From the Desk of John Rourke – August 14th, 2019

Note: Every so often I’ll throw out some random thoughts on a variety of topics. This comes “From the Desk” of John Rourke.

Last week was a long stressful one at work. Trying to relax this past weekend and will be traveling this upcoming one. I’ve purposely NOT watched the news, however, can’t help but hear all the talk on gun control.

The Left spouting antigun dribble is nothing new especially after some psychopath goes on a killing spree. With Democrat candidates for President calling for gun bans and confiscation this would have been a perfect time for politicians on the Right to promote the Constitution, gun rights, and destroy Liberal arguments with facts and logic. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen. President Trump openly backed Red Flag laws and universal background checks.

Pathetic.

Even newcomer and Conservative favorite Dan Crenshaw has backed Red Flag laws.

If Trump backs any successful gun control legislation or laws via Executive Action his bid for 2020 will be an effort in futility.

Pretty amazing the Sony Walkman came out 40 years ago. Wow!!

Food. You hear that word and it likely conjures up visions of frustration from those trying to lose weight or images or a favorite meal(steak on the grill with squash and corn on the cob. Food storage is simply not sexy. If it was there would be magazine covers galore filled with images of canned freeze dried food and hard red winter wheat. Yeah – rice would be there too.

So – preppers frequently go out there and stock up on all the guns and ammo they can afford without giving food its due diligence.

If you have two AR’s, tons of magazines and a few thousand rounds of ammo – and a months worth of food:  you’re guilty.

Welcome to the club. 😉

What happened with the “Epstein suicide” is more obvious than running out of gas out in the country with the head cheerleader in your car.

The national debt continues its aggressive path upwards as we approach 23 trillion dollars. The government continues to spend money it doesn’t have. We are past the point of no return and the debt clock will NEVER tick backward.  It is only a matter of time that the massive debt and printing of money creates heightened inflation and devaluing of currency.

Like with several other scenarios looming over us – the time to prepare is NOW.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. This world is not my home, I’m just passing through! You’d think we’d realize that water, beans and band aids are as important as bullets – you’d think!!! Have some time in the Word to refresh you! Make the most of your day.

    John,
I’m afraid you are right about Trump’s chances if he goes along with the Red Flag issue. I’ve seen a lot of comments from various articles stating this. I’m prone to thinking that way until I stop and look. Trump is not perfect. He will make some blundering mistakes. But you have to weigh his mistakes, which will be one at a time and thereby maybe not many, compared to a Democrat who will dedicate their entire term to destroying the country as we know it. I’m at the point of taking the devil I know compared to the devil I don’t know. I really hate to be forced to vote for the lesser of the evils, but that;s what our country has fallen to.

I feel your pain Oren and can identify with your comments. You’re 100% correct on a Democrat trying to destroy our country the way we know it.

Current gun laws are often not followed by judges here in MA. Supposed to get a free one year trip to jail for illegal firearms possession, have never seen it happen. I’ve seen people with awful felony firearms history and current charges released on probation. Unbelievable. People write in to local papers and wonder what judges are thinking.

By now, most people that are paying attention, should have their guns, mags, and basic ammunition requirements met. Some don’t and I don’t know what they are waiting for; prices are excellent, on all fronts, if you do your research.

Food ain’t sexy, but starving sucks. I like having FD or low maintenance foods available for the first 30-60 days (it keeps the smell of cooking food down during that 1st “rush”), then off to way cheaper bulk foods. We have been at it a while, and shopping sales and seasonal buying really keeps the cost down.

JR, I agree with you on Trump and the red flag laws,we have it in FL,, but if he does not get re-elected the other options are far worse.

      Concur
I will for Trump even if he throws the left a bone on gun control. If he loses the left will go full throttle on your liberties!!!

    2. JR says:

I agree John P. The other options are far worse but as I’ve said previously there’s a line to be drawn. Being involved in the political process is becoming more and more irrelevant.

Trump is light years better then any dem!!!!! Conservatives have stayed home in too many elections because the perfect candidate was not available, clnton, obama….

    watch The News™ programming

We easily avoid The News® programming.

The last time we owned a television set was sometime last century.
We have zero interest in televisionprogramming.
    Or radioprogramming.
    Or newspaperprogramming.

Our neighbor Lisa heard this, and panicked… “But but but don’t you want to keep current on current events !?!”

    Nope.

    Well put Rourke-
I will vote for Trump. I wear my pink Trump 2020 hat to many places-others I am
    selective .
With the severe weather changes- floods ,droughts wildfires etc. it just makes sense to stock up on food.

…this past month i have been “practicing” not having an operative kitchen sink. (Though i am “cheating” and DO have running hot/cold water.) As much as i would prefer NOT to practice the important daily household chore of cooking and cleaning up from meals without, it has brought up a few holes in my routine as i had imagined it would be, IF the water and sewer services disappear.

The first thing i needed was a sturdy plastic dishpan for each of the two sinks. (Yes, i already had plastic dishpans but prefered not to repurpose a foot soaking tub or my garden/plant toting tubs.) Two would be needed whether you have one big or two smaller sinks since washing and rinsing occurs regardless. (Having backups in case of an unforseen issue probably would be good…you military guys have drilled that “one is none/two is one” thought deep into my heart, thank you.

Buckets were the next item i found handy since carrying the used water to it’s final resting place in the dishpan can result in water where it’s NOT useful if one is not entirely steady or the pan is very full. Having the right size and sturdy handles improved my contentedness with the task as time went on. (It is easier to be “contented in all things” if the best tools are at hand.) The dishpans may be used in an outdoor setting as well and for laundering smaller items if it wouldn’t compromise sanitary considerations. This will be a HUGE issue…keeping it all sanitary. Unless you are deliberate in this, well, i hate to think…

As time DID go on, as well as the drought condition here in the upper Midwest, using the water WELL seemed a satisfying thing. Instead of carrying the used water, (that wasn’t too soapy/greasy,) fifteen feet to pour down the toilet or bathroom sink, i began carrying it thirty or more feet to water the gardens outside. Now it seems intolerable to waste it…how much MORE so if one has to carry/collect the water for not only kitchen use but EVERY use ?!? Thinking of the amount of water i use when washing, preparing and canning or freezing food from the garden overwhelms me! Reusing the fairly clean rinse water for laundry and bathing would become second nature if not needed for food growing.

Have considered what one would do when needing to “discard” well used water in the winter time…everyone’s situation will have it’s own solution i am sure.

As i have developed my routine, i have found little shortcuts and tweaks to help. You will too. Was thinking for those who haven’t developed the habit of wearing aprons, you might consider obtaining a “few.” Not the lacy, ruffled impractical kind but those that truly protect one’s clothing from the hazards of cooking, cleaning up and the unexpected oopsies of life. Really…much easier to wash an apron rather than your clothes. Make sure to have at least one pocket for the cloth hankie you will use when the tissues are gone.

So…dishpans, buckets, aprons, hankies…What can you add to the list?
