There is no such thing as a handgun that is best for women. Everyone regardless of gender has strengths, weaknesses, and preferences. The old adage….“Just get her a revolver” is both an insult and dangerous. Far too often a woman walks into a gun shop with very little experience and is sold a revolver. I understand the concept, however, every owner of a gun should practice and train so they are capable – no matter the gender. Most women(and men) are perfectly capable of shooting Glocks, 1911’s, Sheilds, etc.
So, why not treat a woman as a shooter rather than an incapable victim? The reason might be as simple as people are resistant to change. Come on guys, how many of us have dreamed of being the hero and saving the damsel in distress? To believe that women are just as capable of defending themselves may play physiological chess with your manhood, but it doesn’t change the fact that they are.
The video below shows a competitive 13-year-old girl demonstrating that almost anyone with sufficient training can be very capable and proficient.
Now that I’ve stirred a hornets nest…bring it!
True…unless of course you pay extra to have pink hand grips..heh.
You’re 100% on the money!! I recommend women hook up with a female firearms instructor, who provides different handguns for them to try. This is the most effective approach, not the “I like it so I’m going to buy it for my wife to use!!”
Ummmm… i am not going to rock the boat since it looks like the post/comments are supporting a individualized good fit for WHOMEVER is looking. Works for me!
Just a heads up to you 1776PatriotsUSA supporters… only 11 more votes needed to pass Rourke’s last site (ModernSurvivalOnline) over at Top Prepper Sites… just saying…..
My primary is and has always been a revolver. With it I have something I know will go bang 5 or 6 times. No safety, no stoppages, failure to feed, stove pipes and if the distance is close it can’t be taken out of battery. The only time I had a stoppage was at the range using someone else’s reloads. I got a squib load and the bullet lodged in the forcing cone. I’ve never, ever had that issue occur with factory ammo.
Revolvers fail far more than people realize, and more difficult to fix when they do! The bottom line is anything made by man is subject to failure! Good article over at USCCA about the myth of revolvers not failing.

As a female, I have to vote for the revolver. It’s all I’ve ever been comfortable using (as far as handguns go) because I have wide hands but short fingers. I’ve never been able to get a good grip on the other handguns I’ve tried.
Also, Rourke, did you change your notification system recently? I haven’t been checking the site because I haven’t got a notice of a new column since the end of May.
