This week flew by. Normal life combined with events going on in Charlotte, a DOA stove, and a trip to my brothers in Georgia things have been busy.
A few things:
- Finally completed the first raised bed in the garden. Sized 4 foot by 4 foot. Added soil so it is ready to go.
- Received in my order of 10 7-round 1911 45ACP magazines.
- Purchased a spare Springfield XD9 magazine.
- Purchased the Mossberg Patriot bolt action in .243 for my youngest(bottom). Hunting season is fast approaching.
- Installed a scope on my Ruger American .308 Winchester(top). Need to sight both in while in Georgia.
- Picked up 200 rounds 5.56 for $6.46 a box(brass case). Great deal!
- Worked on designing an audible perimeter alarm for property/camp security. Almost done.
That’s about it….
Your turn.

Need clean water?
Robbed the bees. Shot and sighted in the Mosin Nagant that my grandfather gave me when I was 10. Never shot it before this weekend. Had a gunsmith check it out prior to shooting, for safety. My wife canned more grape juice and made jelly. We both canned the last of the tomatoes.
Will continue to finish the garden stuff over the next several weeks as well as getting in more fire wood and general winter stuff that has to be done every year.
Started clearing out the garden for fall planting. Where has this year gone? Spent $20 in the dollar store. Cheap window alarms, wire cutters, matches just impulse stuff. Cleaning shop and garage so I can find everything. Seems like I I have more than I can find. Guns, Ammo & beans are the only thing really 100% organized. Read 1/2 of 299 Days: The Preparation. Don’t know why I’ve waited so long. I’m hooked.
Good feedback from the people that I gave copies of The Coming Anerican Reformation. They are thinking and asking questions. “As we watch the world”
Re-seeded some broccoli. Out of the first planting only four of twelve sprouted. The moringa saplings are doing great. I rooted moringa cuttings from some branches that a neighbor pruned off his huge tree. I intend to keep my little moringa “forest” pruned low and bushy for easy harvesting.
I have been mega-dosing on vegetables for several months with garden greens and other nutritious plants I have growing on the place. I can tell you that I can clearly feel the positive changes going on in my body. I highly recommend this to all of you. Load the blender and make some killer green soup! Soon I will have enough mature moringa to boost that rocket fuel even higher octane levels.
Procured a third UBC tank (270 gal) for rain water storage, purchased a Ruger 10/22 for some additional firepower and scrounged up some .22 ammo. setting up planter box for medicinal herbs.
Made jelly, lots and lots of jelly, added Goji berries to some of the grape jelly, looking forward to trying it! Froze squash and canned beans. Off all this week – ready and excited! Found 22 wmr at Walmart.
– Keep Looking up
Received my 1100watt inverter, a power adapter for the Big Buddy heater, cleaned and organized the shop. Laid in more dog food, cat food, bar soap, and antibacterial soap. I do not use a lot of the anti bacterial, but saw an article that the government wants to remove some of them. My local store is having their case good sale next week. Making my list as we speak.
Had ordered a a Sawyer water filter from Amazon a couple weeks back but chose a third-party seller. Gave it a few extra days for delivery, still no show. Amazon is great to deal with customer service wise so now i start over. Sorta like life in general…..sometimes it takes a do-over to get it right. Thinking about all the people here in the midwest affected by flooding or are waiting for the crest yet after rain last night. Hard enough to clean up and rebuild…..was just thinking how hard it would be if your preps were flooded and one had to start over.
I do have a question for those who might have the understanding to sort it out. In watching a TV news magazine story several days back, the capability of the USA to assess an incoming nuclear strike and then respond to it was discussed. My question is COULD it be known if the warheads were EMPs or a regular nuclear assault on the country? Would EMPs set off, as in “One Second After,” be track-able or even have enough time to respond to by the military? ….inquiring minds want to know…….
Joyce. My DW asked me after watching all of the flooding how much would it cost us to re-outfit or even how long to pack up everything. We live in VA but were spared. Now she has me doing more thinking than I was ready for. A lot of people are rethinking. That is good.
Good question, not my specialty but those are air bursts, dk how NORAD could tell if missile will be air burst or continue on to explode lower just from plotted trajectory.
Thanks for the comments guys…..looking forward to others as well. There are SO MANY possibilities in a crisis situation that one’s never able to have it all covered. Being able to adjust to things on the fly is our most valuable asset. Having MANY capable individuals input….priceless!
Joyce- exc. questions. I imagine Panhandle Rancher and a few others might know.
Lightning
Thanks Lightning 🙂 have been hoping your clan is gaining ground and feeling more normal after the last several weeks of struggle. Fall is my favorite time of year though that first frost ALWAYS catches me by surprise. The corn/beans have been golden and quite crispy for almost a month and the farmers have harvest well underway. Afraid i was a tad late to get my late season garden plantings in….no excuse for it, i MUST do better. Have, however, been saving seed like a mad woman ! My favorite, so far, is Star of David okra…. What ever i DO get done, it never feels like enough. Onward by any and all means possible!
Every blast produces an EMP… the only real difference is the altitude of the detonation. Detonate int he atmosphere above a target and you get less physical destruction but a much wider coverage of the EMP effect. You would also get less fallout with a high altitude detonation, since the radioactive fallout come from the raining back down of radioactive particles irradiated when the blast is as ground level of below.. (the mushroom cloud). A detonation in the atmosphere has many times fewer particles to work with. Ground level would filter the EMP effect somewhat for effective distance laterally.
All in all the size of the payload has as much to do with proximity to target. The more fissionable material in the payload, the larger the blast and greater the EMP saturation, again depending on the altitude.
Thanks Goingray58…….this makes it easier to understand some of the particulars. Brings up another tangent of my question though. Since the detonation of a nuclear device would emit an EMP that would affect the grid/electronics AND physically take out grid components, logic would take my thoughts in the direction of a possible domino effect that would probably accomplish a total grid down event. Inquiring minds most likely want to bury heads in the sand at this point….scares the crap out of me for sure. But a minimal attack could do more than most of the public realizes probably.
joyce.. Its a fair thought.. When a part of the grid is shut down suddenly without disconnecting it from the rest .. It can cause a cascading failure, or outage.. They have SOME break points that will stop a cascade when it alarms.. It’s so large and so interconnected they often do not work well.. Even if you could start turning it back on immediately it takes days to systematically energize the grid… If it fails due to EMP it woudl likely require a ton of work to rebuild or replace the equipment. The pieces that could be turned back on that failed due to cascade would need to be isolated from the burned up parts of the grid. Isolation and determination of what was affected would take DAYS or weeks to figure it out.. at a time when there are less than normal conditions. Yeah it woudl be a pretty big deal… I doubt our government would to it .. maybe in the case of secession .. but it could pose a bigger threat than it’s worth.. Never know I don’t guess.. but it’s far more likely to have some half way problem that didn’t include EMP due to Nuclear detonation. All the very important people would want to keep their “stuff” safe and make money .. EMP would not work for that
Mmmmmmm…..true on so many points of probability GG58, thanks for more to chew on.
Gunner – if we lost our preps in a hurricane or tornado -theres no way we could afford to re stock in the same capacity.Thats why we store some at our home and some at our family members . Some in a barn, sheds etc. Some on the first floor and basement and some on the top floor.
My heart breaks when I see the devastation people go through.
Lightning
This week to prepare we bought medical items.Medicated powder, foot powder,
jock itch powder, feminine hygiene products , anti -bacterial soap and hand sanitizer..
First frost here last night. Lightning
ditto on the bees.. 12 gallons, food and other stuff.. Enough so I had to reorganize all the supplies so I could walk through the room. A good thing. Cooler so able to work longer days more comfortably.. almost passed out 3 times this summer .. Not a good thing… seem the dead of winter and the height of summer are not very productive.. Hatched out first ducks and chicks… they can’t seem to tell the difference one form the other until you set a pan of water and the bitty ducks go to play and sit in it.. The chicks did the same and if a chicken had a look and talked it woudl have been .. umm.. let’s say it woudl have been censored words.. was hilarious .. except for the chick. farm humor I guess. Wife passed her CCW 100% and all in the 9, 10, and X . Guess I need to straighten up .. 🙂 Winter garden sprout-lings down.. We are also trying micro-greens… Supposed to be ultra nutritious.. and you can get them inside with just window light.. anyone could .. They are about big enough to use now. Got 11 IBC totes and 5 more coming .. selling some to pay for my IBC habit and aquaponics for the rest. While you have a good source might as well us it. Got 10 more quail .. donated to us. so up to about 165 or so.. no eggs yet.
Anybody successfully dehydrate scrambled eggs ? Or freeze dry them ?
How do you seal your Mylar (flat Iron?) and do you think vacuum sealing in plastic is as good as mylar ? do you vacuum seal mylar ?
So many questions I know, but I am reading a lot of conflicting information and some of it has to be junk info.. or maybe not maybe just different ways to accomplish the same things.
Thanks
GG58
Just recieved my 2 CIMA knives. Only 2 weeks. They are a snug fit, but really just enough for good retention. More than satisfied for $16. Would have paid more and expect I’m going to be getting more for “stocking stuffers”. The USMC SSGT. & ARMY CAPT still enjoy the stockings. Especially when it has a goody like this.
