In this short video, I show a potable commo kit I made out of a couple of Baofeng GT-3TP 8 watt radios. A small pouch with needed cables, charging options, extra batteries, and of course antennas.

    If you decide to upgrade radios, you may want to look at the Baofeng UV-S9 Plus. It has the same form factor, but has direct charging for USB. That would allow you to ditch the different charging cradles and only carry the one charging cord. The same setup is available for the UV-5R, but is a replacement battery that makes the radio about 1-3/4″ longer. The S9 battery is 2200mAh and the 5R replacement battery is 3800mAh.
    Depending on your setup, you may need some additional equipment but they are stuff you may or should have with you anyways for charging other electronics.
    For example, I keep the following with me to charge nearly any electronics I use:
    Battery pack – usually 20K mAh or better
    1 AC USB charger
    1 12vdc USB charger
    2 Type-c cords
    Adapters for Type-C to any other type such as Lightning, Micro or Mini USB. Type-A to Type-C adapter(s)
    Baofeng USB charging cable.

    I have other stuff I add to the kit as needed, such as a battery charger that will charge both lithium and NiMH batteries up to 18650’s. I have worked to use as much equipment that uses commonly available cords (Baofeng USB is not gas station available common) as I can. This reduces the number of cords I need to carry around and makes replacing them fairly easy.
