From the Desk of John Rourke – April 26th, 2017

Anyone remember the “missile” that was rumored to be fired from a submarine off the coast of California several years ago? Many experts on both sides of the story claim it is a missile while others believe it is an airliner taking off and the appearance is created due to an optical illusion.

At the time tensions with China were on the rise and some theorized that a Chinese sub shot the missile off to show that they were able to get close to the coast.

Likely it was a plane. Why am I bringing this up? Just feel like it.

The United States continues its preparations for a possible conflict with North Korea. A THAAD anti-missile defense system was deployed in South Korea. Kim Jong Un supervised the largest live-fire drill in North Korean history on Wednesday.

Things continue to get interesting.

Although I generally prefer more “modern” survival strategies I am getting more into primitive fire starting. Several types of Ferro rods in now sit on my shelf including two 1/2″ x 6″ rods. These things are beasts and create a brilliant shower of sparks when a tool sharpener is used. Going to do a write up on them shortly.

My “Lightweight AR” project has begun. Just ordered a lightweight, non-polymer stripped lower. More information to come as funds become available. I need a pencil barrel budget-friendly upper. If anyone has any suggestions let me know.

Call me crazy but I just figured it was the same thing they are spraying in the air now days, I never believed it was a missile.

Hey John, seeing as how you like to blow money on building AR platforms, let me ruin your day, or at least your wallet. Do a search on the Echo trigger system from Echotech. I have two of them on order and I do mean on order. They have about a six month waiting list to get one. I do believe it has a great deal of practical value besides the fun factor of simulated full auto fire. The controlled two round burst capability would be very useful in defense use.

Did you mean Fostech Echo Trigger System? I have a friend who has one, but only likes it for the crisp light trigger pull. I have the Franklin Armory BFS, which has a milspec pull of about 6lbs, but love it in Binary.

    John,
Go to: model1sales.com, phone: 903-546-2087. I had ordered a light weight upper without bolt and carrier group, 16″, 1 in 9 twist, I added that I wanted chrome lined barrel and chamber. That made it more expensive, but I think you can find what you want. They will build it the way you want as well. Flattop, with or without front sight, whatever.

Interesting topic. I remember very well when that happened and I wanted an answer. Everyone was freaking out. The very first few seconds thought in my mind was. Was that an enemy launch? But as I reasoned it out and researched multiple “web sites”, (ps, never use TOR at your home or on a pc you built at your home) I came to the this conclusion. It seemed to me that this was our military doing this. Something that sorry *censored* in office at that time, would do.

    – There was not just one launch, but two of them. One around 3am and then the one everyone else saw.

    – Why wasn’t this done in the day for less visibility or both done early like the first when people could not see it?

    – Early enough for a lot of people to see it, but not entire state populations.

    – It seemed as though our military did it. A test to show and demonstrate to other countries our capability.

    – Or on the other hand, like Rourke said. It might have been a foreign power that wanted to demonstrate how pathetic our military has become. After all the bummer, clinton, and the other evil people had whored out America and raped our military on purpose.

    – It seems more likely to me this was done to demonstrate America’s might and to simply scare Americans to cling more to the bummer regime for protection. After all, the redirected air traffic in the area meaning the they knew this missile was coming through. Especially, when the target of the missile was in the the Atoll. That’s Really far away and foreign countries can easily track missile launches/trajectory. Sending a message.

    – Clearly not a jet or hot air balloon. This isn’t the 50’s anymore, (cough, cough, Roswell)

This website is a bit of an alarmist IMO, but from time to time their information is usually close and confirmed what I was finding except every other resource was saying came from a sub in the pacific.

“According to reports, the launch area was the Pacific Missile Test Center located next to Point Mugu, targeting the Kwajalein atoll in the Marshall Islands.

Since LAX traffic has been diverted until Thursday night, it is likely that the US Navy will conduct more such tests. What is unclear is why the test, which was clearly meant to be apparent to millions of people, was conducted so publicly and in such close proximity to some of the most populated US urban centers, when traditionally the military is far more secretive when conducting ballistic missile test”

In fact, during the 80’s Russia almost launched it’s nuclear missiles at us. One night one of Russia’s satellites detected what it thought was an American launch. Thank God the Russian commander in charge hesitated, wanted authentication first, and later determined to be a false detection. The Russian satellite detected the reflection of the sun on it’s panels setting off this false alarm. For making this correct decision they punished the commander severely and he was booted out of the Russian military.

That…was in the 80’s. I’m extremely confident Satellite and missile tracking technology is far more advanced.

As far as China/Korea/Russia…the US? Way out of my hands. I will continue to prep, but if there is a true nuclear war. It’s game over anyway. Again, way out of my hands. No amount of prep or worry can prevent/change the devastation. So then the real question would be..if I may. If a nuclear war does happen. What will happen to you or your loved ones after the death strike? Is this the end of life just to end into some oblivious eternal dark sleep or is there really a heaven? If there is a heaven, which I believe in, and some people may not, will yous guys be with us in eternity?

I would like to clarify I’m Not trying to scare anyone to the alter. That is not…the way I would try to or believe we as Christians should point people to Jesus. I’m only asking from a reasoning causal perspective as if we were talking over coffee in person. Even if you said you weren’t concerned about my point. I would take another sip of that awesome thing called Coffee and talk about other things like the newest movie
    trailers 🙂

    Hey JR,

You said ” Just ordered a lightweight, non-polymer stripped lower. ”

What is that exactly? Polymer is lighter than aluminum, so just wondering what material your alluding to. Ever look at the Windham Weaponry carbon fiber model? 5.85 lbs w/o magazine. Just curious.

    1. JR says:

ralph k – I’ll comment here and also mention it in “From the Desk….” later. The lightweight, non-polymer is a Mag Tactical magnesium lower. It is 35% lighter than aluminum. If you research it you will no doubt here it is crap – just like every other gun and gun component out there depending on the source. For the purpose of this build – which is light weight – it fits the application.

    JR,

Looking at it from Classic Firearms. Have dealt with them in the past for C&R items. They have a great reputation. Looked at some of the negative comments, was mostly about the cerakote finish interfering with some of the hole dimensions, other comments about it breaking after being ‘mortared’ secondary to a jam, although manufacturer of the receiver not stated. Such things happen with aluminum and polymer lowers also if not built up enough in stress areas. Magnesium is very strong, and it looks like this is reinforced at critical areas. Price is very nice. Eager to hear your evaluation on the topic.
What ultimate weight are you aiming for?
