What is rifle reality? Jeff Cooper knew what it was, our military snipers know what it is as well.
It’s the concept of bringing enough gun. People, we have hard, hard times coming. We will very likely be in the fight of our lives as individuals and Americans. Few realize that proper weapon selection can be a lifesaver. I prefer the .308 battle rifle.
Former Navy Seal Matt Bracken wrote a series of articles on possible scenarios in coming events. He hit upon important points. Most of the adversaries we are likely to face regardless of the group they represent will carry a .223 caliber weapon. or a 7.62 x 39 mm caliber weapon. These weapons are limited in range. The .308 will vastly outreach them.
Now I hear the arguments of how the .223 is just great and reaches out there. Then how come the military snipers don’t use it? The answer is killing power. A Louisiana Swat team hit a section 8 project house to get out a barricaded subject using .223 weapons. They were unable to hit the barricaded subject due to the inability of the .223 bullet to penetrate the building’s steel door. They now carry .308 Fn-Fal rifles. Several members of that swat team got shot but they learned from it.
Matt Bracken advised using a high capacity, scoped battle rile in .308 to reach out and hit multiple targets with reach and power and that is the reason for it all. Jeff Cooper stated that a rifle should project power, accurately at a distance with speed. Anyone who has ever sparred or fought an opponent with a much longer reach understands this. They can hit u before you can hit them.
This is the thesis of my argument. The .308 gives you the reach over the .223 and 7.62 x 39 crowd. For those who can only get one gun, get a .308 battle rifle. A good Fn-Fal, G3 or clone, or even the venerable M1A. It will do the job greatly. The goal is to reach out, punch cover, buck the wind, and put the bad guys down hundreds of yards before he is even a threat to you. This is life insurance. Buy for your health, buy for your life, but buy it now.
Great article and very true. You can mitigate issues with 223/556 by buying better ammunition than generic 55 and 62 grain. The reality is most people are not fit enough to carry and fight with a 10-12 pound battle rifle in .308.
Very true. Appreciate the comment and perspective.
Good article.
Glad you liked it Sheltie.
Logical argument.
IMO I like the AR-10 as well. .308 ammo.. and common controls.
GG58
I’ll get an AR-10 someday. Hopefully sooner rather than later.
Have a PTR 91, scoped, folding HK bipod in .308, it is an awesome functioning machine, and the mags are inexpensive and plentiful. Used in a
DMR capacity, a formidable projection of power.
WOuld have loved to gert one of those Ralph.
Great article, certainly inspires you to rethink your battle gear, the military has answered this by always having the best marksmen in their squad equipped with a high powered long range weapon, DMR usually, it’s not often needed in general tactics but once it is, there’s no getting around it… you either do or you don’t, and not having it could be game over, BUT the other 9 out of ten times your 5.56 will not only save fatigue, get the job done well, and will also increase your capacity, 308 is a Beautiful concept in the military so to speak, until there’s no Blackhawks resupplying you seven days in behind military lines. Let’s make a new mistake when SHTF happens WE will ALL be behind military lines WITHOUT Blackhawks swooping down and resupplying us with those big Beautiful heavy bullets… that being said there are many old school “survivalist” who say and I find it hard to disagree with their logic that tbe 22 LR is tbe the ultimate survival gun, I know, I know this is the part we’re the key board warriors living in their mommy’s basement sleeping on a coach come out saying you can not do that, let’s just pretend your fat ass doesn’t know what the fck your talking about and move right on past this part shall we? Now that we’ve avoided the measure off of manhood crap that makes me utterly sick when talking to people on the internet let’s dive into to the reason why these extremely experienced people who do not live in mommy’s basement and have years of experience in the woods honing their skills would ever want to rely on such a small caliber, it’s simple really, it comes down to the ammo that you can carry with you, for five ar-15 loaded mages you could instead have a brick of 550 22 LR rounds, would you rather a 150 rounds or 550 rounds? But wait that’s not that cut and dry, let’s look at the circumstances are you bugging out on foot because your neighborhood is being over tan and searched by gangs?? Ahh 😱 now we seem to understand the issue, capacity, BUT wait!!! There’s more, that 5.56 with all that furniture weighs in at 9 pounds and looks awefully pretty to those gang members now ruling most suburban neighborhoods, where as that Henry AR-7 is 3.5 pounds broken down to its 14” grey man backpack storable position as you dive through neighborhoods taking cover or blending in with the vagrants or refugees trying to get out of town “every fight avoided is a fight won” now let’s talk about some of the other issues that come without resupply, wars are lost because of this, armies are brought to their knees because they don’t have enough supplies, if you truly have to bug out, or travel any kind of real distance your going to have to carry A LOT, water, 7.3 pounds per gallon, in extreme conditions walking you need to drink a gallon a day, most people will only get maybe 10 miles a day avoided hostiles at the very best! 3 days water and your already above 20 pounds, add food and shelter to that with at least one change of clothing and extra pair of boots, talk to green barre about being behind enemy lines, they ALWAYS have a spare set of boots, talk to a through hiker that has walked everyday for months about footwear, but please don’t talk to the keyboard warriors living in mommy’s basement!!! I mean they can’t even make it on their own in this utopia of modern civilization where everyone gets a trophy for showing up, yet they live with their mommy’s and like to tell everyone online how wrong they are for having a different opinion, thought police political Justice communists is what they really are, sad part is their to stupid to even know it, yep I’m not political correct and I actually have opinions and no I don’t care how that makes you feel, and I’m not sorry, so let’s just move along now… so back to our armament selections, I would like to think it’s understood that in this scenario I’m painting that there is a full size lightweight side arm at the ready while the riffle is in the backpack in fact my personal get tbe hell out bag has a glock 19 coupled with a Kel-tech sub-2000 which takes glock mags chambered in 9mm, but I would most definitely switch to my ar-7 if I had a great distance to cover because of weight, you have to be realistic, you have to actually put this gear together, put it on your back and go a few miles. Every throughhiker to ever walk the Appalachian trail completely change and lighten their packs after the first few days of carrying it, this is where true experience plays a huge role in weather or not you survive or not. All this being said tbe United States military has been working on this very issue the past two years and is about to change the standard military round of 5.56, one of the concepts from this study is the 2.23 valkyrie! I’m currently working on a build now! This round is flat shooting and lethal out to 7 to 800 yards, one of the most flat plane ballistics in the world for this range, lightweight rounds, well lighter than 308, but the bullet is much longer and heavier than the 5.56 round, ammo has come a long way, even 22 rounds have been made Considerably more deadly, the 22 LR would never be my first choice if circumstances didn’t dictate it, but I’m certainly not going to not have it as a option, just as the 308 has fantastic range and stopping power, where conditions allow I would most definitely use it and I own 5 not counting my Russian counterparts so believe me when I say I truly see the value in them and agree they do have a place on the battlefield, but knowing what “tool” to use WITHOUT involving our egos is truly key it doing a proper job.
