Random Tactical Thoughts – – – – > Palmetto State Armory | Homestead Defense | Stocking Up | Ammunition | Magazines | Guns

A few random thoughts revolving around all things “tactical” in nature……

  • With extreme rarity, every firearm in existence is capable of higher performance than the shooter can provide. While there are firearm accessories that can enhance and allow a shooter to utilize said firearm with higher efficiency and performance, I’m amazed at the constant drivel over the latest “combat pistol” and AR-this and AR-that. This topic deserves an entire article and maybe a video because the firearms industry has done a fantastic job convincing millions that if they don’t have the latest optic, the best trigger, and that special tacti-cool accessory then you simply cannot survive the coming zombie apocalypse.

  • Light as a Defensive Tool – As I evaluate and make decisions on priorities at our homestead, I’ve considered mounting light bars similar to what is on big redneck trucks that blind oncoming traffic on backwoods country roads. BTW – I love those trucks! My thought is to put these high-powered light bars on all four sides of the cabin so I can flick them on with one switch(or be selective) and be able to see all around the property while largely blinding anyone who may be nearby. Obviously, this may not be desirable in every single possible situation, however, it seems to me to be an inexpensive means to illuminate the immediate surrounding area. Maybe there’s a better alternative that is specifically meant for outdoor illumination.

  • I promote Palmetto State Armory for one very specific reason – VALUE.  I can only speak from my own experience and for me, PSA has provided excellent reliability with good quality and extremely attractive prices. The bottom line is folks who could not afford Daniel Defense and Sig nor FN can get a reliable and accurate firearm at excellent prices. Period. Forget the most elite tactical know-it-alls that promote the most expensive brands. If you aim at it and can hit it – well, there you go.

  • There’s no better time than RIGHT NOW to stock up on magazines and ammunition as we travel forward into such an uncertain future. Maybe the zombie apocalypse won’t happen. Maybe every day is just one day closer to when some demented tyrannical President signs an executive order to place a 1,000% “fee” on guns and ammunition. Maybe. I haven’t forgotten the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban, nor the firearms market after Sandy Hook, and how I had wished I had stocked up on more magazines and ammunition. That feeling sucked and I’m determined for it not to happen again.

  • I’ve owned a few Bushnell TRS-25 red dot optics since it came out decades ago. My personal SHTF weapon  – a short-barrelled AR that I call “Venom” – has one mounted atop and it continues to do what it’s supposed to do. I look at the target, both eyes are open, and superimpose the dot onto the area where I need rounds to impact. It works every time. So – for around $100 the TRS-25 provides fast target acquisition, long battery life, and has zero problems staying sighted in. I have zero urge to put something else on Venom.

    JR,
If you want to put all the lights on your truck, I would do a couple of things, oh let me say that I was a full time mechanic for over 10 years, before I got on the fire department, and I’m still doing it part time for an ambulance company.
First decide how many lights what style etc and add up the amperage draw, luckily LEDs have low Amp draw.
Then check that against your stock alternator. You could do one of 2 things if it’s not enough, put a bigger alternator on in place of factory. This might require a slightly longer belt. Or add a second alternator. Also consider adding an auxiliary battery as well. Then I would add an auxiliary fuse block that specifically powers the lights. This will aid in trouble shooting if lights quit working etc. Power the auxiliary fuse block with a KOKO relay. That’s Key On Key Off. This way the lights will not be able to be on unless the key is on. Set up your lights to a rocker switch panel, one switch for each light or a combo of lights that you want to work together.
It sounds complicated but it’s fairly easy, there are thousands of videos on YouTube that can help you through each step.
I would also run all your wires in wire loom, and use connectors for each light. This keeps you from having to cut splice etc if a light goes bad.
Just a few tips from an old head mechanic.
If you have any questions just hit me up and I’ll help you out any want I can.
Good luck, and BTW I love those trucks too, and I’m currently doing the same thing to my Tacoma!

    A little about each point:
    * I agree 100% about the make and model of your AR, like a car, the model is only important if you are an expert driver. Same goes for firearms, get out and practice, practice, practice. Then get some good training. Thanks by the way for your last heads-up on the parts deal.
    * light is vital around your house and property specifically if you have animals. Predator control is terribly important to your protection. I would look into motion sensor systems as well as switchable. You can shop for days on Amazon there are so many. They are great on your truck too.
    * gotta say Global Ordinance is a great value if you watch and wait for their specials or sales. 5000 rounds per gun is my goal. Gotta quit buying weapons? so I can catch up.
    * As I get older I had to finally put optics on my long guns. Pissed me off this getting old bulls**t. Don’t need the best just better than my eyes. Vortex makes a wide variety of products for different budgets. But get what works for you not the newest “best” one. Again practice, practice, practice. Did I mention PRACTICE!
    * Keep up the good work and stay on track.
