Current Events and the Decline of America – Part #1

Mayhem. Violence. Looting. Destruction. Threats. Murders. Curfews. Civil Unrest.

Cities across the United States are burning. Literally.

The wrongful death of George Floyd under the knee of a police officer has lit a powder keg that has exploded. Cities across the nation are dealing with pandemonium as protesting turns into violent, destructive riots.

Cities with major protests/riots include Atlanta, Austin, Boston, Charlotte, Columbia, Denver, Detroit, Dallas, Fort Lauderdale, Grand Rapids, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, Minneapolis, New York City, Oakland, Phoenix, Portland, Oregon, Raleigh, Richmond, San Antonio, Salt Lake City, San Francisco, San Jose, Seattle, St. Louis, and Washington, D.C. Across all these cities protestors are causing mass destruction as vehicles are hit with numerous items such as bricks, bottles, clubs, and flames. Stores are being broken into, robbed, and in many cases set on fire.

Death and injury did not stop with George Floyd’s unfortunate murder. Numerous people have been killed and injured while engaged in rioting – or simply being in the wrong place at the wrong time. It’s unfortunate, and somehow disturbingly ironic, that the majority of victims are a result of black-on-black violence.

The latest outcry from protestors and those who support them is to defund police. In Minneapolis, a “veto-proof majority of the City Council committed to dismantling its police department“. This same City Council and many others across the nation including elected politicians are stating that police do not keep communities safe. As ridiculous as that may seem historical figures who have traditionally been highly respected are now being vilified as statues and monuments erected in their honor are destroyed under the umbrella of “righting past wrongs”.

    Insanity.

So – in the middle of 2020 the growing division in this country has reached a level that many suggest is the most divisive in US history – including the Civil War. Beyond the violence and tension across America, other potentially catastrophic issues such as $26 trillion in National Debt, a growing Cold War with China, millions unemployed, and…oh, let’s not forget….the second wave of a pandemic waits just around the corner.

    Fantastic.

America – A Bit of History

In the early 1900s, the American people had a feeling of optimism. People had a perspective that anything was possible and the American dream was real. Being self-made, and responsible for your own success was commonplace in people’s thinking. Certainly, everyone did not agree on all issues of the time. Regardless, Patriotism grew in the early 1900s as people felt the American Spirit and all things were possible.

Through two world wars, the American people supported the idea of freedom and fighting evil wherever it showed itself around the world. America served as a beacon of peace and freedom. Citizens from Socialist countries around the world sought the American Dream. They dreamed of freedom and all the opportunities America provides. They loved America and proudly waved the American flag.

The Greatest Generation existed in an era of success, innovation – as well as turmoil as they lived through the Great Depression. They had a tremendous work ethic and due to living through years of economic struggles appreciated what they had. Many of this generation lost loved ones and friends in World War II. They understood, appreciated, and respected sacrifice.

People like those of the Greatest Generation are what made America great. Now – compare them to those today who fret over social justice, climate change, and other “important” issues such as making certain that we use the correct pronoun when referring to someone. Today’s generation has their perspective on issues guided by thins such as feelings – and emotion. Facts and logic no longer are important to those who have a cause which they use to justify their own existence.

    The Decline of America

For more than 60 years America has been in decline and an effort has been underway to change the very fabric of this country. Political corruption and governmental policies have brought populations from rural America and concentrated them into cities. Illegal immigration to a large extent has continued to be allowed to occur and has vastly increased the numbers in the base of the Democratic Party. Why? Power. Even the great Conservative Ronald Reagan was fooled into supporting full amnesty for illegals back in the ’80s. Progressives for decades have written into law policies that have enslaved Black Americans and held them back economically as entitlements disincentivized them to explore their full potential. This was done under the guise of “helping” – and most were completely fooled.

The American people are not innocent in America’s decline. For more than 60 years the Constitution has been slowly shredded and government assumed power over much of our lives where the Constitution provides no authority. Those in government who made laws that expanded authority and grew government well beyond that which the Founders set forth were elected by the people. We are largely to blame.

Corporations and special interests have grown to own the vast majority of elected politicians. The Deep State is a significant power as it secretly influences government decisions and actions to obtain more and more power for those who already have it. Numerous policy changes over the last several decades have weakened the United States. Consider how as a country our level of self-sufficiency in regards to food production, technology, and medical supplies has been decreased to the point we rely on foreign countries for our continued way of life.

    Is There Hope?

Earlier in this article, I provide a mere glimpse of the tremendous accomplishments past generations have made in addition to adversity overcome. Historically I and many others have believed there is no challenge that we as a people cannot overcome. Consider September 12th, 2001. The day after and for many months UNITED WE STAND was the battle cry of the American people who came together in unity against terrorism and fear.

    It didn’t last.

Back in 1984, the American people backed Ronald Reagan for President and he won decisively. America’s Cold War against the Soviet Union was at the forefront of threats and the American people were largely unified behind the efforts to rid Communism from the world. The 80’s with Reagan as President was a time of great hope, prosperity – and Patriotism.

Below shows a state-by-state map of the 1984 Presidential Election Results.

    1984 Electoral College, map, Reagan

Fast forward to 2016 and the election of Donald Trump. One of the most divisive elections in US history. The results shocked the world. Businessman Donald J. Trump won the election against Hillary Clinton even though ALL polling data and the mainstream media had him losing handily. While Trump won the Electoral College and thus the election – he lost the popular vote. Looking at the map below showing how counties across America voted, it would appear the country was largely united behind Donald Trump – I would agree. The popular vote was lost due to the large cities and metropolitan areas where for decades governmental policies moved large populations into concentrated areas.  In many cases, an individual city may have more votes than the entire rest of the state.

    Is there hope?

Yes – but very little. The vast majority of politicians regardless of which side of the aisle they come from are corrupt. This has been proven over and over again for decades as good men(and women) are voted into office and they fail to follow through with the promises they made. While many will say that politics and preparedness have nothing to do with each other I believe facts tell quite a different story. When compiling a threat assessment as part of any preparedness system, one will find that the government at some point had a role to play in many of the listed threats.

So – here we are. We are in the middle of 2020 and living through endless headlines having us wonder what could possibly happen next. While I’m no prophet and predicting the future is certainly an effort in futility, I’ll provide a few thoughts:

    • Antifa and BLM will continue to promote violence and civil unrest in cities across the nation. Every new questionable police interaction will fuel the mob which will no doubt create more victims.  While similar events have occurred before and settled down quickly, this time will be different.
    • Politicians at all levels will take advantage of the discourse to further gain power, votes, and their agenda. Liberal leaders and celebrities will side with BLM and state while violence is not the solution they understand the frustrations and anger.
    • Cities with Liberal leaders will continue to allow destruction and anarchy pulling back law enforcement from holding those accountable for the destruction of public and private property and the violence many carry out.
    • Violence will continue in the cities with little threat to rural America. While there have been statements made to head out of the cities into neighborhoods by BLM and Antifa, it is unlikely this will be carried out in any significant numbers.
    • Trump supporters and “Patriots” who often quote the Constitution and enjoy their guns and Bibles will be called racists, White Nationalists, Fascists, and a threat to America by the mainstream media.
    • COVID-19 is not over and a 2nd Wave – regardless of the true risk and severity – will be major news out of the mainstream media, and Democrat Party. The Trump Administration will be blamed for ALL negativity reported.
    • The stock market will continue its roller coaster ride of high’s and low’s as the countries economic indicators are horrible at best.
    • The economy will keep moving forward for the time being. Some businesses affected by COVID will begin recovering and hiring people back. Other businesses will never reopen and will be gone for good.
    • Food supply streams will be inconsistent as a down growing season in 2019, and COVID-19 economic ramifications have a negative impact on the 2020 farmers’ ability to be profitable.
    • Gun sales will continue at a high pace with many first-time gun owners entering the market.
    • The Presidential Election of 2020: November of 2016 will look like an elementary school field trip in comparison. ‘Nuff said.

Is there hope? As stated – very little. The National Debt will continue to accelerate higher ever-increasing at faster and faster rates. I do not see a path which this is reversible. The division in this country may be irreparable. Possibly some event, some epiphany will bring people together to be unified. I see this as highly unlikely. Possibly the MSM will begin to report the news and investigate in an honorable fashion – with the TRUTH as the main objective. Highly unlikely. Is it possible that Christianity will see a mass resurgence and ethics, morals, and virtues will become mainstream once again. Don’t see it but we can certainly pray.

What can we really do? We can have as much influence as possible. We can spread the word of Freedom. We can educate others on the true history of this country rather than revisionist history being taught in schools today. We can vote for the best candidates from local elections all the way up to national with the HOPE that in some small way a difference will be made.

There are other actions we can take. Other actions we must take.

That will have to wait for Part 2.

  • Video: EMP Testing (Garbage Cans and EMP Bags)

Video: EMP Testing (Garbage Cans and EMP Bags)

[UPDATED FOR 2020] The threat of a solar flare or EMP has never been higher than today. History shows we are well overdue for a solar flare and with tensions flaring with China, North Korea, and Iran being more prepared for an EMP just makes sense.

Dr. Arthur Bradley walks through the testing of metal garbage cans and anti-static bags against an RF energy from an EMP. Recommendations include how to properly seal the cans and which bags offer the best protection. Using a more scientific approach than “stick a radio in the trash can and see if it loses signal”, this is some great information.

I would recommend watching the video at some point over on YouTube and read through the comments. Dr. Bradley responds to many comments and answers questions. Good additional information there.

If not aware – this is the very same Dr. Arthur Bradley who has authored numerous books including the widely popular The Survivalist series – one of my absolute favorites.

    Go get that trash can…..

  • REVIEW: Surviveware Small First Aid Kit

REVIEW: Surviveware Small First Aid Kit

    Who is Surviveware?

To understand why I am so impressed with this company it’s important to briefly summarize just who Surviveware.com is. A bit of their background:

Janco and Amanda, the founders of Surviveware, met while traveling the globe. Janco was a deckhand on a superyacht while Amanda was teaching English in France. They met in the little town of Toulon when Janco’s boat was in port. It was love at first sight and the rest is history. But their journey was not without its ups and downs. Building any relationship can be tough, even more so when you find yourself on opposite sides of the world.

    Surviveware's Founders

After thousands of miles traveled back and forth to visit each other in different countries they decided to settle in Amanda’s home state of Virginia to start their own company. They learned a lot from their adventures, especially that it pays to be prepared. There are very few people more accident-prone than Janco, so if he can’t help himself when another mishap strikes, Amanda is there with the right equipment to save the day.

Surviveware is where backpacking and camping meet preparedness! An accident happens in seconds when you least expect it. That’s why it is important to be informed, trained, and ready, long before disaster strikes. Surviveware products have been featured in the national media and our products are trusted by mountain climbers, sports coaches, travelers, EMTs, paramedics, and military personnel.

    Surviveware Small First Aid Kit

Not to make you wait until the end of this article to find out my thoughts I’ll go ahead and tell you I am immensely impressed with this first aid kit. I’ll get into the details below, however, the overall design, organization, contents, and price is exceptional.

Full Disclosure: After I purchased the Surviveware Small First Aid Kit I inquired about becoming an affiliate with the company. Any purchases made by readers – that’s YOU by the way – after following a link from here to their website will buy me a cup of coffee(OK, maybe just the cup). In no way, shape, or form does this influence my opinion or endorsement of any product or service. You’ve got my word on that. Affiliate sales help keep this site operational. ’nuff said.

Surviveware, first aid kit, small, preparedness, prepper, survival, SHTF

Above: Upon opening the box the kit was shipped in I found an EXTREMELY well packaged first aid kit. The kit arrived in a thick plastic protective bag as pictured above. This bag appears to be heavy plastic or clear vinyl and has a ziploc enclosure(see below) at the top.

This protective bag is perfect for protecting the kit from rain and other harsh environmental conditions. This is included with the kit and certainly not needed, however, it just showcases the steps Surviveware goes to as they provide exceptional products and value.

Above: The backside of the protective storage bag displays a list of contents. They are as follows:

    6” Shears(1), 600D Polyester Bag(1), Alcohol Wipes(3), Antiseptic Wipes(4), Adhesive Bandages: Butterfly Closures(5), Butterfly(5), H-Shape(5), Large(2), Standard(20), Mini(5), Square Shape(5), Cotton Gauze Swabs(3), Cotton Swabs(10), CPR Pouch with Instructions(1), CPR Breathing Mask(1), Crepe Bandage(1), Emergency Blanket(1), Eye Pads(2), Hypoallergenic Tape(1), Nitrile Gloves(1), Personal Medicine Laminate Bag(1), Personal Medicine Mini Bags(5), PBT Conforming Bandage(1), Safety Pins(4), Splinter Probes(2), Strip Wound Closures(3), Sting Relief Wipes(3), First Aid Guide(1), Triangular Bandage(1),Tweezer(1), Whistle(1)

    THE BAG

Below: Removed from the storage bag, I’m immediately impressed with the nicest bag I’ve ever seen for a first aid kit containing all the supplies. The bag is 600D polyester. If you are familiar with this material you will know it is frequently used in high-quality backpacks and tactical bags. In a word: RUGGED.

Above: Velcro Molle attachments allow the Surviveware Small First Aid Kit to be attached to a variety of objects including bikes, packs, vehicles, your belt – pretty much anywhere. Perfect for securing the pack on backpacking and hiking trips, or in a Jeep like in mine below:

Jeep, first aid kit, off road, survival, SHTF, Surviveware, prepper, preparedness

Below: Zippers are rugged and smooth. Compared to many small bags I’ve had these zippers are extremely durable and reliable. Very nice feature.

    INSIDE

Above:  Unzipping and opening the bag what I found had me smiling: EXTREME ORGANIZATION.

Everything is labeled in full-color text. There is no question where anything is or what is where – simply look and there it is. Fantastic! This is so beneficial it cannot be overstated. Imagine falling on your mountain bike and a buddy grabs the Surviveware Small First Aid Kit. They will be able to find what they are looking for with little difficulty. With most every other kit I’ve had of this size, opening the bag or box has everything pretty much in a jumbled mess and things can fall out all over the ground. Not with this kit.

Below:  I’ve got to point out the CPR Kit within the kit. Included are nitrile gloves and an antiseptic towel, which is nice. What is impressive are the CPR instructions sewn into the small case which provides the full correct instructions on performing CPR. Think about it – if CPR is needed the ability to remember the steps from training a year or more ago may prove difficult. Having these instructions laying on the ground near the patient could very well be a lifesaver. What a great feature!

Above: The metal shears included is another example of what sets this kit above others. First – they are included. Many smaller first aid kits do not include shears at all, however, they are very useful for removing clothing and cutting seat belts. They are a welcome and valuable addition.

Below: Located within the outside pocket is what you see below. A small plastic bag containing several smaller bags for personal medicines. Great to store some extra prescription meds, or whatever you may wish to keep on hand. This pocket also has plenty of room to put extra bandaids, packs of antibiotic ointments – whatever.

    SUMMARY

The Surviveware Small First AId Kit is by far my favorite first aid kit. It is sitting in my Jeep right now as I type this and I plan to order a couple more. Ultra high quality, durable, versatile, and compact. I struggle to find any criticisms or improvements that could be made. Again – I own several other packs of this size and it is by far the best. Having a tourniquet attached to the outside of the bag would be a recommendation.

At a price of $36.95 – an incredible value. I highly recommend purchasing a couple to be placed in your home, as well as each vehicle.

  • A Change in Attitude

    A Change in Attitude

Rourke: I published the following letter a few years ago and upon revisiting it felt it was very valid today. Enjoy!

We have lived in Alaska for coming on 8 years now and since coming here we have learned a lot about being prepared. We are survivors from hurricane Katrina and evacuated all the way up here to be with family that we hadn’t seen in years. After arriving we quickly learned that an Alaskan lifestyle is a different one. Let me explain. Things here in our fine state move slowly, the mail, stocks of ammo, and fruit comes in green to ripen at the grocery store. We were used to hot weather most of the year and having a garden almost year-round to experimenting with different tactics to grow anything here. So, prepping here is a tad different for us than our brothers and sisters in the lower 48. We have done a great job on building up a food pantry to not only stay off inflation but in case things get interrupted with the shipping, we have ample to survive awhile. Now, with that said, we face a dilemma most don’t and that is if and when the transportation to our state is interrupted at any point, things here will get dicey.

We have taken a page out of a lot of old-timers books that have lived here for years and paid attention to prices, sales and things like that to capitalize on building our inventory. Also, coming from a state that had hurricane prep as part of our schooling, we had those kinds of things taken care of, but here with the climate as it is, we were not prepared for the long winters. Sometimes it seems as winter flows right into summer and before you know it, its winter again? A different lifestyle for sure. Anyhow, we have learned that we must keep supplies in our vehicles and ensure we have things to stay warm should we break down somewhere. We also have taken an increased interest in firearms and other weapons that don’t require ammo. This is key, as the prices here are well… crazy. So, we have a backup of a backup just in case.

So, what change in attitude am I writing about? Not ours, but that of our friends and work associates. It’s amazing to talk with the same people now that a year or two ago thought we were out of our minds prepping. We now get phone calls on how to set up a pantry, or firearms to have. We are helping families here understand that prepping just makes good sense and will help you thru even in the toughest of times. Even my commie liberal friends are getting on the wagon. I find this very interesting.

I agree with the masses that I hope that nothing happens to our great country, but just paying attention and reading the news outlets of various places, you get the feeling that something is coming.

In closing, I want to plead with our fellow peppers to reach out to your neighbors and friends and do your best to get them to understand that our way of life is not fanatical but just makes good sense. You will find that now with things as they are, people are more apt to at least listen to you rather than just dismiss you altogether.

May God bless our country and your family.

    Steve Dearinger

  • A Message From Mark Goodwin of PrepperRecon.com

A Message From Mark Goodwin of PrepperRecon.com

I recently received the following email from Mark Goodwin which he sent out to many of his followers. I am reprinting it here with permission due to the concerns he expresses which are very much in line with my own, The economic impact that the response to this pandemic has generated cannot be overstated. Trillions of dollars added to the national debt, trillions of dollars in lost revenue by businesses both large and small – and a real unemployment rate hovering somewhere around 25%.  This country has been fundamentally changed in many ways.

The following comes from Mark Goodwin of PrepperRecon.com:

I hope you are well and doing what you can to stay safe. I’ve been staying busy through the lockdown. I’ve got the garden started, recently put in some more fruit trees, and of course, I’ve been hammering away at the keyboard to get out the next installment of The Beginning of Sorrows.

As promised, I’m going to address some emails I’ve received since the beginning of the COVID crisis about what to expect on the economic level.

To start, I’m going to answer a letter I got from a reader. As a disclaimer, I’m not offering financial advice but simply stating what I would do in a given situation.

    Ray writes,

What is your opinion on continuing to contribute to a 401k? I’m not cashing out but am not sure it makes sense to keep adding. I have a really good company match and some other prepper-minded people are saying now is the time to buy. But, I’m considering stopping or reducing my contribution and buying silver instead.

    Dear Ray,

If I were in your shoes, I’d probably contribute up to the match and not a penny more. You’re essentially loosing part of your paycheck if you don’t participate. But, I’d park everything in the lowest risk vehicle available through my 401k program. With a one-to-one employer match, the market has to lose 50% of its value before you lose the first dime.

    Thanks for writing!

In addition to my response to Ray, I’m going to expound a little bit on that and cover concerns from several other readers and podcast listeners.

The Fed has basically said they’ll do whatever is necessary to prop up the markets. With QE infinity, they could essentially purchase every available share of stock if they so choose. The total value of all 30 companies listed on the Dow Jones index comes to around $8 trillion.

Since March the government has pledged far beyond $6.5 trillion.

Congress has passed over $2.5 trillion in bailouts plus the Fed was at $4 trillion in COVID relief programs prior to Powell announcing on March 23rd  that they would do whatever was necessary, basically saying that they would print an unlimited amount of money to keep the economy moving at full steam ahead—right over the edge of the cliff.

Through open market activities, the Fed is restricted to purchasing treasuries and certain other debt instruments to keep the party going. They’re not allowed to buy stocks and bonds of publicly traded companies. Of course, they see that rule as more of a suggestion than a law.

They’ve set up what the government likes to call a special purpose vehicle which allows them to shuffle money to a non-Federal-Reserve entity, which allows them to purchase High-Yield ETFs, AKA Junk Bonds. If the Fed was a drug dealer we’d call that special purpose vehicle a shell corporation and people would go to prison for money laundering. And even though the Fed is not a government entity, they do enjoy all of the special privileges of being a member of the ruling class and are entitled to all the double standard benefits that the government receives.

So, the Fed is currently purchasing ETFs—only steps away from actually buying stocks. And as I’ve already stated, they could buy every share of stock on the Dow Jones index and it would still be in the ballpark of what they’ve already committed in terms of monetary creation for COVID relief.

This is why all of my fiction works either focus directly on the economy or at least brushes over the government’s vain attempts to breathe life into the corpse which was once the US dollar. If you think the scenarios in my books are hyperbole, they’re not. If anything, they fail to portray the level of ignorance and desperation of government officials and central bankers. It’s impossible to envision the recklessness, stupidity, and suicidal moves these people make when faced with anything other than perfect economic conditions.

Back to the $6.5 trillion plus in bailout money. All that free cash is going to need a home. A large portion of it will inevitably end up in the market. Then, we’ll probably see astronomical levels in the market indexes never before imagined…until it all collapses into a heap of ash and rubble, revealing the US dollar as the disaster it really is. So be prepared for the crackup boom. Does that mean you should attempt to ride the wave? If you do, you better have a strong stomach and impeccable timing. Anything less and you could lose it all.

When the crackup boom comes we’re going to see the kinds of hyperinflation that so many other countries have faced. Venezuela, Russia, Argentina, Zimbabwe, and the Weimar Republic all saw rising inflation which left working class people unable to purchase basic supplies necessary for survival. The Downfall of Money by Frederick Taylor is an in-depth look at hyperinflation in the Weimar Republic. It makes a great non-fiction primer for what’s coming to America. During that period, the annual rates of inflation for the Weimar Republic were as follows: 4% in June of 1922, 22% in September, 68% in December of 1922, 285% in March of 1923, 765% in June, 1,500,000% in September. By December of 1923, the annual inflation rate for the mark was 152 trillion percent. Those numbers are hard to grasp, especially in percentage terms. So let’s look at the gold price. In January of 1919 it took 170 marks to purchase an ounce of gold. In November of 1923 it took 87 trillion to purchase an ounce of gold. But don’t think of it in terms of gold. Think about that same rate of increase applied to groceries. If $170 dollars’ worth of groceries fill up a cart now, under that economic environment it would cost $87 trillion to fill up the same cart four years from now.

Of course, everyone would be trillionaires, thanks to constant money printing, assuming we can get the rest of the world to keep accepting the dollar. But when they won’t, it all comes crashing down and no one will sell anything for dollars.

Within weeks of the corona virus outbreak, we saw pictures of food banks all over America with cars stretched out for miles waiting for handouts. This shows us the state of preparedness in the US. Many of these cars were new, several were BMWs, Mercedes, and other luxury models. This is indicative of a nation full of people living beyond their means. They didn’t have enough savings to make it even one month without assistance.

The bailouts are helping these people in the short run, but only because of the false confidence still placed in the US dollar. Once the rest of the world refuses to take our funny money as payment for goods and services, bailouts will come to an abrupt end.

Whatever the expiration date on the dollar was prior to the COVID crisis, it’s now much closer. The people who live hand-to-mouth have been taught that the government will take care of them no matter what. So, most will change none of their current budgeting habits. When the dollar collapses, these same people will have nothing in their pantry, nothing in their refrigerator, and the Fed won’t be able to bail them out. Then, they’ll get desperate. Think about what you would do if your child was crying, begging you for food. And you’re a nice person. Now, think about what someone not quite as civilized as yourself might do if their kids were starving to death. My vision of the future isn’t a very rosy picture, is it? Trust me, it’s euphoric compared to what reality has in store.

Next is unemployment. The official number now stands at 14.7%. Of course, many people still haven’t been able to file due to overwhelmed state systems which are struggling to catch up. The president of the Minneapolis Fed, Neel Kashkari said the actual unemployment number is closer to 24%. To put those numbers into historical perspective, at the height of the 2008 crisis, unemployment was at 10%. In the great depression, it was 25%.

Of course if an official at the Fed is claiming unemployment is at 24%, we know it’s actually much worse. John Williams at Shaddowstats has the U3 unemployment number at 35.4%. The CBO expects the official unemployment rate to stay above 10% for the next year or two. We’re in for a long, painful period.

What can you do to prepare? Keep doing what you’re doing. Invest in self-sufficiency. Pay down debt. Build a cash reserve of 9 to 12 months’ worth of total expenses. Build up your pantry—all the stuff I talk about in the Seven Step Survival Plan.

If you’re considering investing in gold and silver to hedge against the coming inflation, make sure all your other bases are covered first. I think we’re in for a prolonged period of erratic instability. We could see periods of deep deflation as people scramble for cash to survive the immediate future before hyperinflation ultimately takes hold and collapses our economy. During that initial phase of deflation, we could see prices of hard assets like gold and real-estate take a beating. But in the end, they’ll be some of the only safe havens for protecting wealth long term.

On the constitutional front, freedom is hardly worth talking about anymore. We’ve seen far more egregious abuses of power as a result of COVID 19 than we ever saw from the 9/11 panic. In our modern age, we’ve seen a father arrested for playing ball with his daughter in New York, a newlywed couple who spent their honeymoon in jail because they had a home wedding, a beautician thrown in prison for cutting hair, all the while marijuana dispensaries and abortion clinics remained open as essential businesses. Only in America do murders and drug dealers get classified as essential workers while people go to jail for cutting hair, getting married, or playing ball with their child.

I often hear this fantasy that people believe the police and military are going to draw a line in the sand, that they’ll refuse to take unconstitutional orders. No doubt, many will indeed. I applaud the work of Oathkeepers, which reminds soldiers and law enforcement of their oath to uphold the US constitution. I think many men and women in those professions who are confronted with what that means will determine ahead of time not to go along with unjust and unlawful orders. However, I fear they will be in the minority.

During the COVID crisis, Andrew Cuomo issued an executive order for the National Guard to seize ventilators and protective gear from private hospitals, a blatant infraction against the 4th amendment. But, I heard of no mass refusals by the National Guard to carry out this terrible crime.

In Dare County, North Carolina, the Sheriff’s Department banned non-resident homeowners from accessing their own houses. The very people who pay these deputies salaries through property taxes were denied being able to go to their own homes. And once again, I heard nothing about any major protests by the deputies in that department. Neither did I hear about any law enforcement officers in Texas who refused to arrest Shelly Luther for cutting hair.

I know I have a lot of readers and listeners who are in law enforcement. I know it’s a tough line to toe and I appreciate your service. But, if you’re not already involved with Oathkeepers, I’d encourage you to take the time today to look into getting involved. If you’re already involved, start having some conversations with your co-workers in your department. Try to get them to take a look at Oathkeepers as well. I believe we are getting perilously close to the end of the American experiment and this country won’t survive in its intended form without your support.

Until next month, God bless and happy prepping!

    COVID-19: Interview with a Nurse

The last two months have been unprecedented. Many of us have been wearing masks and using copious amounts of hand sanitizer.  We’ve had many restaurants and bars close and forget about going to the gym. People have watched their 401k’s drop nearly 30% – or more. Kids have had to stay home from school and you can’t go to church – but, Walmart is fine. Everyone has been dealing with these issues and more – including nurses. Nurses have been dealing with all the same things as everyone else – with the additional responsibilities for people’s lives – and coming face to face with COVID-19 and the risks associated.

I was able to secure an interview with a local nurse whose name will remain confidential.  She will likely be reading the comments so feel free to express opinions and add questions.

    nurse interview, COVID-19, pandemic, preparedness

    On with the Interview:

Thank you for agreeing to do this interview and taking the time to answers a few questions.

There is a lot of attention on first responders, nurses, and doctors due to the ongoing pandemic. While the vast majority is very positive, there has been some criticism being directed at nurses. This criticism seems rooted in pictures floating around social media of nurses who appear to be “not so busy”, joking around, and not doing their jobs.

Have you seen stories related to this and what are your thoughts?

I have seen posts on social media of nurses floating by on stretchers to the theme song of the Titanic with captions that say how nurses aren’t being professional and they are not using their PPE properly or that they certainly aren’t busy. In regards to professionalism, I would have to somewhat agree as it may make people question the capabilities of those in the healthcare field when they are acting this way. On the other hand, I get that it’s a stress relief. We spend more time with our work families than our actual families at times and go through some traumatic situations that nobody else can understand so those we work with are truly a form of family and a team that will spring into action at a moment’s notice when necessary. The public has to understand that with this pandemic came major interruptions in our daily routines especially as it relates to surgical services. Fortunately, the hospital I work at decided to retain nurses and utilize them in other areas rather than laying them off.

What is the situation with PPE where you work?

The situation regarding Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) was very scary at the beginning of the pandemic. When we were told that we would have to reuse the PPE over and over again, this goes against every single thing we had learned in regards to going in and out of infectious rooms, so it was extremely upsetting. Masks that were once out in the open for use were no longer there and staff meetings focused around no hoarding or taking the PPE. Now that we are 6 weeks into our “no elective cases routine” the situation seems to be slightly better. Managers of departments have PPE under lock and key and hoard it like a mother protecting their young. So far we have not had to use an extreme amount even though we have had to do procedures on COVID-19 patients. We are also instructed to use our N-95 masks as a precaution during laparoscopic cases as the virus can be in the smoke that comes from the cautery equipment or in the gases used to inflate the abdomen.

As someone who is on the front-lines who may be exposed to the virus daily – what goes through your mind when you are getting ready for work?

It is scary going to work every day. Even though the operating room (OR) is only being used for emergencies the OR staff is being used for much more. I never know where I will be and I never know what I will be expected to do. My hospital decided to split the OR staff and put them on a 24/7 schedule. We no longer have to be on-call as there is a team that is always there which was a huge bonus to the staff who graciously agreed to rearrange their lives to accommodate this arrangement. This arrangement benefitted the staff as well as the hospital. The employees had less of a chance of being laid off and the hospital had extra staff to float to different areas. I personally have been in the emergency room screening patients and staff for COVID-19, I have cleaned lobbies, hallways, walls, locker rooms, and operating rooms, and most recently I have been sent to collect specimens from staff to test them for the virus. Some nights there was talk of going to other departments such as the ICU to help the nurses there, but fortunately, that has not been needed.

In preparation for the expected “surge” of patients, nurses were given training on ventilators and told that a team nursing approach would be taken. Me and another OR nurse were given a quick inservice on pumps, medications, and ventilators one night from an extremely intelligent ICU nurse, and as we left I remember thinking that I was a bit overwhelmed. I had experience in many departments but it had been 15 years ago and most of my experience was in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) so I thought I could be a could help in the event I was needed but hoping I would never be left alone to care for someone in the ICU. The nurse who was with me, however, was a 30 year OR nurse who had never worked on the floor before. People assume that just because you are a nurse you know everything about everything medical and that is just not true. There are so many specialties in nursing and for her to think about the possibility of having to care for a patient outside her skill set was more than overwhelming. Nurses value our licenses and profession and want to provide the best care possible and this put us in a situation where that might not be possible.

I’m seeing more stories on nurses getting laid off due to a lack of work, yet widespread cancellations of elective surgeries have occurred.  All over the news, the importance of nurses are in headlines, while, at the same time nurses are being sent home or laid off. What is going on?

Nurses are being laid off because of the lack of surgery cases. There are many nurses involved in the process of getting a patient on the surgery schedule. PreScreening takes place to make sure a patient is healthy enough to have an elective surgery. PreOp nurses get the patients ready on the day of surgery. OR nurses are there to take the patients back and be their advocate during surgery. PACU nurses take care of the patients after surgery and get them to a room if they are spending the night or to the Out-Patient Department to get ready to go home. Without these elective cases, the rooms in the hospital that are normally filled with surgical patients are no longer full. No total knee replacements, no hip replacement patients to take care of. This means empty floors, and nurses with nobody to take care of. Right now we are there to wait in the event we are needed and to not use sacred PPE in the event we have an influx of COVID-19 patients.

What are your thoughts on how the Trump administration has reacted to this situation?

I feel like they have done the best they can do during such an unprecedented situation. I feel like no matter what they do there will always be critics and cheerleaders. We won’t know what we should have or could have done until everything is all said and done. I know that for me personally, I do not want to have to rely on the government to take care of me and always have that in the back of my mind. Hospitals need to take responsibility as well and be prepared for such situations.

It is frustrating that organizations such as the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) now known as the Joint Commission would come into our hospitals mandating certain rules and regulations that are miraculously no longer necessary. For example, PPE being for single use only. If I were to take care of a COVID-19 patient and use my N-95 mask then go into another room to take care of another COVID-19 patient I would have been expected to change my mask, but all of a sudden it is now alright. This to me means one of two things, either it wasn’t necessary in the first place and they are making hospitals go through more PPE than needed because they are partnering with companies that make hospital supplies or they are knowingly putting healthcare providers at risk. Regardless of what the government does, hospital administrators need to assume some responsibility in making decisions and planning for the specifics in their own cities and towns.

From a preparedness perspective, what are your recommendations to readers for preparing for the next pandemic?

TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF BEFORE YOU GET SICK! I cannot express this enough! If you truly want to be prepared to take care of yourself and others there is no better prep than your health. Exercise, eat healthier, drink less alcohol, and certainly don’t smoke or vape. Exercise can just be going for a walk. JUST MOVE! Start somewhere and start now. Having comorbidities such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and diabetes can complicate any additional illness. Some are born with these comorbidities but staying healthy can increase your chances of a quicker recovery in the event of an additional illness such as the flu. Make a plan of what you will do in the event there is no pharmacy open.

Secondly, I would recommend starting with the beans, bullets, and bandaids mindset. Keeping these three categories in mind will help you get started and you can prepare from there. Reach out to like-minded individuals and discuss certain scenarios to plan for.

Last question. Why did you become a nurse?

I’ve always wanted to be a nurse. When I was little I was in the hospital a lot. The nurses were there for me when my mother couldn’t be. All my other classmates were always saying they were going to be teachers – I chose nursing. I wanted a career that the job itself was active, rather than sitting at a desk. There are also so many different experiences with nursing. I’ve worked as a school nurse, in the ER, in the operating room, as well as in the recovery.

Thank you so much for doing this and thank you for all that you do. Take care and be safe!

    line

There are so many perspectives when it comes to the COVID-19 pandemic. Facts, or what we believe to be facts seem to change and evolve daily. Misinformation – whether purposely or unintentional continues to occur. Conducting this interview provides some insight from someone with first-hand experience, rather than assumptions by some reporter or journalist.

Take care everyone and stay safe.

Supply Disruption and Upcoming Food Shortages

As if the health risk of COVID-19 virus and the economic calamity taking place in this country wasn’t enough, now, we have headlines across all media platforms stating we are at risk of coming food shortages. These food shortages are primarily from meat processing and packaging plants that are closing across the United States. These closures are due to virus outbreaks within the workforce of these facilities which threatens to contaminate the food supply. As of this writing, between 15-25% of pork production has been eliminated.

Smithfield Foods CEO Ken Sullivan said the following after closing the Sioux Falls plant indefinitely:

“The closure of this facility, combined with a growing list of other protein plants that have shuttered across our industry, is pushing our country perilously close to the edge in terms of our meat supply,” he said. “It is impossible to keep our grocery stores stocked if our plants are not running.”

John Tyson, Chairman of the Board of Tyson Foods, wrote the following in a letter published in the New York Times this past Sunday:

“As pork, beef and chicken plants are being forced to close, even for short periods of time, millions of pounds of meat will disappear from the supply chain. As a result, there will be limited supply of our products available in grocery stores until we are able to reopen our facilities that are currently closed.”

Millions of animals —chickens, pigs and cattle— will be depopulated because of the closure of our processing facilities,” Tyson writes. “The food supply chain is breaking.”

    What Do We Do Now?

There is no suggestion that food will be completely unavailable in grocery stores or mass starvations will occur. No – not even close. Will there be further repercussions in other areas of food supply chains? Unknown at this point. The appropriate response is to do what we do – stock up.

Purchasing, vacuum sealing, and storing as much meat as your freezer will hold will ensure the ability to grill up some burgers and throw down some protein in between supply chain interruptions. Putting back beans, rice, pasta, and canned goods just makes sense. I am in the middle of putting together an article on putting back a year’s supply of food while on a budget. Stay tuned.

Game Changer: Water Purification with the MSR SE-200 Community Chlorine Maker

Every so often a product comes out that revolutionizes a market or an industry. The MSR SE-200 Community Chlorine Maker is a game changer.

    Game Changer

    noun

an event, idea, or procedure that effects a significant shift in the current manner of doing or thinking about something.

There is little in the preparedness world more important than water and water purification/filtration.  Water is difficult to store in bulk, thus, collecting water from rain, rivers, ponds, lakes, streams, and puddles is frequently methods for longterm water provisions. Typically water filters such as the Berkey and bucket systems like the Sawyer Bucket Kit are used to make water safe to drink. These filter systems work great, however, they have limited life expectancies.

Game Changer:  The MSR SE-200 Community Chlorine Maker

The SE-200 is unique and incredibly useful in that it makes chlorine, which can be used to render suspect water safe to drink. This fantastic piece of equipment is being used in third world countries right now where people have no access to safe water. In five minutes, with just the push of a button, the device creates chlorine with water, salt, and electricity. Each batch produces enough chlorine to make 200 liters of water that’s safe to drink. A supply chain innovation, the chlorine maker lets users treat water on the spot at wells, lakes, rivers, and other common sources. Small, portable, and easily mastered, it requires only salt brine and electricity from a car battery or main power. Most importantly, it allows families to control their supply of safe drinking water.

From a preparedness perspective, long term treatment of water is critical to survivability. Period. Without the modern treatment of water, things can quickly devolve to an environment where water can cause serious illness. What kind of illness? Diarrhea, abdominal cramps, nausea, and vomiting. Sound like fun?

For less than the cost of a budget handgun, one of the most essential components of a preparedness system can be checked off the list.

Check out the MSR SE-200 Chlorine Maker.

  • Economic Collapse: Stock Market as an Indicator

Economic Collapse: Stock Market as an Indicator

The severity of the economic impact from the COVID-19 pandemic is just now being recognized – and in a historical timeline just getting started. So far there have been three Federal initiatives totaling well over $2.3 trillion dollars(eventually to total between $4-$6 trillion).

The National Debt now sits at $24.5 trillion dollars.

The reality of what is occurring and the long-range impact to the economy is catastrophic. Thousands of businesses have closed their doors, never to reopen. Thousands more are struggling and their fate remains questionable. Millions of American’s have lost their jobs and countless more will.

The Federal government’s response is anemic at best. The $1,200 stimulus check that many are receiving pales in comparison to their lost revenue. Federal unemployment dollars will certainly be a help but is a short term stopgap measure. The bottom line is there are massive layoffs, businesses closing, inflation has started and many of those businesses and jobs will not be coming back.

Far too many in the mainstream media and elsewhere are using the stock market as an indicator for economic health. This is an effort based on a falsehood – which is the value of the stock market itself. Don’t get me wrong the economy was doing much better thus the stock market deserved to be elevated, but not nearly to the level it was – or is.

    Stock Market/DOW Level

Look at the image at the top of this post. About one year ago the DOW was sitting at around 23,500. Today – the DOW sits at around 23,500. The market did rise at one point to over 29,000.

Should the market be at the level it is right now? The answer is simple: No.

Let’s compare December of 2018, to April of 2020:

    12/2018:  DOW – 23,500 estimated

    • US economy booming
    • Record low unemployment rates for all Americans including African-Americans, Hispanics, and women
    • Wages trending upward
    • Manufacturing sectors reporting growth and expansion
    • US/Mexico/Canada Trade Deal just signed in November
    • Largest tax overhaul in U.S. history implemented in 2018

    04/2020: DOW – 23,500 estimated

    • Trillions being added to National Debt(total amount unknown)
    • Worldwide pandemic causing sickness to over 2 million and 160,000 deaths
    • United States cases well over 700,000 with nearly 40,000 deaths
    • U.S. unemployment rate estimated to be between 13%-20%
    • Shelter-In-Place stays ordered across the nation
    • Tens of thousands of businesses closed
    • Many major food producers shutting down
    • Economic outlook in the United States, and the World = dismal

So much more could be added to the 04/2020 list but I believe the point has been made.  The stock market has already dropped from its high of over 29,000 and should be down closer to 14,000. The reality of current economic conditions is not reflected in the market – yet.

    What Are We To Expect?

Over the coming month’s we are going to hear a lot of positive things coming out of government. This has to happen to denote hope and quell panic. Consumer confidence is extremely low and is a contributing factor to any “recovery” that may occur. What might be considered a recovery is really a pause for what is to eventually arrive.

Am I right? Does this make sense? Is everything going to be fine and return to normal?

Hey – what do I know? I’m just an unemployed writer with a propensity towards reality.

    Take care all.

  • Review: Condor T&T EDC Pouch Kit [2020]

Review: Condor T&T EDC Pouch Kit [2020]

Something I have been slack in is my EDC. I have a few things in my Jeep but as far as an organized EDC kit that has been absent. I picked up a Condor T&T pouch a few months ago and finally got around to throwing some stuff in it. My intended purpose for the EDC kit is purely to organize a variety of items not commonly found in a vehicle but could prove very useful. The Condor T&T functions well in this regard as it has a variety of pockets and stretchy loops which to place things.Condor T&T, EDC, pouch, kit, EDC, review, survival, bug out

While the Condor can be thrown in a bug out bag or survival kit, mine rests in the back of the Jeep.

    Contents:

    Condor Materials & Construction

The construction of the Condor is excellent. The material is something similar to Cordura. Stitching is tight and all seams are double-stitched everywhere. The zipper appears to be oversized for the application which is just fine for me. Seems rugged enough to last years riding in my Jeep or inside a pack.

Condor T&T, review, EDC, prepper, SHTF

    Features

Size of the pack is 10″ x 7″ x 1.5″. While accurate the thickness of 1.5″ is when empty. Once loaded it expands out and mine is between 3″ and 4″ thick. Weight is just under one pound.

For organizing supplies, the pouch has one internal sleeve, one zipper pocket, and numerous elastic loops of different sizes on both halves. The elastic pockets are sized to hold things like AA batteries up to multi-tools. A lot of gear can be stored for easy access.

The Condor T&T can be mounted via 4 Molle straps or left independent. There are two D-rings on each top corner. These can be used to hang the pouch or attach it using a variety of means.

Condor, EDC, review, T&T pouch, survival kit,

    Versatile

Beyond survival & preparedness type items there are a lot of uses for the Condor pouch. Some examples include organizing charging cables, battery packs, and chargers. The T&T pouch can make a great first aid kit. The pouch can also be used to hold small tools for electronics or bike repairs. The sky’s the limit!!!

    Summary

At around $25 the Condor T&T pouch is well worth it. Its build quality is excellent and its versatility lends itself to many roles. I can see owning 3-4 of these and use them for things like tools, electronics, and first aid.

    RECOMMENDED.

  • DIY Simple Alternative to Lysol Disinfectant Spray

DIY Simple Alternative to Lysol Disinfectant Spray

DIY, homemade, disinfectant, spray, lysol, alternative, virus

Kill germs with this easy to make and affordable DIY disinfectant spray. With Lysol more difficult to find than Waldo, this homemade disinfecting spray is one solution to clean and disinfectant your home which is so important right now.

    Why a Disinfectant Spray?

Probably in no time in history are people more aware of germs and the need to disinfect. The vast majority of us are very conscious of what we are touching, who we come across, and the need to not bring invisible “friends” home with us. Even with the most strict protocols used it is still possible to crosscontaminate germs picked up from point A and transport them to point B. While I have joked many times that I have a strong immune system due to NOT washing hands as often as I should and swimming in less-than-clean rivers, I’m making serious efforts to keep my place as germ-free as possible.

    Enter: DIY Disinfectant Spray

    Uses

Disinfection of all kinds of items can be done with this spray. Examples include toys, doorknobs, cabinet and drawer handles, couches and recliners, steering wheels, car seats, sink knobs, light switches, doorway entrance, etc.

This spray can also be used to disinfect hands. A few sprays to wet the hands thoroughly and then spread the mixture rubbing hands together while it evaporates very similar to using hand sanitizer.

    Recipe

This is very simple to make. It is important that the amount of alcohol in the recipe be above 60% in order to effectively kill germs.

    Materials Needed:

180 Proof Everclear Grain Alcohol(95% alcohol)

    Water – distilled or boiled

Essential Oil of your choice for scent(optional)

    Spray Bottle

Everclear, alcohol, disinfectant, virus, homemade, DIY

    Instructions:

These instructions are for 8 ounces of 70%+ alcohol spray sanitizer. Adjust recipe as needed based on the size of your spray bottle.

    1. Pour 3/4 cup of 180 proof Everclear in measuring cup.
    2. Pour Everclear into spray bottle being careful not to spill.
    3. Pour 1/4 cup water into measuring cup.
    4. Add water to spray bottle.
    5. Add essential oils to bottle for frangrance.
    6. Shake to mix contents.

I found that with the peppermint essential oils I tried only 6 drops in about 15 ounces provided enough scent, but, you’ll have to see for yourself. Lavender is a good essential oil to use as well as peppermint.

    Notes:

    • Store in an airtight container otherwise the alcohol will evaporate and the efficacy could be reduced.
    • Do not use vodka as the percentage of alcohol is too low.
    • High percentile rubbing alcohol can be used, however, at the time of this writing, it is not available in most locations.
    • DO NOT USE NEAR A FLAME!!! VERY FLAMMABLE!!

    Stay safe everyone!!

  • UPDATE: Coronavirus and the Economy

    UPDATE: Coronavirus and the Economy

Coronavirus Update: I’m in Georgia which is under a shelter in place order. So far it appears to me that people are limiting their travel but not eliminating it. I’ve been wearing N95’s and using tons of hand sanitizer. Most local businesses are closed with employees laid off. Service businesses – if they are open at all – are now curb-side-only. The majority of those businesses have let people go as they just don’t need the staffing. Word from people I know in a variety of industries shows massive projected drops in forecasted business(DUH!!) and even more layoffs than that which has already occurred.

I can’t help but question a lot of what has happened and what is happening regarding the virus. I’m not big on conspiracy’s, however, many things that just a few years ago I considered a “conspiracy” I can see as fact – or close to fact – today.

    A few thoughts:

    • The Coronavirus Task Force continued to promote “15 Days to Stop the Spread” even well after it became obvious that 15 days was not going to be nearly enough.
    • Trump promoted that he could see the country start getting back to normal around Easter. He continued to talk this timeline even when it was obvious that the vast majority of the country would not be in the peak of the virus by that point.
    • Trump began to suggest that the Easter timeline was hopeful but the priority would be the health and welfare of the country. Basically – the country would not be opened up until it was safe to do so.
    • The Coronavirus Task Force extended the original “15 Days” to an additional 30 Days to Stop the Spread.
    • For weeks the CDC and Task Force stated there was no need for civilians to wear respirators or masks. This went against all commonsense to the vast majority of anyone who understands how the virus can spread. The CDC has now reversed this decision stating that it can be beneficial to use some type of garment or material to cover the mouth and nose.
    • Many states have issued Shelter in Place orders with varying degrees of the timeframe for the order to remain. In my state of Georgia, the order is said to go through April 13th. This makes no sense at all as the projected peak of the virus is to be somewhere around April 23rd.
    • Medical experts on the Coronavirus Task Force has continued to question and downplay the effectiveness of the hydroxychloroquine cocktail treatment which has shown tremendous promise with many patients that were nearly dead.
    • The Canadian Government has stated that the lockdown in that country will continue possibly until July. In the United States, we are looking at the end of April for the 30 Days to Stop the Spread to end. There is a significant timeframe difference here when geographically the two countries are literally side by side.
    • The Federal Government finally passed a nearly 3 trillion-dollar stimulus package which will be used to help citizens and businesses negatively affected by the shutdown. Many of use will be out of work for months. $1,200?
    • The Task Force is predicting between 100,000 – 200,000 Americans will die during this outbreak.
    • As of April 4th, 2020: United States cases – 308,312 / total deaths – 8,733

We keep hearing that it is important to get to the “peak” of this pandemic as once it arrives things will improve after that. Let me explain something. If the peak of the virus arrives April 24th, with roughly 4,200 people succumbing to the virus per day(just an estimate), there will be weeks that follow that will require sheltering in place in order to prevent the virus from making a comeback. During these weeks people will continue to get sick, require medical care – and yes, some will die in hopefully decreasing numbers(4200, 4000, 3800, 3500…..and so on).  This is the reason why the Canadian government is looking at the possibility that measures to control the spread of the virus will remain in place all the way into July.

For most of us, the real danger from this virus is NOT the virus itself but rather the economic damage affecting millions of households and businesses across the nation. Consider the fact we are are still early in this crisis and we are likely looking at a minimum of weeks to possibly another couple of months of severely reduced economic viability and massive unemployment. The long term impact on the economy and this country is going to be devastating. Whether it takes months or years the end game is drawing closer. The risk of economic collapse is certain. There is simply no way our financial system can bare the weight of trillions of dollars added to the national debt and the continued deficits to come.

What this means folks is once this pandemic is over…..it’s not over.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on the matter in the comments below.

Take care folks and stay safe!

List of Commonly Available Heirloom Seeds – SAVE MONEY!!

survival garden, SHTF, garden, heirloom seeds, list, common, prepper, preparedness

I’ve shared this list of commonly available heirloom seeds in the past as so frequently companies repackage common seeds as “heirloom” and double the price. Heirloom seeds are attractive to many gardeners due to their non-GMO and non-hybrid status and the ability to harvest seeds for future planting.

The reality is that many seeds commonly sold at Wal-Mart, Home Depot, Lowe’s, and similar businesses are in fact heirloom and very inexpensive. The very same seed variety packaged as “heirloom” in a colorful mylar bag will sell for 2-4X what the “budget” seed pack will sell for.

    From Burpee.com

Heirloom varieties are open-pollinated–meaning that unlike hybrids, seeds you collect from one year will produce plants with most of the characteristics of the parent plant. And that’s key to their survival.

Many heirloom varieties were preserved by home gardeners who saved seed from their family gardens from year to year. Other seeds traveled around the world in the pockets or letters of immigrants, which is why, though the tomato evolved in Central America, we have varieties from Russia, Italy, Japan, France, Germany and Kentucky.”

  • AVAILABLE NOW: Sawyer Mini Water Filter Bucket Kit

AVAILABLE NOW: Sawyer Mini Water Filter Bucket Kit

I have in stock a large supply of Sawyer Mini Water Filter Bucket Kits and they are ready to ship. If you are not familiar with this kit, it allows the popular Sawyer Mini Water Filter to be adapted for bucket use. The advantage of using this kit with the Sawyer is providing large volumes of filter, clean water for multiple people.

See below for more information on this simple and inexpensive accessory for the Sawyer Water Filter.

    line

I appreciate the interest that has been shown regarding the Sawyer Mini Water Filter Bucket Kit. I have enjoyed using the Sawyer Mini Water Filter. It is simple to operate, reliable, and inexpensive. The biggest drawback of the Sawyer is using it with multiple people. It can be done but you’re either all sucking on the same straw or using a lot of time and energy filling small bags or bottles with dirty water and squeezing through the filter. I figured there had to be a better way to use this great filter.

Enter: the Sawyer Mini Water Filter Bucket Kit.

This simple kit adapts the Sawyer for bucket use. Once a hole is drilled in the supply bucket the components are assembled(instructions included) – and then the Sawyer is attached. That’s it.

Currently, the needed drill bit is not included as I didn’t want to add the expense for something that people may have already. Regardless – any local Harbor Freight, Home Depot or Lowe’s carries the bit and of course Amazon.

Actual Trial With the Sawyer Bucket Kit.

#1: Started with a bucket and threw in a bunch of dirt and added a couple gallons of water.

    20160515_162845

#2: Used a towel as a pre-filter to remove the larger particles.

    20160515_163134

#3: Towel caught the larger sediment/contaminants. A finer pre-filter for capturing more of the larger particles would be suggested(coffee filters good for this).

    20160515_163415

#4: Below the contaminated water ready to go through the Sawyer.

    20160515_163502

    #5: Filtering operation in progress.

    20160515_163612

#6: Close up of the stream of filtered water exiting the filter.

    20160515_171410

#7:  This is what the non-filtered water looked like pre-filtering.

    20160515_163823

#8: Filtered water is crystal clear after using the Sawyer Mini Water Filter Bucket Kit.

    20160515_170526

The results are impressive. It is not surprising the water looked crystal clear after all that is what is supposed to happen. Flow rate was excellent at around 5-6 gallons an hour.

I drank the entire glass of filtered water and found it had no off-taste and tasted like….well…..clean water. While this test was dealing with only sediment and suspended particles in water, the Sawyer also excels at removing pathogens and bacteria.

Currently, the kit is priced at $9.99 with free shipping which is a bargain. Add the Sawyer Mini Water Filter for around $20 and a high volume water filtration system can be put together for around $30. Not bad.

You can visit the bucket kit product page HERE to order or simply click on this THIS LINK which will take allow ordering right now.

I would appreciate it if you would share this on social media. Kits are ready to ship now.

    Thanks

  • COVID-19: When It’s All Over, Whats Next?

COVID-19: When It’s All Over, Whats Next?

First off I want to say thank you for the incredible response to my post a few days ago – “From the Desk of John Rourke“.  I really appreciate it. Back to today’s post…….

So – the cases of COVID-19 are spiking and the United States sits in 3rd place for total in the world. This is not unexpected as testing has increased, thus, the number of reported cases should be going up. Luckily – thus far – the percentage of deaths compared to total cases remains fairly low(at least by Italy standards). New York is the epicenter with almost half the nation’s total cases.

The stock market has dropped nearly 30%, and rebounded back up around 8%. I suspect it will skyrocket once the stimulus package is fully passed – adding trillions of dollars to the Federal debt in the process.

COVID-19 map, virus map, preparedness, survival, prepper

Businesses all over the country are shut down and millions are out of a job. Grocery store shelves are empty of rice, beans, meat, and other essentials. Gun sales have skyrocketed and ammunition is flying off the shelves. Police departments across the country are refusing to enforce or investigate non-violent crimes. Some cities are releasing inmates to decrease the possibility of infection through the jail population. People are walking around in public with N95 masks on and hand sanitizer is the most popular perfume and cologne ever made.

    It’s a $%&#storm for sure.

The nation will recover(to what extent is up for the debate). The economic impact of the COVID-19 virus will be longlasting and severe(for how long and to what extent is also up for debate).

When it’s all over – what then?

If this event does not wake people up to preparing for uncertain times nothing will. For those of a preparedness mindset, we should all learn from this experience what holes we have in our systems and provide perspective on what is truly needed. When things get “back to normal” – or at least to the new normal – what are YOU going to do differently to be better prepared for the next event?

Hey – it is still early in this situation and there are far too many variables involved to accurately predict exactly what will happen over the next 6 -12 months and beyond. I have my concerns. What I know is based on the assumption that we get back to some sense of normalcy I plan to do the following:

    • Be completely debt free. Being that I just became unemployed I recognize that having very little debt would be of great benefit.
    • Live in the country away from people. This has been a goal for quite some time and I will accomplish this ASAP. There are so many advantages to being “in the sticks”. No doubt there will be neighbors and a community that I’ll actively engage. Networking is important.
    • Food. Food storage is so important and must be a priority. While I have been sitting in a decent position it is not nearly enough. This will be rectified once employment is gained.
    • Medical. While difficult I would very much like to expand my medical preparedness to include some prescription meds that could be very handy in a variety of situations. It can be done.
    • Emergency Savings. Building an emergency savings to deal with unexpected events is a must.
    • Just enjoy life. Over the past year, I have been unbelievably busy. Life is too short. Going kayaking, fishing, looking at the night sky and all those stars, firepits, whooping my kids’ ass in basketball, and having a glass of whiskey with friends are just a few experiences that I need more of.

Those are a few of my thoughts for now, and no doubt the list will change over time as things change.

How about you? Leave your thoughts in the comments below.

    Stay safe.

  • New To Prepping? 12 Tips To Get You Started

New To Prepping? 12 Tips To Get You Started

Coronavirus, preparedness, new, getting started, tips, prepper, SHTF,

There are many people just now getting started into preparedness due to the COVID-19 virus outbreak. While a bit late to the party – it is not too late. Getting started in prepping can be a daunting task and one can easily get overwhelmed. With the headlines of today, it is easy to feel a huge sense of urgency to get ready NOW – with many giving up because they just don’t have the money or the time to invest. Giving up or being a victim of normalcy bias could mean the difference between having taken the necessary steps to prepare – or not.

One point that needs to be made is that everything does NOT have to be done at once. While I would not suggest any further hesitation, baby steps will get you in a much better position than not starting at all.

    12 PREPAREDNESS TIPS

    1. Store What You Eat – It is not necessary to purchase a year’s supply of food all at once, nor is it required to buy expensive freeze-dried products(most are sold out anyway). When doing regular grocery shopping throw in a few more cans of beef stew, corn, and a couple of bags of rice. While recently rice has been sold out in many areas inventory is improving in most stores. Build the pantry with every trip and over time.  You do not have to physically go in the store. Ordering online via Amazon, or your local Walmart or other grocery stores will reduce exposure to other people.

food storage, preparedness, prepper, SHTF, coronavirus

    2. Store Extra Water & Get a Water Filter – Water is fairly cheap with a case of pure bottled water running under $3.00 for 24 bottles. Stacking 10 in the corner of the garage or spare bedroom is a great start. Gallon jugs of water are even cheaper usually tunning under $1.00. Soft drink bottles can be washed out and refilled with water from the tap. For most who throw these bottles away, this is an ultra-low budget water storage method.

A good water filter will be extremely useful should water stop flowing from the faucet. A couple of Sawyer Mini Water Filters will filter thousands of gallons of water. Add a Sawyer Water Filter Bucket Kit and filter water for the entire family.

    3. Have a Plan to Relocate – If, for whatever reason, the need to relocate or “bug out” occurs there needs to be a place to go. Possibly a friend or relative across town or across the state could be a planned location to go. Part of the planning includes what will be taken with you, who must be notified, what route will be taken, and what you will do with pets.

It may be as simple as going to Aunt Besty’s out in the country 30 minutes down the road – or traveling to the State Park located a couple towns over. Regardless, have a plan of action.

Oh – and make sure everyone in the family knows this plan in case communications are down and not everyone can get home. A secondary meet up point is also a good idea.

    4. Just Getting Started is Important – You don’t have to prepare for the complete breakdown of society all at once. With this in mind work to cover the basics of preparedness – food, water, medical, security, shelter. Every can of soup is a step in the right direction! Congrats!!

    5. Don’t Focus on One Area of Prepping – In planning your preparedness effort, do not focus on one aspect of preparedness. Do not say, “Well, I’ll get my food stocked up and then go to water.”  Efforts should be spread across the spectrum of preparedness – food, water, medical, security, communications – and planning. Tunnelvision is a common practice to new preppers and all areas should be worked on over time so your preparedness system remains balanced.

    6. You Do Not Have To Spend a Fortune – Most of the basic supplies needed to be put back can be purchased at the grocery store, dollar store, and discount stores such as Wal-Mart. Don’t forget Amazon. Think about what would be needed for going camping. A massive solar system costing $10,000 is not needed(but would be nice!).

    7. Educate Yourself  – A boatload of preparedness information is available on the Internet.  Read articles, watch YouTube video’s, and most importantly use some common sense when getting this information. Fear-mongering is everywhere. We have a rather large free preparedness download page right here on 1776PatriotUSA.com. Check it out here and share it with friends and family.

    8. Keep Your Car at Least Half Full and a Full Gas Can At Home – Gas lines and shortages don’t bode well for an expedient departure when your car is running on empty. Keep your vehicles at least half full and have a reserve.

    9. Put Together a Bug Out Bag/Kit – Using the camping analogy again review needed supplies once the bug out location is reached. Typically using a backpack is recommended however I prefer a rugged tote box for storing supplies. This tote could be kept in a car trunk/SUV – or in the home. Point being a kit needs to be put together so that if needed it can be “grab and go” scenario.

bug out bag, survival, prepper, preparedness

    10. Prepare Yourself….Mentally – No doubt you’ve thought of a variety of situations that may occur. Now is the time to visualize them over and over in your mind. The purpose of this is to prepare mentally for what might happen BEFORE it actually occurs.  Should some unfortunate event take place you will be more mentally prepared due to the visualization exercises conducted.

    11. Purchase a Firearm If You Do Not Own One – There are a variety of situations where the need for firearms could come into play. Civil unrest, rioting, crime waves, etc. can cause innocent citizens to become violent crime victims. Even the playing field by having a firearm.

If you read this and go out and buy a gun make absolutely certain you also purchase training. The mere ownership of a firearm does not constitute the ability to use it and defend yourself.

    12. Alternate Forms of Cooking – If the grid goes down preparing meals will still need to take place. While most of us have gas or charcoal grills at home how much fuel is available? How about a firepit along with enough wood to last? A propane camp grill with a dozen or so canisters is a good start. Extra propane tanks for your gas grill are fairly cheap. Charcoal? Stock up on sale and keep it dry.

    line

Although those discovering preparedness at this point in time may be a bit late to the game – there is no better time than NOW to start – so get to it. Don’t go overboard and run up credit card debt. One step at a time will get you to your destination.

  • Economy Crashing – What Do We Do Now?

Economy Crashing – What Do We Do Now?

We are in unprecedented territory. America is under siege by an invisible enemy and the seemingly required actions by Federal and State governments have opened a Pandora box the likes of which we have never seen before. Millions of American’s are fearful of the future as their employment falls into question. How will I pay my bills? How will I pay my rent/mortgage? How will I care for my family? What is going to happen?

This hits home as I lost my job this week like many others and now looking for employment in an environment where hiring is highly unlikely.

From all indications, the Federal government is going to take drastic actions to provide help to the populace.  Right now there is a massive $1.3 trillion dollar stimulus getting ready to be implemented. These funds are to go to Americans via two checks(April 6th and May 18th), and struggling businesses – including the airline industry – greatly effected by the economic slowdown.

    What do we do now?

If you are in a higher-risk health category the focus must be to not attain the virus at all. Quarantining by limiting exposure to people and the virus itself must be a priority.

Those at less risk, while still trying to avoid the virus, should focus on the economic challenges ahead. A strategic approach to making certain that basics such as food, water, medical, security, communication, and planning are taken care of.

    In a word: Prepare.

    Food

While food storage should have already been a priority for readers here, if stocks are not sufficient NOW is the time to make improvements. With income being diminished for so many the following is a list of foods with higher calorie content and lower prices:

    • Rice – this is becoming more difficult to find at the moment, however, stores will be resupplied. Likely there will be limits on quantities to purchase. Rice is simple to prepare, keeps well and can be combined with many other foods and seasonings.
    • Bread(flour)- Many stores have been selling out of bread. Make your own!! Simple to do and very inexpensive with as low as 4 ingredients(flour, salt, yeast, water).
    • Pasta – Typically can be found on sale and keeps well. Don’t forget pasta sauce.
    • Peanut Butter – Dense calories and great taste. Store brands are cheap.
    • Canned Meat – Tuna, canned chicken, and SPAM are still available in most stores. While not the cheapest food they can be used to form meals and provide protein.
    • Frozen Meals – There are meals available as low as $1.00 and with sufficient freezer space load up.
    • Frozen Meat – If fresh is sold out there are usually boxes of frozen steak, hamburgers, and chicken available.

    Water

Water is incredibly important for not only sustainment of life but for cooking and sanitation.

    • Water is difficult to store as it is heavy and takes up a lot of space. Purchase gallon jugs of purified or spring water rather than bottled. Bottled water is very expensive compared to jugs.
    • Build your own water filter system. There are lots of videos on YouTube on how to do this, however, many of the components are sold out or prices have skyrocketed. One option is the Sawyer Mini Water Filter Bucket Kit available from me. This kit allows a simple Sawyer Mini Water Filter(about $20) to be hooked up to a bucket so high volumes of water can be filtered. I normally sell this kit for $10.99 on eBay, however, I still have them for $9.99 with Free Shipping for readers of 1776PatriotUSA. Click HERE to check it out. Click HERE for the Sawyer Mini Water Filter.   I highly suggest that you have at least TWO filter systems available. I currently have
    • If you have a pool or rain barrels make certain they are full.
    • Purchase Clorox bleach to be used to disinfect water.

water, filter, Sawyer, bucket kit, SHTF, prepper, preparedness, survival

    Medical

    • Stock up on current medications. Many insurance companies will allow you to get a prescription filled 5 days early.
    • Make sure a good first aid kit is available as well as compression bandages.
    • Wear prescription glasses? Make sure you have at least one spare pair.
    • Have a variety of pain killers, anti-inflammatories, anti-diarrheal, and Severe Cough-Flu concoctions.
    • If you lose your job or have no insurance check out GoodRX for discounts at pharmacies. Yes – it actually works in many cases.

    Security

There are many cities across the country releasing criminals from their jails to reduce the possibility of spreading within the jail population. While this INSANITY going on this cannot end with positive results. Unemployment is going to skyrocket and many will become desperate. Crime is very likely to increase.

    • At a minimum have a pistol or shotgun available for each adult in the household.
    • MAKE SURE THOSE THAT HAVE ACCESS TO FIREARMS KNOW HOW TO USE THEM. The last thing anyone needs is to be shot in the ass by their cousin while trying to avoid the virus. Range time!!!
    • Ammunition is in short supply for most common pistol calibers, thus, a shotgun is a good option. Regardless, a few boxes of ammunition for each firearm is a minimum.

    Communication

With everything going on there are a couple positives: The power is on and does not seem to be at risk anytime soon and communication is still fully available. While a lesser priority there are a few steps to take just n case:

    • Basic FRS/GMRS handheld radios should be put back along with extra batteries. These are extremely handy should the grid go down and can be fun and entertaining for little ones as well.
    • Have a written list of names, phone numbers, addresses, and email addresses for friends and family just in case regular communication such a cell phones get interrupted.
    • Keep a couple of soup cans and some string. You never know.

SHTF, radio, FRS, GMRS, communications, prepper, preparedness

    Planning

Everyone’s situation is different as far as geography, population density, housing, etc. Consider all aspects of your situation and think of what could happen if the power goes out, there was a large increase in crime, civil unrest, or if you needed to relocate. The more you think now and literally make a list the better you will be able to think and react later.

    survival planning, checklist

    FINAL THOUGHTS

The Trump Administration is pulling out all the stops to try to save the economy. Most people simply do not realize the impact this event is having on the economy – short and long term. Those who have been in the preparedness game for the past few decades have contemplated what an economic collapse would look like and how it would start. What is happening right now could easily be looked at as the catalyst that ends up creating a storm the likes of which this country has never seen. Hopefully not.

What do YOU think? What are you doing to deal with not only what is happening now but to also prepare for what lies ahead? Any advice or insight you wish to share?  Please comment below.

    Take care all.

  • The Economic Threat from COVID-19 Virus

The Economic Threat from COVID-19 Virus

coronavirus, COVID-19, economic collapse, Wall Street, SHTF

COVID-19 coronavirus continues to threaten the lives of millions of people around the world. Cases in the United States are soaring.  Schools of all kinds including universities are suspending classes and closing. The NBA has ended its season and there will be no March Madness. Stock markets are more volatile than Joe Biden’s brain cells. Hand sanitizer and Lysol are nowhere to be found and toilet paper(for whatever reason) is hotter than Jennifer Lopez on a Miami beach.

    Now what?

Utilizing facts, logic, and commonsense is always a good approach to most situations. While the Coronavirus represents a serious health concern for millions of Americans, the mainstream media is promoting panic with reporting that contains suspect and counter-productive information. Why would this be happening? More on that shortly.

    Update as of March 15th:

    • There are over 2800 confirmed cases in the US with 57 deaths.
    • There are countless thousands of non-confirmed cases that have already occurred.
    • There will be countless thousands that will be confirmed over the coming weeks.
    • The vast majority of those infected respond to treatment and recover completely – over 98%.
    • Those dying after infection are generally older and have a preexisting secondary health issue.
    • There is currently a run on bottled water, canned goods, bread, toilet paper, medical supplies, and numerous other items across the country.
    • N95 and similar respirator masks are sold out and back-ordered for weeks.
    • The cruise and airline industries are getting hammered financially as people stop utilizing their services.
    • Schools and universities across the country are closing.
    • The stock market has dropped 21% off it’s high of over 29,000 reached back in February.
    • Confirmation test kits for COVID-19 are slow to reach doctors’ offices and hospitals.
    • Hospitals across the country are getting ready for an onslaught of Coronavirus cases and are concerned they will not have enough resources.
    • President Trump declares a National Emergency. In doing so he frees billions of dollars to be used to fight the outbreak. He also signed executive actions to provide benefits such as extensive Coronavirus testing, student loan relief, and financial aid for sick workers.
    • President Trump has banned all travel to and from Europe including the UK to reduce the chance of spread.
    • President Trump has indicated that he is considering a domestic travel ban within the United States.
    • Dr. Anthony Fauci, NIAID Director, stated on CNN the morning of March 15th that it’s possible that hundreds of thousands of Americans may die due to COVID-19. He stated that this was avoidable if we continue to do the right things. He also inferred that “national lockdown” may be required to curtail the spread of the virus.
    • The news media and many Liberal politicians continue to be irresponsible in their reporting. Their fear-mongering spin is causing widespread panic as citizens wonder about the spread, treatment, risk, and cure.
    • Numerous conspiratorial theories and false information are spreading across social media platforms causing tremendous misinformation.

The true facts related to COVID-19 show that the vast majority of Americans are not at any significant risk beyond that of the normal Influenza flu. There are more significant risks for certain segments of the population as already noted. With this understanding, the response throughout the United States of closing schools, ending sports seasons, canceling widely attended events, limiting travel, and creating economic turmoil is simply not justified nor warranted.

    [slideshow_deploy id=’11252′]

    Why is this happening?

Theories are plentiful. Beyond the Chinese governmental genetically modified bat-soup goobly-goop, many believe that the true epidemic at hand is the mainstream media and Progressive Elite. The overreaction and misinformation campaign led the liberal media aims to bring down President Trump by causing economic turmoil and convincing the American people that a new savior is needed. If the Left can reverse the economic boom that the Trump administration’s policies have provided, the next Democratic candidate has a chance to win in November. Political conspiracy? Has the Left showed the will go to any extent to get Trump out of office?

This is but one theory and one that I lean towards. Regardless of the reason, we have to deal with the fact it’s happening. Let me say that one more time:

What will be the repercussions of COVID-19?

The virus itself will make thousands – maybe millions of people sick. The vast majority will recover completely. The virus itself will take the lives of many. How many? “Too many” is the answer. It is pointless to predict numbers at this point as there are far too many variables at hand to accurately calculate.

Beyond the health issues directly related to COVID-19, the economic impact is likely to cost over $2 trillion in lost revenue worldwide. I believe this is well understated and the cost to the United States alone will approach $1 trillion or some obscene similar amount.

In these early stages of this pandemic, the economy of the United States has already been greatly effected. Beyond the declining stock market, tens of thousands of businesses across the country in a wide array of industries are seeing a dramatic drop in business. Hundreds of thousands of students across the country are being forced to stay home from school and therefore parents are having to make a decision between a paycheck or caring for their children. As the populace restricts their day to day activities in an effort to reduce their possible exposure to COVID-19, small shops and stores, in particular, are struggling to stay afloat.

The domino effect of reduced commerce is costing billions of dollars within the domestic economy. This is just getting underway and will continue as people lose jobs, incomes drop, industries are decimated, and the virus spreads into every community and the statistics pile up. Where will it end and how far will it go? Too early to tell.

The media will continue to dedicate an unjustified amount of time to this virus, all the while the regular Influenza flu kills more than 20,000 – with no outrage, panics, and no closures. The media will continue to dedicate an unjustified amount of time to this virus, all the while more than 35,000 people will die in automobile accidents – – with no outrage, panics, and no closures. The media will continue to dedicate an unjustified amount of time to this virus, all the while more than 480,000 people will die from disease directly related to cigarette smoking – with no outrage, panics, and no closures.

The media and Progressive Elite will continue to drive their agenda using any and all means available to them.

    CDC, flu, statistics, SHTF, prepper

Influenza Flu Statistics – NOT Covid-19

    What to do now?

The first thing we need to do is realize this virus is NOT ebola or something even close. The vast majority from a health perspective will be just fine. There is no reason to panic. From an economic perspective, there is nothing we can do to control the stock market nor the mainstream media.

The following recommendations are based on the current situation as of March 15th, 2020. Things can change quickly.

    survival, checklist, SHTF, COVID-19, coronavirus

Steps to prepare for possible severe economic times ahead and limitations on access to medical care:

    • Reduce spending and save CASH.
    • If you do not have to go out in public – DON’T.
    • If having to go out in public – wear a mask and gloves. While this is an action that may seem extreme it’s a decision that each individual has to make for themselves. Utilize hand sanitizer and disinfectant to reduce the risk of transporting unwanted “bugs”.
    • Review your Preparedness System and look for holes that need to be filled. If you are spending more time inside this is a perfect opportunity to inventory all supplies which will allow a better view for determining what’s needed and what’s not.
    • Continue to stock up on food. Target a minimum 3 months supply for each and every person you expect to have under you’re roof.
    • Secure water filtration and put back at least 14 gallons for each person under your roof.
    • Refill each vehicle whenever fuel drops to 1/2 tank.
    • Keep all medications filled and get refills at the 25-day mark if possible.
    • Put back at least 10 gallons of fuel for each vehicle. Assuming 20mpg, that is 200 miles of range per vehicle.
    • Make sure you have all the items needed to participate in a 2-week quarantine.
    • Purchase online if possible to reduce exposure to going out in public. Amazon continues to be an excellent source, however, watch for price gouging.  Following an Amazon link from this website helps support what we are doing here with no additional cost to you. Thank you!!

Folks, the steps above are a few suggestions and certainly do not represent an all-inclusive list of everything that possibly could be done. This event is just getting underway. Updates will be posted as things develop.

Please comment below and share what you are experiencing and what your thoughts are on what is going on.

    Take care.

  • 5 Steps to Building a Digital Preparedness Library(2020 Update)

5 Steps to Building a Digital Preparedness Library(2020 Update)

digital preparedness library, prepper, SHTF, survival, preparedness, budget, PDF

I have gone through numerous preparedness digital library systems over the years. My shelves are overflowing with books but with the availability of the Internet and digital ebooks, guides, manuals and various pdf’s, the creation of a truly massive digital preparedness library is very possible. To create a digital survival & preparedness library I’ve used laptops, CD’s, DVD’s, USB flash drives, and external hard drives in an attempt to organize the information. After a lot of trial and error, I’ve come up with my current system. It is user-friendly, portable, inexpensive, and extremely versatile.

    Enter: The Amazon Fire Tablet.

Amazon, Fire, tablet, preparedness, library, ebook, SHTF

In a world where iPad’s and other brand name tablets cost hundreds of dollars – the Amazon Fire 7″ multimedia tablet came in at only $39.99(regular price $49.99).  For $39.99 the Fire provides excellent power, storage capacity – and multimedia capabilities. It represents a significant tool for prepper’s to build and organize a digital preparedness library. Capable of excepting microSD cards an almost endless supply of PDF’s, videos, documents, audio files, and pictures can be stored.

So – how to put it all together?

5 Steps to Building a Digital Preparedness Library

    20170114_171949

Step #1: Buy an Amazon Fire tablet(LINK)

Amazon, Fire tablet, prepper, digital, library, SHTF, information, pdf

Step #2: Install ES File Explorer App

    20170114_172123

Within the Appstore perform a search for “ES File Explorer” and download it.

There are other File Manager apps that can be used to access the contents of the Fire as well as inserted MicroSD cards. I am familiar and use only ES File Explorer.

Step #3: MicroSD Card – Create Folders/Organize Preparedness Information

survival, SHTF, preparedness, digital, lobrary, prepper, microSD

At this point purchased ebooks from Amazon will be automatically downloaded to the Fire tablet. Additional guides, manuals, documents, videos, audio files, etc. need to be added to a MicroSD card via a computer.

I have found the best method for this is to:

    1. Download desired files to laptop/computer.
    2. Insert the MicroSD card into the computer.
    3. Create folders on the MicroSD card which to organize the files. Examples would include Gardening, Firearms, Communication, First Aid, General Survival, Hunting, Fishing, Homesteading, etc.
    4. Transfer files into their corresponding folders.

Where to get all the files? The Survival & Preparedness Download page on this website is a good place to start.

Of note – if you ae interested in books by Paladin Press, they are available for purchase over at PaladinPressBooks.com.

    Step #4: Insert MicroSD Card

Amazon, Fire, digital, preparedness, SHTF, library, information

If the MicroSD card is inserted with the Fire on it may or may not recognize the card. If it does not restart the Fire tablet and it will search and locate the card and the information on it.

The Fire tablet can accept MicroSD cards up to 512gb’s of capacity. This is a truly massive amount of information. If the files to be stored are mostly PDF’s a 32gb card would likely be all that is needed. Video takes up an enormous amount of space thus 128gb or more would be advised. Another option is to have multiple cards which is fine. I prefer one card(with a duplicate backup) with all the information in one place.

Step #5: Open the ES File Explorer and Enjoy!!

preparedness, ES File Explorer, survival, digital, library

Tap on the ES File Explorer App icon and a menu will open. The internal Amazon Fire memory will be represented but what we are interested in is the MicroSD card. Click on the card and another screen will appear. As can be seen in the image above I created a folder titled “PREPAREDNESS” on mine. Whether you did something similar or not you can now access your card and all contents.

Summary: The Kindle Fire Tablet Digital Preparedness Library

What is so awesome about this digital library is I can sit down with this one device and access literally thousands of ebooks, manuals, guides, PDF’s – even movies and songs. I can read a military manual on navigation and then check the best planting time for cucumbers in my growing zone – and then put in some earphones and watch The Equalizer.

All of this for the cost of the Amazon Fire tablet and a MicroSD card. All of the content – including many ebooks – can be found for free or purchased at reasonable prices.

The Amazon Fire tablet can be easily charged from most portable solar systems and almost any portable power bank that will charge a cell phone. There are also numerous durable cases available for damage protection.solar, power, Amazon, Fire, survival, preparedness, library

While there are other tablets that can be used I found the versatility and cost of the Amazon Fire tablet to be best. There are also different sizes of the Fire tablet, however, the 7″ model is the least expensive. I have recently picked up the 10″ model and absolutely love it.

Having such a massive amount of information all on the Amazon Fire multimedia tablet is an invaluable resource.

  • Retreat Medical Station Part 2 of 2

Retreat Medical Station Part 2 of 2

retreat, medical, station, first aid, SHTF

Will you have what you need in a medical situation or emergency if one arises and there is nobody to call for help? No 911, no ambulance, no hospital; just you and the supplies you have. That thought should guide you as you plan for what you will need at a home/retreat in the event of an SHTF situation. Keep in mind that you may have more than just your immediate family to care for. Getting medications in children’s strengths and in chewable or liquid forms should also be considered.

Here’s a list that can get you started:

    Medications:

    • Antacids- Omeprazole (Prilosec OTC) is something that you can take daily to help prevent acid reflux, this medication is not for treatment of current heartburn and may take 1-4 days to start working. For occasional heartburn or indigestion get some chewable antacids such as TUMS.
    • Antibiotics- Fish antibiotics are stocked by some preppers as a replacement for antibiotics that are prescribed by physicians. Not every antibiotic will kill every bacteria. Without knowing the type of bacteria you are fighting you should use a broad-spectrum antibiotic such as Ampicillin or Amoxicillin. These can sometimes be found at farm supply stores such as Tractor Supply and various online sites.
    • Antibiotic cream- Neosporin ointment can be used on a clean wound to help prevent infection from a burn, scratch, cut that could become infected.
    • Antidiarrheals– Pepto-Bismol and Imodium are common upset stomach medications. If your food storage diet does not parallel your normal diet gastronomical issues could become an issue.
    • Anti-fungal cream– This will treat skin infections caused by a fungus. For example, ringworm, diaper rash, athletes foot, and jock itch.
    • Antihistamines- Diphenhydramine aka Benadryl helps with nausea, sleep and most importantly an allergic reaction. Keep Benadryl liquid as well as tablets on hand. If someone is having an allergic reaction liquid will work faster. There are also chewable tabs available for kids (and some adults) who can’t swallow pills. These can also assist those struggling to sleep get the rest they need.
    • Antivirals- Abreva is an over the counter ointment used for herpes simplex virus that causes cold sores on the face and or lips to keep on hand. Antiviral medications that are taken for the flu, shingles, and chickenpox are only available via prescription.
    • Eye Rinse//irrigations
    • Nasal Sprays
    • Pain/fever relievers – Examples of these are Acetaminophen aka Tylenol or Ibuprofen aka Motrin or Advil. Aspirin is also used as pain/fever relievers and is also used as a blood thinner. Aspirin in the form of a chewable 81mg tab is also used at the onset of chest pain because of its anti-clotting properties.
    • Wound cleaner- Anytime you get an abrasion it is imperative that the first thing you do is clean the area. If soap and water are unavailable Bactine spray works great. Hydrogen peroxide and rubbing alcohol are not recommended as they delay healing by damaging healthy tissue, however, they can be effective in killing bacteria from surfaces such as tweezers or hands.

    Supplies:

    • Bandages- Different sizes and shapes
    • Crutches
    • Face masks
    • Gauze- Variety of sizes
    • Ice packs- (Instant cold packs that that will activate with a squeeze will be very useful)
    • Scissors
    • Skin Glue (New Skin)
    • Splints- Different sizes and types (I really like SAM splints)
    • Syringes – Different sizes and types, as well as diabetic syringes, could be beneficial
    • Tapes- Different sizes and types (transpore tape, silk tape, medipore tape
    • Thermometers
    • Tweezers- Different styles and sizes

    Trauma items:

    Special Considerations:

    • EpiPen
    • Glucose Tabs
    • Glucose monitor
    • Insulin- For those who want to stock insulin there is a brand called ReliOn that is sold over the counter at Walmart’s pharmacy. Like all insulin, it needs to be refrigerated. Any diabetic who considers using this needs to speak with their provider to get guidance on what dose is needed.

    walmart, insulin, SHTF, retreat, preparedness

All items listed are good to keep at the retreat, at home, as well as in a bag. Keep your stock updated in regards to expiration dates. The sterility of sterile items could be compromised if you keep them past the expiration date or they are exposed to extreme hot or cold. Giving someone an infection when you were only trying to help could definitely cause unneeded use of resources and time. If the SHTF you would want the freshest things possible to start.

As with any medication, you should seek the advice of a medical expert. Know the side effects of medications, contraindications of use and look for adverse reactions after medication or treatment has been given.

first aid, preparedness, medical, SHTF, retreat

Being prepared for a medical emergency doesn’t just mean collect as many items as possible, it means becoming knowledgeable as well. Find out what your local hospital offers for CPR/First Aid classes and get books to keep as reference guides in the event there is no internet. First aid and basic medical knowledge is a prep that is valuable at any time, no matter the situation or state of our country.

first aid, medical, books, retreat, preparedness

I look forward to seeing comments and additions to this list from the readers!

  • Coronavirus Outbreak Accelerates

    Coronavirus Outbreak Accelerates

This post on the Coronavirus. is being published on the evening of January 27th, 2020. For the absolute latest information on the outbreak both in China and worldwide visit a variety of news sources such as the BBC, Fox News, and the CDC website.

As of today, there is a growing sense of concern as millions of people in China are being quarantined, thousands are suspected to have contracted the virus, and over 80 have died. There are 5 confirmed cases in the United States. The good news is it appears early in the outbreak China has taken massive and appropriate actions to reduce the chance of spreading.

    What is Coronavirus?

Direct from the CDC website2019 Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) is a virus (more specifically, a coronavirus) identified as the cause of an outbreak of respiratory illness first detected in Wuhan, China. Early on, many of the patients in the outbreak in Wuhan, China reportedly had some link to a large seafood and animal market, suggesting animal-to-person spread. However, a growing number of patients reportedly have not had exposure to animal markets, indicating person-to-person spread is occurring. At this time, it’s unclear how easily or sustainably this virus is spreading between people.

    Why be concerned?

It is too early in the outbreak to accurately determine the longlasting health effects on those inflicted. Early indications are that beyond severe illness, the death rate rest at around 14%. As the situation develops this number could be highly inaccurate. For reference, Ebola has a 90% fatality rate.

Initial Coronavirus cases led disease specialists to believe transmission was limited to animal-to-human. As the virus has spread it has become apparent that human-to-human transmission is now occurring. How contagious is the virus?

    Unknown.

What is especially dangerous about this virus is that symptoms do not begin to show for 7-14 days, however, the carrier remains contagious during this time period.

    survival, SHTF, virus, Coronavirus

    How to prevent infection?

Prevention is a must!! The key to infection control is to eliminate the ability to come in contact with any bodily fluids from an infected person. Respiratory droplets(from sneezing and coughing, etc.) must be avoided.

    From CDC.gov:

    survival, prepare, prepper, coronavirus

    Steps to Preparing

The key to preparing is preventing contact. With this in mind stopping the virus from entering your mouth, nose, and eyes is critical.

    • Wear a mask such as a 3M N95 mask or a respirator of some type.
    • Face shields, safety glasses, and swimming goggles can reduce the chance of contact.
    • gloves and other coverings should be used to prevent contact.
    • Disinfectant solutions such as Clorox and hospital-grade wipes to clean surfaces.
    • Be prepared to disinfect any and all clothing.

There is plenty of detailed information available all over the ‘net specifically on living in a pandemic. Google it.

Click HERE to download a copy of the video above.

The coming weeks will tell the tale as to how severe the Wufan Coronavirus becomes. Let’s hope it’s contained and soon becomes a non-factor.

  • Food Storage Recipe: SHEEPDOG PIE

    Food Storage Recipe: SHEEPDOG PIE

When thinking about what types of food that can be stored long-term canned goods are the first thing that comes to mind. Canned items can be mixed together to make a meal or just eaten alone. Stocking up on canned soups, stews or other pasta meals like Chef Boyardee makes perfect sense, especially if you are on the move and not in a set location. However, I still think there is something to be said for having something that resembles a home-cooked meal to lift spirits during difficult times. That is why I have tried to take my regular supper meals and make them out of things that I might have long term. Normally I use ground beef browned with onions as my meat in Shepherd’s Pie but I thought for this food storage recipe canned pot roast might make a good substitute.

For the record, this Northern Maine girl had NEVER tasted canned potatoes until I made this meal and I will always prefer my potatoes “uncanned”.  Yes, potatoes are grown in Maine. Maine is not all lobsters and lighthouses. Aroostook County, known as “The County” by Mainers, is located in Northern Maine and is known for its abundance of potato farms. If you ever get a chance to visit you can pick up a bag of locally grown potatoes at a roadside stand between September and October. Just leave money in the box.

Anyway, this recipe turned out to be a very tasty and filling meal that can easily be made with only a few cans of food.

What you will need for Sheepdog Pie:

    8×8 inch pan

    Aluminum Foil

    2 cans of Roast Beef

    1 can of corn

    2 cans of sliced potatoes

Garlic salt and pepper to taste

    Directions

    1. Preheat the grill to 375 degrees F

    2. Mash roast beef chunks and sauce with a fork and spread evenly on bottom of 8×8 pan

    3. Drain can of corn and spread evenly over top of roast beef

    4. Drain cans of potatoes and mash or place slices over the top of the corn. I choose to mash the potatoes with a potato masher but I think laying the slices over the top would also be good and faster. I also added some garlic salt and pepper to taste.

    5. Cover with tin foil and place on top rack of preheated grill for approximately 30 minutes

    6. It’s ready when hot and bubbly.

If available, top with shredded or parmesan cheese. The homemade banana bread made the meal even better.

    Enjoy!!!

  • Apocalyptic Chicken Alfredo Lasagna

    Apocalyptic Chicken Alfredo Lasagna

When planning meals and items that I would store in a food pantry in a SHTF situation I consider all tastebuds. This recipe made me think of the teenage food palate because just about every teenager I know loves Alfredo. I was a bit skeptical when I came up with this recipe at first because it was so simple, but that is what we are going for after all! This simple and easy to prepare meal gives the prepper another option other than beans and rice and although the no boil noodles are not able to be stored as long as beans and rice it will give you some options in the first year or so while you continue to plan for future meals. I think this Chicken Alfredo Lasagna will provide a tasteful comfort food feel when sitting around the kitchen table together.

Let me know what you think!

    What you will need:

    8×8 inch pan

    16oz jar of Alfredo Sauce

    Oven Ready Lasagna Noodles

    5oz can of White Chicken

    6 Tablespoons Parmesan Cheese

    Garlic Salt to taste

    1. Preheat the grill to 375ºF

    2. Coat the bottom of the pan with a thin layer of Alfredo sauce

    3. Place 2 lasagna noodles over the sauce lined pan

    4. Coat the lasagna noodles with a layer of Alfredo sauce, ½ the can of chicken, 2 tablespoons of parmesan cheese and garlic salt. Place 2 noodles over the top.

    5. Repeat step 4

    6. Coat the top layer with Alfredo sauce and sprinkle with 2 tablespoons of parmesan cheese and sprinkle with garlic salt to taste.

    7. Cover with tin foil

    8. Place on top rack of preheated grill

    9. Cook for approximately 30 minutes. You can tell if it is done when you stick a fork in it and the noodles are soft.

    10. ENJOY!

  • Budget Friendly Preparedness Tips – $10 Per Week

Budget Friendly Preparedness Tips – $10 Per Week

It’s been two weeks since my last post as things have been extremely busy. Hey – life happens.

While the economy is strong and unemployment is at record low levels there are many people that continue to struggle. While stats and data can be manipulated to prove almost anything, the fact remains that wages in 2019 reached the same point which they were all the way back in 1973. This is, of course, taking inflation and the Consumer Price Index in consideration. The point is regardless of all the positive economic news millions of Americans struggle to not only live week to week – but the challenge to actually prepare for uncertain times seems impossible.

Seconds make minutes. Minutes make hours. Hours make days. Days make the month. Do a little each week and after a short time progress has occurred.

Here are a few “$10 per week or less” budget-friendly preparedness tips:
