From the Desk of John Rourke – August 10th, 2017

SITE UPDATE: Small addition to the website. Go all the way to the bottom of the site and there is a short summary about me, a mini-version of my Instagram feed, and the cover of whatever book I am reading right now.

    ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊

Flight time for a missile to go from North Korea to Guam = 14 minutes.

    ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊

Completed my latest AR pistol build. Had an issue with getting the bolt catch pin inserted. It just wouldn’t go. Had to “repeal and replace” it with a new pin. I purchased some special tools off eBay to help with that installation and it went much smoother.

Here is a pic of the completed gun…..

    ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊

Lightweight AR Build Update: I have almost all the components to put together this latest project. This is certainly a budget build so really curious what the weight will end up being. 5 pounds is the goal but not sure how close I’ll get. Standard M4 weight at around 6.5 pounds shaving 1.5 pounds is doable but we’ll see.

    ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊

I’ve seen many stories of people who use wood to cook and heat with – via open flame – developing respiratory issues. Stories out of Venezuela are confirming this issue as well. The constant breathing of smoke creates a raspy voice and eventually breathing issues.

Something to consider for post-SHTF times.

  • Dismissing The Threat of EMP From North Korea?

Dismissing The Threat of EMP From North Korea?

While many dismiss North Korea’s ability to bring harm to the United States directly – there are those who believe quite the opposite. There is evidence to suggest that if North Korea has not already placed nuclear warheads within multiple satellites passing over the United States – they could.  Others suggest that an EMP threat exists at a minimum from an offshore container ship launch.

Who is correct? Who is right? Who has all the facts? Well, I don’t know. Article over, right?

    Not quite.

As prepper’s we prepare for possibilities. Logic dictates those threats that are most plausible should receive the largest weight in deciding what prep’s to work on. EMP is one of many and in my view moving up the list of possibility.

In a recent article on World Net Daily Michael Maloof, a former senior security policy analyst for the Secretary of Defense and the author of “A Nation Forsaken” – he lays out his belief that North Korea is a dangerous threat to the United States:

    EMP, North Korea, article, except

While it is understandable to prioritize economic troubles and personal job loss over a possible EMP threat – to ignore it is just not….recommended.

  • Jericho Episode 2: Fallout

    Jericho Episode 2: Fallout

Here is the second of a weekly installment discussing an episode of the popular TV series – Jericho – which aired originally back in 2006. Every Tuesday night we are watching an episode and then will discuss what happens the following day. It can be watched free on Netflix or purchased on VUDU. Jericho is also available on DVD.

    Jericho Episode 2 – “Fallout”

    Summary:

That iconic morse code audio leads the viewer into episode 2. Storm clouds coming from the direction of the nuclear blast are seen by Jake and Hawkins and the alert is sent up. The town scrambles to find shelter for its citizens and communicate the coming threat of fallout to all.

Issues develop as the old Civil Defense fallout shelter under the Medical Center is a wreck and it’s air filtration system inoperable. Meanwhile Emily Sullivan(Jake’s old girlfriend) has run out of gas on her way to pick up her fiance – and is oblivious to the situation. She is picked up by two fake police officers and she guides them to the Richmond Ranch.

Things happen fast. People get evacuated to the one working shelter under Town Hall while the Medical Center shelter cannot be repaired. The decision is made to bus people to the local salt mines and shelter in place there.

    Hawkins displays some suspicious activity.

A dangerous situation develops at the Richmond Ranch with the two fake police officers who are actually escaped prisoners. Jake leaves the safety of the mines and heads to the Richmond Ranch after hearing Emily sending out a distress call on a police radio.

    Discussion:

Great episode that highlights just how unprepared most people and towns are to handle a significant disaster. Episode 2 highlights how the absence of normal communication methods can mean the difference between life and death. The town and its people are making decisions on guesses and theories. Even the simple weather forecast we all take for granted could mean the difference between life and death in Jericho.

Don’t forget to watch Episode 3 next Tuesday night.

    Jericho Episode 1 – “Pilot”

    Summary:

Main character Jake Green returns to his hometown to collect some inheritance after being away for several years under mysterious circumstances. After running into several old friends making up different stories explaining his long absence he ends up fighting with his father regarding money. Jake decides to leave empty handed and witnesses a mushroom cloud as he heads out of town. Being distracted Jake and another vehicle collide.

The townspeople are understandably distraught over the mushroom cloud rising over Denver in the distance.   The town’s Mayor Johnston Green(Jake’s father) and the local police begin to look for information on what exactly has happened. Was it an accident? Are we under attack? A school bus of missing kids add to the story and Jake helps get the bus back to town as parents panic over their children.

The town finds out that Denver was NOT the only explosion and NOT an accident. The plot thickens……

    Discussion:

The town’s immediate semi-panicked reaction is fairly realistic. There is no TV reception and no phones working – cell or landline. I have to assume cable and satellite TV is out as well as all Internet access. This was a bit unrealistic but remember this takes place in 2006 and there maybe a justifiable reason(stay tuned). Mayor Green places an emphasis on staying calm and displayed leadership in a crisis.

After the power goes out panic really begins to set in. The “not knowing what is happening” and the stress of no power and uncertainty fuels tempers at local fuel pumps. This would most certainly occur and likely to a larger extent depending on the area. Remember – this is within hours of the initial explosion.

Local grocery store owner Gracie finds that all the refrigerated food is going bad but her faithful employee Dale Turner throws some in the freezers along with some ice. Good thinking.

The scenario itself seems somewhat plausible but doubtful. Could terrorists coordinate a large scale nuclear attack covering multiple cities?  Regardless of believability that is the storyline.

For those who have not watched the rest of the series Episode 1 leaves so many questions unanswered.

Don’t forget to watch Episode 2 next Tuesday night.

  • Jericho Rewatch…..join in the event

One of my favorite TV shows of all time is Jericho. Never seen it? Here is a brief synopsis:

A small town in Kansas is literally left in the dark after seeing a mushroom cloud over near-by Denver, Colorado. The townspeople struggle to find answers about the blast and solutions on how to survive. Follow each episode as information as to what is happening through the rest of the country and people figure out ways to survive in this new world.

Season 1 consists of 22 episodes. Season 2 has an additional 7 however I was not a big fan of season 2. It was obvious the budget was cut and production quality diminished.

I am inviting all of you to rewatch the entire first season of Jericho with me and share your thoughts the day after. Starting Wednesday July 27th I’ll recap each episode and give a few thoughts on the previous evening’s events.

Jericho can be watched several ways. First – Netflix members can access Season 1 as part of their membership. Amazon Prime members can purchase episodes. Of course Jericho is also available via DVD.

I’ll throw up a reminder as Episode 1 draws near. Remember – watch it the evening of the 26th. and share your thoughts the next day.
