It’s almost hilarious how the MSM is labeling the defeat of the Healthcare Bill as a giant failure for Donald Trump. 65 days into his first term….”It’s all over.” As Obamacare continues to fail I suspect it will only help provide an example of how government needs to stay out of healthcare – and the rest of our lives. Although I would have settled on a “Conservative” version that was an immense improvement over what is in place now – Ryan failed to provide it.
We’ll see what happens up next with tax cuts.

I’m a huge New England Patriots fan. Alright – stop the sneering. Patriots owner Bob Kraft recently mentioned Tom Brady plans to play for another six or seven years.

Dehydrators were recently mentioned. I talked to the wife and she still wants one. There is a good selection HERE over at Mayflower Trading Company.

Was in the discount grocery store Aldi’s and saw they now carry a small selection of freeze dried fruit. These come in a plastic pouch rather than mylar. The fruit could be repackaged with an oxygen absorber and a mylar bag. Fairly cheap. Haven’t bought any yet.
There are many reasons why so many love their Kindle and Amazon Fire tablets. One huge advantage is you could literally go years without every buying a book to read as there are tons of free eBooks available. Don’t have a Kindle or Fire? No problem. NOTE: If you see a free preparedness eBook that you’re interested in get it now. Prices change often and there is no way to tell how long the book will remain free. Before purchasing a free Kindle book on Amazon make certain the book is still free by making sure the price is $0.00. If it lists a price or says “read for free” or has a price for prime members the book is not free anymore.
I really love my Nesco Dehydrator FD 1018. It runs a little more than Nesco’s earlier model. It comes with 8 trays, expandable to 30, and a heavier duty motor. I buy a lot of things using my Amazon Prime membership which helps keeps the shipping cost down. It generally arrives in a few days if being fulfilled through Amazon rather than a third party. Right now Amazon has several available for around $145.00. For those who don’t mind buying through Amazon . . . .
Amazon has the tendency to change pricing on its listings so it pays to visit often and see what it’s going for that day, until you are ready to purchase. There are more expensive dehydrators out there but this has worked well for me in the 20-30 years I have been using the Nesco dryers.
There are other models out there that are designed to make your own jerky. Something for everyone!
We love our Excalibur dehydrator.
Very nice product but totally out of my price range. 🙁
Just a random thought here. Has anyone been watching the contamination level along the Pacific coast caused by the disaster at the Fukashima nuclear plant? Apparently, the explosion at the plant put particles in the air that migrated to the US also. This pushes me to be much more self sufficient and grow more of my own. The info on the dehydrator and Aldi’s is welcomed. Wonder how dehydrated broccoli would taste…NOT.
I am interested to know how long folks keep their dehydrated items before using them. I have some concerns about time spent preparing & dehydrating, versus how long the result can be put away for a SHTF rainy day. I’m considering the tradeoff between store bought metal can, canning, dehydrating and freeze dried.
We dehydrated some fruits that tasted great, and we proceeded to eat them over about 2 weeks. I’m not sure how long they were be good for if we were able to just store them. Thinking about putting back for emergency, is dehydrating time/effort worth it?
Good question Zenblaster and I can only speak in THEORY – not practice. Others will likely chime in. Dehydrating your fruit and then placing in mylar with an oxygen absorber it should keep for years.
Some people also have the “FoodSaver” type vacuum sealers. They usually come with a detachable hose which can be used to vacuum seal canning jars. But you must buy the Vacuum sealing lids (regular and wide mouth options). The lids are used only when doing the vacuum sealing then are removed for another time. I seen posted on other sites that others have had their canning jar sealed foods last for years. The jars can be resealed many times if you have to access the contents frequently. If nothing else, it helps preserve the freshness of the contents. There are helpful videos on youtube.
OT again…do you guys think this would make it through TSA? I don’t travel much but I always want a knife and I hate to buy a cheap pocket knife every time I get somewhere and then leave it, never check bag. It looks like same hard plastic as ” CIA” letter opener I own and never wanted to risk at TSA either. I always thought people were idiots to forget stuff at airport until I left one of those foldable very sharp knives in my wallet and got caught, very uncomfortable situation, let off as crazy paranoid old guy, I think, after big conference of TSA dudes.

StevefromMA – I do not fly so have little knowledge of what would be allowed or not.
StevefromMA, I do fly quite a bit. That would not make it through the carry own check. Most people do not know this, but you can actually take a Rifle or Pistol on a flight. It has to be part of checked in luggage and declared upon check it. There are specifications on the cases they must be held in, but they are allowed.
Also, most states recognize carry conceal licenses from other states. We’ve traveled to some nutty blue states that restrict honest US citizens from protecting themselves. As if criminals walk into a store and say, “Hi. I’m a wanted criminal and.or felon. Can I buy a gun?” What most people don’t know is their dishonest relatives will buy one for them and illegally give it to their criminal relative. Also, the majority of uneducated typical liberals don’t have a clue that a lot of illegal guns are made/modified in other countries. Then smuggled to the US with the intent to be sold on the streets. For example; a ghost gun can be bought from the Philippians for $3,000. No more details need to be given as it’s illegal and if caught will be Federal prison.
These states by the way also had mass shootings take place. So you can better believe I was going to carry mine. Getting a concealed weapon license is a very wise investment.
The only thing I got through was a tactical pen. And that works every time.. no questions in any airport so far.

Thx, will try, was afraid of being hassled about that also.
I hate airport travel these days.

I dehydrate all my herbs and they last until I have used them all, at least a year. I should dry more because everything gets used quickly.
Everyone does understand that freeze dried foods are different from dehydrated foods!
I would think so but good point. Totally different process.
Yes, I’m 100% up on the differences between w process/shelf life/etc having experience with all these methods. I decided its not worth our time/effort to dehydrate. The time frame is not worth it to me. Work and projects outweigh the time to dehydrate or home can, even though we can do both. It’s all tradeoffs but I find store bought canned goods and items on sale at Emergency Essentials to be my best way to get prepared for longer term. my $0.02, your mileage may vary, no electrons were harmed during the writing of this message.
Freeze drying removes almost 100% of the water. Dehydration removes about 95%. Very important difference when talking long term storage.
Nice price on the Aldi fruits, and can be repackaged for 25 year storage.
