Bugging Out: Thoughts on Tires

I have a new truck(new to me) and looking at putting a set of tires on it. This is a 2019 RAM 1500 Classic Warlock 4×4. I’m living in a camper near my work right now and purchased the truck as I needed a reliable method of pulling the camper if things go FUBAR. I’ve been covering this over on Patreon BTW.

Back to the tires. As part of my bugout plan not only do I need to get a set of good tires – I need extra tires. No – not simply a spare. I feel the need to have at least two full-size tires is important. Right now I have a full-size spare but it is still a low mileage, low-speed temporary tire. I want a full-size dependable tire as a spare. Tires are so critical to a vehicle that losing a couple tires once the excrement hits the air distribution device would be catastrophic. My plan? Two full-size spares for the truck, and two for the camper.

Right now I’m looking at Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac’s for the truck.

Just a thought. Tires are not considered nearly enough as important as they are.

    I made the mistake of buying Goodyear tires instead of Michelin a couple of sets ago. I have gotten MUCH better wear out of the Michelins. They also ride much better. I have had that same experience in my Nissan Frontier and my Dodge Ram 2500.

    Several of my hunting buddies were not too impressed with the stock Duratracs that came on their Rebels, but usually OEM tires are of a lesser quality than their aftermarket “twins”. I’ve used most of the major brands and my favorite for now are the Falken Wildpeaks A/T. Especially for the cost. While I haven’t been rock crawling with them, they’ve exceeded my expectations in average mud, air downed at the beach, towing, going anywhere needed around the farm and are quiet and long lasting when commuting. Falken also makes a Wildpeak M/T if you’re looking for something more aggresive. The Nitto Ridge Grapplers are all the rage right now in the truck forums, but I’ve never personally owned a set. Good luck with the search and the advice on having two full sized spares.

      I had a set of Duratracs on my Jeep and loved them. This is one of the reasons I’m looking at them. I got great mileage as well with great offroad traction.

    I have a 2500 Dodge Diesel. I currently have 8-ply Hankook tires on it. I hate them. I will be replacing them, before their time, with Michelin 10-plys, what I’ve had on my other trucks and what this one had on it when I bought them. You can get cheaper tires, but these Michelin’s you can count on.

    Had a set of Goodyear Wranglers on my jeep years ago, served me better than Toyos (tread compound to hard- not good in snow). Have had a set of BF Goodriches on my 2005 Ram 3500, good wear, good mileage. Not bad but you gotta keep em rotated. For what it’s worth dept, Goodyear has swallowed the “woke – politically correct” pill big time, and will not allow any sort of conservative message clothing on company property, but BLM and other “progressive” clothing is ignored. So I have read……

    Twelve months ago, I mounted four on my 1996 Dodge Cummins 4×4.
    295×16.
    I needed a couple-three months to adjust to their wandering.
    They are doing fine.

    I admit it… I went overboard.
    Prior to acquiring new tires a year ago, I acquired three (3) matching spare wheels.
    We mounted my used tires on the spare wheels, giving me a barely-adequate back-up.

    My daughter needed snow tires for her vehicle this year but she decided to BOYCOTT
    Goodyear because they were so down on Trump and would not let their employees wear Trump anything but the employees could wear BLM etc. Just saying.
    I agree Rourke though that tires a VERY important. Arlene

    I used to run Goodyear on my GMC 1500 and then my first Ford Expedition (1997 model…the one with guts). When I went to replace the tires, I was told not to expect the 70,000 miles I had gotten out of the first set. Goodyear had changed the compound of the rubber. From that point on, I’ve run Goodrich. I have them on my Ford F-250 Super Duty now. The salesman tried to sell me some French tire…Michelin. I’m not a fan of anything French, even “french fries”. I hope no one tries to tell me that Michelin is made in the US. I know that. My nephew, a computer nerd,, works for them. He has to go back and forth to France. That means, any dollar I spend a part of it ends up in France.
