Q & A Day…….Civil Defense, Nuclear War and the “All New Fire HD”

Ask a question and I will give you an answer. It can be about pretty much anything – politics, firearms, current events, survival, preparedness, or “Is it true that cannibals don’t eat clowns because they taste funny? “ – whatever.

Go ahead – “make my day.”

I was always more concerned of an economic collapse, however now feeling that I am way behind in preparing for civil defense types of events like nuclear war and/or EMP strikes. Please share any ideas on how to quickly get prepared and what should be the priority.

  2. GotUR6 says:

I agree with the nuclear strike scenario. I do have a bug-out location about 300 miles from where I live in the DFW area. But if a strike on the Metroplex does occur I have nowhere to shelter in place until the fallout stops. I don’t even think there are municipal buildings in the suburb where I live that have basements or old fallout shelters in them. Assuming I and my family survived the first strike I’m totally unprepared at least from the physical location standpoint. Any suggestions?

    1. JR says:

Many of us are in the same situation GotUR6. Nuclear war survival and fallout preps are not something I have thought about since I was a teenager. I am researching and will update once I have some answers.

    2. jh says:

Got, start looking for below ground parking garages – public and private, those can be used as field expedient shelters. Look for underground telephone or electrical tunnels access manhole covers – another field expedient shelter. If your BOL is 300 miles away, you’ll not get there in time. Get Nuclear War Survival Skills book in hard form, it has great information. Most buildings 4 stories or taller have a basement of some sort, know how to access them from the outside. If your city is old enough type into a search engine your town.. ‘and civil defense’ or ‘fallout shelters in….’. There may be some historical info of where shelters use to be in your area. Have a means to carry or drag at least 2 weeks of food, meter for detecting radiation. Heck a long time ago there was a guy named FlightERDoc who worked downtown and he claimed he had made a temp fallout shelter using bags of concrete as side & overhead cover inside a rental storage unit. He had it stocked for 30 days worth of supplies including a bicycle to get out of town. Just some ideas.

      1. JR says:

Good ideas – right inline with some of my thoughts. I like the idea f the rental storage unit. I would imagine if the managers of the storage facility were to perform an inspection some questions would be asked. Nothing illegal but certainly would draw some attention.

I’m on the lookout myself for possible fallout shelter areas.

  3. Fred C says:

JR and all, I would appreciate your thoughts about using PVC as a means to store a cache. I am thinking about using 6 inch and 4 inch to store “special” items that should not be found. PVC is easy enough to get but not sure about a cap to seal the ends with. Hope I don’t forget my hacksaw when it is time to open it! The plan is to bury the PVC.

    1. JR says:

Fred C – you can put together PVC pipes and then add threaded couplings so no need to cut the cache apart when needed. 5 gallon Home Depot buckets are another choice. They seal fairly well however I would place it inside a few heavy duty lawn/leaf trash bags as well. The addition of desiccant is a good idea. The MTM Ammo Cache is another option for smaller items.

  4. Brenda says:

I have always been bewildered by the demolition of the old CD areas. I remember when every town had one and during the Cuban Missile Crisis having drills in our town. It is obvious the Russians followed our lead and maintained theirs. It is obvious to me that, our society has focused on the here and now but not on the what ifs. Short of every one carrying a radiation suit and mask; we have no defense. We can only pray that God puts us ‘upwind’ of any scenario.

    1. JR says:

MeetUp.com is a decent option. Facebook local preparedness groups is another. Craigslist is also an option but be cautious with that one as there are a lot of “interesting” characters on that one.

    2. Brenda says:

Be aware that many sites have been monitored. Now that the web is not protected by US domains and agencies. Some Christian preparedness sites have been mysteriously removed and some have had their reader lists hacked, while some have been subjected to “new members” who begin spouting globalism garbage. This site is great and John knows what he is talking about. He is a published author and didn’t start his original site and this one to make money off the backs of people that he pumped fear into. So many sites today are ‘grand children’ of other sites just pushing product.
Sometimes the best way to meet genuine good preppers is to figure out the subjects that you want to gather with others for. Gun enthusiast; visit a local gun show. Same with solar power etc. You tube has good videos and yet there are some that are total bull. For example; one mentioned storing water, etc. in milk jugs. Well, long ago I tried that. Milk jugs are formulated to break down after two years. I have a warped bathroom closet to prove it! Those who like learning about outdoor cooking and camping really have to be aware; I once went to a seminar on out door cooking and I thought I regressed and was back in the 70’s! They just don’t call themselves hippies; if you know what I mean and now I am explaining to my grandsons that pot brownies aren’t something to try just yet!

I&D: incision and drainage of puss (usually used in reference to an abscess). This is a very important step and
should not be skipped. Antibiotics have trouble penetrating into the middle of a puss pocket and so if not drained
the duration of therapy will need to be doubled or tripled.
Dosing usually follows common sense rules. These doses are for adult patients. If a range is given it should be
interpreted as little adult to big adult and/or mild infection vs. more serious infection. Pediatric dosing is also based
on size/weight and will usually be between one-forth the adult dose (babies) to the full adult dose (large teenager).

First, Thanks for all the good stuff on your site!

I am stuck on meat protein stores for my prep pantry. Too many years relying on MRE’s and the such (Deployed). I worry about feeding my adult family.

Any recommendations for ‘quality’ canned meat products that ‘picky’ eaters might accept? I’ve looked at Yoders, Survival Cave, Red Feather and Grabil. I already have some #10 cans of freeze dried meats on-hand.

    Thanks in advance, Ken
my real ‘call sign’ was sqrlb8

    1. JR says:

Well Ken that is a good topic for a future post. My suggestion may bring on some criticism but here it goes anyways –

First – on the cheap is rice, beans, and peanut butter. When you combine rice and beans you end up with a complete protein. What is a complete protein? It is a food source that contains all essential amino acids necessary for the human body. Anyways stocking up on rice and beans is cheap protein.

Second – canned Beef Stew/soups with meat are inexpensive, taste great, and provide high quality protein.

Third – canned meats such as chicken and SPAM. More expensive but a high concentration of protein per serving.

Last – freeze dried meats. Emergency Essentials is a good source and currently has a great sale going on.

The part of my answer some may disagree with is related to canned meats due to their supposed short shelf life. Canned goods will last WAY past their expiration date. No worries if rotation gets a little messed up.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you have more questions.

    2. Oren says:

sqrlb8, you need not worry about picky eaters with in reason. The way I have approached this is once everyone is hungry enough, and they have been outside working on getting the firewood split, garden tilled, weeded etc. and the livestock taken care of, they’ll eat what is offered up or do without. There will be no short order cooking nor picking at the plate. What you don’t eat this meal, you’ll eat the next.

    3. Brenda says:

Having been through hurricanes and formerly snow storms; when folks get hungry they won’t be picky eaters! Proteins are essential for the body, especially diabetics and children and those over 60. Many MREs and prepackaged meals are extremely high in calories. These are formulated for people truly on the move and exerting a lot of energy. If some one normally walks less than a mile a day or does no heavy work; these food items could lend to further obesity and ‘sluggish’ feelings. Dehydrated or freeze dried vegetables and proteins are the best bet for optimal health. What ever you store, make sure you have enough water to rehydrate items. For example, some buckets of food will require up to 76 gallons of water to completely use!

    1. JR says:

Not yet Badger. I have started and am certainly motivated right now. Starting with a galvanized trash can to be filled and sealed.

  8. Badger359 says:

Have made up your mind how you will respond if Hillary is elected and she puts through an EO for Australia style attack on our 2nd Amendment rights?

    1. Fred C says:

Too bad we have not seen some replies to this, it is a good question. I am not sure what I would do, need some more thought on it.

  9. Zenblaster in SC says:

    Hi everyone,

How are you set on powering items?

Been working on faraday cages etc and 12V backup power for my ham radio and usb charger. Have some 12V parts from West Mountain Radio to manage 12V for radio and USB charging when grid is down. Check out the DC to GO box system, especially with the 4007 USB charger version.

Also wanted to mention that West Marine is TODAY selling battery $55 off and I just got a $90 battery charger/trickler for FREE when I got a backup 12V battery for my ham gear. I dont work for any of these places but do use this stuff after researching.

After Matthew I found my power budget grid down was a bit lacking so I am getting this battery as Comms are high priority for me. If you are serious about comms check out http://www.AmRRon.com . Well worth about $6 to join for the SOI document they have, and if you are serious comms person then do go for the $40 AmRRon Corp membership. There is a lot more to that…

Also using the SunJack solar power system which appears to be a quality and cost effective alternative to Goal Zero.
