The “One Big Beautiful Bill” passed by Congress and sent to President Trump for signing includes provisions related to firearm parts, specifically targeting regulations under the National Firearms Act (NFA). Based on available information, the bill contains the following firearm-related provisions:

• Elimination of the $200 Excise Tax: The bill removes the $200 tax imposed by the NFA on suppressors (silencers), short-barreled rifles (SBRs), short-barreled shotguns (SBSs), and “any other weapons” (AOWs) as defined by the NFA.
• Removal of Suppressors from NFA Regulations: The legislation includes language from Section 2 of the Hearing Protection Act, which completely removes suppressors from the NFA, eliminating the need for ATF registration and associated regulatory burdens for these devices.
• Deregulation of Short-Barreled Rifles and Shotguns: The bill ends NFA taxes and registration requirements for short-barreled rifles (SBRs) and short-barreled shotguns (SBSs), aligning with provisions from the Stop Harassing Owners of Rifles Today (SHORT) Act.
• Removal of “Any Other Weapons” (AOWs) from NFA: The bill also eliminates NFA taxes and registration for AOWs, a category that includes certain firearms like disguised guns or those with specific modifications.

This is the latest I’ve been able to determine. It’s not the easiest thing to decipher the vast amount of information in something like this Bill that is so huge.

We’ll see the true impact over the coming months.

I’m sure this will come as a complete surprise, but, I am not an ex-Navy Seal. I know I know – you’re shocked. You’ll recover I’m sure. Rather than a “tactical operator,” I’m just some dude who has had a decent amount of firearms training. “Decent” means a lot more than some and a lot less than others.

I have a couple of “kits” or loadouts. These kits are geared toward AR-style rifles along with a sidearm. Well, one battle belt I have is set up strictly for an AR-only. There are reasons behind this. I’ll cover at another time.

I’ve been rethinking my gear. Seasonality is a big factor here in Maine. To cut to the chase, I picked up several of these magazine pouches a while back. They are inexpensive copies of a premium product out on the market. I ordered and took a chance.

Impressions so far are very good. Upon reception, they felt very rugged and durable. I had expected very thin material and questionable stitching. Neither is an issue. At my current job, I run a sewing operation so I’ve got a bit of insight on the stitching.

One concern I have with this kind of magazine pouch is if the bungee that holds the magazine tight will relax and lose its strength over time. I loaded up a few of the pouches, adjusted the tension to a very snug fit, and have left them for the past 5-6 weeks. So far so good. Did they feel like they lost ANY tension at all? Yup – just a tad, a smidgin, maybe a wee bit. Exactly what I would have expected.

I’m going to put together another chest rig as well as a battle belt using some of these. Can’t beat the price.

Oh – where did I find these little gems?

That’s right. Temu.

I’ve ordered from Temu several times over the past two years and a solid 80% of the stuff was better than I expected. Another 10% was good. A decent deal, but, could be better. The last 10% below par and wished I’d never ordered. Not bad.

BTW – I’m well aware of where Temu items are made. I have a very good understanding of global trade, manufacturing operations, and supply chains. So yeah – I ordered from Temu.

Its compatibility with Glock 19 parts is a bonus, and despite being a budget-friendly option, I’ve had no complaints regarding its reliability or performance.

For the price, it’s a great choice for personal defense or range shooting. I know this might sound crazy but I like my Dagger more than my Glock 17.  It’s not even close.

After owning the Kel-Tec PMR-30 for the last eight years(give or take), I can report it’s been a very reliable firearm – with a couple of caveats.  Limiting the magazine to 25 rounds and sticking to quality ammunition like Hornady Critical Defense has made all the difference in ensuring consistent performance. The PMR is a blast to shoot. I have a few spare magazines and having them loaded with 25 rounds each will give me 75 rounds of shooting before I need to reload. A lot of fun!!

When the PMR first came out I imagined it would make a great “bug out” gun to throw in a backpack with extra mags and ammunition. More powerful than a .22LR and much lighter than most every other pistol out there seemed a good fit. The problem is the reliability. While it works extremely well and I rarely have jams nowadays – it’s not reliable enough to use a defensive firearm. It’s really a shame, but, it is what it is.

I would still love to get the carbine version of the PMR – the CMR-30. Maybe someday, however, every time I come across one it’s on the expensive side. Anyone reading this and has a CMR-30 – please comment and let us know what you think.

Not a very detailed review here. The Kel-Tec PMR-30 is a unique and really fun gun to shoot.

With all the craziness in the world and the level of uncertainty, tactical supplies are usually high on the priority list for stocking up. It has been a couple years since I’ve made any major purchases in the realm of tactical supplies. Why? Largely I feel pretty good where I am when it comes to ammunition, magazines, optics, etc. I actually have a few spare red dots which is a good thing I suppose.

The recent attempted assassination of President Trump has ammunition sales surging. I’ll say it here and likely again towards the end of this post – if you are in need of ammunition or magazines get straight right now.

I find most preparedness-minded folks make decisions when it comes to firearms, magazines, and the like more so based on emotion rather than logic and common sense. Hey – I’m guilty as well. The reality is for the defense of the property as well as utility usage I could make do with anywhere between one and three different firearms.

A quick example:

An AR-15 variant can hunt, protect, and dispatch critters and pests. One gun. That’s it. OK – that will end up being another article or video.

I remember living through the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban.

The 1994 Assault Weapons Ban was a federal law in the United States enacted on September 13, 1994. The legislation prohibited the manufacture, transfer, and possession of certain semi-automatic firearms defined as assault weapons, as well as high-capacity ammunition magazines that could hold more than ten rounds. The ban included specific firearms by name and also applied to semi-automatic rifles, pistols, and shotguns with certain military-style features. The law was part of the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994 and had a sunset provision, meaning it expired after ten years on September 13, 2004, unless renewed by Congress, which it was not. The effectiveness and impact of the ban have been subjects of ongoing debate.

The level of frustration I felt buying a Beretta M92 with a 10-rd magazine and spending $50 for a full-capacity magazine ranked right up there. Today, many mags for pistols are $50, but back then, it was ridiculous. Right now prices are great and I continue to promote many spare magazines. You never know when suddenly you can’t get them.

Something I have not spent enough time on is firearm utilization and maneuvering at night….in darkness. Living where I live it is much easier for me to practice. Another advantage of living in the woods.

In the Instagram post below, I shared a photo I took while moving around and in between vehicles while scanning and observing the area around me. Having defensive tools at the ready mounted with illumination is critical as far too many only train during the day.

The ever-popular Ruger 10/22 is one of my all-time favorite firearms. Inexpensive, reliable, with good accuracy – and inexpensive to shoot makes it not just a fun plinker but a capable survival rifle.

In the very near future I’m going to be putting together a custom Ruger 10/22 with the goal of the project to have a very handy, reliable , and accurate semi-auto – and suppressed.  A tack driver out to 50 yards and capable beyond. The most important aspect of the entire project is…….it’s got to look COOL!!! Think about it: When you’re saving damsels in distress from roving brain-eating zombies and you putting round after round into the undead – you’ve got too look cool!!

As I gather components, the first one ordered is a Magpul Hunter X-22 stock. Seen in the picture above, I love the style, features, and ergonomics. If wrapped in a ghillie suit looking over a ridge waiting for another zombie to send a dose of medicine into the brain of the walking dead – comfort is a big benefit. My favorite caliber is the .22LR and that’s followed closely by the .22 Magnum. Yup – both are rimfire smaller calibers and not the typical 5.56mm, 9mm, or 44 Magnum that many would proclaim. The .22LR and .22 Magnum are my favorites for a few simple reasons – cost, ease of use, and because that’s the way it is.

I’ve had numerous .22LR firearms from a Squire Bingham M16R to the Charter Arms AR-7 all the way to a modern customized Ruger 10/22. For the .22 Magnum, I currently own the Kel-Tec PMR 30-rd .22 Mag pistol. It’s so sweet and fun to shoot. Pure entertainment!!!! My future father-in-law has a Ruger LCR in .22 Magnum and I’m really wanting one for pocket carry.  I’ve been looking at the Ruger Precision .22 Magnum Rifle as a possibility to add to my battery. While I love the .22LR the .22 Magnum offers extended range and power the LR simply doesn’t provide.

Hey – maybe a Ruger Precision in .22LR and .22 Magnum each would fit in my gun safe!

A few random thoughts revolving around all things “tactical” in nature……

• With extreme rarity, every firearm in existence is capable of higher performance than the shooter can provide. While there are firearm accessories that can enhance and allow a shooter to utilize said firearm with higher efficiency and performance, I’m amazed at the constant drivel over the latest “combat pistol” and AR-this and AR-that. This topic deserves an entire article and maybe a video because the firearms industry has done a fantastic job convincing millions that if they don’t have the latest optic, the best trigger, and that special tacti-cool accessory then you simply cannot survive the coming zombie apocalypse.

• Light as a Defensive Tool – As I evaluate and make decisions on priorities at our homestead, I’ve considered mounting light bars similar to what is on big redneck trucks that blind oncoming traffic on backwoods country roads. BTW – I love those trucks! My thought is to put these high-powered light bars on all four sides of the cabin so I can flick them on with one switch(or be selective) and be able to see all around the property while largely blinding anyone who may be nearby. Obviously, this may not be desirable in every single possible situation, however, it seems to me to be an inexpensive means to illuminate the immediate surrounding area. Maybe there’s a better alternative that is specifically meant for outdoor illumination.

• I promote Palmetto State Armory for one very specific reason – VALUE.  I can only speak from my own experience and for me, PSA has provided excellent reliability with good quality and extremely attractive prices. The bottom line is folks who could not afford Daniel Defense and Sig nor FN can get a reliable and accurate firearm at excellent prices. Period. Forget the most elite tactical know-it-alls that promote the most expensive brands. If you aim at it and can hit it – well, there you go.

• There’s no better time than RIGHT NOW to stock up on magazines and ammunition as we travel forward into such an uncertain future. Maybe the zombie apocalypse won’t happen. Maybe every day is just one day closer to when some demented tyrannical President signs an executive order to place a 1,000% “fee” on guns and ammunition. Maybe. I haven’t forgotten the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban, nor the firearms market after Sandy Hook, and how I had wished I had stocked up on more magazines and ammunition. That feeling sucked and I’m determined for it not to happen again.

• I’ve owned a few Bushnell TRS-25 red dot optics since it came out decades ago. My personal SHTF weapon  – a short-barrelled AR that I call “Venom” – has one mounted atop and it continues to do what it’s supposed to do. I look at the target, both eyes are open, and superimpose the dot onto the area where I need rounds to impact. It works every time. So – for around $100 the TRS-25 provides fast target acquisition, long battery life, and has zero problems staying sighted in. I have zero urge to put something else on Venom.

Back in the 80’s when the AR-15 and M16 were going through several transitional versions like a teenager changes their clothing style, the HBAR by Colt was released. I remember as a young survivalist that the HBAR was simply, “cool!”

This is around the same time the Colt Combat Elite .45ACP came out and the Colt Delta 10mm 1911. Yeah, I was a Colt fanboy back then. Several Colt guns including the Python and Combat Commander remain on my “wish list”.

Today the HBAR can be bought or built. Why would someone take that path? Well, if the goal of a defensive firearm is to put rounds on target accurately in rapid succession – the HBAR with its 20″ barrel is an excellent choice. Running much heavier than a standard M4 or CAR-15, recoil is pretty much nothing. The longer barrel ensures maximum velocity. Recoil? Well, pretty much any AR has minimal recoil. Muzzle rise(different than recoil) is much better than a carbine variant.

So – I have not had an HBAR and I’ve never shot one. I’ve dreamt of having one though and that’s good enough, right?  I’ve read numerous articles about them back in the day. I’d really like to build one at some point as the original is just too expensive.
