The Top 5 Best Apocalyptic Movies

Over the last week I have watched a couple of newer movies with distinct apocalyptic themes. This got me thinking of my favorites and the ones I felt were the best.  One of the reason I enjoy watching these kinds of movies is they get me thinking. I mean – putting myself in the situations involved gives me ideas on how to handle them. It is a good thing to envision and visualize situations and conditions.

Here are my top 5 best apocalyptic movies.

1. Red Dawn

2. I Am Legend

3. The Book of Eli

4. The Day After Tomorrow

5. Contagion

Ask me next week and the list will likely be totally different. These movies entertain and provoke thought. The actions of the characters are certainly not a guide of what to do in various circumstances.

Now go grab the popcorn!!!

    The old movie On The Beach is well done and very depressing, won’t learn prep stuff but will remind you to get what you can out of every day. I actually like The Hunger Games for showing grit, how evil bad guys can be, and how evil the people who say they’re on your side can be. The old Grizzly Adams movies showed winter survival. Enemy of the State showed you how fast and how much TPTB know about you and will do bad things with it even if you’re blameless, real eye opener, nonstop action.

    Duncan here, I watched Omega man several times through the years, before I was prepping. Wish I had gotten the hint sooner!! I really like Book of Eli, The Road, Original Red Dawn, The Postman, Water World( some interesting concepts ).

    Again, we think very much alike, Brother! I’d rate the movies that you had #3 through #5 as my top 3 favorite apocalyptic films. Personally, I loathed “The Road”! Why did the author/producer/director only give him a few bullets? I think that I would have remained in or around the underground shelter that they found. The ending was not what I expected either……..

    Y’all are forgetting the Original End of the WORLD movie ” Tornado Alley ” With it’s Carnivorous Cockroaches & Scorpion’s the size of a late 60’s sized VW BUG ! & then JR’s #1, 4, 3, & then the never made for big screen movie based on the killer e-book ” LIGHTS OUT ! & then all of the made for SYFY channel movies based on this subject.

    Soilant Green, what happens when the government can no longer provide what it promises. A major snow storm for DC, yes, but a shut down of the government what would happen in a nation wide emergency?

    And if you want a good perspective on what or who will be running the streets in every major city, just catch a few episodes of Gangland on Spike TV. It’s a real eye opener on how ruthless and brutal these gangs can and will be.

    After reading the comments I obviously have missed a bunch of apocalyptic movies. I would have to say The book of Eli is my favorite, then I Am Legend at #2. I saw The Omega Man at the theater when I was a young boy and loved it. The Road was a good movie but more than a bit depressiing. I prefer happy endings even in an apocalypse. I thought Goodbye World was pretty good. It offered up a few lessons, like how stupid it is to plan for the collapse of society but maintain your anti-gun foolishness. The Postman was another that I liked. Anyone remember A Boy and His Dog? I saw it but don’t remember it at all…..

      I appreciate all the movies I forgot to see being being posted. Will check out Goodbye World. A Boy and His Dog…young Don Johnson, very bizarre movie, not worth it IMO. Where have all the people gone is free posted on YouTube, worth checking for older movies before copyright hassles. Or maybe everyone involved is no longer with us. Panic in the year zero, when they’re in the gun shop, great scene.

    While ‘War of the Worlds’ is generally not considered apocalyptic (the ending is classic Deus Ex Machina) the basic plot of one culture (Martian) versus another (Human) is as old an humanity itself. A culture that can not adapt (as the Martians did not) will ultimately fail.
