This last week has been interesting. With gun control being a hot topic and many in Congress agreeing that some measure of gun control legislation is needed gun shops of busy. Call it unneeded panic buying or being prudent I put back more ammunition. My emphasis was on .223/5.56 and 9mm.
I also bought 3 additional Magpul PMAG’s.
I ordered a few items but will talk about them once they come in.
Oh – I am pretty disappointed with the Academy chain of sporting good stores. They have moved all the “tactical” long guns to the back. They are still selling AR’s and such but you have to ask for them. Ridiculous. I’m not sure they will ever get another penny from me again.
So – what have you done this past week?
JR
Did you notice that Daniel Defense has terminated their distribution agreement with Academy? I’m assuming because of their stance on AR – pattern rifles.
I saw that GotUR6. I like seeing a company that will stand up for something even if it costs them money.
This week I too focused on ammo and mags, purchased 223/556, 9 mm, and .22 and added 2 mags for the guns. Added water, assorted OTC meds, and bandaging materials. Looked at trailers as a bug out option. Happy Fathers Day Rourke and all the dads! Keep Looking UP
Yes Rourke I’m with you on Academy!
Oh, one happy Father here, been looking for a PMR 30 without luck. When I opened my gift from my kids, my son had tracked one down for me. Also, shells and a light, that also functions as a strobe.
Good job. Happy Fathers Day to you as well. Hope you like the PMR as much as I do. Cannot emphasize the important of loading magazine properly. I only put 20-26 rounds in mine. Once I get above 22 or so the thin brass casing of the 22 Mag starts to dent pretty good. Hornady Critical Defense so far has been the most reliable ammo.
Thanks Rourke, was going to ask you about tips on it. Have been looking some for ammo, right now seems to be tight here. I’ll keep my eyes on Hornady ammo and not overload mag. Looking forward to shooting this weekend. Keep Looking UP
DH purchased 556 and I concentrated on food preps. Slow week in preps due to too much OT at work…but I will take it while it lasts. Extra money for preps is how I look at it. 🙂
Might have been a slow week but so much further along than the Sheeple.
I made up Anderson Power Pole connectors for all of my deep cycle batteries and mobile radio gear. If you are not familiar with this most excellent of connectors see https://powerwerx.com. I recommend purchasing one of the more expensive crimp tools with replaceable dies. Many of these tools have three die combinations for up to 45 ampere connectors. Power poles are available all the way to 300 amperes. The best connector I’ve ever used and the ARRL portable radio standard connector. There is even an amateur radio standard for polarity connection for these genderless connectors so anyone’s power supply (battery, etc) will mate with anyone else’s.

Thanks for the info. This is an area I am totally lacking in. Any helpful info would be appreciated.
Look at the powerwerx link and then this tutorial at ARRL: http://www.arrl.org/files/file/Public%20Service/TrainingModules/Technical/Anderson%20powerpole.pdf
Using these connectors isn’t as hard is it might appear, it just takes a little thought on layout if you wish to use the amateur radio interface standard (as shown). Remember red on the right from the wire end (similar to navigation lighting on airplanes and boats). These are truly genderless connectors and not hermaphroditic hence their universal acceptance in the ARES/RACES amateur radio community and popularity elsewhere.
The crimp tool I recommend can be purchased at Amazon:

Anyone making their own power supplies or any project involving connecting/disconnecting appliances/equipment from 12vdc batteries should consider Anderson power pole products.

What Academy Sports did was the same thing Dick Sporting goods did after sandy hook. Never spent a dime in that store since. Bought more mags and ammo!
What did Dicks do?
Dicks cancelled paid Christmas layaway ARs and pulled guns from shelves. I quit shopping there.
Us, too, as of now. Their Salesforce always sucked, anyhow.
With you there!
Ordered mags and ammo early in week. Stopped by Nichols Gun Store on trip and picked up some 22LR, which they had in stock on sale 10% off. I was shocked getting 2 bricks of 22LR for $25.19 each before taxes. Its been hard finding it in my area so this was a great Fathers Day gift. I just cannot pay $50 brick, it’s not right. Once settled in at relative house, went to Cabelas and picked up some sale items for BOBs. $15.99 life straws, various misc including hat mounted mosquito netting. Hit up Gander Mountain for some 5.11 pants at 20% off. Sales are good. Also ordered a Sneaky Pete holster.
PR- Powerpoles sure are great. Last month I picked up a new portable U1 battery setup from Quick Silver Radio compete with powerpoles on the portable container. There are so many great powerpole accessories available- its great. Trying to get my vehicle and bag setups going.
Happy Fathers Day to all, take care,
Jonathan
Nichol’s is very close by me and when I mention “my local shop” that is the place. They are ALWAYS loaded up with .22LR and at good prices too. Looks like you had an excellent week.
As a LGS owner we saw a incredible increase last week, we sold as much as we did for the entire month of May. The intresting thing was it was not just the AR platform, we sold a bit of everything, it seems to us that all those that have been on the fence, there are still those out there, they have been motivated. The great thing about this is that we get to educate more of the public. Was way to busy this week to work on ourselves being it was the entire family on deck for last week. Stay focused and stay safe.
Thanks for the info Andy. I am a firm believer in supporting local gun shops whenever possible. Glad to see you swinging by here.
The debate should not be firearms, but why FBI & DHS vetted the Orlando shooter on 3 different occasions, finally capitulating to the DOJ’s ‘shall not offend’ PC doctrine. Let’s get the discussion back to where it should be. Those agencies are vetting the refugees as this is written. What could possibly go wrong?
desertrat,
I don’t think FBI or DHS ‘vetted,’ the shooter, rather these organizations investigated possible terrorist connection and failed to prove linkage. All too often in law enforcement, it isn’t a crime until it is a crime, which is why law enforcement is considered reactive rather than proactive (and we might proactive LE if living under the Code Napoleon where one is considered guilty and it is the burden of the individual to prove innocence).
911 works for summoning post incident medical care and investigatory assistance; it doesn’t do so well when summoning crisis driven real time tactical help. Which by the way, is why so many states approve concealed carry.
The victims valued having a good time over self reliance and once again Darwin was proven right (survival of the fittest).
PR
My (limited to the real process) of the ‘vetting’ is that is/was done rises to that of those seeking ‘refugee’ status- a 3-5 year process compacted into x months as is currently being done and which DHS has stated that they cannot really conduct a proper check. Added to that is the DOJ mandate “…to not offend…” and there is a recipe for disaster. As stated, the real issue is how the agencies failed and how to fix it without a loss of Rights through adjudication.
desertrat,
We’re on the same page – I’m with the Trump on immigration and the moslem horde.
I suspect the FBI was following DOJ mandated minimum investigatory response. More and more these days, DOJ seeks to limit the FBI’s ability to investigate crime. This practice started back in the Clinton Administration when the propose appointees couldn’t pass background investigations.

It is frustrating knowing this guy had been on the radar. Makes you really think about all those “refugees” that are being “vetted” and what they are capable of.
Happy Fathers Day to all you prepping Dads out there !!!!! Lightning
This week I prepped by tending to the bees, weeding and watering the garden and orchard.
Placed an order for antibiotics and vitamins.Stocked up on strawberries which are in season right now.
217,000 folks w/o phone and electric in Richmond ,Va from strong storms. Lightning
Thanks Lightning!
To ALL Dads, have a great Fathers Days. Make sure you hug, kiss, and tell your kids how much you love them every time you can.
I thank God every day that I did. No matter where we were. We lost our son this past August. He was 40 years young. A 17 year veteran. He was pushed out because he was going blind in one eye…he could still shoot better than most any man I’ve known.
This was a bitter-sweet day for us, as was Mothers Day. But thank God we have a beautiful daughter, son-in-law, and two great grandsons.
Take care you all, and thank God every night you go to sleep for what you have. You just never know.
So sorry to hear about your son. Things like that really pull at the heart strings.
Added 1000 rds of 223 and added a Fobus Holster for my Sig. I would think that ammo will now go up in price or become hard to get again (or both) so get some more while you can.
Also went to the gun range to sharpen my skills more. I had noted in the past on the forum that I didn’t like the trigger pull on my SIG 229 but with some practice I have gotten used to it more and can shoot a decent pattern. I guess practice is cheaper the replacing the trigger!
Thanks Fred – good supply of ammo put back. I like Fobus holsters and have a few myself.
Continuing to work toward a self sustaining homestead. Covered the potatoes with leaf mulch, picked blueberries, pulled weeds, turned compost. Lot’s of gardening stuff. Adding supers to the bee hives this week. Also introducing new hens to the flock and separating the “new” roosters out of the flock for meat.
Not much in regards to ammo. It seems that the recent rhetoric from the gubment types has caused another run. It seems that there are a good number of folks who don’t seem to understand that NONE of the individual amendments in the Bill of Rights can stand alone. Truly sad.
Great progress JC. Agree totally on “gubment”.
How come no body is bringing up the question of why it took several hours for the Orlando SWAT to show up, whats the story of the night club security off duty cop whats the story there?
Academy Sorts has had a liberal attitude for a while now. I have spent thousands with them but started a boycott on them six months ago. I’m done with them.
Spent around 4 hours with my grandsons shooting everything from 22’s up to 30.06. Good practice and a lot of fun. Now gotta go restock some more ammo…like y’all know…you can never have enough.
Y’all take care and keep yer ammo dry.
Sounds like you had some fun!
No prepping this week. Drove to Illinois to see 85 year old mother. Having a ball, clearing brush, trimming trees & working on the house. And reminiscing of the old days on the farm. The trip was enlightening watching the way people pack their vehicles to travel. Don’t want to follow many of them. Concealed carry was OK all the way to the state of “gun safe zones”. Then had to lock everything in the back of the truck. Oh well it was worth it. Lost power last night for 3 hours and not a single generator was started. Argued/discussed AR-15s & 2nd Ammendment with sister & brother in law. Besides Ma not understanding me grabbing our BOBs when the power went out they think I’m wacked about 2nd A. Can’t believe they are my kin sometimes. Sorry for the ramble but this week was an eye opener.
I feel your pain Gunner. I struggle dealing with Liberals at most any level.
