  • Mail Run: Tactical Stuff

    Mail Run: Tactical Stuff

As it often happens received notifications from my local UPS Store that I had some packages arrive. I recently ordered some Glock 17 magazines to shore up my supplies. With the discussions in Congress of potential gun control bills and numerous a$$hole Republicans agreeing – I thought now was as good a time as any.

Ruger PC9, 9mm, glock magazines, shtf, prepper, carbine, preparedness, survival

I own a newly purchased Blue-Label Glock 17, as well as a Ruger PC9. I bought the PC9 on a whim many months ago and at the same time bought 10 15-rd Magpul PMAG Glock magazines to go with it. Boy – wish I could go back and make those 17-rounders, however, so far have not gotten the whole time-travel thing down.

Back to reality: So I purchased the Glock 17 Gen 5 which came with 3 17-round magazines. Since I am concerned that there could be some legislation coming that may affect over-10 round magazines I decided to order up a few for the Glock(and the PC9). I grabbed 5 OEM Glock 17-rounders along with 5 Magpul PMAG 17-rounders.

Decent – but I’ll likely grab a few more.

    Magazines and Ammunition

Strict and severe gun control is just a matter of time. It may be a matter of weeks, or, it may be a matter of years. It will happen. Remembering what it was likely after the passage of the 1994 Assualt Weapons Ban I cannot help but remember that feeling of regret that I had not put back all that I had wanted – or needed.

No better time than the present.

    Stack it deep!!

  • Thoughts on Fire Starting by Myke

Thoughts on Fire Starting by Myke

Longtime reader Myke recently commented on a post I published on Fire Starting. What he describes as an inexpensive and effective fire starting tool is exactly something I’ve experimented with previously. Excellent idea Myke – so I am sharing it with as many people as possible. ~ Rourke

I’ve made the popular cotton ball/petroleum jelly type fire starters before and found them too messy. I came across what I feel is a better way to make fire starters. Go to Dollar Tree or Walmart and buy the round cotton “makeup remover” pads. You can get 80 per pack.

    • Go to a thrift store and buy cheap candles, tongs, and a pan.
    • At home, put newspaper on the counter where you’ll be working. I use a small butane single burner camp stove because no matter how hard you try, you will spill some of the wax and its time consuming to clean it up in the kitchen.
    • Melt the candle wax in the pan then place the pads in the wax. As you pull a pad out put another in. This lets them soak up the wax as you rotate through the process.
    • Place the soaked pads on the newspaper. When you’re done and they’ve hardened, I’ve found that they fit great in one of those Lay’s potato chip plastic container tunes (like a Pringle container but plastic). There’s enough room on the side to fit a butane lighter and even a Magnesium firestarter block with Ferro rod (found at Harbor Freight $1.99).
    • To use just bend the wafer back and forth then tear that bend halfway. This exposes the cotton fibers to ignite.

I’ve had these burn for 3-4 minutes with a flame height of 5″. In my experience, the petroleum jelly balls burn a little longer but the flame doesn’t reach as high, and they are messier. I’ve made a number of these inexpensive firestarter kits and placed them in all of my BOB’S, 72 hr Kits, Get Home Bags, etc.

Just my 2 1/2 cents worth.

  • ‘Tis the Season for Gun Control #IWILLNOTCOMPLY

‘Tis the Season for Gun Control #IWILLNOTCOMPLY

I and many other 2nd Amendment supporting folks who have a which platform to speak have been screaming “GUN BANS ARE COMING!!!” for decades. We’ve professed the need to stock up now so many times no one could possibly keep count. We are doing it again after the current administration entered the White House and several violent mass shootings have many politicians suggesting that there must be something done about “guns”.

gun conrol, Senate, bipartisan, gun ban, AR-15

Right now bills are being created in Congress that is gathering bipartisan support. I’m pissed!! All of these new gun laws and restrictions will only have an impact on law-abiding citizens. Criminals ignore laws and do not follow the rules. There are far too many who support the Constitution and also suggest that taking “common-sense measures” will save lives while still retaining the ability to defend oneself.

    I say……bullshit!

There are tens of thousands of gun laws on the books all across this country. Compromise? We’ve compromised too much!! No more!!! None. Zero. Zilch!! Look at the areas which have the strictest gun control laws. Without fail, they have the highest gun crime rates.

Across social media, I am telling people to use the hashtag – #IWILLNOTCOMPLY to send a single to those who support the 2nd Amendment to stand together and fight against tyranny. I WILL NOT  COMPLY to ANY further restrictions on firearms….period.

Folks – the writing’s on the wall. Look at what our government is doing. It’s deliberate. There are many theories on what the end-game will look like. What I know is control is the major focus for those who thirst for more money, power, and stature.

    #iwillnotcomply

Spread the word and keep putting back guns, ammunition, and magazines.

  • Life’s Journey………

    Life’s Journey………

Over the past 3-4 years I’ve been on a journey that I would never have predicted. This journey has led me from South Carolina to Georgia, back to South Carolina – and now to Kentucky.
It’s been an emotional rollercoaster ride and all along I continued to repeat, “Just keep moving forward. Just keeping moving forward.” I did.
I’m sharing this as I know there is someone out there going through their own personal SHTF and is not focused on some apocalyptic event years from now. No – they just want to make it through the night.
For that someone – Keep moving forward. Just keep moving forward.
[On a side note the picture attached to this post is from outside my camper next to the Ohio River. No filter. Simply amazing.]
  • New AR Build Concept…….

    New AR Build Concept…….

As we go through these incredible times that I call “frigg’n nuts” I’ve decided to build one more AR. I certainly hope this isn’t the last, but, you never know. Seriously – things are getting nuts and I see things getting MUCH worse in the very near future. As I put away food, medical supplies, and armament – I’m looking at being able to arm multiple members of my group. They need not just armament, but magazines, ammunition, and load-bearing gear.

Yup – looking at doing another build. I have several stripped lowers including this 17 Design Billet. I’ve built lightweight carbines, several pistols, a Recce-concept, etc. Not sure what I’ll do next. AR pistols are fun. This lower won’t work but I’d love to do a 9mm build.

That’s the fun with the AR. So many possibilities. I’ll update in a few weeks.

  • Review: Nekteck 21W Portable Solar Charging Kit

Review: Nekteck 21W Portable Solar Charging Kit

I’ll be quick and to the point: Buy it. I reviewed this portable solar panel previously and am sharing it again. It’s still available and a great deal.

I’ve dabbled with small solar kits for over a decade. Charging battery packs and cell phones are good tasks for these small portable solar panels. The Nekteck 21W Solar Charger is packed with features including two USB ports, a Micro-USB cable, metal eyelets for hanging, and a zipper pouch built-in for storage of other cables and accessories. Build quality appears top-rate which means it’s durable and rugged. Oh – it’s waterproof as well.

Above: The Nekteck folds down to 6.3x 11.1x 1.06 inches.

Above: Opened up, the three Monocrystalline panels collect energy from the sun. The two metal eyelets allow the charger to be hung or connected be positioned for full view of the suns rays.

Below: A 6700mAh portable power bank was used to test the NekTeck.

Below: The NekTeck 21W Portable Solar Charger was connected to the power bank and left on top of a vehicle all day.

The power bank was completely drained at the start of the day. I checked it at 4:00pm and it was fully charged. I’m not sure how long it took to charge it but the bottom line is it was able to charge it in one session.

    How Might This Be Used?

These types of solar panels are designed to charge batteries – and battery packs. Charging phones and GPS devices can be done while backpacking, camping, and other outdoor activities that take you away from the grid. Any battery-powered device that is utilized off-grid can have its batteries charged via a solar panel such as this assuming the daily usage does not outrun the charging capacity. One example of this would be an off-grid portable homemade ham repeater. Another would be to charge power banks which would then be used to charge other devices.

Running under $40 with free shipping this solar charger is a steal.

    HIGH RECOMMENDATION

  • One World Government…….Evil Leaders

    One World Government…….Evil Leaders

Watch the video below related to the New World Order and One World Government. It does an excellent job showing how powerful leaders in the world – including those both domestic and abroad – are spewing evil rhetoric and taking action which will negatively affect your life.

I’d like to suggest that the mid-term elections this coming Fall and the following presidential election will somehow steer this ship which is heading towards an iceberg in a safe direction. Sorry. Can’t do it. What I will say and it’s the same thing I’ve been saying for several years: Get Ready.

Get ready by positioning yourself to be as independent of the system as possible. Independent from supply chains, corporate mandates, and price increases. Independent from political induced inflation as well as governmental policies, regulations – and even laws. Yes – to the maximum extent possible – independent and self-sufficient. Being 100% self-sustained is nearly impossible today, but, the best you can do is better than where most of us are today.

  • Magazines and Ammunition

    Magazines and Ammunition

I’ve been saying it for the past several years – stock up NOW. On what? On everything!!! I’ve especially suggested magazines and ammunition. We have seen numerous examples from the coast where higher capacity magazines and ammunition have climbed in prices due to either higher demand or lower supply issues – or both.

We should learn from those events and take action to mitigate possible future events and put back sufficient quantities of supplies so if there are interruptions they can be weathered.

Although there have been numerous warnings – most have failed to put back sufficient ammunition, magazines, and other needed items to compensate for any kind of restrictions or ban.

With that – there is no better time than RIGHT NOW to fix that situation of you know you are in it.

Here are some possible solutions should they be needed:

Palmetto State Armory – Guns: PSA is known for incredible deals on firearms of all kinds. They carry a select number of rifles and pistols under their brand, as well as pretty much anything you could want. A lot of money can be saved watching their sales.

Global Ordnance – Ammunition: GO has really come on as a major player in the firearms industry over the last 3 years. They are the main importer of the AREX-line of pistols. I’ve placed several orders with Global and have been very pleased. Low flat-rate shipping along with good prices on some of their offerings keeps me coming back to Global.

Palmetto State Armory – Ammunition: PSA has some really good sales on ammunition. They have daily and weekly sales.

Brownells – Ammunition: Brownells is not the first place I go when shopping online for ammunition, but, there can be a hidden gem here and there. They’ve started to follow PSA in offering magazines & ammunition combo deals that are quite attractive.

Palmetto State Armory – Magazines: PSA started a new way of attracting customers by offering bulk magazine sales in combination with other firearm accessories. One example is a package deal selling 10 Magpul AR PMAG’s along with a PSA full-auto Nitride bolt for $129.99. That’s a heck of a good deal.

Global Ordnance – Magazines: Global carries a variety of magazines made overseas that are extremely value-driven. I have purchased over 40 SHK AR-15 Steel 30-rd Magazines for around $5.99. They have excellent steel AK mags for $6.99 each. As of this writing, they are out of stock. I have shot several hundred rounds and they work great.

Brownells – Magazines: Many years ago Brownells developed and marketed their aluminum 30-rd magazines with an anti-tilt follower. Way back then it quickly became one of my favorites. They still sell it and it’s still a great mag – especially for those with AR’s that have snug magwells. They frequently have sales on mags so check ’em out if you are on the hunt.

Choate, Machine, and Tool: A legend in the firearms accessory business, Choate has been improving firearms from bolt actions to Ruger 10/22’s to AR’s and shotguns for decades. Stop by RifleStock.com and dream about what is possible.

MidState Firearms: My personal “go to” for AR uppers. Highly recommended.

Natchez: A reliable leader in the firearms industry for several decades, Natchez offers ammunition, accessories, etc. They have some really good sale prices.

Sportsmans Warehouse: These folks have some great sales from time to time. Keep an eye on them. It’ll be worth it.

Sportsmans Guide: Very popular supplier of military surplus, camping, and adventure gear – The Sportsmans Guide has been a go-to vendor for the past couple of decades. They have some excellent sales. Keep an eye on them.

    Stay safe folks!!

  • Uvalde Mass Shooting

    Uvalde Mass Shooting

“UVALDE, Tex. — The gunman who opened fire at an elementary school here shared his intentions to carry out an attack in private social media messages shortly before slaughtering at least 19 children and two adults, officials said Wednesday.”

It goes without saying – it still has to be said – that the killing of innocent lives is unfortunate and absolutely evil. Regardless of the reasons that some defective demented soul looks at a 9-year-old child and pulls the trigger to end an innocent life – evil is involved. Politicians on both sides have come out to condemn the deaths and then very quickly throw politics and agendas into the mix.  There’s one thing that is easy to understand in this insanity:

    Evil exists. Period.

Evil has existed for many millenniums.  It has taken brave men and women to stand up and combat those with evil intentions to keep the masses safe. People have had to take responsibility for themselves and their families – or suffer the consequences. Evil sometimes touches the lives of very few, and other times countless millions. The battle between good and evil has always existed and will always exist.

While pundits, politicians, and the media make demands to restrict citizens from owning firearms, criminals and evil-doers laugh as they know what the rest of us know – laws do not apply to those who ignore them. Politicians will promote laws that will do nothing….zero – to stop evil. Any new laws will absolutely impact law-abiding citizens all the while decreasing safety and creating more victims.

Selective outrage is not a reason to step on people’s rights and freedoms.

    Stay safe.

  • Review: 1,200 Lumen Flashlight For Less Than $20

Review: 1,200 Lumen Flashlight For Less Than $20

I originally posted this back in January of 2021. It all still holds true and the flashlight is still available. I also still have one in my truck, camper, and daily carry backpack.

Flashlights over the last ten years have improved tremendously in not just brightness, but battery life. Many companies such as Surefire, Streamlight, and Olight have lead the industry pushing the limits of performance while maintaining consistent pricing. Type in “flashlight” in the search bar on Amazon and you will see an endless list of complete crap flashlights claiming high lumen counts while in reality delivering mediocre brightness.

While supplying my company’s maintenance department with flashlights I decided to order some “no-name” brand lights with great reviews off of Amazon. Advertised as providing 1,200 lumens and having a simple on/off mode I was intrigued. I clicked the Buy Now and a few days later they were delivered.

A quick summary: These lights had heft to them the thin aluminum cheap lights did not have. They felt like they were rugged and were built to be used. I threw in two CR123 batteries, clicked the button on the end cap – and BAM!!! I was impressed!!

    Good first impression.

After seeing the light was indeed extremely bright I ventured outside in the dark. The throw was fantastic with a very focussed beam(which I prefer). Lighting up the side of a house well over 100 yards away was easy. I pulled out my Odin Mini(review coming soon) and did a comparison. The Odin blasts 1250 lumens downrange and when placed side by side with my inexpensive find they were very comparable. The Odin’s light was more white while the other slightly yellowed. Hey  – I’m comparing a $16 flashlight with one that costs $140.

Below are a few pictures I took after placing the light outside in the snow(left all day into the night).

Picture above shows brightness in complete darkness. The photo really doesn’t do it justice.

    SUMMARY

I left this gem in the snow all day until dark. The weather warmed and much of the snow melted and soaked the flashlight. No issues.

This is a flashlight at publishing time sells for $18.99. From the construction to the simple on/off operation, to the incredible brightness this is one of the highest value preparedness items I have ever run across. At my plant, the maintenance guys have been using these lights for over a month with no issues.

I have not mounted this light to a weapon and have no idea about its ability to handle recoil. My Odin Mini can fill that role just fine. For the pack, pocket, and pocketbook? Absolutely.

    John Rourke, Dreams, Life……..the Apocalypse

This is going to be a deeply personal post. I certainly have some apprehensions about posting it. As a kid, I always felt a bit different. Not that I was smarter than everyone else but I felt I was more “aware” of what was going on around me.  At 52 years old I have been divorced and connected with someone that I have absolutely no doubt whatsoever is my soulmate – MainePrepperGirl. I was fired from a job I worked at a company for nearly 20 years and changed careers. I’ve moved several times going from South Carolina to Georgia, back to South Carolina and now we’re in Kentucky.

My lifelong dream has been to live independently and write. Write stories, books, articles, and be creative. I’ve enjoyed so much connecting with like-minded folks and gaining knowledge and providing advice that others could use to prepare for hard times ahead. I’ve written books, been featured IN books – and been 100% human and screwed up just as everyone else has.

Over the last 40 years, I’ve been driven by an unrelating feeling that “something” awaits us around the corner that will threaten our very existence. What awaits us is unknown and unpredictable. Regardless – I’ve prepared and called on others to do the same.

In 2022 we see just an absolute insane series of events unfolding. Inflation is affecting almost everyone as gas prices, food, and almost everything are going up in price. People are wondering how they will put gas in their vehicles AND put food in their children’s mouths. We have a superpower invading a small country and new viruses popping up to threaten our safety. Insanity walks into schools killing our children while politicians make decisions that will affect our lives based on polls rather than principles.

Born in Massachusets, moved all around the east coast – I now sit in Kentucky living full-time in a camper right along a river.

Life is unpredictable. What will happen tomorrow? Who knows?

I’ll be with MPG and we will adapt, overcome, and evolve however we need to.

Hope all of you will be there with me as well.

    Take care all –

  • UPDATE: Move to Kentucky is Complete

UPDATE: Move to Kentucky is Complete

Our move to Kentucky from South Carolina is officially complete. Over the past 6-8 weeks a lot has happened and it’s not nearly over. I’ve been swamped as we prepped for the move, transferred the camper to Kentucky, then moved my cargo trailer as well.

Camper during the trip from South Carolina to Kentucky.

    Camper in-place on the river.

Fellow Patriot Brigade member “Doomsday” moved the camper for me as my truck did not have the towing capacity. Back when we purchased the camper plans were to move up to a bigger truck – but I’m sure you know what happened to the truck market. Nope – couldn’t pull that trigger and add to my debt. Thanks Doomsday!!!!!!

After arriving in northern Kentucky and putting the camper in place, a giant storm came through that night. The camper rocked as the rain went sideways and I have to admit I was more than a little concerned. All was good.No leaks and no damage. Wow! It was something else.

After getting the camper in place a return to South Carolina was needed as I needed to complete another 6 weeks at my job. MainPrepperGirl had headed to Kentucky about a week before me to start job hunting. As a nurse with a fantastic resume it should not take long for her to find something. My replacement was hired, I worked on some training fro him – and just a few days ago I hooked up my 7′ x 16′ cargo trailer and headed to Kentucky.

Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System – installed on the Ram Warlock

About a week prior to heading out to Kentucky I installed a set of Timbren’s to reduce the squat of my truck under load. I own a 2019 Ram 1500 Cloasic Warlock – which I love. It has a great ride, however, the rear suspension is very soft. The Timbrens worked great.

The cargo trailer was loaded at near capacity. It road great with the Curt Sway Bar installed. First few hours of the trip had my nerves fried due to a lot of construction, traffic, and narrow lanes.

    line

A couple days ago I arrived after a 10-hour drive. It felt so good to finally be there, although, I’ve had some apprehension as my two boys are still back in South Carolina. Although they are grown with one of them a father and the other is engaged – they are still my two little boys.

Storm Coming Through At Ohio River in Kentucky
We are still getting settled and I start my new job Monday. Same company – a lot larger facility. I will walk into the facility and proclaim – “I came here to chew bubblegum and kick some ass……and I’m all out of bubblegum.” Ok – maybe I won’t exactly do that but you get the point.

I’m looking forward to doing some fishing right out in my backyard and we’ll be exploring the entire area to seek out adventure and increase our quality of life. Hiking. Biking. Exploring. There’s a gym nearby and we’ve been going there each morning. We are prioritizing health and fitness to a new level.

I need to find a shooting range.

Over the next several months we are going to be looking to buy a house. Interest rates are heading up and hopefully, prices will start dropping. While we are largely mobile and I’ll be documenting our contingency planning in the Patriot Brigade membership area. We hope to find a place that is out in the country and with few neighbors. 5 acres or more would be good. We’ll see.

Stay safe folks. It’s getting crazy!

  • IN STOCK: Sawyer Mini Water Filter Bucket Kit

IN STOCK: Sawyer Mini Water Filter Bucket Kit

Here’s my regular every-three-month blurb about my Sawyer Bucket Kits. I have in stock a large supply of Sawyer Mini Water Filter Bucket Kits and they are ready to ship. If you are not familiar with this kit, it allows the popular Sawyer Mini Water Filter to be adapted for bucket use. The advantage of using this kit with the Sawyer is providing large volumes of filtered, clean water for multiple people.

See below for more information on this simple and inexpensive accessory for the Sawyer Water Filter.

    line

I appreciate the interest that has been shown regarding the Sawyer Mini Water Filter Bucket Kit. I have enjoyed using the Sawyer Mini Water Filter. It is simple to operate, reliable, and inexpensive. The biggest drawback of the Sawyer is using it with multiple people. It can be done but you’re either all sucking on the same straw or using a lot of time and energy filling small bags or bottles with dirty water and squeezing through the filter. I figured there had to be a better way to use this great filter.

Enter: the Sawyer Mini Water Filter Bucket Kit.

This simple kit adapts the Sawyer Mini Water Filter(not included) for bucket use. Once a hole is drilled in the supply bucket the components are assembled(instructions included) – and then the Sawyer is attached. That’s it.

Currently, the needed drill bit is not included as I didn’t want to add the expense for something that people may have already. Regardless – any local Harbor Freight, Home Depot, or Lowe’s carries the bit and of course Amazon.

Actual Trial With the Sawyer Bucket Kit.

#1: Started with a bucket and threw in a bunch of dirt and added a couple gallons of water.

    20160515_162845

#2: Used a towel as a pre-filter to remove the larger particles.

    20160515_163134

#3: Towel caught the larger sediment/contaminants. A finer pre-filter for capturing more of the larger particles would be suggested(coffee filters good for this).

    20160515_163415

#4: Below the contaminated water ready to go through the Sawyer.

    20160515_163502

    #5: Filtering operation in progress.

    20160515_163612

#6: Close up of the stream of filtered water exiting the filter.

    20160515_171410

#7:  This is what the non-filtered water looked like pre-filtering.

    20160515_163823

#8: Filtered water is crystal clear after using the Sawyer Mini Water Filter Bucket Kit.

    20160515_170526

The results are impressive. It’s not surprising the water looked crystal clear after all that is what is supposed to happen. Flow rate was excellent at around 5-6 gallons an hour.

I drank the entire glass of filtered water and found it had no off-taste and tasted like….well…..clean water. While this test was dealing with only sediment and suspended particles in water, the Sawyer also excels at removing pathogens and bacteria.

Currently, the kit is priced at $12.99 with free shipping or $16.99 for a set of two which is a bargain. Add the Sawyer Mini Water Filter for around $20 and a high volume water filtration system can be put together for around $30. Not bad.

Check out the 1776PatriotUSA Survival & Preparedness Store for these water filter kits as well as other products.

I would appreciate it if you would share this on social media. Kits are ready to ship now.

    Thanks

  • New Gas Price Records Set Daily, Stock Market in Turmoil…..Inflation

New Gas Price Records Set Daily, Stock Market in Turmoil…..Inflation

The transportation of all goods – including you and I – is getting more and more expensive. Over the past week, several new records have been broken as fuel prices continue their climb. The stock market has dropped 1,100 points just today as recession fears loom. Inflation – that word that’s on everyone’s lips – is making everything more expensive and shrinking the buying power of our dollars.

Many are predicting these trends will continue and set a course for severe economic strife over the next few years.

The chart above represents inflation rates in Argentina. It’s an example of what’s possible.

What’s the solution? Well, that’s above my paygrade. Take care of you and yours. My two cents.

    Take care all.

  • Ruger PC Carbine in 9mm

    Ruger PC Carbine in 9mm

The Ruger PC Carbine is basically a souped-up 9mm version of the Ruger 10/22 takedown. It has a blowback action and is extremely simple to takedown into two components – the stock/action and the barrel/handguard. The PC has the ability to accept Ruger 9mm magazines OR Glock 17/19 magazines(using a special adapter that is included). It can do the same with a Ruger American pistol but who the hell would own one of those? 😉

A couple hundred rounds have been shot so far with no issues. Accuracy has been very good. 50-yards is as far as I’ve gone out and no adjustments to the sights have been made. Picking off tin cans and knocking over steel plates was easy out to that distance. I’m considering the installation of a red dot, however, I really how compact and slim it is right now. We’ll see.

I love this gun. Throw it in a case, add a few 17-rd mags along with a couple 33 rounders and you’ve got a great truck setup. The only drawback so far and it’s fairly significant is the weight. It’s heavy. 6.8 pounds heavy. My 2 cents is it should weigh no more than 4.5-5 pounds. There’s no way I would call this a backpacking gun simply due to the weight. This carbine would be a great gun sitting in a rack on a farm’s UTV.

Another positive for the Ruger PC is the fact it accepts Glock mags. Having your “long” gun accepting the same magazine as your side is a good thing. Cool!

The Ruger PC Carbine is a fun gun to shoot. It’s a solid, reliable firearm that will provide years of service if properly cared for.

    The End Is Near

Maybe….maybe not. With what appears to be a different shitstorm brewing every few days nothing would surprise me. Right now we have record inflation and gas prices, shortages of baby formula, a crashing stock market, and a President who is famous for saying….“We hold these truths to be self-evident: all men and women are created, by the, you know the, you know the thing.”

Worst of all – my favorite snack – Baked Cheetos, are never in stock at the local grocery store. Unacceptable!!

Is the end near? I really don’t see how things can get better from here. I see things over the next 2 years getting much worse. Will there be some miraculous change that reduces prices? A recession may cause deflation. Not the best solution. The massive division in America might be eliminated if we had an alien invasion that threatened the entire world. Maybe.

  • Silver

    Silver

I’ve mentioned before that I’ve had a love/hate relationship with precious metals. Never having the money for gold, silver has been my go-to. With all that is going on in the world and the economic challenges, I see over the next few years silver very well be a savior when it comes to retaining value in your hard-earned dollars. Before the comment section gets blown up “you can’t eat silver” and “my precious metals are lead and brass”  – yup, 100% correct. We are not looking at silver for a complete grid-down, people are starving, end-of-the-world environment. No – silver could be key to retaining purchasing power on the way down to a complete collapse.

As I write this silver has dropped very close to the price I bought it last go around. I usually frequent Money Metals Exchange. I might grab another 20 rounds or maybe some junk silver.

    Maybe.

  • Strawberry Freezer Jam

    Strawberry Freezer Jam

With strawberry picking season arriving across much of the country thought I would share this once again…….

My kids are technically adults now, but they still love freezer jam.  Even though we are apart in miles (at the moment) I still feel the need to perform the same seasonal traditions as if they were still with me.  I would not usually make this delicious treat until late summer in Maine, but here in South Carolina, the strawberries are ripe and ready. When I asked Mr. Rourke if he had ever had strawberry freezer jam he gave me a puzzled look and stated that he had never heard of such a thing! I was again amazed at yet another food he had not tried. To say he is a meat and potato guy is an understatement. As a matter of fact, I just had him try a Big Mac for the first time EVER last week! I would say that he has a 99% approval rating of the food I have him try. The one thing he is not fond of is sushi. I am afraid that is a losing battle, but as long as there are Steak and Sushi joints we both win!

Anyway, back to the freezer jam. This recipe is super easy and is found on the inside of the label of the container of RealFruit Instant Pectin by Ball. I believe you can also find a similar recipe on the inside of a box of Certo. The recipes differ by fruit being used. I have only ever used strawberries but maybe trying something different real soon. I made the jam outside of our camper for more space and because I like being outside. Thanks to our outdoor kitchen I was able to rinse the strawberries after hulling and slicing them.

Supplies: Three mixing bowls, funnel, strainer, potato masher, knife, mason jars, spoons, measuring spoons, and measuring cups.

Ingredients: Strawberries (about 6 quarts of strawberries made 11 8 ounce jars of jam), sugar, RealFruit Instant Pectin

What you see in the picture is double the amount plus some of the strawberries I needed. I was unsure and the extra berries were put to good use in a strawberry upside-down cake that was also delicious and enjoyed by my coworkers.

Cut, wash, strain, and mash strawberries. You will need 1 and 2/3 cup. Set aside.

In a clean bowl add 2/3 cup sugar and 2 tablespoons of pectin and mix together with a spoon.

Add the sugar/pectin mixture to the strawberries a little at a time, stir for 3 minutes until dissolved.

Put in jars using a funnel.

And there you have it! Strawberry Freezer Jam! Store in the freezer until ready to use then keep in the fridge. It is delicious on toast or on a PB & J. Rourke’s favorite way to have it is on the top of Breyer’s Extra Creamy Vanilla Ice Cream.

I know that this may not be a prepper item as it needs to be refrigerated to be stored but I like that it is a quick easy way to use up berries with very few ingredients.

    Have a great summer everyone!

SHTF: Health & Fitness as a Prep

Far too often in the world of preparedness “stuff” is what’s targeted. Lists are made with quantities of guns, ammo, food items, medical supplies, knives, water filters, etc. Rarely is health and fitness even a consideration.

In the video below I offer a few thoughts on this issue.

  • CanCooker Beef Stew

    CanCooker Beef Stew

I published this quite some time ago and I love the CanCooker so much that I thought I’d share it once again. There are many new visitors so for those that missed it the first time……

I got a brand new CanCooker Companion for Christmas. I love to cook and especially love using a crockpot. Although this is not a crockpot in the sense that you can set it and forget it all day, it is however a way to throw everything in one pot with the added bonus of being able to use it on an open fire or grill. In the event of a power outage, it is definitely something you can use to feed your family. It is very similar to an Instapot except it is vented the entire time.

There are 3 different sizes of the Can Cooker: The Companion which holds 1.5 gallons and feeds 6, the CanCooker Jr is 2 gallons and feeds 8, and the CanCooker Original holds up to 4 gallons and feeds up to 20. They all have a non-stick coating and have a variety of accessories that can be purchased separately. The rack that can be placed on the bottom is the next thing I would like so that I can bake things in my CanCooker. It would make a great Valentine’s Day gift (hint, hint)!

For my first time using it I chose a fairly easy recipe from the CanCooker website.

    INGREDIENTS:

    • 2 lbs beef, cut into 1-inch pieces
    • 1 lb potatoes, cut into 1-inch pieces
    • 6 oz portobello mushrooms caps, cut into 1-inch pieces
    • 2 medium onions, cut into wedges
    • 2 cups fresh baby carrots
    • 1 (14-oz) can beef broth
    • 1 (14-oz) can diced tomatoes with Italian herbs
    • 1 cup Burgundy or Pinot Noir wine
    • ½ tsp pepper

    DIRECTIONS:

Spray non-stick cooking spray inside the CanCooker. Add the beef, then the remaining ingredients. Latch lid and cook on medium / low heat for 45 minutes.

Carefully remove the lid, and let stand for a minute. Stir in a mixture* of water and all-purpose flour to thicken the stew to desired consistency.

    Remove from heat and serve!

*Mixture to thicken stew: 3 tbsp water and ¼ cup all-purpose flour.

Note: You can increase or decrease the amount of ingredients in this recipe but please make sure to use at least 12 oz. of liquid.

I did not add the mushrooms ( I am not a picky eater, but those things I cannot stand no matter how many times I try them) and instead of thickening with flour I chose to add 1 cup of rice the last 20 minutes of cooking and it turned out great!

This was so simple, throw everything in and then on to the grill!

I placed it on high heat at first then when it started to steam I turned it down so that I could no longer see the steam as per the instructions on the website. after about 25 -30 minutes I added the rice. This is how it looked when I lifted the cover.

    The finished product….

Needless to say, we are both stuffed and have a lot of leftovers for tomorrow. Cooking at home is not only healthier and cheaper than eating out it’s great practice. Being able to use the tools you have in the event of a SHTF situation is crucial and should be an important part of your prepping!

  • How to Can Bacon

    How to Can Bacon

canning, bacon, how to, food storage, preparedness, prepper, SHTF

NOTE: The following is NOT the recommended method for canning bacon by the USDA.

    line

It’s been a while since I’ve published this. For those who have missed it…..

You will need a large (tall) pressure canner; a rack on feet OR 2 racks and jelly jars with caps and rings;  quart jars with caps and rings, preferably wide-mouth, thick-sliced bacon,  and parchment paper (or paper bags).

Get lots of parchment paper; I buy mine in rolls at Sam’s – much cheaper this way.

Get your jars ready –  quarts will work best for this project, and wide-mouth will be easier to fill than regular mouth jars.

Remember that canning bacon works best with thick-sliced; most others will disintegrate or turn into a large blob of bacon.

Cook your bacon in advance (trust me when I say this works better than packing raw bacon, although, you CAN do that, too!). I microwave ours; but, cook it until it’s “crispy” (or, however you like it cooked). You will have to cook it up again to crisp it when you open the jars, but, that won’t take much “cooking” when you pack it cooked.

Tear off a strip of parchment paper to hold about 8 slices, rolled up; if you get it too short, it doesn’t matter; you’ll just pull off another piece of parchment and keep going. Parchment paper cans just fine; don’t use wax paper – it does not. You CAN use paper bags, if necessary, but, parchment paper works best.

    bacon-is-the-answer-4

Roll your bacon, one cooked strip at a time, in parchment, making sure each strip is rolled and protected from the next strip by paper; if the bacon is wrapped meat-to-meat; it will all stick together after processing and cooling, and you will have one big lump of bacon. Good luck getting that out of the jar!

When you have about 8 strips (you may be able to get more in there!); fold the strips of wrapped bacon in “half”; trim the ends of the parchment, leaving about one (1) inch at either end of the bacon (one inch parchment paper hangover on each end).

GENTLY stuff the folded strips down inside your jars. This is where you will understand why I tell you wide-mouth is best here. You CAN use regular mouth, but, GENTLY work it down, using a spatula, or some such tool. And try not to mutter to yourself too much while stuffing regular mouth jars!

When the jar is filled (it’s o.k. if it’s not “full-full”, as in there are air spaces – that’s normal for this project), wipe jar openings with hot water. Each jar opening needs to be wiped down with VERY hot water and a fresh paper towel; fat is very easy to transfer. Wear protective insulated rubber gloves for handling the hot paper towels, but use one fresh paper towel per jar.

Sterilize your caps and place them; sterilize your rings and place them.

Now, you can process these down in the water, and the result will be “o.k.”. What I find works much better is to DRY CAN THE BACON. This is not running your canner dry – that will ruin your canner; what it means is the jars need to be held ABOVE the water line while processing. (BTW: you can use this method to sterilize tools and instruments, but, that’s another story for another day).

This is where the height of your canner is important, and thus, a bigger canner works better for this project  – make sure you have three (3) inches of clearance between the top of your bacon jars and the top of your canner, when it is sealed. So, when you put in all your racks and your jelly jars of water, or whatever, then your next rack and the jars of bacon, you need 3 inches of clearance at the top.

Make sure you have about three (3) inches of water in your canner; you don’t want to run out of water.

Use a rack with legs that hold the jars above the waterline (good luck finding THAT!), or – do this:

    1.  Place one rack in the bottom of the canner, as you always do.

    2.  Fill at least four (4) jelly jars with water and add lids and rings; you can either process good, clean water (not municipal, fluoride, nano-particle drug water!) and store it as sterile water (an excellent prep item – use for cleaning out wounds, etc.), or, just sacrifice a few caps for the sake of the project without saving the water – you can use the same jelly jars of water as many times as you need. Let them cool a little between loads. You’re going to use the jelly jars to build up the height for processing bacon; YOU CAN NOT DO THIS WITH EMPTY JARS – THEY WILL ‘FLOAT”, AND CRACK DURING PROCESSING. You can not process other food in the jelly jars at the same time, as jelly jars are much smaller than quarts; food processed in a jelly jar for that length of time will turn to mush.

    3.  Place jelly jars of water atop the first rack that is protecting them from bottom of canner.

    4.  Place a second rack on top of jelly jars – this rack can literally lay across them
    5. Set your quarts of bacon atop this SECOND rack. Check your water in canner – you need three (3) inches of water; if water laps bottom of jars, o.k., but you don’t want them immersed in water.

    6.  Seal your canner and fire her up!

    7. On high heat, build your steam; steam it out for 10 minutes, as always (10-minute tornado from the vent pipe);

    8.  Place your counterweight on the vent pipe; bring to 10 lbs. pressure and process @ 10 lbs. for 90 minutes because we’re doing quarts. After 90 minutes at 10 lbs. pressure, turn off heat if gas, remove from heat if electric.

    9.  Allow to cool naturally; remove jars; if wide-mouth, remember, they don’t make the noise regular mouth make when sealing, and they don’t make the same sound when tapped. NEVER TAP THE CENTER OF THE CAP TO TEST – TAP AROUND THE EDGES.

    10.  When thoroughly cooled, wash your jars of bacon in hot, soapy water (fat everywhere!), rinse in hot water, allow jars to thoroughly dry; mark caps with contents and date and store away.

To enjoy: it’s already cooked; you could just set it out in the sun and heat it up, or, eat it straight from the jar. But, Yes! It will be greasy (the paper does absorb a lot of the grease). I like to throw it in a pre-heated cast iron skillet and just “re-crisp” it. It doesn’t take long at all!

This works out great for camping (even though it is in glass). That glass jar comes in handy for storing other leftovers, as well, so, you’ll get more than one use from the jar while traveling.

It’s also convenient to have pre-cooked bacon at the ready for a quick breakfast, casserole, etc.

How long is this good? 5-6 years, if you store it out of direct sunlight, and away from heat sources.

And now you know how to dry can bacon! If you don’t want to dry can, just use the standard method of one rack sitting in the water; all other instructions do not change.

  • The Inflation Crisis Of 2022 Is Now Worse Than Anything That We Experienced During The 1970s

The Inflation Crisis Of 2022 Is Now Worse Than Anything That We Experienced During The 1970s

This post was originally published on a TheEconomicCollapseBlog.com.

Most Americans don’t realize this, but we truly have entered historic territory.  As you will see below, the inflation crisis of 2022 has now escalated to a level that is beyond anything that we experienced during the horrible Jimmy Carter era of the 1970s.  If you are old enough to have been alive back then, you probably remember the constant headlines about inflation.  And you also probably remember that it seemed like the impotent administration in power in Washington was powerless to do anything about it.  In other words, it was a lot like what we are going through today.  Unfortunately for us, this new economic crisis is still only in the very early chapters.

Of course the mainstream media would like us to believe that what we are experiencing today is not even close to what Americans went through in the late 1970s and early 1980s.  According to CNN, the U.S. inflation rate hit a peak of 14.6 percent in the first half of 1980…

The inflation rate hit a record high of 14.6% in March and April of 1980. It helped to lead to Carter’s defeat in that fall’s election. It also led to some significant changes in the US economy.

Compared to that, the numbers we have been given in early 2022 seem rather tame.  On Tuesday, we learned that the official rate of inflation in the U.S. hit 8.5 percent in the month of March…

Prices that consumers pay for everyday items surged in March to their highest levels since the early days of the Reagan administration, according to Labor Department data released Tuesday.

The consumer price index, which measures a wide-ranging basket of goods and services, jumped 8.5% from a year ago on an unadjusted basis, above even the already elevated Dow Jones estimate for 8.4%.

8.5 percent is much lower than 14.6 percent, and so to most people it would seem logical to conclude that we are still a long way from the kind of nightmarish crisis that our nation endured during the waning days of the Carter administration.

    But is that the truth?

In reality, we can’t make a straight comparison between the official rate of inflation in 2022 and the official rate of inflation in 1980.  The way that the inflation rate is calculated has been changed more than 20 times since 1980, and every time it was changed the goal was to make the official rate of inflation appear to be lower.

What we really need is an apples to apples comparison, and fortunately John Williams over at shadowstats.com has done the math for us.

According to Williams, if the inflation rate was still calculated the way that it was back in 1980, the official rate of inflation would be somewhere around 17 percent right now.

    17 percent!

That means that the inflation that we are seeing now is even worse than anything that Americans went through during the Jimmy Carter era.

And government figures for individual categories seem to confirm that inflation is now wildly out of control.  For example, the price of gasoline has risen by 48 percent over the past year…

The price of gasoline rose by 48.0 percent from March 2021 to March 2022, according to numbers released today by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

In just one month—from February to March—the seasonally adjusted price of gasoline went up 18.3 percent.

Vehicle prices have escalated to absurd levels as well.  If you can believe it, the average retail selling price of a used vehicle at CarMax has risen by 39.7 percent in just 12 months…

CarMax experienced a slowdown in fourth-quarter used car sales volume as its average retail selling price jumped 39.7% year-over-year to $29,312, an increase of approximately $8,300 per unit.

And I discussed yesterday, home prices in the United States have jumped 32.6 percent over the past two years.

We have entered a full-blown inflationary nightmare, and the Biden administration is trying to blame Vladimir Putin for it.

Needless to say, that is extremely disingenuous of Biden, because prices were already skyrocketing even before the war in Ukraine started.

But it is true that the war is making economic problems even worse all over the globe, and that isn’t going to end any time soon.

A couple of weeks ago there was a bit of optimism that some sort of a ceasefire agreement could be reached, but now there appears to be no hope that there will be one any time soon.

On Tuesday, Putin told the press that peace talks have reached “a dead end”

Talks with Ukraine have reached “a dead end,” Russian President Vladimir Putin said in fresh Tuesday remarks. “We will not stop military operations in Ukraine until they succeed.” He explained that Ukraine has “deviated” from agreements and any possible prior progress reached during the Istanbul meetings, according to state-run RIA.

The strong remarks aimed at both Kiev and the West were given during a joint presser with his Belarusian counterpart Alexander Lukashenko. He further hailed that the military operations is still going “according to plan,” Bloomberg reports, however while admitting to the domestic population that “Russian logistics and payment systems remain a weakness and the long-term impact of western measures could be more painful.” But he also said the county has withstood the economic “blitzkrieg” from the West.

And Volodymyr Zelensky is now saying that the return of Crimea is a “red line” for him

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky named recognition of the annexation of the Crimea region as one of his red lines for Moscow in any potential peace talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin to end war between the two countries.

Russia annexed the southern region of Crimea in 2014. Russian-backed separatists and forces, as well Ukrainian soldiers, have since been fighting in the eastern region of Ukraine.

Russia will never, ever willingly give Crimea back to Ukraine.

Anyone that thinks otherwise is simply being delusional.

So unless someone changes their tune, this war between Russia and Ukraine is going to keep going until someone achieves total victory.

And that could take a really long time.

Meanwhile, global food supplies will get tighter and tighter, and global economic conditions will continue to rapidly deteriorate.

In other words, the kind of nightmare scenario that I have been warning about for years is now upon us.

And so what happens if another “black swan event” or two hits us later in 2022?

We are so vulnerable right now, and it wouldn’t take much at all to push us over the edge and into an unprecedented worldwide crisis of epic proportions.
