Scenario: Mid-February. The snow has been falling lightly for several hours adding close to 3 inches to the 8 already covering the countryside. We’ve covered close to 3 miles hitting two tree stands as well as one set of powerlines looking for a good size deer. Although dressed for the weather the chill goes to the bone.
No deer today.
As we approach the house all evidence of the sun’s presence disappears and darkness makes its full appearance. Smoke from the fireplace dances in the air and we know the house will offer not just shelter – but warmth and comfort. Opening the door a tsunami of heat – and the smell of a waiting meal slam into us.
Home.
Coats are off, shoes left at the door, and seats at the table are quickly filled. Steaming bowls of beef stew and rice are placed for each person. The potatoes, carrots, and glistening gravy beckon to be consumed.

Food storage is not very glamorous nor exciting. Starving even less so. I’m a big believer in stirring what you eat and eating what you store. One of my favorite food storage survival meals is beef stew with rice. Yup – store what you eat and eat what you store.
Why is this such a good food storage meal?
Beyond the fantastic flavor, it’s super simple to make. Boil some water for the rice. Easy! For the beef stew – open can and dump it in a saucepan and heat. Next, dump the beef stew on the rice.
Pretty complex, huh?
From a nutritional perspective, beef stew is very balanced nutritionally. For a typical can there are about 500 calories – then add the rice. Very hearty!
Running $2.57 per 20 ounce can and a shelf life of many years beef stew is an affordable food storage option. Add the very inexpensive rice and you’ve got a winning combination.
