to wait for Part 2.

  • Video: EMP Testing (Garbage Cans and EMP Bags)

Video: EMP Testing (Garbage Cans and EMP Bags)

[UPDATED FOR 2020] The threat of a solar flare or EMP has never been higher than today. History shows we are well overdue for a solar flare and with tensions flaring with China, North Korea, and Iran being more prepared for an EMP just makes sense.

Dr. Arthur Bradley walks through the testing of metal garbage cans and anti-static bags against an RF energy from an EMP. Recommendations include how to properly seal the cans and which bags offer the best protection. Using a more scientific approach than “stick a radio in the trash can and see if it loses signal”, this is some great information.

I would recommend watching the video at some point over on YouTube and read through the comments. Dr. Bradley responds to many comments and answers questions. Good additional information there.

If not aware – this is the very same Dr. Arthur Bradley who has authored numerous books including the widely popular The Survivalist series – one of my absolute favorites.

First off, I hope everyone is staying safe and well. These are incredible times we are experiencing and the future is incredibly uncertain. It is very easy to get swept up in all the negativity while watching the news, feel fear – and wallow in all causing severe anxiety. While facing problems and issues head-on is always a good idea, stop and take a look around. There are lots of beautiful and wonderful things in this world to enjoy while at the same time paying attention and preparing for the future.

    ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊

Is anyone stepping up their preps based on…well, everything that has been happening in 2020? I can’t fathom this not being a HUGE wakeup call for those on the fence about preparedness and for those of us that are preparedness like-minded, stepping it up should be occurring.

    ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊

There are a lot of reasons to not like Facebook. The reality is there is not another social media platform that has the same reach. Well, there will NEVER be another platform – especially one that celebrates freedom of speech – if we do not make the move and open an account when one comes around.
MeWe is such a platform. It is a high quality, non-censoring, and privacy-loving platform. They don’t sell your information nor do they track or allow other companies to track everything you do like Facebook does.
    Follow me over there:
    Come on – do it!!

Consider if the grid went down tomorrow morning at 9:00am. How much do you know? How much do you wish you had done? Information is incredibly important. I’ve written at length about digital preparedness libraries and for myself – I’m stepping up my game. I recently picked up a 4TB hard drive and I’m backing up my backups. I’m searching for more books and magazines and guides to download. I’ve started downloading YouTube videos that could be useful later. Grid down doesn’t mean digital free. Solar is cheaper than ever and with modern technology accessing this information is simple and easy.

REVIEW: Surviveware Small First Aid Kit

    Who is Surviveware?

To understand why I am so impressed with this company it’s important to briefly summarize just who Surviveware.com is. A bit of their background:

Janco and Amanda, the founders of Surviveware, met while traveling the globe. Janco was a deckhand on a superyacht while Amanda was teaching English in France. They met in the little town of Toulon when Janco’s boat was in port. It was love at first sight and the rest is history. But their journey was not without its ups and downs. Building any relationship can be tough, even more so when you find yourself on opposite sides of the world.

    Surviveware's Founders

After thousands of miles traveled back and forth to visit each other in different countries they decided to settle in Amanda’s home state of Virginia to start their own company. They learned a lot from their adventures, especially that it pays to be prepared. There are very few people more accident-prone than Janco, so if he can’t help himself when another mishap strikes, Amanda is there with the right equipment to save the day.

Surviveware is where backpacking and camping meet preparedness! An accident happens in seconds when you least expect it. That’s why it is important to be informed, trained, and ready, long before disaster strikes. Surviveware products have been featured in the national media and our products are trusted by mountain climbers, sports coaches, travelers, EMTs, paramedics, and military personnel.

    Surviveware Small First Aid Kit

Not to make you wait until the end of this article to find out my thoughts I’ll go ahead and tell you I am immensely impressed with this first aid kit. I’ll get into the details below, however, the overall design, organization, contents, and price is exceptional.

Full Disclosure: After I purchased the Surviveware Small First Aid Kit I inquired about becoming an affiliate with the company. Any purchases made by readers – that’s YOU by the way – after following a link from here to their website will buy me a cup of coffee(OK, maybe just the cup). In no way, shape, or form does this influence my opinion or endorsement of any product or service. You’ve got my word on that. Affiliate sales help keep this site operational. ’nuff said.

Surviveware, first aid kit, small, preparedness, prepper, survival, SHTF

Above: Upon opening the box the kit was shipped in I found an EXTREMELY well packaged first aid kit. The kit arrived in a thick plastic protective bag as pictured above. This bag appears to be heavy plastic or clear vinyl and has a ziploc enclosure(see below) at the top.

This protective bag is perfect for protecting the kit from rain and other harsh environmental conditions. This is included with the kit and certainly not needed, however, it just showcases the steps Surviveware goes to as they provide exceptional products and value.

Above: The backside of the protective storage bag displays a list of contents. They are as follows:

    6” Shears(1), 600D Polyester Bag(1), Alcohol Wipes(3), Antiseptic Wipes(4), Adhesive Bandages: Butterfly Closures(5), Butterfly(5), H-Shape(5), Large(2), Standard(20), Mini(5), Square Shape(5), Cotton Gauze Swabs(3), Cotton Swabs(10), CPR Pouch with Instructions(1), CPR Breathing Mask(1), Crepe Bandage(1), Emergency Blanket(1), Eye Pads(2), Hypoallergenic Tape(1), Nitrile Gloves(1), Personal Medicine Laminate Bag(1), Personal Medicine Mini Bags(5), PBT Conforming Bandage(1), Safety Pins(4), Splinter Probes(2), Strip Wound Closures(3), Sting Relief Wipes(3), First Aid Guide(1), Triangular Bandage(1),Tweezer(1), Whistle(1)

    THE BAG

Below: Removed from the storage bag, I’m immediately impressed with the nicest bag I’ve ever seen for a first aid kit containing all the supplies. The bag is 600D polyester. If you are familiar with this material you will know it is frequently used in high-quality backpacks and tactical bags. In a word: RUGGED.

Above: Velcro Molle attachments allow the Surviveware Small First Aid Kit to be attached to a variety of objects including bikes, packs, vehicles, your belt – pretty much anywhere. Perfect for securing the pack on backpacking and hiking trips, or in a Jeep like in mine below:

Jeep, first aid kit, off road, survival, SHTF, Surviveware, prepper, preparedness

Below: Zippers are rugged and smooth. Compared to many small bags I’ve had these zippers are extremely durable and reliable. Very nice feature.

    INSIDE

Above:  Unzipping and opening the bag what I found had me smiling: EXTREME ORGANIZATION.

Everything is labeled in full-color text. There is no question where anything is or what is where – simply look and there it is. Fantastic! This is so beneficial it cannot be overstated. Imagine falling on your mountain bike and a buddy grabs the Surviveware Small First Aid Kit. They will be able to find what they are looking for with little difficulty. With most every other kit I’ve had of this size, opening the bag or box has everything pretty much in a jumbled mess and things can fall out all over the ground. Not with this kit.

Below:  I’ve got to point out the CPR Kit within the kit. Included are nitrile gloves and an antiseptic towel, which is nice. What is impressive are the CPR instructions sewn into the small case which provides the full correct instructions on performing CPR. Think about it – if CPR is needed the ability to remember the steps from training a year or more ago may prove difficult. Having these instructions laying on the ground near the patient could very well be a lifesaver. What a great feature!

Above: The metal shears included is another example of what sets this kit above others. First – they are included. Many smaller first aid kits do not include shears at all, however, they are very useful for removing clothing and cutting seat belts. They are a welcome and valuable addition.

Below: Located within the outside pocket is what you see below. A small plastic bag containing several smaller bags for personal medicines. Great to store some extra prescription meds, or whatever you may wish to keep on hand. This pocket also has plenty of room to put extra bandaids, packs of antibiotic ointments – whatever.

    SUMMARY

The Surviveware Small First AId Kit is by far my favorite first aid kit. It is sitting in my Jeep right now as I type this and I plan to order a couple more. Ultra high quality, durable, versatile, and compact. I struggle to find any criticisms or improvements that could be made. Again – I own several other packs of this size and it is by far the best. Having a tourniquet attached to the outside of the bag would be a recommendation.

At a price of $36.95 – an incredible value. I highly recommend purchasing a couple to be placed in your home, as well as each vehicle.

  • Rourke’s Favorite AR Magazines

    Rourke’s Favorite AR Magazines

It seems every time I turn around there is a new manufacturer of AR-type weapons as well as magazines. Magazines are incredibly important and can render the nicest weapon almost useless if it won’t feed correctly. A $750 paperweight is not really needed….is it? Maybe it’s just me.

    Here are my favorite magazines:facebook-to-add-unlike-button

    1. Lancer L5 Advanced Warfighter 30-round MagazinesSurprised? I love the Lancer. They are extremely reliable and the metal feed lips are reassuring. When pulling from a chest rig or a belt they are easy to grab. The translucent ones provide feedback as to how many rounds are left. Click HERE for more information.

    lancer_systems_l5_advanced_warfighter_magazine_l5_awm_3

    2. Magpul PMAG 30-round Magazine – Generation 2 or 3 I don’t care. These things work and have proven super reliable and the absolute best bang for the buck. By far I have more PMAG’s than any other mag. This is primarily due to their price. Click HERE for more information.

    100_29131

    3. Brownells USGI Aluminum 30-round Magazine – excellent quality control and superb reliability. Advantage of these aluminum magazines is they will fit just fine where some polymer magazines are a tight fit. Click HERE for more information.

    brownells-ar

    4. D&H Aluminum 30-rd. Magazines – These magazines are traditionally less expensive than others and work great. I have over 10 of them and have no issues. D&H magazines are aluminum and have proven to be reliable – at least for me.

    5. Hexmag 30-round Magazine –  Newer on the market the Hexmag is an excellent magazine. I have experienced a couple of issues with these being snug in certain lowers. For the most part these are right on par with PMAG’s. Click HERE for more information.

    hexmag-2

There you have it. Only 5? Yes – those are the ones that made the cut.

Now I know what your thinking – Which ones didn’t make the cut? I’ll mention a couple.

    original-file-2000-1713-pixels-file-size-163-kb-mime-type-7gldpd-clipart

The SureFire 60-round aluminum magazine is terrible. I have performed limited testing and while function was ALMOST perfect – loading it was horrible. I hated the thing. ProMag polymer 30-rounders look very similar to PMAG’s and functioned fantastic. The problem is out of 3 AR’s I tested them in they would not cleanly exit the magazine well. Seems that the magazine catch was catching on a logo or something on the side of the magazine. I filed the edges down to fix it. Still – that is ridiculous.

    Keep your powder dry!

COVID-19 Data Study: Ammunition Sales Continue to Soar in Response to Coronavirus Panic

Rourke: The following is an excerpt from Ammo.com. The folks over there not only offer a great selection of ammunition at great prices but also have numerous articles on all things related to Civil Liberties and Freedom. Check out their Resistance Library HERE.

This article leaves little doubt that whenever ANY threat to our way of life occurs, people stock up on guns and ammo.

Updated May 24, 2020: According to the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA), consumer spending drove about 70% of the U.S. GDP in 2019. Where this money goes is another story. As Visual Capitalist’s Iman Ghosh notes, in the first and second quarters of 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic has initiated a transformation of where consumers spend their money in lieu of widespread shelter-at-home orders.

Here at Ammo.com, our growth in sales has directly correlated with the public’s increasing leeriness of COVID-19.  Starting on February 23, sales began to increase as the search term “coronavirus” gained traction, according to Google Trends. This increase in sales over the past 90 days has continued as follows:

    • 592% increase in revenue
    • 502% increase in transactions
    • 235% increase in site traffic
    • 80% increase in conversion rate
    • 14% increase in average order value

Note: These figures compare 90 days of sales, February 23 to May 23, to the previous 90 day time period, November 24, 2019 to February 22, 2020. November 24 was the Sunday before Thanksgiving and Black Friday.

  • A Change in Attitude

    A Change in Attitude

Rourke: I published the following letter a few years ago and upon revisiting it felt it was very valid today. Enjoy!

We have lived in Alaska for coming on 8 years now and since coming here we have learned a lot about being prepared. We are survivors from hurricane Katrina and evacuated all the way up here to be with family that we hadn’t seen in years. After arriving we quickly learned that an Alaskan lifestyle is a different one. Let me explain. Things here in our fine state move slowly, the mail, stocks of ammo, and fruit comes in green to ripen at the grocery store. We were used to hot weather most of the year and having a garden almost year-round to experimenting with different tactics to grow anything here. So, prepping here is a tad different for us than our brothers and sisters in the lower 48. We have done a great job on building up a food pantry to not only stay off inflation but in case things get interrupted with the shipping, we have ample to survive awhile. Now, with that said, we face a dilemma most don’t and that is if and when the transportation to our state is interrupted at any point, things here will get dicey.

We have taken a page out of a lot of old-timers books that have lived here for years and paid attention to prices, sales and things like that to capitalize on building our inventory. Also, coming from a state that had hurricane prep as part of our schooling, we had those kinds of things taken care of, but here with the climate as it is, we were not prepared for the long winters. Sometimes it seems as winter flows right into summer and before you know it, its winter again? A different lifestyle for sure. Anyhow, we have learned that we must keep supplies in our vehicles and ensure we have things to stay warm should we break down somewhere. We also have taken an increased interest in firearms and other weapons that don’t require ammo. This is key, as the prices here are well… crazy. So, we have a backup of a backup just in case.

So, what change in attitude am I writing about? Not ours, but that of our friends and work associates. It’s amazing to talk with the same people now that a year or two ago thought we were out of our minds prepping. We now get phone calls on how to set up a pantry, or firearms to have. We are helping families here understand that prepping just makes good sense and will help you thru even in the toughest of times. Even my commie liberal friends are getting on the wagon. I find this very interesting.

I agree with the masses that I hope that nothing happens to our great country, but just paying attention and reading the news outlets of various places, you get the feeling that something is coming.

In closing, I want to plead with our fellow peppers to reach out to your neighbors and friends and do your best to get them to understand that our way of life is not fanatical but just makes good sense. You will find that now with things as they are, people are more apt to at least listen to you rather than just dismiss you altogether.

May God bless our country and your family.

    Steve Dearinger

  • Politicians Lied About the Lockdowns

    Politicians Lied About the Lockdowns

Over the last few months, we’ve been told the peak was coming – we just need to make it through the peak. Then, “flatten the curve” was the line repeated over and over again when asking about reopening States. Now many politicians are saying reopening cannot occur until every citizen has been tested and/or a cure is found.

This is for a virus that has an effective lethality rate MUCH lower than originally forecasted. While a segment of the population remains at risk for COVID-19, EVERYONE is at risk of suffering the consequences of economic collapse. It seems commonsense that those at risk from a health perspective should be quarantined – not everyone in the country.

The video below sums my own feelings very well.
