Prep’s this week?

Note: For some reason this post did not go live Sunday morning as scheduled – whoops!!

Most of my prep’s this week involved fewer tangibles and more “prep” work.

I downloaded an app on my phone and started quizzing for an upcoming ham radio technician test. Long overdue. I do not have a test date yet but so far enjoying the questions and learning a bit. This is more memorization than learning but a step in the right direction either way.

I sold my 1997 Mustang GT Convertible. Main reason was to fund the purchase of night vision equipment and to add to my emergency fund. Right now I am planning on purchasing an ATN X-Sight 3-12 Day/Night Scope. Quite an interesting optic. Currently priced at around $580 I have seen it drop under $500 on Amazon so I am watching and waiting. Would love a PVS-14 but just cannot afford that level of night vision.

I have been working on trying to set up a 20 miles radius communications system. This would allow communications with most all group members. Been working on this for quite a while trying different things and have had no success. Local ham repeater provides what we need but we need a backup.

Talking wth some fellow SurvivalistBoards.com members others have succeeded where I have failed. Using higher power ham radios such as the Yaesu FT-2900R and premium coax along with a yagi 7 element antenna or possibly a Comet GP9.  Antenna height is critical so looking at a way to get it at least 30 feet up on my property. Retreat set up will be much easier.

Purchased 25 pounds of sugar. Need to throw it in some mylar. Also bought a variety of spice and herb mixes at Sam’s.

About halfway through Book 2 Ichabod: Seven Cows, Ugly and Gaunt. Great read.

Your turn.

Loved Book 2 Ichabod, over half way through book 1 299 days. Focused on first aid supplies this week and OTC medicines, got some great ideas from Prepper Ralph. Added 12 and 20 gauge shotgun shells plus a couple of 22 wmr – hard to find! Knife sharpening closed out the week!

    John,

I’ve doing the same; studying for the ham license. The best study guide by far for me has been a freebie at http://www.hamstudy.org The flashcards are really great, and there’s an explanation and/or helpful hints for remembering the correct answer with every question. That info is out of sight unless you want to see it, by clicking in the upper right corner of the question. The flashcards contain every question on all four tests that you could end up with. Also, you can download to your phone and practice anytime, which I do as well. Lastly, there are mock tests to check your progress. I’ve bought several study books previously, but this has been the fastest and most enjoyable to use. Good luck!

No preps of any sort for several weeks now. My fallback bugout location has hit some serious financial snags, courtesy of a third party. My spare car (needed by the boy) was rear-ended and essentially totaled by a woman whose insurance is refusing to accept any responsibility. My job is in an upheaval after 2 people quit with little warning, 2 more are due to be fired, and our oldest employee had a stroke while at work on Friday. My sister-in-law has been given 3 months to live, and my ex-husband has decided to stir up some trouble after being at an unknown location for the last year. Due to the variety of unexpected expenses, we’re dipping heavily into our stores. On a good note, my daughter finally found a part-time job that she enjoys!

Single Mom- you are in my thoughts and prayers. Take a deep breath and make sure you surround yourself with positive energy- White Light of the Lord (or whomever you pray to if you do). My life has been quite challenging lately with health issues and with my husbands two surgeries.
I realized this week how many prep. foods we have used in the past 3 weeks so our daughter went to do big shopping for us to re-stock.
Lets hope your daughter keeps her job . Lightning

Single Mom. Just wanted to let you know that you are in my prayers. God is great and a mighty help in the time of trouble. Draw near to him and He will draw near to you.

Went to a gun show but did not find what I was looking for: Magpul Glock 19 mags, Sig P938 mags for my wife, a slightly bigger molle pouch (to fit Israeli bandage and tourniquet bought from Amazon), and left handed bolt action .308 hunting rifle.

So went to Cabela’s and picked up 2 Magpul glock mags, 300 rounds of .22LR, 100 rounds 9mm for practice with wife’s new Sig P938, 25 shells of 20 ga, and 25 shells of 28 ga. They had one P938 mag too but is was $45 so I passed… will probably have to break down eventually and order her 2-3 online.

Also went to Costco and picked up 50 lbs sugar, 50 lbs flour, a big jar of Italian seasoning and #10 cans of tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, and crushed tomatoes for my wife to can some spaghetti sauce.

It may be wrong to do, but not buying anything preparedness related for the month of August. The other half did take advantage of back to school sales and picked up some sharpie markers, crayons, notebooks, flashcards (make excellent note/range cards) pencils and pens before I told her I wasn’t buying anything this month. This week we’ve kind of been in a purge mode. Went through the freezers, the pantry and tossed everything that was a couple years past ‘best by date’ except for the freeze dried and mylar bagged long term items. Since our diet had changed a good 85% of store bought items we ate & doubled as food storage were just horribly high in carbs and sodium content just sat on the shelf. Also starting on dumping gear/equipment I’ve had since the early 90’s to free up money for newer items including a gen 2+ night vision, or digital night vision and a 200w solar unit with two group 27 deep cycle batteries and a 1000-1200w inverter. Also looking at a 6 person tent, she has already said a firm “NO” to a 5 man USGI arctic tent, Mobiflex crew tent and a USGI GP Small tent, even saying they’d come with a sheepherder type stove in it for winter use. Might go with a Eureka copper canyon 6, or any other options.

I’ve looked at that FLIR nd for thermal it is very attractive at least with its price. I have a need for a weapons mounted NV sight thus the X-Sight. I see a Gen II model that I may go for. The FLIR is pretty limited with its resolution and range.

      1. 3rdMan says:

Looking at the reviews you might get 200 yards out of it at night. Problem though is it usually requires an IR light to reach out that far, which is like a beacon to anyone with NV. If your just hunting hog, should be go to go since I have yet to run into a four legged hog with NV!!!

        1. JR says:

Depends on how dark it is but you are correct any IR use will certainly be seen by another NV user. A possible adaptation is to use remote IR lights to illuminate an area of property while the actual location of the NV stays hidden.

          Thanks

          1. JR says:

Yeah – have never seen it but mounting some large IR lights in trees with remote switches areas could be flooded with “light”. Might work.

Ok, so what I did is finally dropped the hammer on purchasing an AR SBR. I know it will be a while before I get to take it home, but never the less did it!!!!
