AR-10 experience?

I’m interested in expanding into the realm of AR-10 ownership in 2017. I have zero experience with these and have performed little research as of yet. If any of you out there have experience and first hand knowledge I would be very interested.

Prices today are getting more attractive with the DPMS Oracle rifle running around $800. The advantages to a semi-automatic .308/7.62 are obvious.

I’ve had a Bushmaster xm15-e2s carbine .223 Ar for about 7 years. On sale price was $790 (retailed at about $1100-$1200). I really like it and have had no problems. They have actually decreased in price since then, but have heard rumors that the quality has decreased also, for what that is worth.

I also purchased a Bear Creek Arsenal AR-15 Rifle .223/5.56 NATO w/ M4 Barrel, Flat Top, 30 Round Mag and Hard Case for $479.99 from Classic Firearms and like it too.

Email me off site. It all depends on what use you have in mind.Too much to go into here. Build one! I can stagger you with my 1000M+ AR10 build.

D’s right. Really depends what you want. Like 15’s there’s lots of options. Do you want to reach out and touch? Match barrel, 2 stage trigger and no skimping on your glass. Medium range MBR? Much cheaper. Either way, a high quality locking bolt is a good idea.

Mine is a remington because I got a great deal on it. I like JP because their stuff works. Swapped for their match barrel, Geiselle 2 stage trigger (important), heat dissipater, captured spring system, bipod and monopod with a Horus Falcon on top. Scary accurate one holes all day at a hundred and easy hits to 800 (limit of my range).

We have two late-90s Armalite AR10T 16-inch 2-stage with a variety of fixed and variable scopes.
One gives one-hole groups to 300m.
The other gives 2-inch groups at 600m.

And no, you can’t have them.

I have an AR10 Armalite also. I’d give away my AR15 giving up my AR10. I love it. Smooth shooting. Almost as smooth as the AR15. I have found that the reloads I manufacture with a 168gr HP boat tail, give superior performance over the standard loads.

I have been looking at the AR-10, I am probably going to stay with a bolt action, that’s my preference, at this time. I like how a rifle feals in my hands, by that test I love the Windham Weaponry, it just feals nice, well balanced, and I love the attachment points for sling options. I’m sure the DPMS is an ok rifle, but it feals thrown together, simply my opinion!

You may email me offline as well with any questions, but for the short of it:

When I first delved into AR ownership as a civilian, I wanted an all around rifle that was dependable, could be used effectively for defense and also for hunting any game in North America. I bought a DPMS LR-308 with a 16 inch barrel that was a great all around rifle. It is the same as the Remington R-25 in every aspect except the fancy camo finish and the name. The best upgrade for these in my opinion is to have a VERY HIGH QUALITY OPTIC. Since I wanted an all around rifle, I went with the Trijicon ACOG TA55A, which I got for a steal. It is an expensive optic, but it is well worth it on this rifle. I have not added flashlights, grips, or other nonsense to it, and it has been a great rifle. I did have some feeding issues with the stock steel magazines, but Magpul has helped me with that issue. I thought about putting a binary trigger on it for that extra little bump, but with a 7.62 Nato gun it didn’t add enough so I decided against it. The rifle is heavier, than your standard AR-15, and for the same basic size it holds only 20 rounds instead of 30, but those rounds can do a lot more in my opinion. If I had to carry one gun in a bad situation, I am happy to have it for all it can do.

I have also had an HK G3, and an Armalight, but I have found the DPMS to be a great platform of high quality so I have since gotten rid of them. Please let me know if you have any questions.

I’ve had a DPMS LR-308 with a 16 inch barrel for about 2 years and haven’t had any complaints. Both sons are AR-15/5.56 fans and give me a hard time about weight & cost. But I also have M-14 and .45s so I gave up on weight & cost a long time ago. Don’t plan on running through any jungles at my age.

I have had and used DPMS AR-10’s for the past five years and highly recommend them (use them primarily for deer hunting and really enjoy the experience). DPMS is now owned by Remington and I have never heard of any issues at all with reliability. The DPMS “AR-10” style has over 80% of the market share as opposed to The Armalite AR-10. The parts are not interchangeable so you need to pick one platform and stick with it. I had a good analysis between the two platforms and will try to find and post. Feel free to reach out to me with any specifics. I purchased an Oracle in October and my father used it deer hunting – he got a nice buck and liked it as well. I have a fluted match barrel on one and easily shoot sub-moa groups with the semi-automatic.

I understand that the AR10 varieties don’t swap platform parts like the 5.56 models do .. or as well at least .. I’ve been looking at the PA-10 .. though the DPMS LRT-SASS is attractive .. I think I’ll build one .. I’m just not comfortable with night time hogs and a 5.56 round .. I was also considering a AAC .300 BLK.. I think the.308 is a better deal since my rem 700 HBL is chambered for .308. As I understand it while the .308 with slightly different head space and higher pressure will work in a .308 gun .. the same is not true for an AR NATO gun. Brass thickness for Nato is different as well ..
LR shots I want to reload as even the different lots of LC are either warmer or cooler than the next or former lot.

I currently shoot LC 175 gr Sierra HPBT in my bolt gun .. sub MOA at 600 yds.. a long as I haven’t had too much coffee :)… I’m not competitive with real LR guys .. but all I need is 600 – 800 yds and I’m happy for engagement.

all that to say I’m looking and paying attention to chambers, loads and parts.. I likely will not go OOB so I’ll probably commit to an MFG when I like what I see.. seems doable for $1500.00 – $2000.00 for better than average minus glass .. or NVS
