Spent the day splitting wood and stacking to get ready for the winter. As a winter prep, we have a woodstove as one of several methods to heat during the upcoming Maine winter.

I hope you have more wood than that ready for the upcoming Maine winter! Winters are long up in this area. I’m in NH and usually most of us have had our wood aging since late spring to early summer.

Rc – That’s all I have right now although I continue look for good deals. As propane is our main source of heat and we have an ample supply I’m not overly concerned with our wood supply. I agree that if the wood stove was our main source of heat then we would be very slim on supply. As I know we could have interruptions to our propane supply I am sourcing more wood -our finances remain limited and we do what we can do.

As I live within 100 miles of the Canadian border and have two wood burning sources of heat in my home, I would like to recommend a tool, the Kindling Cracker. A device that is marvelously and simply designed to create kindling without worries of losing a finger or more when splitting off small pieces of wood for starting a fire with a hatchet or axe. The blade is fixed, one places the wood upon the blade and hits the wood with a mallet or hand sledgehammer and it splits off without any worries of damage to your extremities. My wife loves it when I am not available to start a fire, what better recommendation than that? Solidly constructed for years of use. It is a worthy addition to your fire making armamentarium of tools.

Appreciate it Ralph. I’ve seen those and wondered if they worked or not. I will likely buy one soon. I picked up a special “drill bit” ultra-cheap that is supposed to split wood using your drill. I’ve used it a few times and results have been decent. I’ll post up my experiances with everything I’ve tried here soon.

When do winter temps start and how long??
I need to work on a wood pile myself but don’t use it often as my winters are sometimes summer!!😂-
Hi Jana. Winter temps here in Maine could happen in late October or into November. When I say winter temps I am talking down close to 32 degrees or lower. We are expecting 35 degrees within the next week.

You need to get yourself a froe for your green wood splitting. They’re used to control the splitting of green wood. My dad had one along with a splitting maul. He was a wood-splitting fiend when he would get really going.
