What did you do to prep this past week?

If you have been reading this weekly series you may have noticed a trend – guns & ammo.

I have made some strides over the past few months especially in food storage. My latest order from Emergency Essentials should be arriving this week. Still need to put back some more rice, beans, salt, sugar, etc. Freeze dried food is my main priority now for food stockpiling.

Here’s what I have done prepping this past week:

  • I sold off 4,000 rounds of CCI Mini-Mag .22LR and funded the purchase of a used Ruger SR9 9mm pistol. A few days later I traded it plus $200 for an AR-15. The AR only had a total of 30 rounds shot through it. I know the history and build as a friend of mine built it. I’ll post a picture soon.

……and yes, another gun.

  • Local Cabela’s is having a huge 2nd Amendment sale. Went in to check things out and found an unadvertised special – Century Arms RAS47.

I love the AK-47 and its variants. Drawback is this is another caliber and magazine type I need to stock. That’s fine. I have been needing to increase my long gun count so this helps(in addition to the AR already mentioned).

  • 280 rounds of Tula 122 grain 7.62 x 39mm rounds for the aforementioned RAS47. Paid $4.96 for each box of 20, Best price I have seen in years.
  •  Added 2 jars of peanut butter to the freezer. Totals up to 10 I believe.
  • Went to the local Dollar Tree and bought men’s deodorant, 2 women’s, and 5 tubes of triple antibiotic.
  • Happy Valentines Day everyone.

Your turn!

Over the last two weeks we’ve packaged up more rice, red, black and pinto beans, field corn, chicken/beef bullion and gravy mix. Bought medical supplies – TQs, various gauze, OTC medicines, spare eyeglasses from Zeni optical, found a couple of insulated vests, heavy wool sweaters and work shirts at Goodwill, reloaded 500rds of 223 64gr soft points and 200rds of 9mm JHP at a friends and LEFT a preparedness group we had belonged to for the last year and a half.

jh – Appreciate the comments. Sounds like you have had some good success. I keep forgetting to pick up gravy and bullion at the store. Thanks for the reminder.

This week bought 3 cases of TP at Sam’s, wife’s biggest fear!!! Laid in 24 cans of soups and stews. Received my freeze dried order, super pails of freeze dried fruit, vegetables and fortified milk. Got 720 servings of freeze dried coffee and 10 gallons of water. And at a garage sale I found a leatherman wave, a gerber lmf II, 13 quart jars, 10 pint jars and some lids and rings in both sizes! Not a bad week!

Not much really to cold for me. Under a winter storm warning tonite and Monday Uck. Did buy a on Walmart web site 14 MRE meal plus heaters for 39.99 not a bad price but now they are out of stock. Keep your powder dry and watch Obumo and Demacraps shove another liberal on the Supreme Court down our throats. Gun stealing 101 here they come

Finished my VA medical appointments this week so I am free to move on to other projects! My boy was home from college this weekend, so the family made the lengthy ride to the Outdoor Show in Harrisburg, PA. A SPORTSMANS PARADISE, FOR SURE! Although there were no guns for sale there, many major firearms manufacturers set up displays with their current collections. I think I handled more weapons yesterday than at any point since retiring from the Army 5 years ago. My son and I renewed NRA membership at a discounted rate and the US Concealed Carry Association gave me an Otis cleaning kit for extending my contract with them. This mini-kit will be great for a Get Home Bag! I looked at them online. They run between 35 and 40 bucks! With respect to “prepping” activity, I purchased a few hundred rounds of .22 WMR. Although .22 LR is now available, .22 Magnum is very hard to find. I also ordered some items from Brownells: 2 Five Star .410 GA speed loaders for my S&W Governor and a moonclip removal tool.

    1. JR says:

Sounds good Irish-7. I forgot to mention I also just renewed my NRA membership. My local shop has tons of .22 Magnum but they are the only ones.

Your right CaptTurbo – interesting times we live in and regardless how this works out this is a bad turn for those who love freedom.

I concur, CaptTurbo! I wonder if the Obama Administration killed Justice Scalia? The next appointment tips the balance of power in the Supreme Court. I predict rulings against the 2nd Amendment will be the first priority on the new majority’s agenda.

Didn’t do much in the way of long-term storage, but we did finish our annual Spring stock-up. My boy’s back home, so the food only lasts half as long as usual! Barring a catastrophe, we’re set for 6 months, including toilet paper. The rest of the sanitation gear should cover the whole year. Since we got rid of nearly all of our debts and the job is stable, we should be able to keep adding to everything. I did get some powdered eggs and am trying both molasses and honey powders for the first time. That’s my daughter’s department. I gave up cooking when she hit her teens and decided she could do better. For the most part, she can!

Got these eggs from Rainy Day, just because they’re the only ones I could find selling the small cans right now. Haven’t tried them yet, but I like their other products. We’re currently using eggs from Emergency Essentials. Their products have always been good, but the kids won’t eat them scrambled. We use them mostly for baking, and they’ve always worked well.

  6. Fred C says:

Added 6 #10 cans of freeze dried Veggies from Emergency Essentials. Placed some non spoiling emergency items in Home Depot 5 gal buckets to make them easier to move if I need to head out to the “safe land”. Added to my firearms by trading a P38 for a new Sig P229 plus cash of course. Practiced at a shooting range with the new SIG and a S&W. The SIG is very accurate. Good advice from Single Mom, I need to get some powdered eggs to store. Anyone know how long they can be stored. I usually store in sealed Mylar bags.

    1. SingleMom says:

Fred, I don’t know the shelf life of eggs, but I do know we keep using ours long after the “opened” expiration date and have never had a problem. While we don’t like eating them by themselves, which is why I prefer the smaller cans, they’ve been invaluable when we had to live off our stores and were baking our own bread.

I’d have to say all I did was research and reading, and a few spring getting ready chores .. I’m a limited to weekends these days and we had a family member killed in and auto accident and the other hurt real bad .. So most of my weekend was supporting wife and making sure she knew i was there doing house work, dishes, talking.. watching sappy girl flicks with her. I’m the one that puts in in a box.. I can look it later if I need it.. mission first .. feelings after. Looking to get off Directv as we discussed previously .. did some there. paid off two CC accounts .. one left ..
Looked at 100 – 1500 fps 22 cal Air riles, and inline cross bows…

On the scalia thing.. yeah 4 4 split and the dems pushing for immediate confirmation has happened before. Repubs blocked until the next pres. I am not sure these have the guts since they have done zip in the second term. With what’s on the docket ..”Obamabcare” among others it could be real bad. Their pick would have 40 years on the bench. I did read one article that said Scalia had a pillow ON his head and not under it. Surely that isn’t correct.

I also read where Saudi was getting 400K soldiers together to enter Syria. Obviously to prevent Syria from being taken by ISIS and Saudi would be next. Soooo .. that would bring Russia in possibly ,, I can only think if our Muslim friendly CIC had done as he surely was advised we would not be here. What piece of umm ,work that guy is.
All that to say I loathe everyday I cannot do something to get closer because this has me worried,

I also read where a place in Nevada is charging customers a %40 Tax for supplementing with Solar to kill that competition, as well a paying less for the KW’s they agreed to take back into the grid.. That points out a weakness in using ANY municipality backed by local or federal government.

As I said .. sitting with wife unit I had way to much time to read.. got me all worked up and anxious. I’m thinking I need to do something every day and look for new ways.
awright .. Push forward gang.. Everyday is a blessing.

G48, my take is that the Saudi’s lack the logistical ability unless supported by the US which they would most likely get. I believe there is a big smoke screen in that they are in reality supporting ISIS and so is Turkey. I believe that want to enter Syria to using ISIS as a ruse. Remember Turkey, Saudi Arabia and ISIS and many of the smaller radicals are in fact (Sunni) while Assad forces are (Shia) which is why he’s getting backing from Iran and Hezbollah. The US is also supporting the Sunis as well. Yes Russia may well be drawn further into the conflict, they have the same defense agreement with Syria that the US has with Israel.

Got in on some vegie sales at my local stores and canned it all up. my wife’s mom now wants to have a (Go Bag) of some sort, so will have to sit with her and see what exactly she wants and is willing to put in it.

Went to the Home Storage Center and picked a case of rice, macaroni, and dehydrated potatoes. Ordered a 75 round drum mag for the AK and found a store that had 22 mag at $39.95 plus tax so I bought one for now.
