    A Fictional Scenario: Crimson Storm

I’ve got the itch to write a fictional story once again. For those who may have missed it, I authored a short book several years ago called A Survival Story. It was a decent first attempt at a book. I’ve brainstormed several ideas for a storyline and what I have below is a possibility. Nothing is written in stone and anything I write will be a planned trilogy.

Right now I have the title Invasion: Crimson Storm.

    Let me know your thoughts.

    Invasion: Crimson Storm

    Prologue Summary:

In a world plagued by shifting alliances and political unrest, a covert coalition forms between China, Russia, North Korea, and Iran, fueled by shared ambitions and a desire to undermine the global influence of the United States. Their aggressive plan? To orchestrate a massive invasion that would strike at the heart of the American homeland. Unbeknownst to the United States, the stage is set for a new chapter in the theater of war.

    Chapter 1: The Invasion

    The Build-Up

Dark clouds loomed over the horizon, casting an eerie shadow upon the unsuspecting shores of the United States. Unknown to its oblivious citizens, a storm was brewing—the epitome of aggression and malice. From behind the scenes, an alliance of unprecedented scale was forming, determined to shatter the American dream and bring the nation to its knees.

China and Russia, long-time rivals vying for global dominance, had set aside their differences, uniting under a shared goal—to dismantle the United States of America. With the assistance of North Korea, Iran, and others they meticulously plotted their invasion, exploiting weaknesses and striking when the nation was least prepared.

This plan was not limited to traditional warfare alone. Deep within American soil, dormant cells lay in wait, hidden in plain sight, blending seamlessly into the fabric of society. Their purpose: to sabotage key targets and generate chaos from within. The invaders knew that the heart of any nation lay in its infrastructure, and they aimed to strike at its core.

The Initial Day of the Attack

As dawn broke on the west coast, a hush settled over the land, betraying the imminent danger lurking beneath the surface. The invaders had chosen their targets with surgical precision, aiming to cripple the United States from the very beginning. The first blows were struck simultaneously, like a satanic duo singing a song of destruction and demise.

Electrical substations, scattered along the western coast of California, became the primary focus. The invaders knew that severing the lifelines of power would leave the region vulnerable, thrusting it into nightmarish darkness. Saboteurs, armed with advanced knowledge and sophisticated weaponry, infiltrated these crucial hubs, overwhelming the security measures with ruthless efficiency. Security guards with hours of training were no match for the attacker’s aggression and overwhelming firepower.

Explosions ripped through the air, their booming echoes felt through the concrete and steel structures that contained the source of power and all it brought to the region. Arcs of energy sparked and danced, illuminating the darkened skies. The invaders had orchestrated a plan of darkness, plunging northern California into complete darkness.

In a meticulously timed sequence of events, the invaders struck elsewhere too. Bridges strategically targeted to hinder the response of the military crumbled into the depths below, their supports weakening as the invaders sought to isolate the west coast. They knew that without quick mobilization, the United States would struggle to counter their advance.

Chaos spread like wildfire. As the sun climbed higher, the realization of the onslaught settled upon the citizens of the affected regions. Panic set in, generated by the realization that all the familiar comforts of modern life were abruptly torn away. Without electricity, society began falling over the edge and most saw no light at the end of the tunnel. Panic and violence spread much faster than anyone anticipated.

But the invaders’ grasp extended far beyond the west coast. As the sun cast its glow upon the eastern seaboard, another wave of devastation erupted. Sleeper cells, embedded within the nation’s borders, revealed their true nature. Skyscrapers in New York City, once symbols of American power and prosperity, were transformed into towering infernos, billowing smoke and ash into the sky.

Financial centers crumbled under the weight of explosives, as the invaders sought to destabilize the economic backbone of the nation. Wall Street, the heart of global finance and monetary health, collapsed under the direct attack and panic of the American investor, reeling from the shockwaves of destruction. Precious metals skyrocketed in value as many predicted the complete collapse of the US dollar. The invaders understood that striking fear into the heart of America required more than mere physical aggression—it demanded the shattering of its collective mindset.

As the first chapter of this nightmarish invasion unfolded, the United States found itself teetering on the precipice of annihilation. The invaders had delivered a decisive blow, leaving the nation paralyzed and vulnerable. The days ahead held untold challenges, but amidst the darkness, emerged a glimmer of resilience and determination. For within the American spirit which had been decimated by a weak Socialist agenda from a secret powerful entity lay an indomitable will, a resolve to fight back against overwhelming odds. Patriots stood up and said, “We will not go down without a fight!”

Across the country, individuals began to come together, driven by a shared sense of duty and the realization that their survival depended on their unity. Ordinary citizens became unlikely heroes, stepping forward to provide aid and support to those affected by the devastation. Communities rallied, their bonds growing stronger amidst the chaos. Leaders emerged from the crowds and provided hope. They provided something to focus on other than despair. Suddenly previous differences seemed insignificant and a bond of Patriotism and unity became overwhelmingly powerful.

The military, though hampered by the loss of key infrastructure, regrouped swiftly, adapting to the new reality thrust upon them. They forged makeshift communication networks, relying on age-old methods and human ingenuity to coordinate their efforts. The men and women in uniform, driven by a deep-rooted sense of duty, prepared to face the invaders head-on, determined to defend their homeland at all costs.

It was a pivotal moment in history, a turning point where the United States stood at the crossroads of triumph or defeat. The invaders had underestimated the resilience of the American people, their unwavering spirit that refused to yield. While a segment of the population had grown weak and entitled, there was another that retained the patriotism and respect for the freedom that the Constitution provided and they would not just sit by and watch invaders take what God provided. In the face of unimaginable adversity, the nation would rise, united and determined, ready to face the challenges that lay ahead.

Little did the invaders know that their actions had unleashed a dormant strength—a fierce patriotism that spread throughout most of the populace. The invasion had awakened a sleeping giant, and though the path to victory seemed treacherous and uncertain, the United States would fight, fueled by an unyielding determination to reclaim what was theirs.

And so, as the sun set weeks after the initial invasion, a newfound resolve ignited within the hearts of the American people. The invaders had struck a blow, but they had also awakened a spirit that would not be easily quelled. The battle for the United States had begun, and the invaders would soon come to understand the true meaning of resilience, unity, and the unbreakable spirit of a nation. The challenge was great. Those Patriots spread throughout the American land would stand up and fight.

Will America reclaim its greatness and set forth a future as the Founders established?

    Time will tell.

My New Favorite Song: Try That In a Small Town, Jason Aldean

Those who are deeply invested and have fallen victim to the woke agenda are now attacking Jason Aldean due to his most recently released single.  “Try That In a Small Town” shows numerous examples of illegal violent acts carried out during riots across big cities in America. The message Aldean states is simple – big cities may put up with that shit but people in small towns won’t as they will look out for each other.

I absolutely love the video and the message it portrays.

Those woke socialists are suggesting that Aldean is pushing modern-day lynching, violence, and racism. Unbelievable. The very people who are against this song are the ones who promoted and excused violence across America.

We need to get this song as many views and listens as possible to send a message.

Take care all and enjoy the tunes!!

Video: Dark Future- Uncovering the Great Reset’s TERRIFYING Next Phase

It’s important that the public becomes educated on The Great Reset and what the powerful and evil elite have planned. It was just a few years ago I thought the mention of a group of powerful people who guided much of what happens in the world was a nutty conspiracy theory. I was wrong. I admit it. I’ve reached a place in my awareness that I now know we have been lied to about pretty much everything for decades. Nothing – and I mean absolutely nothing surprises me anymore. Glenn Beck is one person who is at the forefront of speaking about The Great Reset and trying t educate the populace – and get them prepared. The video below is related to Glenn’s newest book – Dark Future – which is a long one coming in close to 1 hour and 20. minutes.

If you have the time take a gander and listen to what Glenn lays out. I find it logical and fact-based with some common sense thrown in.

We have some interesting times ahead and I’m understating it, to say the least. It’s important to connect yourself with God and have inner peace and we simply do not know when what will happen and when.

What are you seeing? What are you thinking?

  • Getting Ready: Planting and Growing Blueberry Plants

Getting Ready: Planting and Growing Blueberry Plants

Growing your own food is not only rewarding but also promotes self-reliance. I just finished planting 6 blueberry plants and did quite a bit of research to make sure I did it right. We’ll see….LOL. Blueberries, delectable and nutritious, are a welcome addition to our Maine homestead. In this article, we’ll dive into the planting and growing of blueberry plants. From soil preparation and soil amendments to selecting the right blueberry species and understanding the fertilization process, we’ll equip you with the knowledge you need to cultivate a thriving blueberry harvest.

how to grow blueberry plants, getting ready, shtf, prepper, preparedness, survival gardening, survival, growing blueberries, blueberry plants, economic collapse,

    1. Soil Preparation:
The foundation for successful blueberry growing is soil preparation. Blueberries thrive in acidic soil with a pH range of 4.0 to 5.5. Follow these steps to prepare your soil:

    a. Soil Testing: Begin by testing the pH of your soil. Soil testing kits are available at garden centers or through online retailers. If the pH is too high, you will need to lower it to create an acidic environment suitable for blueberries. NOTE: Test your soil in several areas as it may vary depending on where you test.

    b. Soil Amendments: To lower the soil pH and improve its fertility, use the following organic amendments into the top 6-8 inches of soil:

    – Peat Moss: Peat moss is highly effective in increasing soil acidity. Mix it thoroughly into the soil, aiming for a ratio of one part peat moss to two parts soil.
    – Pine Needles: Pine needles are naturally acidic and can help maintain the desired pH level. Use them as mulch or incorporate them into the soil to enhance acidity.
    – Well-Rotted Sawdust: Sawdust, particularly from coniferous trees, can contribute to soil acidity. Ensure it is well-rotted to prevent nitrogen depletion, and mix it evenly into the soil.

    c. Organic Matter: Blueberries thrive in well-draining soil rich in organic matter. Prior to planting, incorporate compost or well-rotted manure into the soil to enhance its structure and fertility. Aim for a 2-3 inch layer and mix it evenly into the topsoil.

    d. Mulching: Blueberries benefit from mulching to conserve soil moisture and suppress weed growth. Apply a layer of organic mulch, such as wood chips, pine needles, or straw, around the base of the plants, leaving a gap around the stem to prevent rotting.

    2. Selecting Blueberry Species:

Choosing the right blueberry species is important for your planting area and space. Consider the following recommendations:

    a. Highbush Blueberries:

Blueberry plants come in two main types: highbush and lowbush. Highbush blueberries grow in a wider geographic range and they are a common choice for home gardeners. Is that you? Highbush types are the typical types found in grocery stores and they can grow upwards of 6-12 feet tall!!!

    – ‘Bluecrop’: This variety is renowned for its abundant, medium-sized berries and excellent flavor. It is winter-hardy and adapts well to various growing conditions.
    – ‘Jersey’: Known for its high yield and disease resistance, ‘Jersey’ produces large, flavorful berries. It is a reliable choice for home gardeners.
    – ‘Duke’: This variety is prized for its early ripening and robust, medium-sized berries. ‘Duke’ performs well in both cool and warmer climates.

    b. Lowbush Blueberries:

Lowbush are just that – low to the ground meaning they simply do not grow as tall. Typical height is around 2 feet. Lowbush are popular in Canada and Maine and grows all the way down to North Carolina.

    – ‘Top Hat’: Ideal for small gardens or container cultivation, ‘Top Hat’ is a compact variety that produces flavorful, small berries. It is also cold-hardy.
    – ‘Northblue’: Well-suited for colder regions, ‘Northblue’ is a lowbush variety with medium-sized berries that are rich in flavor. It boasts exceptional cold tolerance.

blueberry plant types, low bush, high bush, blueberries, survival, growing food, gardening, self reliance

    3. Planting Techniques:
Proper planting techniques are crucial for the healthy establishment of blueberry plants:

    a. Timing: Spring or early fall is the best time to plant blueberries. This allows the plants to develop a strong root system before facing extreme weather conditions.

    b. Spacing: Blueberry plants should be spaced 4 to 6 feet apart, allowing sufficient airflow and sunlight penetration. Rows should have a spacing of 8 to 10 feet. [NOTE: With my most recent planting I spaced them around 5-6 feet apart. So far, so good]

    c. Digging the Hole: Dig a hole at least 2X larger and deeper than the plant’s root ball. Gently loosen the roots and place the plant in the hole, ensuring it is at the same level as it was in the nursery container. Surround the plant with an excellent soil mixture to allow the roots to travel. Some will say a hole slightly larger than the root ball is fine. I recommend 2X.

    d. Backfilling: Fill the hole with the amended soil mixture, gently firming it around the roots. Avoid compacting the soil too tightly, as blueberries prefer well-draining soil.

    4. Fertilization:
Blueberries have specific nutrient requirements for optimal growth and fruit production. Follow these guidelines:

    a. Organic Fertilizers: Utilize organic fertilizers formulated specifically for acid-loving plants. Apply them in early spring before new growth emerges, adhering to the manufacturer’s instructions.

    b. Avoid Overfertilization: Excessive nitrogen can lead to vigorous foliage growth at the expense of fruit production. Always follow the recommended application rates to prevent overfertilization.

NOTE: Bone meal, good compost, and ammonium sulfate can be excellent fertilizers. Throwing some coffee grounds around your blueberry plants can be beneficial as well.

    5. Pollination:
Blueberries are self-fertile, meaning they can produce fruit without cross-pollination. However, planting multiple varieties in your garden can enhance fruit set and yield. Encourage pollinators like bees by incorporating other flowering plants nearby.

Time to Get Your Blueberry Plants!!
Planting and growing your own blueberries can be rewarding and promotes self-sustainability that can provide sustenance for years to come. By remembering the steps outlined in this guide, you can better your chances of successfully growing your blueberry plants. Remember to prioritize soil acidity and fertility by incorporating appropriate organic amendments, use correct planting techniques, and fertilize to promote growth. So e even say talking to your plants helps. Not so sure about that! 😄

Blueberries can be an excellent part of your homestead and survival garden. They also taste great in some blueberry muffins!! 👍

  • The Sheepdog Concept

    The Sheepdog Concept

I published this post on the Sheepdog Concept way back in 2016. Man, time flies. So much has changed, but, what hasn’t changed is the need for people to stand up and take action when needed.

January 13th, 1982: Air Florida Flight 90 crashed into the Potomac River. Only six of the 74 passengers survived the crash and ended up in the icy water. While a helicopter was able to come in and snatch four of the 6 passengers one disappeared under the water while another – Priscilla Tirado – helplessly struggled in the 33-degree water.  Unable to hold on to the rope lowered by the helicopter she began to drown. A bystander who witnessed the crash while he was walking home could not take it any longer. He could not stand there and watch this woman drown. He removed his coat and jumped in the water. He swam over to her as she lay just under the water, grabbed her – and pulled her to the bank.

    He saved her life.

This is the epitome of the Sheepdog.

    Sheep-Dog-D-Grossman

Not everyone can jump into action and put themselves into harm’s way. Not everyone can be a Sheepdog. Can it be learned or developed? Probably. People are just wired in different ways.

I’ve had several situations where things were happening nearby and I could not just sit back and not get involved. Sometimes it was preventing someone from getting hurt. Sometimes it was standing up for someone. Sometimes it was helping someone who was already hurt. I’ve been told I was stupid and ridiculous to possibly put myself in harm’s way. Risk evaluation has to be done but sometimes there just isn’t any time.

Saturday evening I was walking through Uptown Charlotte, NC with a friend. Walking down the sidewalk along the busy street I came towards a metal bench. I wasn’t looking at it but rather just walking with my friend talking. In an instant, I saw a child run around from the front of the bench to the back of it and then straight towards the car-filled street. I didn’t think about it I just moved. I ran and grabbed the kid – about 2 years old – just inches from the street. Did I save the kid’s life? I don’t know. The father noticed the kid as well and put his hand out in front of the child right at the same time I got to him.

My heart was pounding in my chest. My buddy said he didn’t see anything and just saw me take off in a blur. Some big, muscular guy said his heart was racing because he thought the kid was going to get hit. I almost said it but didn’t – “Why did you just stand there?”

The answer to that question is not everyone reacts the same nor has the capability to react the same.

As for me – I will continue to mind my own business until it’s time NOT to mind my own business.

    JR.

I often wonder what modern Patriots will need to do to save this country and bring it back to the condition that the Founders envisioned. Is it too late? Time will tell. Tecumseh poem…..from the movie “Act of Valor”

I’ve read this poem from the movie Act of Valor numerous times. It affects me. It gets me thinking in ways I’d rather not most of the time. It moves me in ways I cannot share as I cannot comprehend and put into words.

Read these words and let them saturate your soul…….

So live your life that the fear of death can never enter your heart. Trouble no one about their religion; respect others in their view, and demand that they respect yours. Love your life, perfect your life, beautify all things in your life. Seek to make your life long and its purpose in the service of your people. Prepare a noble death song for the day when you go over the great divide.

Always give a word or a sign of salute when meeting or passing a friend, even a stranger, when in a lonely place. Show respect to all people and grovel to none.

When you arise in the morning give thanks for the food and for the joy of living. If you see no reason for giving thanks, the fault lies only in yourself. Abuse no one and no thing, for abuse turns the wise ones to fools and robs the spirit of its vision.

When it comes your time to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with the fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song and die like a hero going home.

  • Sweetness for the SHTF: Strawberry Freezer Jam

Sweetness for the SHTF: Strawberry Freezer Jam

Rourke: Yes, I know I’ve published this recipe from Maine Prepper Girl, aka Kass, a few times over the past couple of years. Guess what is happening this weekend here in the woods of Maine? Yes!! Strawberry Freezer Jam!!!  I thought it was fitting to republish this and share it with those who may have missed it. Now – do you have a favorite recipe to share? Put in the comments below and I may highlight it in an article of its own.

    ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊

With strawberry picking season arriving across much of the country thought I would share this once again…….

My kids are technically adults now, but they still love freezer jam.  Even though we are apart in miles (at the moment) I still feel the need to perform the same seasonal traditions as if they were still with me.  I would not usually make this delicious treat until late summer in Maine, but here in South Carolina, the strawberries are ripe and ready. When I asked Mr. Rourke if he had ever had strawberry freezer jam he gave me a puzzled look and stated that he had never heard of such a thing! I was again amazed at yet another food he had not tried. To say he is a meat and potato guy is an understatement. As a matter of fact, I just had him try a Big Mac for the first time EVER last week! I would say that he has a 99% approval rating of the food I have him try. The one thing he is not fond of is sushi. I am afraid that is a losing battle, but as long as there are Steak and Sushi joints we both win!

Anyway, back to the freezer jam. This recipe is super easy and is found on the inside of the label of the container of RealFruit Instant Pectin by Ball. I believe you can also find a similar recipe on the inside of a box of Certo. The recipes differ by fruit being used. I have only ever used strawberries but maybe trying something different real soon. I made the jam outside of our camper for more space and because I like being outside. Thanks to our outdoor kitchen I was able to rinse the strawberries after hulling and slicing them.

Supplies: Three mixing bowls, funnel, strainer, potato masher, knife, mason jars, spoons, measuring spoons, and measuring cups.

Ingredients: Strawberries (about 6 quarts of strawberries made 11 8 ounce jars of jam), sugar, RealFruit Instant Pectin

What you see in the picture is double the amount plus some of the strawberries I needed. I was unsure and the extra berries were put to good use in a strawberry upside-down cake that was also delicious and enjoyed by my coworkers.

Cut, wash, strain, and mash strawberries. You will need 1 and 2/3 cup. Set aside.

In a clean bowl add 2/3 cup sugar and 2 tablespoons of pectin and mix together with a spoon.

Add the sugar/pectin mixture to the strawberries a little at a time, stir for 3 minutes until dissolved.

Put in jars using a funnel.

And there you have it! Strawberry Freezer Jam! Store in the freezer until ready to use then keep in the fridge. It is delicious on toast or on a PB & J. Rourke’s favorite way to have it is on the top of Breyer’s Extra Creamy Vanilla Ice Cream.

I know that this may not be a prepper item as it needs to be refrigerated to be stored but I like that it is a quick easy way to use up berries with very few ingredients.

    Have a great summer everyone!

  • The Four Rules of Gun Safety

The Four Rules of Gun Safety

Note: I published this a couple of years ago and safety with firearms cannot be emphasized enough. I’ve come across several people who are new to firearms ownership since my move to Maine and have utilized these safety rules in my training with them.

    Stay safe my friends.

    line

Over the past two months, I’ve worked with several new shooters and have gone over the four rules of gun safety – over and over and over again. I ended up seeing one couple at the range recently and witnessed safety infractions happening and had to speak up and say something. That was not at all what I taught them.

If you are new to shooting or maybe just never received the proper training read the following – and not just practice it but remember…and learn it.

    GUN SAFETY RULE #1:

Gun Safety, safety, Rule, loaded, shooting, preparedness, SHTF, firearms

Every gun should be treated like it’s loaded. Complacency and carelessness have cost far too many lives and it’s totally preventable. Positive a gun is empty? Treat it likes it’s not.

    GUN SAFETY RULE #2:

shooting, firearm, safety, gun, pistol, pointing, rule, gun safety

Handling a firearm comes with an awesome responsibility. Do not EVER point a firearm at something you are not willing to destroy – aka kill. This should be common sense but far too often it’s not. See someone break this rule accidentally? Let them know. It may be your life you end up saving.

A question that often comes up is – “Well, where should I point the gun?” This depends on where you are and where everyone else is. Bottom line is the gun should never point at any person. Many shooting ranges have rules stating all firearms must point downrange at all times. When carrying firearms – both pistols and long guns – I prefer to keep barrels pointing downward.

    GUN SAFETY RULE #3:

Accidental discharges are more often than not caused by a finger pulling a trigger when the shooter was NOT ready to shoot. This is a simple fix by keeping your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot.

    GUN SAFETY RULE #4:

guns, shooting, safety, rules, pistol, backstop, firearms, training, gun safety,

Never shoot at anything you have not absolutely identified AND know what is behind it.  Targets are often missed and you are accountable for every round exiting your gun. Bullets can travel great distances so you must know exactly where every shot will end up.

    *     *     *     *     *

As a gun owner, you are responsible for handling all firearms in a safe manner. As a responsible advocate for the 2nd Amendment, I would go further to say you are also responsible for watching out for others to prevent accidents and help educate.

    Be safe out there!

Preparing for the Next Great Depression: Successfully Growing Cucumbers in Your Garden

Cucumbers are not only a popular garden vegetable but also a refreshing addition to salads and a healthy snack. It’s such a rewarding experience to walk out to the garden and snip a couple cucumbers off the vines to have with dinner. In this continuing series on Preparing for the Next Great Depression, we will discuss growing cucumbers in your garden, including planting from seeds, fertilization techniques, preferred soil conditions, and container gardening options. Additionally, I’ve shared my list of favorite heirloom cucumber varieties. Let’s go!!!

PREPARING FOR THE NEXT GREAT DEPRESSION, GROWING CUCUMBERS, GARDEN, PREPAREDNESS, SHTF, SURVIVAL, PREPPER, HOW TO GROW CUCUMBERS, SURVIVAL GARDEN,

    Growing Cucumbers in the Garden:

    1. Planting:
    – Start cucumber seeds indoors 3-4 weeks before the last expected frost or sow them directly into the garden once the soil has warmed up. Plant the seeds about 1 inch deep and space them 12-24 inches apart in mounds that are 3-5 feet apart. I prefer mounds to rows as mounds help with drainage. Cucumber seeds typically germinate within 7-10 days.

🥒 GARDEN TIP: Provide a trellis or stake at planting time to support vine growth and prevent fruit from touching the ground. I’ve used tomato cages as well.

    2. Sunlight:
    – Choose a location in your garden that receives full sunlight for at least 6-8 hours a day. Cucumbers thrive in warm and sunny conditions.

    3. Soil:
    – Cucumbers prefer loose, well-draining soil with a pH level between 6.0 and 7.0.
    – Prepare the soil by incorporating organic matter such as compost or well-rotted manure. This improves soil fertility and moisture retention.

🥒 GARDEN TIP: If you have access to Black Kow brand composted cow manure it’s really good stuff. I’ve used it for years. My local Lowe’s carries it.

    4. Watering:
    – Cucumbers require consistent moisture to prevent bitterness and ensure proper fruit development. Water deeply and regularly, aiming to keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged.
    – Mulching around cucumber plants helps retain soil moisture and suppress weed growth.

    5. Fertilization:
    – Before planting, add a balanced fertilizer, such as water-soluble 10-10-10, to the soil following the package instructions.
    – Once the plants begin to flower, switch to a fertilizer higher in phosphorus, such as 5-10-10, to promote fruiting. Apply the fertilizer according to the recommended rates.

    6. Pollination:
    – Cucumbers rely on pollinators such as bees for successful fruit development. To attract pollinators, consider planting flowers nearby..

    7. Pest and Disease Control:
    – Monitor your plants regularly for common pests such as aphids, cucumber beetles, and powdery mildew.
    – Practice good garden habits by removing any diseased or infested plant material promptly.

    Harvesting:
    – Cucumber varieties have varying maturity times, typically ranging from 50 to 70 days from planting to harvest. Check the seed packet or plant label for specific information.
    – Regular harvesting is crucial to encourage continuous production. Harvest cucumbers when they reach the desired size, typically 6-8 inches in length(depending on variety). Overripe cucumbers can negatively affect future fruiting, so remove them promptly.

    Container Gardening Tips:
    – Select a large container with drainage holes to ensure proper water drainage. If holes are on the bottom keep the container off the ground to stop holes from plugging.
    – Use high-quality, well-draining potting mix enriched with compost or organic matter.
    – Cucumbers grown in containers may require more frequent watering, as containers tend to dry out faster than garden soil. Monitor soil moisture regularly and water when needed.
    – Provide a trellis or stake for vertical growth, securing them to the container for support. Again – tomato cages can work as well.

    Rourke’s Recommended Heirloom Cucumber Varieties:

Boston Pickling Cucumber: If you enjoy homemade pickles, the Boston Pickling cucumber is an excellent choice. These small to medium-sized cucumbers have bumpy skin and a crisp texture, making them ideal for pickling or adding to salads.

National Pickling Cucumber: Another favorite for pickling enthusiasts, National Pickling cucumbers are blocky and uniform in shape. They have a crunchy texture and can also be enjoyed fresh in salads. MY FAVORITE!! 👍

Straight Eight Cucumber: True to its name, the Straight Eight cucumber produces straight, uniform fruits with dark green skin. They have a classic cucumber flavor and are versatile for various culinary uses, including slicing, salads, and pickling.

Marketmore 76 Cucumber: This popular variety is known for its disease resistance and abundant production. Marketmore 76 cucumbers are dark green, firm, and have a slightly sweet taste. They are perfect for slicing and salads.

Spacemaster 80 – Are you dealing with limited space or growing in containers? The Spacemaster is the perfect high-producing, heirloom for you. Excellent for pickling or slicing, plant the Spacemaster indoors or out.

cucumbers, pickling, small, shtf, great depression, food, food storage, stocking up, inflation, prepper, preparedness, survival, survivalist

    Summary

By following the tips and techniques outlined here, you can grow a ton of cucumbers and avoid the cost of going to the grocery store. Whether you choose to grow cucumbers in the garden or in containers – proper planting, watering, fertilization, and pest control are essential for maximum production. Experiment with different heirloom cucumber varieties now to discover what works best for you now before you have to rely on the garden in a more serious situation.

BTW – fresh cucumbers are best sliced and sprinkled with salt and pepper. YUM!! 😋

    Happy gardening!

  • Is a Red Dawn scenario possible?

Is a Red Dawn scenario possible?

The original Red Dawn is one of my all-time favorite movies. I’m not exaggerating when I say I’ve watched it at least 50 times. Over the years I’ve read numerous discussions about how a foreign country would invade the domestic United States and having been involved in a fair amount of these I’ve found the vast majority of folks simply believe it could never happen. The consensus opinion was any invading force would not only have to fave the most superior military force in the world but the armed American citizenship as well.  I have to say my opinion over the years has varied and most of the time I leaned in the direction it was highly unlikely as invading countries know they would lose.

The “Red Dawn” scenario has been on my mind most recently as there are some serious security “issues” related to the US homeland.

First – the current administration in the White House has shown incredible weakness and poor decision-making. Consider the Chinese balloon that drifted across the United States navigating itself over multiple critical military bases. It’s been noted that this may have occurred multiple times in recent years and very possibly without any acknowledgment from the US armed forces. What if such a craft contained an EMP weapon and was able to disable a portion of the electrical grid of the United States? Beyond the significant economic impact – such an event could open the door to foreign forces taking advantage.

Second – the porous southern border. Countless millions have utilized it to gain access to the inner areas of the United States. There is little doubt out of those millions, numerous sleeper cells have taken root near their intended targets ready to strike when given the opportunity. These sleeper cells target energy infrastructure, communications networks, municipal water supplies, financial centers, and high-population centers. The reports of Chinese and Russian nationalists crossing the southern border are only an indication of what is really happening. The reports are of those who were caught. How many have gained access to the interior and are completely unknown. Exactly. Unknown.

attacks on US power grid, Red Dawn, terrorism, United States

Third – let’s consider a few things and get them out on the table:

    • Many of us would shake our heads at the idea of a Red Dawn scenario or even any foreign direct attack as it’s simply just crazy, right? As we look back over the last decade or so I would suggest many of the events that have impacted our lives were unpredictable and could have been looked at as “crazy” if it had been predicted just a short time prior to the actual event. Basically – we are living in extremely unpredictable times.
    • Direct attacks within the borders of the United States may be used in a campaign to get the citizenship to be against any conflict with China/Russia and pressure the government to back down.
    • Any conflict with China would eliminate all trade between the USA and China. This would have a drastic negative impact on the US economy. Beyond the massive inflationary trend which would occur, mass layoffs and supply chain shortages would become the norm. Most cannot fathom the true impact of an absence of trade with China.
    • Russia has been mapping European and US critical infrastructure both at sea as well as on land. With NATO’s responsibility for the destruction of the Nordstrom pipeline, Russia has openly stated that they will target critical internet and other communication lines at sea. Consider that Chinese balloon that recently flew over the United States. Is China sharing the data collected with its Russian friends?
    • Alaska is only 55 miles from Russia.
    • Any large invasion of the United States would require access to major sea ports along the east coast and west coast. This presents a significant challenge to both China and Russia. On the east coast, there are several large ports including Charleston, SC. Unfortunately for the invading forces nearby military bases provide ample protection. On the west coast, California offers several ports including San Diego, and like on the east – there are several US military bases nearby. Further north near Portland and Seattle there lies the possible answer for an invading force. A large port that can handle the arrival of many troops, large ships, and the unloading of vast quantities of equipment without the threat from nearby military resources.  Maybe. Can you imagine the reaction of the pot-smoking citizens of Seattle who hold up their peace signs and gun-banning propaganda seeing Russians unloading Soviet T-72 tanks?

Now – yes, I admit it’s not likely that a Chinese and Russian invasion of the mainland United States will happen. I will also admit I never would have imagined that the government would have 100% lied to the American people about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, nor would have lied about 15 days t stop the spread, or that those who were vaccinated couldn’t spread the virus.

Most importantly – what do YOU think?

    Connecting with John Rourke

Putting this back out there again for those who may have missed it and a reminder for everyone else. Back in 2010, I started my first survival and preparedness blog with the goal of connecting with others that were like-minded. Over the years I’ve developed some lifelong relationships with people I’ve connected with and hope that continues. Shortly before the last Presidential election, I was targeted by several social media companies and accounts were deleted with no warnings or explanations. For several months I was bitter and determined not to start any new accounts. I came around to different thinking in that I would use these platforms to my and others’ benefit by continuing to spread my beliefs and share the information I know to be vital to our future.

In other words, I decided not to give up.

I’ve created a “link tree” which I maintain as a one-stop shop for people to go to find out what’s going on with me, what I’m up to, and get access to more information.

  • Potatoes in a Bucket: Grow Your Own Spuds, No Backyard Required!

Potatoes in a Bucket: Grow Your Own Spuds, No Backyard Required!

As we prepare for likely continued inflation and rumored food shortages, growing as much of our own food as possible just makes sense. Over the years I’ve grown potatoes in the ground as well as in containers such as buckets with fairly decent success. Lessons learned help to gain success later on when growing potatoes in a bucket(meaning my screwups early on have helped me do better now😄).

Want to grow potatoes to save money, increase your self-reliance, or just have fun? You don’t have a sprawling backyard or a green thumb? Fear not, follow spud lover! In this article, we’ll provide some guidance and ideas on growing potatoes in a bucket(food grade, right?). So grab your bucket, put on your insect repellent, and let’s get ready!

Step 1: Selecting the Right Bucket
First things first, find yourself a bucket. Early on I used Home Depot buckets, but now I go with food-grade buckets. Choose a 5-gallon bucket to allow the potatoes to grow comfortably. Remember, you want your taters to feel like they’re living in a five-star hotel, not a cramped camper. Believe me – I know camper living.

Many containers will work for potatoes……

    Step 2: Drilling Drainage Holes
Grab a drill (or borrow one from your handy neighbor) and create some drainage holes in the bottom of the bucket. We want our potatoes to stay cozy, not drowned. So be generous with the holes and let the excess water drain easily. I have a 3/4″ spade that I use to drill 5 holes in the bottom of my buckets. The larger the hole the more difficult to clog. After the bottom holes are drilled, move the side of the bucket and drill a hole every 3-4 inches all around the bottom about 1/2″-1″ from the very bottom. I use a 1/4″ – 1/3″ drill bit for this part. I want water to drain but not too much.

    Step 3: The Soil Dance
Potatoes love well-draining soil, so let’s whip up a mixture that will make them feel right at home. Combine equal parts of compost, potting soil, and throw in some peat miss if available. Mix them together with a spoon or, if you’re feeling particularly adventurous, with your bare hands (don’t forget to wash them afterward!). If peat moss is not available add more potting soil as typically potting soil contains a decent amount of peat miss. A budget-friendly way of adding something that will loosen the soil to allow good drainage is by adding old, dead leaves. Crumble the leaves up and mix in the soil well.

Step 4: Filling Up the Bucket
Now that your soil mixture is ready, fill the bucket about one-third full. We’re leaving room for the magic to happen! It’s like inviting your potato guests to a surprise party where they can grow and thrive. I’ve added a couple inches of mulch to the bottom or gravel to facilitate drainage. We do not want the holes to clog with the soil.

    Step 5: Seed Selection
Choosing the right type of potato is crucial for a successful bucket adventure. Opt for varieties that are known for their compact growth and high yield, such as ‘Yukon Gold,’ ‘Red Pontiac,’ or ‘Fingerling.’ These spuds are like the A-list celebrities of the potato world—they know how to make an impression.

yukon gold potato, seed, prepper, growing potatoes, container potatoes, prepper, shtf, inflation, survival gardening, growing your own food

    Step 6: Planting the Spuds
Time to introduce your potatoes to their new cozy home! Take a few seed potatoes (or large chunks of regular potatoes with a couple of eyes) and gently place them on the soil surface, eyes facing up. Space them a few inches apart, like polite dinner guests who don’t want to invade each other’s personal space. I often place two seed potatoes per 5-gallon bucket. If the seed potatoes are very small maybe three.

Step 7: The Tower of Taters
As your potatoes grow, they’ll need more soil to bury their tubers. Gradually add more soil to the bucket, covering the lower stems but leaving the top leaves exposed. Keep repeating this process as your potatoes reach for the sky. Think of it as a potato skyscraper, with each floor offering a potential spud surprise! As the plant grows cover it with your rich soil mixture.

    Step 8: Watering with Love
Water your bucket of spuds generously, but make sure the excess water can drain away. Remember, we’re aiming for happy, not soggy, potatoes. Regular watering is key, but don’t drench them like you’ve just hit a water buffalo with your truck. Just keep the soil moist, not waterlogged.

Step 9: Potato Love and Patience
Now comes the hardest part—waiting! Potatoes take their own sweet time to grow. Be patient and tend to your potatoes with love. They’ll reward you with their starchy goodness when the time is right. Everyone together…..3….2…..1……”MASHED!!!!”

    Conclusion:
Growing potatoes in a bucket is a delightful and easy way to bring the joy of gardening…..and growing your own $hit. With a touch of humor and a pinch of patience, you can enjoy the satisfaction of harvesting your very own homegrown spuds.

Now, while growing potatoes in a bucket may seem like a simple adventure, it does require some care and attention. Keep an eye out for any unwanted visitors like pesky insects or potato-loving critters. You don’t want to end up with a potato heist on your hands! Stay vigilant, and if needed, deploy your best potato-guarding techniques.

One of the perks of growing potatoes in a bucket is the ability to control their environment. So, if the weather outside turns frightful or your potatoes start craving a tropical vacation, simply move the bucket indoors or to a more suitable location. Hey, we all have those moments when we need a change of scenery, right?

Oh – when do you harvest those little bundles of tastefulness? When you see the plants that have shot upwards out of the tops of the buckets die off – it’s time! Dump the soil out and search for those spuds that will find themselves on the plates of loved ones with wonderful garnishment and a ton of butter!

Disclaimer: The author cannot be held responsible for any overwhelming potato obsession from reading this article. Proceed with caution and enjoy the potato-filled journey responsibly. After all – we are only human. 👍

    Project Update: Survival Seed Bank

Last year I made the video below showing a survival seed bank I was putting together. At the time I was living full-time in a camper and had no land for planting a garden. Fast forward a year or so and here we are in the woods of Maine on 5 acres and I just completed the planting of our garden. Many of the seeds I used came from the seed bank featured in the video.

I’ve used flower and vegetable seeds that were 3 years old and had no major issues. The germination rate at the 3-year mark was around 75%. Not too bad. Moving forward I’ll rotate the seeds in my seed banks every year or two at the max. For true long-term seed storage check out FrostySeed.com. They offer freeze-dried seeds which can be stored away for many years. I consider those my “last resort seeds” as they have the longest shelf life. What a fantastic prep!!

“A lot of weeding needs to be done. Strawberries and tomatoes planted.”

“Several raised beds added. This one has lettuce and broccoli.”

    …..more to come!

Well – here’s the video. Would appreciate it if you smash that Like button and share it with like-minded folks. I’ll be making a “video tour” of the cabin soon and showing some progress in the garden.

  • It’s Getting Worse…..

    It’s Getting Worse…..

I have a love-hate relationship with the ability for this country to be saved from a complete implosion. When I look back over the last 50 years of not only how much this country has changed, but the extent to which my respect and admiration for who we are as a people and what we can do when we need to has also changed. I am one of the most patriotic people you will find. This was instilled in me by my father who served in multiple branches of the military and had tremendous respect for Ronald Reagan. I have shed tears while saying the Pledge of Allegiance and singing the National Anthem.  Today my admiration is geared more towards the Founders, the Constitution, and the ideal of the United States – not the government we have now nor what we have become.

What about you? Have you experienced anything similar?

In the video above I discuss a recent trip to Walmart(I’m sure you can only imagine) and share a few thoughts on the state of the country. I recorded this sitting in my loft at the cabin and looking out the upstairs window into the deep woods of Maine. My perspective remains the same on what we can do to deal with the ever-changing radical environment we now call society:

    • Get out of the cities.
    • Become as self-reliant and self-sufficient as possible.
    • Insulate yourself from the effects of society, government, and big corp to the maximum extent possible.
    • Prepare accordingly.

Would appreciate it if you’d watch the video, give it a thumbs up – and comment if possible. It helps the algorithm.

  • WW3…..Russia……Cuban Missle Crisis

    WW3…..Russia……Cuban Missle Crisis

With all the insanity going on in the world I have been finding that Glenn Beck is doing an exceptional job navigating the specifics, facts, and possibilities with many unreal situations that are going on. In the video below – which I implore you to watch – Glenn does an excellent job relaying the current situation with Russia and Ukraine and comparing it to a “what if” situation related to Mexico and the United States.

I’ve often compared the Ukraine-Russia situation to the Cuban Missile Crisis. With the potential for Soviet missiles in our backyard, the United States stood up and put a stop to it. How different is this from the infiltration of NATO via Ukraine in Russia’s back door? Yes – I realize it is much more complex than that. Regardless – Glenn does a good job providing an opinion I largely agree with.

Please watch the video and share your opinion below. Disagree with me? Hey – that’s fine! If you agree with me, well, you are very smart!! LOL. Just kidding….maybe.

I’ll be continuing my series on preparing for the next Great Depression soon and offering a thought or two on the complexity of Russia, Ukraine, China, and Taiwan. There are a lot of moving parts and pieces of the puzzle and anyone who tells you they know what’s going to happen is wrong.

The best we can do is share ideas, best guesses, and what we need to do to prepare.

Take care all. I have a feeling the next couple of years are going to be very interesting and we can do better preparing together than preparing part.

    Questions on Moscow Drone Attack

If you’ve not heard it’s being reported that Moscow was attacked by an estimated 8 drones. Early Tuesday morning explosions could be heard around the city and damage to several buildings occurred. There appears to be no death although at least two people with injuries have been reported. Moscow is approx 310 miles from the Ukrainian border and no one has taken responsibility for the strike. Russia has stated they intercepted all the drones and either forced them to crash with electronic countermeasures or shot them down with air defense.

    Questions:

Who is responsible for this strike?

Why did they do it? What did they hope to accomplish?

What will it mean long term?

    Let’s hear those theories!!
