From the Desk of John Rourke – February 3rd, 2017

This weekend will be a major one for organization. Group is working on a logistics project. We need inventories from all members and look at holes to fill. Laptop is ready as well as spreadsheet. Time to inventory.

So – I now have a DJI Phantom 3 Standard drone. Yes Patriot Believer – I should have bought the Phantom 3 Advanced. My budget afforded me the Standard and thus far I am very happy.  Hey – this is only my first good one and can already see me getting more in the future.

Here are a couple short video’s. They really do not show the capabilities. More to come:

All video can be seen in real time during flight.

If you are a user of CR123 batteries the best source I have found for them is Amazon. At $15.99 for a dozen great deal.

Curious – if anyone did the visualization exercise mentioned yesterday did you discover anything?

Be safe this weekend.

There are many reasons why so many love their Kindle and Amazon Fire tablets. One huge advantage is you could literally go years without every buying a book to read as there are tons of free eBooks available. Don’t have a Kindle or Fire? No problem. There are apps that can be installed on most any cell phone or computer for free. No excuses!

NOTE: If you see a free Kindle book that your interested in get it now. Prices change often and there is no way to tell how long the book will remain free. Before purchasing a free Kindle book on Amazon make certain the book is still free by making sure the price is $0.00. If it lists a price or says “read for free” or has a price for prime members the book is not free anymore.

Two thoughts about drones, about which I know little. First, looks like a game-changer for preppers…don’t have one and you are severely under prepared for TSHTF. Second, can you add night vision to one? I won’t be getting a drone, though, my wife has never gotten the reality of crumbling America and I have to be content with following the situation and a few security and food preps. It is what it is.

Have you purchased any of these batteries yet? The last time I purchased this type of battery for a low price, they had been removed from factory packaging and thrown into a zip lock bag. I thought it was illegal to mail loose batteries but they did anyway. Also once removed from factory box they have no warranty. I would suggest you order small quantity first. I wound up with a large quantity of loose batteries that I did not know if they were new or used. Send them back if they come loose.

Two things, yes you can add night vision to a Drone, which is absolutely awesome. You are only limited by budget and the weight your drone can carry. The DJI drones are nice, but if you are technically savvy you can build a hex or octo drone that will carry more weight and extend your range using WIFI. If you do this you can get wireless night vision cameras that can transmit to you for real time info. Another option is to look into Thermals. All of that being said, you need to be aware of the many ways people are working on neutralizing drones to “protect their privacy” from those who misuse them.

Okay on Batteries. Rourke, I am curious if you have looked into the rechargeable varieties so that don’t run out should the fecal matter impact the oscillating gas agitator.

“fecal matter impact the oscillating gas agitator” – I like that!!

No brad M I have not messed around with the rechargeable CR123 batteries yet. It’s on my list.

The Phantom has a great operating ceiling. Puts it outside of the range of most nut jobs with a shotgun. For some reason people believe they own the air space above their house at 500 feet. No such right!!!!

    1. StevefromMA says:

Nobody likes be surveilled. Soon people will be mounting firecrackers with electric fuse igniters, then miniHellcat-type missiles on their drones to clear the airspace above their houses.

      You read it here first.

    Nice!

Wait until you try a Pixhawk flight controller and Ardupilot mission planner. Incredible.
Brad M is right–you can build a much more capable (and cheaper) one yourself–all you need is youtube.

can these drones still give the real time data if there is no Wi-Fi or data streaming network up? I’m more and more certain that these are going to be a must have as a force multiplier. and add one to the cabinet.

    1. Brad M says:

      jh,

The only way you can receive any sort of real time intel from a drone, is if you have a wireless feed from it. The ones they design into the drones have a limited range, but using a modified wireless router to extend the range to a wifi enabled tablet or phone is a way to extend your area of observability and thus your intel gathering abilities.

Just my two cents, but you can find info on how to do this via Google or Youtube.

the inventory sounds interesting merely on the fact that many people wont deluge what they have. or, does the group require each family have ‘x’ amount of item a,b,c,d. Back when i was part of a group each family was required to have 30days of specific items at the minimum to be a member.

    1. JR says:

jh – we have some minimum and goal-oriented goals. The need for inventories – and we are a very close group so sharing of information is no problem – is needed to analyze our stocks and fix any weak spots. BTW – these are supplies to be stored at the retreat. As we have plans to all relocated to the retreat in any serious situation or the threat of a serious situation the pre-staged supplies is important. We are almost complete building a large storage shed for said supplies.
