Fire starting is something many put hours and hours into learning all the different methods so no matter what – fire. Hey – I appreciate that. It’s just something I’ve never really had much interest in. I mean, creating fire from friction generated by woods rubbing against wood sounds like a lot of work compared to flicking the wheel on a lighter. I know, lighters don’t last forever.
I have a lot of lighters.
I also have the Offgrid Fire Starting Kit. In fact, I designed and make these kits. Am I biased? Damn right I am.
The Offgrid Firestarting Kit was designed to be small, portable, inexpensive, and effective. While I am a huge fan of the butane lighter and I have about 80 of them – I realize that having multiple methods to get things flamed up is a good thing.
So this kit has been designed to make fire via a butane lighter, waterproof matches, as well as a ferrocerium rod combined with charcloth and petroleum jelly impregnated cotton balls. If fire is what you are wanting – this kit has all the options to make it happen.
Everything comes in a small, durable metal tin.
Looking at what’s included the butane lighter is the most popular and effective means to get things going towards “El Flamo”. Next up is the ferrocerium rod. The ferro rod has the advantage of thousands of strikes in one rod. The rod included in the kit can be struck thousands of times showering high temp sparks down onto flammable objects such as charcloth, paper, and other tinder.
Speaking of charcloth, several small pieces are included in the kit in a small waterproof zip-lock bag.
Lastly – my favorite firestarter is petroleum jelly impregnated cotton balls. I’ve started hundreds of fires using these from camp fires to fire pits. Several are packed into this kit.
Hey – for $12.99 with free shipping you can’t go wrong.
Oh – I almost forgot. There are waterproof matches are included on top of everything else!

Cotton balls and vaseline hands down is the best, I’m a prepper of ten years now but before that and still to this day I very much enjoy woods craft, woodsmen, survivalist, there are many names, at least these are better than “prepper” the stigma of that name after the National Geographic channel had their series the prepper name was forever linked to crazy people, but that show did in my humble opinion opened up a lot more minds than it closed, I mean prepping boomed after that, but what do I know Obama was President after all, if that didn’t make you want to pack a bag and run into the woods then I’m not what else wood… but I digress, as my good friend Rourke likes to tell me I often sway from subject to subject before making my point, in this case I will agree, but back to my original comments of fire starting, I was saying cotton balls and Vaseline is the best, I’ve used many fire starters, they say it burns in water, it burns after it’s wet and or it’s a fat rope you can cut as little or as much as you need based on the conditions, and all kinds of other really cool things about how there product are better and you have to have it at a mere 10 bucks a item, I’m here to tell you vaseline Soaked cotton balls does the exact same thing, but there’s no marketing crew spending tens of thousands out there to tell you so, just like Vinegar and baking soda and all the wonderful things that you can do with that for cleaning that works as good or better way less money but in that there lyes my point! There’s no money in it for them! Yet it works better than the “gimmicky” crap their trying to convince you in to buying…. This is developed from years of experience into wisdom, something we appreciate or talk about in these modern times is wisdom. Let me leave you with these examples for thought, I live in Fort Myers Florida, we have the Ford and Edison winter estates right down town, in the house the same light 💡 bulbs still shine running day and night for 80 years now, the bulbs were made with Edison’s own two hands and yet they have never been replaced in all these years, why do you think that is? Well it’s because light bulbs were never meant to go bad in the first place, tell me do you open the inside of your walls and replace the electrical wire because it’s gone bad? No lol of course not, a light bulb is a wire with a electrical charge on it that makes it glow, want it to last? Use a heavier gage wire, it’s not rocket science but there’s no money to be made in that is there…. Thus we fill the dumps with hundreds of billions of bulbs over the last 80 years right? Here’s another one you might not know about, Tesla invented a battery that never goes bad, not now not ever, it doesn’t use acid, it used water, it’s called the nickel battery, or like many other of Tesla’s inventions it’s also know as the Edison battery…, people have found these in junk yards from 90 years ago, taken them home, filled them with water and they work like the day the were built.. run them completely dead over and over and over and guess what? They work without damage, they are being produced today but because of the cost of nickel now they are only nickel coated cores not complete nickel like Tesla made them but there about $1,500.00 each…. only set back I can find is freezing the water, that’s right pure clean water inside them, but that doesn’t make any money, can you imagine if everyone had battery’s that lasted forever??? Wonder what 90 years of battery waste has done to our Beautiful planet??? My point is this, try these things, use the things you want to have for when you can’t get it. Buy or make inexpensive kits like this Rourke has put together, I mean 12 bucks gets you a whole lot, I’m not sure how he even makes any money on these kits personally and don’t waste money on the gimmicks because your going to need it for the beans, bullets, and bandages.
When you are old an rickety nothing is better than a good fire.I’ve found a
road flare works just fine. Multiple fires? Get a bunch of flares!!
Thanks Rourke. I want to let others know that UI received my first issue of Prepper magazine and it is excellent. It is worth the subscription. I did not realize that it has been out for several years.
Rourke- you are right- something is very wrong re: shipping. All the more reasons to shop early and to buy more from local places and from MADE in THE USA.
