    Food Storage Recipe: SHEEPDOG PIE

    From Rourke: This was previously posted over a year ago. Reactions were mixed, to say the least. I’ll tell you from first-hand experience it’s a great tasting recipe. When looking at food storage items such as canned goods creating flavorful concoctions is so important to keep morale high. While it may look like something your cat did after consuming a large juicy rat…..it’s very tasty.

    OK – on with the recipe.

    When thinking about what types of food that can be stored long-term canned goods are the first thing that comes to mind. Canned items can be mixed together to make a meal or just eaten alone. Stocking up on canned soups, stews or other pasta meals like Chef Boyardee makes perfect sense, especially if you are on the move and not in a set location. However, I still think there is something to be said for having something that resembles a home-cooked meal to lift spirits during difficult times. That is why I have tried to take my regular supper meals and make them out of things that I might have long-term. Normally I use ground beef browned with onions as my meat in Shepherd’s Pie but I thought for this food storage recipe canned pot roast might make a good substitute.

    For the record, this Northern Maine girl had NEVER tasted canned potatoes until I made this meal and I will always prefer my potatoes “uncanned”.  Yes, potatoes are grown in Maine. Maine is not all lobsters and lighthouses. Aroostook County, known as “The County” by Mainers, is located in Northern Maine and is known for its abundance of potato farms. If you ever get a chance to visit you can pick up a bag of locally grown potatoes at a roadside stand between September and October. Just leave money in the box.

    Anyway, this recipe turned out to be a very tasty and filling meal that can easily be made with only a few cans of food.

    What you will need for Sheepdog Pie:

    8×8 inch pan

    Aluminum Foil

    2 cans of Roast Beef

    1 can of corn

    2 cans of sliced potatoes

    Garlic salt and pepper to taste

     

    Directions

    1. Preheat the grill to 375 degrees F

    2. Mash roast beef chunks and sauce with a fork and spread evenly on bottom of 8×8 pan

    3. Drain can of corn and spread evenly over top of roast beef

    4. Drain cans of potatoes and mash or place slices over the top of the corn. I choose to mash the potatoes with a potato masher but I think laying the slices over the top would also be good and faster. I also added some garlic salt and pepper to taste.

     

    5. Cover with tin foil and place on top rack of preheated grill for approximately 30 minutes

     

    6. It’s ready when hot and bubbly.

    If available, top with shredded or parmesan cheese. The homemade banana bread made the meal even better.

    Gates Largest Farmland Owner in United States

    Conspiracy theories are plentiful when it comes to Bill Gates being the largest single farmland owner in the United States.  The reason why Gates has bought so much farmland is plentiful. Many believe that Gates knows there are hard economic times ahead and investing in farmland versus the US dollar is a way for him to maintain his wealth. Others go as far as to say he wants total control over our food supply. His work with GMO’s has many concerned that he will no only control the farms, but also the seeds and genetic make-up of the food itself.

    Just because someone is paranoid doesn’t mean they are wrong. There’s nothing wrong with questioning Gates delving into the farming industry to such a large extent.

    My thoughts?

    This is another concerning piece of the puzzle that when all the pieces start coming together show the present day we live in and a very uncertain future we are heading towards. Food – above all – is the most important prep. Between the climate issues over the last few years and large corporation’s involvement in farming, it certainly makes sense to store more food and grow your own food as much as possible.

    Approaching the SHTF We All Prepare For: Over the last several decades people have predicted when the SHTF and what it would look like. They’ve all been wrong(including me). Not much surprises me anymore. Seems to me that ALL the writings on the wall that we are fast approaching “those times” we have wondered about. Inflation, massive federal debt, government corruption, societal decay, supply chain interruptions, massive increases in crime, division in the populace, cancel culture, wokeism, etc. – everything is pointing towards end times growing near.

    Silver. I’ve contemplated getting into silver again. As an inflation hedge silver SHOULD be a way to protect the buying power of money in these economic challenges. My hesitation is the current prices and premiums on silver.

    It’s very likely a portion of my investment savings is going to go to the precious metal very soon.  I’ll update.

    A tourniquet is one of the most important items to have in any IFAK(individual first aid kit) or on a Kit(tactical loadout). For that matter inclusion in a vehicle is a great idea as you never know when an auto accident may occur and someone needs help.

    Please Note: If you are under fire, use the “high and tight” method (over clothes and very high on the extremity). When safe, apply TQ above and closer to the wound (usually 2-3″). Apply a back-up tourniquet above the first one if rebleeding is noted or retighten 1st TQ if no backup available.

    We are heading for a new great depression, but most of us are completely unaware. If you do not pay attention and look for specific news it’s easy to just assume everything’s OK.  It’s not. The world is simply getting crazier day by day. Keeping up with the pieces of the puzzle is not easy.

    Here are a few pieces:

    • Inflation(being underreported by the government) continues to increase week after week.
    • Climate Change and White Supremecy are considered the biggest threats to the United States by the Biden administration.
    • National deficits are growing and taking us to a Federal Debt of $30 trillion.
    • The USD is losing value basically creating a pay decrease for all Americans.
    • Continued rising tensions with China and Russia.
    • Several cyberattacks have occurred hitting different industries. The threat from cybercrimes is increasing and could play a very large role in a future SHTF event.
    • It’s become blatantly obvious that the government has taken full advantage of COVID to push forth agendas which they normally wouldn’t.
    • Anti-police activity which led to defunding of police departments across the nation is reeling as crime spikes.
    • Thefts are up as well as rapes, murders, and other violent crimes. Reports are coming in that these crimes are occurring in areas that typically are peaceful.
    • Illegal drug use is up and homelessness is as well.
    • Division amongst citizens continues to grow with many sides becoming more organized, decisive, and radical.
    • Supply chain issues continue across numerous industries and for a variety of reasons.
    • Illegal immigration continues to trend upwards as the current Administration welcomes those crossing the border.
    • Firearm purchases continue to be strong among those favorable to the 2nd Amendment as well as those typically NOT in favor of guns.

    Many have predicted economic collapse and other calamities for years. Time and time again accurately predicting the future is shown to be extremely difficult, well, pretty much impossible. What can be done is to look at as many data points as possible and come to a consensus as to the direction of the data points. While timing is difficult to determine I’ll say the indicators are not good. The pieces of the puzzle can just now start to be assembled and the corresponding picture is horrific.

    We’re going to have some fun designing and building a survival kit together and we are well on our way. Here is Part 9 in the series where each week we will vote on a new item(s) to add to the kit and see the results from the previous week.

    Back when I first got involved in preparedness there were lots of discussions about “survival kits.” Nowadays, there are INCH bags, Bug Out bags, Get Home bags, and many more. I may be a bit old school but I’m going back to my roots and survival kit it is.

    Here’s the bag we started with: The Paratus 3-Day Operator’s Pack. The Paratus is a popular pack and often considered the “Prepper’s Backpack” as it is high quality, rugged, extremely versatile, and budget-friendly. Cost is phenomenal at well under $100.

     

    Here’s what we’re going to do. Every week(or so) I’ll post a category of products along with several choices to choose from. Everyone will vote on which items to put in the bag. When the voting is over I’ll buy the selected item and add it to the bag. With each new week, I’ll update what we’ve put in the bag until the kit is completed.

    When to Close a Wound

    There are many injuries that a medic will face in a survival scenario, and a common and potentially life-threatening one occurs whenever the skin is broken. Your skin is your body’s armor; when it is breached, infectious organisms enter a highway which can transport them to just about any part of the body. Therefore, it makes common sense that you’d want to close that breach to speed healing and lock out infection. Indeed, that’s exactly what happens thousands of times daily in emergency rooms in normal times.

    The off-grid medic has a dilemma, however: Most wounds in survival will be dirty, and providing a sterile environment for a surgical procedure is a difficult challenge. You could make the work area as clean as possible, but sterile? Not likely. As such, you should wisely choose what wounds should be closed and what wounds should be left open.

    Many medics can’t imagine not closing a tear or cut in the skin (called a “laceration”), but it’s a reasonable way to deal with contaminated wounds in situations where you can’t assure a sterile or even clean, field on which to work. Lacerations that are kept open must be dressed and cleaned regularly until they’re fully healed.

    Open wounds heal through a process called “granulation”, where new tissue forms at the base and sides until the defect in the skin is fully healed. Essentially, “from the bottom up”. This tissue is somewhat granular in appearance, hence the name.

    “To Close or Not To Close?”

    To paraphrase Hamlet, “To close or not to close? That is the question!” To answer this questions, we must examine what our goals are in closing a wound. Among other reasons, you close wounds to:

    • Repair the defect in the body’s armor, thus preventing infection in a clean wound.
    • Accelerate the healing process. Wound edges that are touching heal faster than those that aren’t.
    • Decrease scarring. Scarring is less of an issue in survival, unless the scar would, say, limit the range of motion of a joint in extremity.

    A note about bleeding: Although closing a wound may apply pressure to bleeding areas, it is not a substitute for hemorrhage control, also known as “hemostasis” before closure. Consider the application of direct pressure first on the bleeding area, a method that succeeds in many cases. Also, for major blood loss, have tourniquets, hemostatic agents like Celox or Quikclot, and pressure dressings as part of your medical storage.

    So what factors come into play when deciding to close a wound or to keep it open? Consider keeping the wound open in these circumstances:

    The wound is dirty. Are the circumstances suspicious for contamination? In survival scenarios, the answer is often yes. In austere environments, even WHO (the World Health Organization) agrees that the safest course of action is to keep it open.

    Here are some circumstances where wounds should be kept open:

    • The wound is infected. Infected wounds have a certain appearance: They are red, swollen (sometimes appearing “shiny”), warm to the touch, and may drain pus.
    • The wound is colonized (infected but not yet showing signs). Even the air has bacteria; you can expect a wound to be colonized within 6-8 hours or so.
    • There is dead tissue in the wound. This tissue won’t bleed when it is cut and often appears discolored or black. No closure should be performed without removing dead tissue first (a procedure known as “debridement”).
    • Puncture wounds, especially from mammalian (including human) bites have lots of bacteria and shouldn’t be closed. Interestingly, snake bites become infected less often than, say, cat or dog bites, but don’t close them either.
    • The wound edges are so far apart that closing them would cause undue pressure. This occurs with injuries like “avulsions”, where entire areas of tissue are missing.

    Here are situations where you should consider closing the wound:

    • You’re certain the wound is clean. This usually requires witnessing the injury as it happens.
    • The wound has been open less than 6-8 hours.
    • The laceration is long or deep enough to penetrate the entire thickness of the skin. A deep wound would allow you to see underlying tissue such as subcutaneous fat.
    • The wound is located over a joint. A moving part, such as the knee, will constantly stress a wound and prevent it from closing in by itself.
    • The wound gapes open loosely, suggesting that it can be closed without undue pressure on the skin (and won’t close at all without your intervention).

    Life happens. Well, that’s a nice way of putting it. I regularly counsel people who are going through a rough spot and I repeatedly tell them, “Just keep moving forward. Just keep moving forward.” That’s a phrase I’ve said daily for more than 3 years as my life changed in more ways than I care to remember.

    These past couple of weeks have been very stressful as work has been nuts. There are a ton of projects that are ongoing, being developed, and just need attention. Resources are scarce. We are also struggling to maintain production quotas as people just don’t seem to want to work anymore. Crazy.

    So, I’m sitting here in my camper chatting with YOU and watching CON-AIR. Never been much of a fan of Nicholas Cage, but I like this movie.

    Maine Prepper Girl is not feeling well. I fetched her some bread for toast and some saltine crackers. Neck rub to help with the headache. Yeah – I’m awesome.

    Oh – gotta go check the clothes in the dryer. That’s about 100 yards away across the campground. Be right back……

Luckily for most of them, it appears that the chances of success are fairly low at least until the mid-terms. We shall see.

    PEZ: PEZ was my favorite candy as a kid. As I sit here on the couch in the camper there are no less than THREE Pez dispensers within reach of me. Yeah – I’m 51. Age ain’t nuthin but a number!!

    BUSINESS: I’ve been developing a store as part of 1776PatriotUSA.com. I’ve been hesitant to do this previously but if I am to grow the website – and the business part of it – a store is a natural part. Right now the Sawyer Bucket Kit’s are a major part. I’ve added some information USB’s which I’ve spent hours and hours putting together. My new Minuteman IFAK is something I’m really proud of. I’m working on a variety of products including digital downloadable items. BUT, guess what? Many digital items – some rare and expensive elsewhere – are available in the membership area.

    Stocking Up On Magazines?

    For over a year the firearms market has been a rollercoaster ride. The threat of civil unrest spreading across the country with COVID right beside it drove people to gun shops sending prices upwards and supplies down. Ammunition came under high demand and prices skyrocketed.

    Everyone ignored magazines(for the most part).

    Market conditions have certainly leveled out and prices have improved. Even with an anti-gun White House and Left-controlled Congress, things are heading in the direction of normal, though we are still quite a ways. Once the ramblings of serious gun control begin prices will likely get back on that rollercoaster once again.

    Back to magazines. Anti-gunners have long targeted “high capacity magazines” frequently professing legislation that limits magazine capacity to 10 rounds(or less). Right now as of this writing magazines are available in large quantities and at very good prices. A few months ago I purchased an additional 200 AR magazines at rock-bottom prices. Why? The main reason was to secure an ample supply stream that would suffice for myself and others should I need to equip them.

    When, and I do believe it’s when not if – severe gun control is implemented there is no doubt magazines will play a major role. When this occurs what you have at the time may be all you can get. No more. Seems to me it would be a good idea to snatch up some extra mags for any magazine-fed firearms you have soon.

    A couple suggestions on where to go to stock up:

    1. Global Ordnance – they are a growing industry leader of firearms and firearms accessories including magazines.
    2. Palmetto State Armory – watch their incredible sales for great prices on package deals.
    3. Your local gun shop.

    My kids are technically adults now, but they still love freezer jam.  Even though we are apart in miles (at the moment) I still feel the need to perform the same seasonal traditions as if they were still with me.  I would not usually make this delicious treat until late summer in Maine, but here in South Carolina, the strawberries are ripe and ready. When I asked Mr. Rourke if he had ever had strawberry freezer jam he gave me a puzzled look and stated that he had never heard of such a thing! I was again amazed at yet another food he had not tried. To say he is a meat and potato guy is an understatement. As a matter of fact, I just had him try a Big Mac for the first time EVER last week! I would say that he has a 99% approval rating of the food I have him try. The one thing he is not fond of is sushi. I am afraid that is a losing battle, but as long as there are Steak and Sushi joints we both win!

    Anyway, back to the freezer jam. This recipe is super easy and is found on the inside of the label of the container of RealFruit Instant Pectin by Ball. I believe you can also find a similar recipe on the inside of a box of Certo. The recipes differ by fruit being used. I have only ever used strawberries but maybe trying something different real soon. I made the jam outside of our camper for more space and because I like being outside. Thanks to our outdoor kitchen I was able to rinse the strawberries after hulling and slicing them.

    Supplies: Three mixing bowls, funnel, strainer, potato masher, knife, mason jars, spoons, measuring spoons, and measuring cups.

    Ingredients: Strawberries (about 6 quarts of strawberries made 11 8 ounce jars of jam), sugar, RealFruit Instant Pectin

    What you see in the picture is double the amount plus some of the strawberries I needed. I was unsure and the extra berries were put to good use in a strawberry upside-down cake that was also delicious and enjoyed by my coworkers.

    Cut, wash, strain, and mash strawberries. You will need 1 and 2/3 cup. Set aside.

    In a clean bowl add 2/3 cup sugar and 2 tablespoons of pectin and mix together with a spoon.

    Add the sugar/pectin mixture to the strawberries a little at a time, stir for 3 minutes until dissolved.

     

    Put in jars using a funnel.

    And there you have it! Strawberry Freezer Jam! Store in the freezer until ready to use then keep in the fridge. It is delicious on toast or on a PB & J. Rourke’s favorite way to have it is on the top of Breyer’s Extra Creamy Vanilla Ice Cream.

    I know that this may not be a prepper item as it needs to be refrigerated to be stored but I like that it is a quick easy way to use up berries with very few ingredients.

    I just started writing a new book. Unlike my last, this one I’m planning the storyline, the characters, subplots, settings, and timelines. The story is to take place in the Spring of 2022 in the midst of continued inflation, political corruption, record deficits, governmental overreach, and social divide. Events transpire that shape the future of this country.

    “Here’s a hint from the book.”

    Writing in this manner requires thinking ahead and “predicting” the future. Sure, the book is fiction, but, in an effort to make it as realistic as possible I’m considering what might happen, could happen, and in some cases what is likely to occur. Predicting the future is certainly an effort in futility as there are far too many variables to consider. As part of developing storylines, substantial research is being conducted.

    So – another prepper fiction book? There’s a ton of them. I’ll add one to the mix and hopefully create something just a bit different.

    Knives. Probably not much that will get people debating more than knives – except maybe guns.

    I’ve never had much of a knife fetish, though I have quite a few. I’m more of a collector than someone who purposely buys knives with a specific job or task in mind. I like multi-tools and for the most part, have stuck with Gerber. They have served me well. I used a Gerber Suspension for years at one job until they banned “edged tools” from the plant.

    I have an old Japanese hollow handle knife that was a copy of the version John Rambo carried in First Blood. I know it’s more of a mantlepiece than a real tool to be relied upon, but hey – can’t I have an action fantasy now and then?

    I picked up a Gerber BMF survival knife a few years ago. This is a knife I absolutely loved and owned one back in the early 90’s when it was in production. As it sometimes happens I sold it due to being in need of money.  I was determined to get another and now that I have one – it will stay with me.

    I bought several of the Chinese ESEE 3 copies from a company called CIMA. These are super high quality and were a great deal at $20. I have two left and have one strapped to my plate carrier. I love the size, weight, and shape of it. I highly recommend the ESEE 3 fixed blade as it is identical and all around just about perfect for most tasks except batoning.

    Over the years I’ve had my hands on many knives. The Bear Grylls Survival Knife is one I expected to be a piece of crap. Turned out it was really nice. Good build quality, durable. Early models had the pommel fall off during heavy use. I pounded the dog crap out of my later model and it held up no problem. The sharpener worked well. While the coloring makes it look toy-like, it’s built similar to the Gerber line of knives such as the Gerber LMF II.

    So many knives, so little money….LOL.

    Biden’s $6 Trillion Socialist Budget Will Cause Even More Inflation And Even More Shortages

    If you are enjoying the ride on the highway to hyperinflation, then you are going to absolutely love Joe Biden’s new budget.  Instead of realizing the mistakes that he has made and reversing course, Biden has decided that now is the time to push the accelerator to the floor.  That means that a lot more inflation is on the way, and I am encouraging all of my readers to do what they can to get prepared for that.  In my latest book, I sound the alarm about what hyperinflation will eventually do to our economy.  We are literally in the process of becoming Venezuela, and most Americans have absolutely no idea how horrific that will be.  In Venezuela today, almost everyone is a millionaire, but just about everyone is also living in poverty because the money is absolutely worthless.  We don’t want to end up like that, but that is the road that we are on.

    While he was still in the White House, President Trump’s proposed budget for 2021 was $4.8 trillion.  That is an extremely high number, but Joe Biden’s new budget for 2021 is actually 25 percent larger…

    The proposal represents a 25 percent increase over what former President Donald Trump proposed in his final budget – in a year that would be upended by the coronavirus.

    The spending levels would continue on an upward trajectory, hitting $8.2 trillion at the end of a decade, according to detailed top-line numbers leaked to the New York Times.

    I could sit here all day and still probably not be able to come up with sufficient words to describe how insane it would be for the U.S. government to spend 6 trillion dollars in a single year.

    According to Biden, his new tax increases will offset part of the new spending, but even his own projections show us running trillion dollar deficits long into the future…

    The budget would have the nation continue running deficits of more than $1 trillion, a level it already topped with the onset of the pandemic – with estimated annual deficits of $1.3 trillion amid enacted and proposed federal programs.

    Of course these sorts of projections are usually way too optimistic.

    In my estimation, Biden’s plan would have us facing deficits of at least two trillion dollars per year throughout his presidency and beyond.

    We can’t keep doing this to our children and our grandchildren.  Already, borrowing and spending giant mountains of money that we do not have has resulted in the worst stretch of inflation since the Jimmy Carter years of the 1970s.

    Larry Summers was the former director of the National Economic Council under Barack Obama, and even he is warning that big time inflation is coming…

    He told a CoinDesk conference: ‘We’re taking very substantial risks on the inflation side.

    ‘I think policy is rather overdoing it. The sense of serenity and complacency being projected by the economic policymakers, that this is all something that can easily be managed, is misplaced,’ he added.

    When even Larry Summers is sounding the alarm, you know that it must be really late in the game.

    As I have detailed in numerous recent articles, prices are absolutely exploding all over the nation right now.  And today we learned that one prominent analyst is claiming that “US inflation data surprises are at their highest in the 20-year history of the series”…

    As we noted over the weekend, positive US data surprises seem to be normalizing (i.e. the Citi US econ surprise index has flatlined) due to a combination of analysts catching up with the prior stronger pace of growth, and also due to some evidence that the rate of change of US growth is peaking out (JPMorgan disagrees).

    However as DB’s equity strategist Parag Thatte points out in his latest positioning piece, “US inflation data surprises are at their highest in the 20-year history of the series with the last 10 data points almost ‘off the chart’.“

    We should be taking emergency measures to get inflation under control, but instead Joe Biden has decided that this is the perfect time for a spending spree.

    Inflation is one of the hallmarks of a socialist economy, and another thing that we commonly see in socialist systems are shortages.

    At this moment, we are witnessing the most severe shortages that the U.S. has experienced in my entire lifetime.  As I discussed the other day, Bloomberg is reporting that “the world economy is suddenly running low on everything”.

    When there are way too many dollars chasing way too few goods and services, it is inevitable that shortages will happen.  And we are being told to expect that some of the shortages will get even worse in the months ahead.  In fact, CNN is telling us to expect very serious gasoline shortages this summer…

    And that could be the least of the problems for the those taking to the highways for summer vacations. The gas shortages experienced earlier this month when a key pipeline shut down could once again be on the horizon, according to experts.

    This time, the squeeze could be triggered by the lack of tank truck drivers to deliver the fuel, and a repeat of panic buying by travelers topping off their tanks.

    Meanwhile, economic conditions continue to deteriorate for those at the bottom of the food chain.

    Earlier today, an article about current economic conditions in New York City really struck an emotional chord with me…

    In Times Square, the most densely tourist-populated place in the United States, a mentally disturbed man known as Mr. Kim begs cops to kill him. ‘I want to die. You have a gun? Shoot,’ he pleads. After the officers demur, he picks up a plank of wood and starts smashing it against the Pele soccer shop.

    On Sutton Place, one of the most affluent residential areas in the city, a lone man squats on the sidewalk, intently reading a paperback novel next to a shopping cart that contains his worldly goods. He begs for cash with a sign saying he has lost everything. ‘Trying to survive,’ it adds.

    Joe Biden may think that he is going to bring the U.S. economy back to life with all of the borrowing and spending that he is doing, but the truth is that it is just going to make our long-term problems even worse.

    Unfortunately, a lot of our long-term problems are rapidly becoming short-term problems, and that is not good news for any of us.

    Writer’s block happens from time to time and I struggle to come with anything to share. Favorite pie? Apple. Favorite ice cream? Vanilla. Favorite pizza? All of it.

    I shared some stuff. Whoop!!!!

    The US Debt Clock is quickly ticking towards $29 trillion dollars. With the Biden administration looking at a $7 trillion budget there is little doubt that $30 trillion total debt is right around the corner. What’s interesting is the website – USDebtClock.org has a built-in time machine. Yes – you can actually click a button and time travel to 2025 and see what the national debt will be at that time. Care to gander a guess?

    $50 trillion dollars                                   

    Yeah – $50 trillion. Insanity. Those of us who have had concerns about economic collapse, inflation, hyperinflation – and the entire breakdown of society when all that occurs may not have to wait long. 2025 is right around the corner. Another eye-opening prediction is that in 4 short years the total amount of money in circulation will grow by more than 100%.

    Folks – many of us have been predicting when the SHTF and what will cause it. I’ll continue to go with economic collapse and when? Sometime between NOW and THEN. Yeah – specific dates I don’t know and neither does anyone else, but, I do know it’s inevitable.

    HOPE

    Is there hope? To save the “system”? No. While it’s certainly patriotic to talk about how great the idea of these United States is – it’s well past saving. The hope is directly related to actions that WE take for OURSELVES and those we LOVE. I’m going to going to pound into people’s heads the idea of the American Exit Strategy. I’m in the middle of mine(described in the Patriot Brigade Member Area). If not familiar – getting out of debt, moving out into the woods/country, and living as independently as possible.

    I sincerely hope that you and I will continue to share thoughts and ideas as we continue towards what awaits us. We can get through as much of this as possible together.

    We’re going to have some fun designing and building a survival kit together. Here is Part 8 in the series where each week we will vote on a new item(s) to add to the kit and see the results from the previous week.

    Back when I first got involved in preparedness there were lots of discussions about “survival kits.” Nowadays, there are INCH bags, Bug Out bags, Get Home bags, and many more. I may be a bit old school but I’m going back to my roots and survival kit it is.

    Here’s the bag we started with: The Paratus 3-Day Operator’s Pack. The Paratus is a popular pack and often considered the “Prepper’s Backpack” as it is high quality, rugged, extremely versatile, and budget-friendly. Cost is phenomenal at well under $100.

    It’s difficult to imagine a time when the unpredictability of the future is so uncertain and unpredictable. I hate the saying, “To be honest”, but – to be honest, I’m struggling with the insane politics, increasing inflation, crazy ammo prices, guns sold out – and what the hell is going to happen to this country over just the next couple of years.

    What I know is the preparedness lifestyle has never made more sense than right now. I know a few on here are fairly new to preparedness. There IS still time, however, if you’re just starting out you’ve got to ramp things up.

    For those who have been preparing for a while now is the time to shore things up. What do I mean? Simply imagine if RIGHT NOW as you are reading this you cannot purchase ANYTHING. Whatever you have is what you have.

    What would you wish over the coming weeks you had bought more of?

    Here are some simple things that are inexpensive but so valuable:

    – Food: Eat what you store and store what you eat

    – Bic lighters(or the cheaper variety)

    – 2.5 and 5 gallon gas containers FILLED

    – cold and flu medicine(’tis the season in a few months)

    – trash bags

    – sanitation supplies: cleaners, glass cleaner, disinfectant, bleach, wet-wipes, toilet paper, shampoo, etc.

    – Zip-Loc bags(fantastic storage)

    – tarps

    – cordage: paracord is overrated but still worth having. Get rope, bankline, twine, string, etc.

    – Knife – a Mora is well worth the money

    – batteries

    – flashlights(there are things that go bump in the night)

    As stated – imagine that RIGHT NOW you have to survive and move forward with whatever you have. What’s missing? What should you have stocked up on more?

    My buddy “John Hancock” and I chat preparedness almost daily. We send audio messages back and forth and some of these discussions get pretty deep. Over the past several years I’ve done my best to educate him and correct every one of his opinions that are different than mine(meaning he’s wrong). I’d say his IQ has jumped up at least 25 points due to these talks.

    I’m sure you can tell we joke around quite a bit.

    One of the recent discussions centered around getting back to basics. Interestingly we both came to the realization that most people fail to truly place their priorities in the right places when it comes to preparedness. Take the old adage, “Beans, Bullets, and Band-Aids.” See that very first word ‘beans’? It’s first for a reason. Food(and H2O) is incredibly important. For those preparing for a multi-year event, how many year’s worth of food do you have right now? If the answer is in months this is what we are talking about.

    Food isn’t sexy nor is it very exciting. People don’t mount food buckets on their wall or pull out their #10 cans of freeze-dried Chili Mac and mount the latest and greatest can opener on the side via a picatinny rail. No – food doesn’t get the attention it deserves.

    When the fecal matter comes in contact with the rotating impellers that $1800 Ruger Precision rifle is really nice but many will be wishing they spent $400 on a Ruger American and purchased $1400 worth of……you guessed it: FOOD!!

    No one knows exactly what is going to happen nor when. It certainly seems with each passing day things are getting more $%&@’d up than a soup sandwich. The good news is we have some time. Those of us(yes me included) that need to get back to the basics and get straight need to do so NOW. Later will arrive sooner than you think and it may involve a zombie chewing on your left ankle.

    Recipe: Foil Wrapped Garlic Steak & Potato

    The last time I posted this recipe someone sent a message and was pissed off because they made it and it did not meet their expectations. Disclaimer: It might be better, or worse than what you expect. “Such as life.”

    This oven or grill steak and potato recipe offers up some savory flavors and can be easily modified depending upon available ingredients.

    Growing up in a meat and potato family(and pasta every Wednesday), this recipe has become a frequent offering at the dinner table.

    Juicy, tender steak with potatoes and an assortment of flavorings including GARLIC  – can’t get much better.

    A few notes:

    • The rarer you desire the steak to be the larger the pieces should be cut.
    • Generally, chunks should be between 1″ – 2″ cubes.
    • Total cook time should be around 20 – 30 minutes.

     

    Ingredients

    • 2-2½ pounds top sirloin steak, trimmed of fat and cut into cubes
    • 1 pound baby yellow potatoes, quartered or halved
    • 3 tablespoons olive oil
    • salt and pepper, to taste
    • 1 tablespoon minced garlic
    • 1 teaspoon onion powder
    • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
    • 1 teaspoon dried parsley
    • 1 teaspoon dried thyme

    Note: Weber CHOP ‘N STEAK Seasoning is a multi-use seasoning that can be used if all flavoring ingredients are unavailable.

     

    Instructions

    1. Combine potatoes, steak, olive oil, salt, pepper, garlic, and seasonings in a large bowl.
    2. Tear off four 12 x 12-inch sheets of aluminum foil or 12 x 24 inch to double wrap. Divide steak and potatoes between all four sheets and wrap the foil tightly.
    3. Grill over high heat for approx 20-25 minutes or bake in oven at 425 degrees for 20-25 minutes.
    4. Additional spices can be added by opening the foil packets and add as desired.
     I like boiling or microwaving my potatoes a bit prior to grilling to make sure they are completely done when the steak reaches perfection.

    Burns suck.

    Years ago I had a job where I had to use a soldering iron frequently. Via some juvenile antics by fellow employees hand and finger burns were common. Back then I discovered Water-Jel.
