    Revolver for Concealed Carry

    I don’t currently own a revolver, though, I have had several. One of the best concealed carry options is a revolver made specifically for concealed carry. These revolvers often have no exposed hammers or have a “bobbed” hammer that will not catch on clothing. These are fairly slim and extremely simple to operate – and reliable.

    I’ve had an opportunity to get some trigger time behind several versions of the Ruger LCR. I’ve walked away each time with a smile and an admiration for the small pistol. I still do not own one but hope to come across a decent deal at some point. I’ve shot them in .357 Magnum, .38 Special, and .22 Magnum. My favorite was .22 Magnum. The LCR is a hybrid design that combines modern polymers with aluminum in its construction allowing for a lighter firearm than all-steel builds. For someone who carries frequently, the lower weight would be welcomed.

    One of the biggest drawbacks to carrying a revolver like the LCR over something….say….like the Glock 19 – capacity. Holding 5-6 rounds it pales in comparison to many mid-size. and even newer sub-compacts.

    Hey – options are a wonderful thing!

    The sheer number of options we have today for self-defense and sport is a wonderful thing. One question that always comes to mind……

    ‘Tis the Season for Gun Control #IWILLNOTCOMPLY

    I and many other 2nd Amendment supporting folks who have a which platform to speak have been screaming “GUN BANS ARE COMING!!!” for decades. We’ve professed the need to stock up now so many times no one could possibly keep count. We are doing it again after the current administration entered the White House and several violent mass shootings have many politicians suggesting that there must be something done about “guns”.

    Right now bills are being created in Congress that is gathering bipartisan support. I’m pissed!! All of these new gun laws and restrictions will only have an impact on law-abiding citizens. Criminals ignore laws and do not follow the rules. There are far too many who support the Constitution and also suggest that taking “common-sense measures” will save lives while still retaining the ability to defend oneself.

    I say……bullshit!

    There are tens of thousands of gun laws on the books all across this country. Compromise? We’ve compromised too much!! No more!!! None. Zero. Zilch!! Look at the areas which have the strictest gun control laws. Without fail, they have the highest gun crime rates.

    Across social media, I am telling people to use the hashtag – #IWILLNOTCOMPLY to send a single to those who support the 2nd Amendment to stand together and fight against tyranny. I WILL NOT  COMPLY to ANY further restrictions on firearms….period.

    Folks – the writing’s on the wall. Look at what our government is doing. It’s deliberate. There are many theories on what the end-game will look like. What I know is control is the major focus for those who thirst for more money, power, and stature.

    New AR Build Concept…….

    As we go through these incredible times that I call “frigg’n nuts” I’ve decided to build one more AR. I certainly hope this isn’t the last, but, you never know. Seriously – things are getting nuts and I see things getting MUCH worse in the very near future. As I put away food, medical supplies, and armament – I’m looking at being able to arm multiple members of my group. They need not just armament, but magazines, ammunition, and load-bearing gear.

    Yup – looking at doing another build. I have several stripped lowers including this 17 Design Billet. I’ve built lightweight carbines, several pistols, a Recce-concept, etc. Not sure what I’ll do next. AR pistols are fun. This lower won’t work but I’d love to do a 9mm build.

    That’s the fun with the AR. So many possibilities. I’ll update in a few weeks.

    Magazines and Ammunition

    I’ve been saying it for the past several years – stock up NOW. On what? On everything!!! I’ve especially suggested magazines and ammunition. We have seen numerous examples from the coast where higher capacity magazines and ammunition have climbed in prices due to either higher demand or lower supply issues – or both.

    We should learn from those events and take action to mitigate possible future events and put back sufficient quantities of supplies so if there are interruptions they can be weathered.

    Although there have been numerous warnings – most have failed to put back sufficient ammunition, magazines, and other needed items to compensate for any kind of restrictions or ban.

    With that – there is no better time than RIGHT NOW to fix that situation of you know you are in it.

    Here are some possible solutions should they be needed:

    Palmetto State Armory – Guns: PSA is known for incredible deals on firearms of all kinds. They carry a select number of rifles and pistols under their brand, as well as pretty much anything you could want. A lot of money can be saved watching their sales.

    Global Ordnance – Ammunition: GO has really come on as a major player in the firearms industry over the last 3 years. They are the main importer of the AREX-line of pistols. I’ve placed several orders with Global and have been very pleased. Low flat-rate shipping along with good prices on some of their offerings keeps me coming back to Global.

    Palmetto State Armory – Ammunition: PSA has some really good sales on ammunition. They have daily and weekly sales.

    Brownells – Ammunition: Brownells is not the first place I go when shopping online for ammunition, but, there can be a hidden gem here and there. They’ve started to follow PSA in offering magazines & ammunition combo deals that are quite attractive.

    Palmetto State Armory – Magazines: PSA started a new way of attracting customers by offering bulk magazine sales in combination with other firearm accessories. One example is a package deal selling 10 Magpul AR PMAG’s along with a PSA full-auto Nitride bolt for $129.99. That’s a heck of a good deal.

    Global Ordnance – Magazines: Global carries a variety of magazines made overseas that are extremely value-driven. I have purchased over 40 SHK AR-15 Steel 30-rd Magazines for around $5.99. They have excellent steel AK mags for $6.99 each. As of this writing, they are out of stock. I have shot several hundred rounds and they work great.

    Brownells – Magazines: Many years ago Brownells developed and marketed their aluminum 30-rd magazines with an anti-tilt follower. Way back then it quickly became one of my favorites. They still sell it and it’s still a great mag – especially for those with AR’s that have snug magwells. They frequently have sales on mags so check ’em out if you are on the hunt.

    Choate, Machine, and Tool: A legend in the firearms accessory business, Choate has been improving firearms from bolt actions to Ruger 10/22’s to AR’s and shotguns for decades. Stop by RifleStock.com and dream about what is possible.

    MidState Firearms: My personal “go to” for AR uppers. Highly recommended.

    Natchez: A reliable leader in the firearms industry for several decades, Natchez offers ammunition, accessories, etc. They have some really good sale prices.

    Sportsmans Warehouse: These folks have some great sales from time to time. Keep an eye on them. It’ll be worth it.

    Sportsmans Guide: Very popular supplier of military surplus, camping, and adventure gear – The Sportsmans Guide has been a go-to vendor for the past couple of decades. They have some excellent sales. Keep an eye on them.

  • Ruger PC Carbine in 9mm

    Ruger PC Carbine in 9mm

    The Ruger PC Carbine is basically a souped-up 9mm version of the Ruger 10/22 takedown. It has a blowback action and is extremely simple to takedown into two components – the stock/action and the barrel/handguard. The PC has the ability to accept Ruger 9mm magazines OR Glock 17/19 magazines(using a special adapter that is included). It can do the same with a Ruger American pistol but who the hell would own one of those? 😉

    A couple hundred rounds have been shot so far with no issues. Accuracy has been very good. 50-yards is as far as I’ve gone out and no adjustments to the sights have been made. Picking off tin cans and knocking over steel plates was easy out to that distance. I’m considering the installation of a red dot, however, I really how compact and slim it is right now. We’ll see.

    I love this gun. Throw it in a case, add a few 17-rd mags along with a couple 33 rounders and you’ve got a great truck setup. The only drawback so far and it’s fairly significant is the weight. It’s heavy. 6.8 pounds heavy. My 2 cents is it should weigh no more than 4.5-5 pounds. There’s no way I would call this a backpacking gun simply due to the weight. This carbine would be a great gun sitting in a rack on a farm’s UTV.

    Another positive for the Ruger PC is the fact it accepts Glock mags. Having your “long” gun accepting the same magazine as your side is a good thing. Cool!

    The Ruger PC Carbine is a fun gun to shoot. It’s a solid, reliable firearm that will provide years of service if properly cared for.

    Marking Your Magazines

    This is a Blast From the Past from a few years ago about marking AR magazines(or any mags) for easy identification. Figured some of you may have missed it. Well, here it is……

    I’ve recently started marking all my gun magazines. I’m doing this for a couple different reasons.

    First – if I have any type of firearm performance issue I will be able to differentiate the suspect magazine from other mags for the same gun. This will help narrow down if the performance issue is related to a specific magazine or possibly ammunition or a gun problem.

    Second – ownership is a consideration. Numerous times I have been shooting with friends and having common armament has led to confusion on who owns which magazine. Marking them solves that dilemma.

    For rifle magazines I use a stencil with numbers/letters. As can be seen above the first few I had some overspray. I took the plastic front cover off a 3-ring binder and cut a square to place the stencil. This stopped the overspray issue.

    I am using large characters on the AR magazines for easy recognition. A small number on the floor plate would work but I want maximum visibility.

    For pistol magazines, a simple Sharpie does the trick.

    Some shooters I know only mark magazines they have problems with and then chuck ’em if the problem repeats. That’s fine just not my preference. I’ve seen in forums that some people put their initials and even their address on them. Gotta pass on those two choices.

    One last use of magazine markings is to identify the type of ammunition used in the magazine. It may be advantageous to know that Magazine #4 is loaded with 28 rounds of XM855 while the others have standard XM183’s.

    Patriot II AR-Build. Considering the Possibilities

    I’m in the process of planning a new AR build – The Patriot II Rifle Build Project. This will be a sequel to the original Patriot Rifle build. With the AR platform, the possibilities are endless. This build will be different in that the entire firearm will be built around the trigger system – the ECHO AR-II Drop-in Binary Trigger.

    Here’s a bit of info in case you are unfamiliar with the Echo trigger.

    • Echo trigger system – an ATF-approved rifle trigger built specifically for AR 15 platform weapons.     For the upper, I’ll likely use the Radical Firearms upper I picked up on a Black Friday sale. I have it already so why not? Radical has had some questionable quality in the past. Recent reviews are good so we’ll see.

    That’s what I’ve got so far. Decisions will be made on optics, buffer system, stock, and a few other misc parts. For a lower, I’ll likely use a standard PSA or Anderson. I’ve been using anti-rotation pins in my last few builds. I just like the way they look and after all – when in the midst of battling hoards of zombies how you look is most important, right?

    Since Facebook kicked me off their platform including my 1776 group with more than 2,000 people I have been a regular user of MeWe. While far from perfect and deserving of many more users than it currently has – it’s pretty good. I have a personal account as well as a 177PatriotUSA.com MeWe Group and pages connected to some other initiatives.

    MeWe gained tremendous popularity a few years ago when Facebook started deleting firearms groups and really clamping down on any kind of firearm-related content.  On MeWe, I am a member of several gun selling/trading groups in Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina.     Note: I published this a few years ago and with the unfortunate accidental shooting event involving Alec Baldwin all over the news thought this would be a good time to bring it back. As humans, we tend to make mistakes – some more than others. Mistakes involving firearms can be not only dangerous but create life-changing events that some never recover from.

    Over the past two months, I’ve worked with several new shooters and have gone over the four rules of gun safety – over and over and over again. I ended up seeing one couple at the range recently and witnessed safety infractions happening and had to speak up and say something. That was not at all what I taught them.

    If you are new to shooting or maybe just never received the proper training read the following – and not just practice it but remember…and learn it.

    GUN SAFETY RULE #1:

    Every gun should be treated like it’s loaded. Complacency and carelessness have cost far too many lives and it’s totally preventable. Positive a gun is empty? Treat it likes it’s not.

     

    GUN SAFETY RULE #2:

    Handling a firearm comes with an awesome responsibility. Do not EVER point a firearm at something you are not willing to destroy – aka kill. This should be common sense but far too often it’s not. See someone break this rule accidentally? Let them know. It may be your life you end up saving.

    A question that often comes up is – “Well, where should I point the gun?” This depends on where you are and where everyone else is. Bottom line is the gun should never point at any person. Many shooting ranges have rules stating all firearms must point downrange at all times. When carrying firearms – both pistols and long guns – I prefer to keep barrels pointing downward.

     

    GUN SAFETY RULE #3:

    Accidental discharges are more often than not caused by a finger pulling a trigger when the shooter was NOT ready to shoot. This is a simple fix by keeping your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot.

     

    GUN SAFETY RULE #4:

    Never shoot at anything you have not absolutely identified AND know what is behind it.  Targets are often missed and you are accountable for every round exiting your gun. Bullets can travel great distances so you must know exactly where every shot will end up.

    As a gun owner, you are responsible for handling all firearms in a safe manner. As a responsible advocate for the 2nd Amendment, I would go further to say you are also responsible for watching out for others to prevent accidents and help educate.

    I have long sought a Steyr M9A1 9mm pistol. In a crowded field where so many pistols are only slight deviations from each other, the Steyr has been truly unique for years. The original M9A1 became aged as modern technology improved not only manufacturing and quality, but accuracy and triggers as well. Steyr came out with their new A2 MF and just today I had the ability to lay my hands on this unicorn. I absolutely loved it.

    I previously published this a few years ago and with new people visiting the site thought it would be a good idea to bring it back around. – Rourke

    It seems every time I turn around there is a new manufacturer of AR-type weapons as well as magazines. Magazines are incredibly important and can render the nicest weapon almost useless if it won’t feed correctly. A $750 paperweight is not really needed….is it? Maybe it’s just me.

    1. Lancer L5 Advanced Warfighter 30-round Magazines – Surprised? I love the Lancer. They are extremely reliable and the metal feed lips are reassuring. When pulling from a chest rig or a belt they are easy to grab. The translucent ones provide feedback as to how many rounds are left. Click HERE for more information.

    2. Magpul PMAG 30-round Magazine – Generation 2 or 3 I don’t care. These things work and have proven super reliable and the absolute best bang for the buck. By far I have more PMAG’s than any other mag. This is primarily due to their price. Click HERE for more information.

    3. Brownells USGI Aluminum 30-round Magazine – excellent quality control and superb reliability. Advantage of these aluminum magazines is they will fit just fine where some polymer magazines are a tight fit. Click HERE for more information.

    4. D&H Aluminum 30-rd. Magazines – These magazines are traditionally less expensive than others and work great. I have over 10 of them and have no issues. D&H magazines are aluminum and have proven to be reliable – at least for me.

    5. Hexmag 30-round Magazine –  Newer on the market the Hexmag is an excellent magazine. I have experienced a couple of issues with these being snug in certain lowers. For the most part these are right on par with PMAG’s. Click HERE for more information.

    The SureFire 60-round aluminum magazine is terrible. I have performed limited testing and while function was ALMOST perfect – loading it was horrible. I hated the thing. ProMag polymer 30-rounders look very similar to PMAG’s and functioned fantastic. The problem is out of 3 AR’s I tested them in they would not cleanly exit the magazine well. Seems that the magazine catch was catching on a logo or something on the side of the magazine. I filed the edges down to fix it. Still – that is ridiculous.

    As insanely crazy as it might sound the banning of ammunition has been discussed for decades by gun control advocates. One of the main motivating factors is the 2nd Amendment itself. For the most part, anti-gunners have failed in their efforts to ban guns outright as the 2nd Amendment protects our right to “keep and bear arms.” Nowhere is ammunition mentioned, thus conceivably, ammunition is free game to be controlled and regulated as any other item.

    Over the years numerous ammunition proposals have been made including may that reached Congress:

    • Taxing ammunition to such an extent that it became unaffordable for most people
    • Requiring background checks in order to purchase ammunition
    • Requiring serial numbers on ammunition which would increase manufacturing costs, thus ammunition costs
    • Creating a law that would limit the amount of ammunition an individual would be allowed to possess
    • Elimination of “private sales” for ammunition
    • Banning of online ammunition sales

    I’m sure a few have been missed.

    As the Biden Administration has banned the importation of Russian firearms and ammunition, there is little doubt the gun control crowd will look at ways to expand into additional markets.

    While I don’t advocate panic buying for anything, everyone has to make up their own mind on how much ammunition – and other firearm-related items they have versus their need.

    Those of us who enjoy sending freedom seeds downrange continue to pound into financial and supply oblivion with the ammunition market. The latest hit involves the Biden Administration banning the importation of Russian-made firearms and ammunition. Due to this, there has been a new run on ammunition driving prices up especially on common Russian imported calibers such as the 7.62 x 39.

    This is not a good situation. Based on my estimates up to 25-30% of the ammunition shot by 2nd Amendment supporters across America was imported from Russia. I know for myself at least 50% of long gun ammunition has been steel cased with most from Russia.  In pistols? Not so much.

    As usual, we will likely be our own worst enemy by going out and panic buying driving up the price. For those with AK’s and in need of ammo, I get it. Very little 7.62×39 and similar metric calibers is made in the United States nor outside Russia anywhere in any major quantities. It could be years before these calibers are available without spending a fortune. Right now might be the time.

    I hope Palmetto State Armory and other similar companies will invest in the equipment to mass-produce the ammunition which is needed to feed their guns. That might be the quickest solution.

    Guess I’m not buying that AK I’ve been drooling over.

    Early on as a young teen survivalist, I dreamt of numerous guns I wanted to have as part of my survival battery.     I’ve managed to grab some .22LR, .308, and .243 Win over the past two weeks walking into Walmart. Local gunshops have most common caliber, but, are still asking ridiculous prices. I get the increased prices when the supply level was much lower. When they have CASES and CASES stacked in full view with no limits but still asking $29.99 a box for 9mm? Nope. Not gonna do it.

    I want to support my local shops but not when they are screwing their local customers. Every penny counts especially nowadays.

    Yes. You Have to Aim a Shotgun

    Seems a lot of people gained their tactical knowledge from the movies especially when it comes to shotguns. I’ve seen it all over the Internet. Folks state the big advantage of a shotgun is there is no need to aim. Just point in the general direction and destroy your target.  For far too many this fallacy is used as common knowledge.

    Terminator, shotgun, SPAS-12, prepper, SHTF, defense, shotgun

    Multi-projectile ammunition such as bird and buckshot do provide an advantage as precise shot placement is not as critical compared to rifle and pistol rounds. Yes – the projectile spread from a shotgun increases covering more target area as distance grows from the shooter, however, it’s not an “aim in the general direction” situation. For common cylinder bore defensive shotguns the spread of most loads average around .5″ – 1.0″ per yard. This means that at a living room distance of 15 feet the spread would max out around 3-4 inches. Yes – a concerted effort must be made to aim.

    One of the major benefits of the shotgun is the sheer devasting power and the massive variety of loads available for all kinds of purposes. Bird hunting, defense, deer hunting, turkeys – there are tons of loads with different projectiles. Variety is the spice of life, right?

    What’s important is to test your own equipment and loads to see how your specific ammunition and shotguns pattern together.

    BTW – this is my Mossberg Shockwave. Love this thing. I use mini-shells in it almost exclusively.

    Stocking Up On Magazines?

    For over a year the firearms market has been a rollercoaster ride. The threat of civil unrest spreading across the country with COVID right beside it drove people to gun shops sending prices upwards and supplies down. Ammunition came under high demand and prices skyrocketed.

    Everyone ignored magazines(for the most part).

    Market conditions have certainly leveled out and prices have improved. Even with an anti-gun White House and Left-controlled Congress, things are heading in the direction of normal, though we are still quite a ways. Once the ramblings of serious gun control begin prices will likely get back on that rollercoaster once again.

    Back to magazines. Anti-gunners have long targeted “high capacity magazines” frequently professing legislation that limits magazine capacity to 10 rounds(or less). Right now as of this writing magazines are available in large quantities and at very good prices. A few months ago I purchased an additional 200 AR magazines at rock-bottom prices. Why? The main reason was to secure an ample supply stream that would suffice for myself and others should I need to equip them.

    When, and I do believe it’s when not if – severe gun control is implemented there is no doubt magazines will play a major role. When this occurs what you have at the time may be all you can get. No more. Seems to me it would be a good idea to snatch up some extra mags for any magazine-fed firearms you have soon.

    A couple suggestions on where to go to stock up:

    1. Global Ordnance – they are a growing industry leader of firearms and firearms accessories including magazines.
    2. Palmetto State Armory – watch their incredible sales for great prices on package deals.
    3. Your local gun shop.
