Here is the ninth of a weekly installment discussing an episode of the popular TV series – Jericho – which aired originally back in 2006. Every Tuesday night we are watching an episode and then will discuss what happens the following day. It can be watched free on Netflix or purchased on VUDU. Jericho is also available on DVD.
Summary:
The mercenaries from Rogue River are on the way. Ravenwood arrives outside of town at the Richmond Ranch. Stanley’s confrontation with them ends peacefully and he bolts to town to tell Jake. The men of Jericho decide to take a stand at the bridge leading into town. Jake and Eric disagree on a plan to blow the bridge to stop the mercenaries.
Emily struggles as today is the day she was supposed to marry Roger.
Discussion:
A couple things I took from this episode:
- Someone has to take charge of those who need it. Hawkins and Jake take the lead on the bridge to establish barriers and organize the security force.
- Tough decisions have to be made. Both Jake and Eric make tough decisions and are confident they are right.
- Flares. Although radio’s are a great way to communicate there could be reasons they may not be able to be used. A flare is used to signal Ravenwood was coming. Not a bad idea to put back a few flare guns and extra flares.
- Networking is critically important. Going it alone isn’t likely to lead to a high level of success.
- A bottle of Scotch can lead to a good time.
As what was commented last week I was surprised the armament on the bridge was not more “modern” with at least some AR’s. Of course remember this was 2006 and the popularity and ownership of modern “black rifles” was not back then what it is today.
Firearms and knowing how to use them is of paramount importance.

I binged ahead but I remember thinking that during that episode that we had already been familiar with IEDs in the Middle East by then. I was surprised they didn’t put some on the road and sides of road with minimal risk to themselves, they knew Ravenwood (stupidly) would come straight down the road.
Maybe I’m not remembering the episode well.
Watched it last night. I remember when it aired originally and a few sites had threads on the episode the following day – the “would have set a ambush, waste them and take their gear” was the common theme I remembered. Most people aren’t willing to fight especially if they don’t know what is going on. The blowing up a bridge was a bit extreme but Jake and Robert made a decision (more importantly a PLAN) others didn’t want to do. But yeah, it was 2006 and things were a little different back then, that community wouldn’t have all the AR’s AK’s of today because it was a farming/hunting community where bolt actions/shotguns were more common so those made sense – just kind of cracked me up the rifles without sights or scopes attached.
Anyone else notice how Ravenwood was able to just roll up to Stanley’s farm? In Grid down you WILL have to have some kind of Perimeter security devices that most people don’t think of using. Flare gun was a good idea, just need to make sure they are appropriate ones with enough altitude for line of sight use. ex – the 12ga Orion red flares burn for 7 seconds and can hit up to 500 feet altitude in calm weather. A surplus parachute flare are almost 700 feet and visible up to 30 miles away at night.
And yes, having a few bottles of some good scotch/whiskey put away can make a difference in getting through some rough times or barter.
Loved the show. Love the comments and points made. Have a great day.
