This past week I stopped by a local grocery store here in South Carolina to check out the “food shortages” I keep hearing about. I was pretty surprised by what I found and this is the worst I’ve seen over the past several months.
Keep stocking up. I do not see this trend reversing or slowing down anytime soon.

Starting to see it up here in central NH. One store is stocked. The other is getting bare. Strange.
RC – Thanks for sharing your observations. I’ve seen some similar situations here in SC with individual items but not throughout the store….yet.
Georgia – Same as you John. Slim pickings in some things and other things (meats) sky high. Went to Publix last night to get some bread and was worried that they wouldn’t have any but they did. Not a lot of choices but they had it.
Thanks Fred.

We’re in the Ohio Valley. I don’t know if it’s just my store or company wide, but the products that you can order from our local Walmart for pickup or delivery are very limited. Not only do they frequently say that something is out of stock when they have plenty on hand, but they also routinely change the products that are available to buy. You might order this item this month, and next month they’ll tell you that they don’t even sell it. Fortunately, I can have my kids pick up things that can’t be delivered (which is how I’ve learned about all this), but I feel bad for the people who are solely dependent on the delivery service.
Having said that, we’re seeing major shortages in all store-brand products, canned vegetables and soups, dry goods, and cold medicines. I haven’t been able to buy creamed corn in nearly a year, and cream cheese is limited to one package per order. They’re frequently out of bread and dish soap. Dry dog food is impossible to find in bags larger than 15 pounds. Dog biscuits are in very short supply. Powdered milk is only available every few months. Canned meats are rarely in stock, other than Spam and tuna. People are buying in bulk because there’s a good chance they won’t be able to find this particular item for another couple months. My mother now shops at 3 different major grocery stores because she is seeing the same things. Not only have the prices gone up, but we’re having to buy more expensive brands than usual for the things we can’t live without.
Also, for those interested in getting food from Walmart without leaving your house, be aware of the difference between “delivery” and “shipping”. “Delivery” will cost you $10 for the store and roughly a $20 tip for the driver. “Shipping” is free. The problem with the latter is that it doesn’t include any fresh or frozen products and you’ll get multiple shipments, but the time it takes to get your groceries is about the same. For both services, you just have to spend $35.
WOW SingleMom – thank you doe sharing all that info. No creamed corn for all that time? Unreal. I hope things improve, however, with my own recent experience seeing things getting worse I am planning to start putting back more than usual.
Everything is very expensive. Items that are scarce include pet food = especially pet canned food and Cream cheese is in short supply.
Cannot find any chopped broccoli for a very long time.
Hash is hard to fine.

Thanks vandal67 – I just got back from a quick trip to Walmart and seeing the same.
I found with BJ’s, if the are low on an item you will only be able to get it at the brick and mortar store.
