In June a thread on one of your Q&A posts brought up the issue of UV penetration of plastics/glass. The first week of September, i think, PanhandleRancher mentioned he might have the info on that question…..if it is too long of an answer to post here could it be forwarded to an e-mail? Thanks ! Oh….i think PR mentioned something about the benefit of lighting rods on that June post also and i wondered if there would be forthcoming info on that possibly as well. Everyone along the east coast stay safe – praying for your safety.

      From Panhandle Rancher –

One of my ‘good friends’ runs a chemistry laboratory. I asked him about the glass v plastic issue with UV transmission because of my ‘it depends’ answer in a previous post regarding whether it was better to use a glass jar such as Ball or Mason or a plastic soda bottle for sunlight UV sterilization of water. Turns out that it does ‘depend’ and by that I mean upon numerous factors. In gross generality, it appears that a plastic soda bottle may indeed pass more of the higher frequency UV than soda lime glass, but it largely ‘depends’ upon coatings of which there is usually no knowledge. For normal sunlight UV, he opined that there is negligible difference in transmission between the two media. Here is his response:

Ultraviolet (UV) is an electromagnetic radiation with a wavelength from 100 nm (30 PHz) to 380 nm (750 THz), shorter than that of visible light but longer than X-rays.

Common soda lime glass is partially transparent to UVA but is opaque to shorter wavelengths, whereas fused quartz glass, depending on quality, can be transparent even to vacuum UVwavelengths. Ordinary window glass passes about 90% of the light above 350 nm, but blocks over 90% of the light below 300 nm.

Ultraviolet light absorbers are molecules used in organic materials (polymers, paints, etc.) to absorb UV light to reduce the UV degradation (photo-oxidation) of a material. This would include plastic containers such as soda bottles, although they normally do not have to include the additives as they are not expected to be left in sunlight for extended periods of time.

Ultraviolet C is 100 – 280 nm. (This is the far uv and a portion of the middle uv range.). It is the short wavelength uv that is used as a germicide. It is normally absorbed by the ozone layer and atmosphere, so most of this energy does not reach the earth’s surface.

Plastic is a common container for soft drinks. These bottles are produced from polyethylene terephthalate (Poly(ethyl benzene-1,4-dicarboxylate) also known as PET plastic, using the blow molding process. They only have a fair resistance to uv degradation.

I would conclude that unless you have an artificial source of far uv radiation the transmission through glass (soda lime type) vs PET is not really an issue.

I would suspect if you really look closely, the PET would provide better transmission unless you have a thick piece of PET.

RE : UV and plastic and glass. A chemistry professor warned about this over 12 years ago.My understanding is that its best to NOT leave ANY plastics in the sun
if possible. . Many products made in China and other countries for ex: childrens
character plastic drinking cups etc. can be very toxic-especially if they go through a dishwasher. Glass is much better. Baby bottles are also a concern. Some items now will state on the packaging if they are BPA safe etc. If it doesnt state it is assume its not..

Rourke- Question : Scenario a hurricane is due to arrive- a prepping family has
two vehicles and MUST evacuate-what items do you suggest are the MOST IMPORTANT to carry? Everyone prayers for your safety re: Matthew.
    Arlene

PS I know we have a few people on this site who live in the Hurricane Evacuation zones you are in my prayers very especially.

Sounds like a last resort for”killing the bugs”in an emergency situation since the variables that could affect the results, especially so far from the equator, are probably not going to be clearly understood. Sun Ovens used the solar oven to heat water that had been filtered for drinking as well as bathing/washing, but it was heat not UV that accomplished this. Even though the glass on their ovens is specially ordered to maximize more of the sun’s rays than average window glass, time and heat were the forces used it seemed. Guess i was hoping for a magic bullet,so thanks for setting me straight.

Every use the Fish Antibiotics and what did you use for a PDR type resource to which, how much and how often ? Just curious I used Allivet recently and had a good experience. Good ordering site and prices as well as not to hard to reach the free shipping minimum. They have a feature that allows you to order regularly to further reduce cost.. I didn’t use that but it is interesting.

    1. JR says:

I have used fish antibiotics on a few occasions. I used the dosage recommendations from drugs.com. Of the antibiotics I purchased I have printed out the info from that website for future off grid reference.

      1. goingray58 says:

Yeah what I did and planned as well .. for antibiotics.. good to go then ..
Still getting travel meds for international and keeping them too ..
        Thanks man ..

About to go back to just being the lonewolf survivalist & say screw everyone else. Just cannot get a MAG working in my area. Over the last two years I’ve tried everything, there are multiple people who find it necessary but always come up with a excuse to not get on board or they turn toward the patriot/militia groups in the area believing they are the better option & feeling like I’m just putting a bigger target on my back. Can’t count on family (except the significant other) because they have horrible big gov’t liberal views/beliefs. Thoughts? Suggestions?

    1. goingray58 says:

jh – Same over here.. It’s easier to turn to a quasi group .. you don’t have to do as much, learn as much, BE as much .. I’ve all but stopped sharing my ideas unless they share theirs first .. and I’ll listen.. then we’ll see. I have a few dedicated friends that live at a distance.. but that is it. They know they are welcome at my place and I theirs for the most part (as long as I don’t come as a refugee) .. For me.. I’ll just do my thing and keep learning and working on me.. Stay in contact with the ones I know.. etc.. None of my family is liberal but they are not all committed to pushing forward.. But then they won’t be coming to me for their help either I expect ..
Bottom line .. “I” am the only one I can control in my actions, thoughts and deeds.. so I’ll work on that. The only issue really there is to not be TOO isolated from others.. That paints a different target on you.. Be gray.. work hard as you can .. work smart.. and find just a few brothers or sisters to bounce ideas off of when you are needing a sanity check.. my .02

    2. JR says:

Keep looking jh. One thing to consider is IF something significant were to happen would some of those you feel you cannot count on suddenly come on board? These might be the typical “I’m coming over to your house when the shit hits the fan” types but in reality they very well could be a resource under your direction and leadership.

      1. joyce says:

I think you hit it squarely on the head JR….any past conversations or remembered behaviors will be front and center in the minds of those that eschewed your “suggestions/opinions” in the past….OR were just being observant of how you live life. If needing to provide for your family/kids is squeezing you hard, one will be rummaging the files in your brain for ANY possibilities….hoping i haven’t left any ” breadcrumbs” leading to our door that we will regret. There are some good people talked to that will become assets, we can hope……especially family. Needing each other works both ways. Thanks for the positive spin on that thought.

Just started using Cod Liver Oil this week, using the fermented kind. I am over 70 and still quite active but am having issues with arthritis in my feet. Hands too but my feet affect me the most. I need to walk for the exercise but when flared up it is very difficult. Reading information on the internet tells me it is a great product. It is supposed to be good for a lot of things.
Do any of you have any experience with it, good or bad? I sure am not taking it for the taste but I can deal with that if I get good benefits from it.

    1. goingray58 says:

Haven’t tried the oil yet .. I am not a 70 something.. but I had my feet hurting so bad I’d have to walk to 10-15 minutes to “warm” them up enough to not limp much .. docs gave me meds and all kinds of stuff .. some of them would make you not care but I didn’t like that option .. though with a shot or two it was a little fun .. being fuzzy all the time aint good either though.. so I stopped and got a recumbent cycle .. It seem like 30 minutes or more on that 4-5 times a week works out the painful part for the most part.. not totally but well enough I don’t notice and am not limited to any activity.. When I have a flare up I do some diclofenac.. and it knocks it out same day.. otherwise it still goes away in 3-4 days.. as long as I keep exercising.. Everybody is different though .. I’ll be interested to hear about your results..
      GG58

      1. Fred C says:

Thanks gg58. The material I read about the Cod Liver Oil says it will take a while to bring results. I will do some feedback but it may be a while. Supposedly it replaces the need for Ibuprofen. Another benefit is better brain function and boy, do I need that sometimes!

    1. Fred C says:

Thanks yooper. I have a friend that swears by it too. I have tried it but it kills my stomach. I have a lot of problems with heartburn.

    1. JR says:

Interesting concept. I like the looks of the Progressive Force version. I can see this fitting in with the church environment as you could say you are carrying your bible and materials as you stated. If you are on the security team it very well may invite suspicion. When I worked security at my church I carried concealed inside the waistband. In most states it’s illegal to carry in a church so keep that in mind.

      1. Patriot Believer says:

Yeah, I like the deployment on the pro force too but room for other stuff is pretty tiny. All the ones that carry more compromise deployment in some way. Here in Louisiana, you need church leadership permission and 8 hours of training annually–which the local parish sheriff provides free. That, or be commissioned law enforcement. All of us have both.

SO armor is good .. and both have some virtue it would seem .. The cross body config is hands free and could run if needed.. a plus I have a problem with the Velcro.. Ever her that in a quiet place .. and there is a lot of it .. no way to get it to turn loose stealthily .. I’d rather have a zipper with big quiet lugs on the zipper..
If I had an over the shoulder or / cross shoulder messenger bag with a flap type.. with a zipper outside .. for a compartment between me and the bag (against my leg or hip/side ). I can easily get the zipper open .. or run it open with had inside if I adjust the bag up to ride high..
We frequently escort women to their cars at nighttime functions.. etc.. You would see it if you looked hard .. but you would be pretty covert .. especially if under a jacket or coat. You could also have a pocket for a plate that loads from the other compartment of the bag and zips shut. And still have some cargo room if needed.
I’ve never SEEN this config .. but that is what I would want IMO. And it woudl not cost more and $100.00 excluding the plate unless it were leather. I’m thinking Cordura.. business colors and earth tones… not hiny .. satin or buff tone.. as un-noticeable as possible..
      meh .. done designing

Forgot to mention. We use Motorola’s Moto Hint and smart phones. The Moto Hint blue tooth connects to the phone which has the Zello app loaded. So far, it’s working. No secret service like spagettio earpiece and radio that screams “shoot me first” The team is all but transparent.

  8. Patriot Believer says:

Thanks GG, I hadn’t thought about the noise issue with velcro but it is something to consider. Maybe doesn’t matter so much for this environment.
Everyone wants the smallest, lightest handgun they can find for carry purposes…until they need it. Then they want a cannon.
I’ll settle for a full size Glock 41.
Headed for D.C. tomorrow (ugh) so will pull the trigger on the Pantac and get this moving. I plan to yank the crappy universal holster and put a kydex in it.
