In the first season of the classic prepper-tv series Jericho, Jake and his brother Eric travel to a nearby town looking for medicine for their father. Long story short they get in a gunfight with a government-hired private military contractors and barely get away. Unfortunately, Eric left his wallet behind in the hospital they were searching and the contractors found it. Once Eric realizes he left his wallet he tells Jake who tries to comfort him by saying not to worry and they have other things to do.
The reality is Jake was concerned. He was worried that the mercenaries would come to Jericho and look for payback.
The episode ends with a scene showing Jake sitting on the back of his parents’ couch with all the lights out looking out into the nearby streets. Jake was taking responsibility for the security of his family and while everyone else was sleeping he stood guard.
There was something about this scene that really got to me. Jake had a lot of world experience that others couldn’t comprehend. He understood the evil that man could carry out and the simple act of dropping a wallet could bring that evil to his door. He didn’t complain. He didn’t fight with his brother and tell him how much of an idiotic thing he did. No. Jake took charge and responsibility and watched over his family.
I think it’s about time to start Jericho Season 1 over again.
