Beyond the ever increasing threats existing in the world and the possibility that significant gun control could be realized after the Presidential election – having an AR-15 can be flat out fun! Although there are many models out there costing well over $1000 if funds are a challenge there is still hope.
Just one example of putting together a very useable AR is shopping the sales from Palmetto State Armory. Located in South Carolina they do a massive online business and send out great sales flyers for those on their email list. I have toured their Columbia, SC location and talked to the owner/manager. He was a nice guy. The staff? Not so much. Regardless, their mail order business is excellent.
From a recent sales promotion:
- Blemished PSA Carbine Upper (no BCG) – – ($199.99)
- Complete M4 Lower – – ($199.99)
- Complete Bolt Carrier Group w/Charging Handle – – – ($129.99)
For just over $500 a complete AR can be put together. Shipping and handling as well as any transfer fees are not included.
Putting together an AR in this manner can be done a little at a time and part by part. Stripped lowers/uppers can be purchased and then specific parts added over time. It can be a lot of fun putting together your own gun piece by piece.
If the money is available all at once most manufacturers offer up a budget model between $500 and $600. ClassicFirearms.com is a good source.
Point of the post? No excuses! If you are wanting an AR the time is now.

yup.. at PSA (Palmeto State Armory).. 16″ upper with BCG (std forearm and A2 sight) and CH + Magpul ACS-L lower w/o Backup sight .. $439.00. Lower is a Blem and you can’t tell it .. not at all … a little oil and pop it together done.. The upper comes to your address.. the lower has to go through and FFL.. Call and ck before you select one to find out what they need… I filled out an online form so the dealer and seller can swap and notify for arrival. Customary if yo don’t have a “friend” is $25.00 to $50.00 around here. pretty interesting.. you need not be an armorer to assemble. You only need to know what you woudl need to to clean the thing. If you know absolutely zero .. ck with the range you use for the FFL and see if they have instructors. Safe operations and storage is an absolute must if you are responsible. Effective use is another facet, that woudl require some practice. IMO just getting something and putting it in the closet might not help. They are lite and adjustable as well as well within the realm of smaller frames and handlers. The recoil(kick) is negligible. Just get some eye protection and ear protection and have some fun poking holes in some paper. Or maybe your left over pumpkins:)
Did the exact same thing as gg58 except I didn’t get a blemished lower. Got it all together just fine, only had a little trouble with one pin which I ruined but found another at Ace. This is a first for me and if I can do it you can too. I encourage it!
BTW, installed a red dot on it and the AR fires great.
Hey Rourke GREAT POST! I have built a number of their kits with my family and they have all cycled very well. I have modified, and upgraded as folks are prone to do. After all they are “Barbie for Men” right? I have had a tough time finding a GREAT deal at PSA but there is a shop in Utah named Delta Team tactical that sells kits and I got a keymod HBar kit for what I would pay for the freedom rifle this week. Just another options for my 2nd Amendment brothers and sisters out there.
You are really making it hard not to add a AR pistol with 10.5″ or 11.5″ upper to the arms locker. thanks a lot
yup.. I could build one (keymod).. 7″, 8.5 or 10.5 for less than my other more conventional stuff and share accessories.. and it works for state level concealed permits…
Yup. I’m currently building a PDW. I did an 80% lower and have an Anderson upper with a 7.5″ SS barrel on layaway. I’m going to be rather picky on all the parts that go into this build…. because quality…
It will likely be suppressed.
