Is it looting – or surviving?

Watching the news a couple of weeks ago and they were reporting on Hurricane Dorian and the massive destruction in the Bahamas. Looting was a major topic discussed and they even had an interview with one of those “looters”. The news reporter asked the woman how she felt taking items that didn’t belong to her and what did she take during her looting. She explained that she did not feel comfortable taking things, but, felt she had no choice. She went on to say that she went to grocery stores and took food, water, and diapers. She said there are a lot of people that have no food, no water, and there are young children with no diapers.

Here’s my question: Is this looting – or surviving?

When I heard the reporter say that he had interviewed one of the admitted looters I expected they had taken TV’s, computers, shoes, etc. After the interview, I thought to myself – “That’s not looting. That’s surviving!”

Am I wrong?

From my perspective, there was a literal SHTF situation going on and what she did was called surviving.

Food, Water, Diapers, ………neccessities…… in a SHTF situation yes

TVs and Computers….. simple…… looters sponging off of others…..

IMO – looting/stealing is taking because you want, you could pay but you don’t want to. Foraging or scrounging is for survival, you have not other choice; especially after a disaster.

This is easy for me..looting is from the living & active people & business.
Salvage & recovery is from the dead & abandoned.

In the Bahama’s it is not looting as interviewed. It is indeed survival. Had I had a home there but was fortunate enough to evacuate, my neighbors would be welcomed to anything they found. I could always replace it.

It’s all too easy to justify anything. Taking what doesn’t belong to you is theft. If I catch people “surviving” with my property they might well get composted to feed what I grow for survival.

Living in hurricane alley, with warnings of a storm, her husband failed to prepare them. They lose. Time to eat seaweed, and drink and bathe in mud..

Does Bahamas have grocery stores owned by Koreans?
    Then Bahamas has Roof Koreans.

Nobody has any right to loot my prep.
    Darwin wins again.

    PS:
How are you coming with your accountability lists of local commonists progressives liberals feminists activists SocialistJusticeWarriors and other looters coming for your prep?

Ah yes. It’s again time for another disjointed rant from Large Marge!!
There is a clear line between looting/theft and salvaging. I guess you know the women in the interview well enough to say that her husband is to blame for not being prepared.
We never know exactly how we will react in a desperate situation. I doubt if Large Marge has ever been caught up in a real life or death disaster.
There is a term known as “Ethical Preparedness”. Take a look at it.Maybe you will not be so angry and feel better.

LargeMarge – while I am every bit of a “mans man” everyone is responsible for themselves, regardless of gender. In this particular scenario, a Cat 5 literally wiped out the entire infrastructure of the islands of the Bahamas. While “Darwin” may be at play in all our lives regardless of the situation. In this case, options were provided to go to grocery stores – they themselves without power – and take sustenance needed for survival. My perspective? That is survival – not looting.

To sit at home and starve while there is food rotting nearby is idiocy. I’d rather survive. Ethics and morals don’t matter much when you are dead.

Now – I fully agree it is survival or the fittest and in this same situation if people were taking from you, or I – Darwin would come into play.

LargeMarge- They had a CAT 5 storm stall over them for 40 hours straight. The international airport had 5 feet of water. Wonder what a Cat 5 storm over your place for 40 hours would do to your preps? Something tells me that between you and the women they interviewed, Darwin would prevail in her favor. She did what she had to do to survive!!!
