From the Desk of John Rourke – October 11th, 2017

It appears the outrage of the NFL kneeling players is having an effect. Owners are suggesting there may need to be a rule change requiring that players stand during the National Anthem. To hear even the consideration is a win for Patriots everywhere.

Over on a Facebook page I run I’ve been having a good debate with a gentleman who believes guns should be banned. Through several back and forth points and dealing with much ignorance and propaganda I made a declaration I rarely hear especially in gun control debates –

“The purpose of the 2nd Amendment isn’t hunting nor just defending one’s home. Its purpose is to provide citizens a means which to take this country back from the grasp of an out of control government. That isn’t done with revolvers and bolt action rifles.”

No restrictions. No permits. Period.

The argument that the Constitution was written for personal defense and hunting is ridiculous.

    JR,

    This is for You,

Quote from Judge Alex Kozinski of the 9th U.S. Court of Appeals, dissenting opinion in Silveira v. Lockyer :

“All too many of the other great tragedies of history— Stalin’s atrocities, the killing fields of Cambodia, the Holocaust, to name but a few—were perpetrated by armed troops against unarmed populations. Many could well have been avoided or mitigated, had the perpetrators known their intended victims were equipped with a rifle and twenty bullets apiece, as the Militia Act required here. See Kleinfeld Dissent at 5997-99. If a few hundred Jewish fighters in the Warsaw Ghetto could hold off the Wehrmacht for almost a month with only a handful of weapons, six million Jews armed with rifles could not so easily have been herded into cattle cars.

My excellent colleagues have forgotten these bitter lessons of history. The prospect of tyranny may not grab the headlines the way vivid stories of gun crime routinely do. But few saw the Third Reich coming until it was too late. The Second Amendment is a doomsday provision, one designed for those exceptionally rare circumstances where all other rights have failed—where the government refuses to stand for reelection and silences those who protest; where courts have lost the courage to oppose, or can find no one to enforce their decrees. However improbable these contingencies may seem today, facing them unprepared is a mistake a free people get to make only once.”

On the topic of athletic celebrities kneeling during our National Anthem; Being a Veteran, I defended the rights of American’s, which includes freedom of speech and expression. That being said, it is freedom from punishment by the government, not from other consequences. If their employer feels that they are misrepresenting their interests, then the employer is free to release them from their position. The Fans can also decide not to patronize their employers events. I for instance can still think it ironic that they are exercising the very rights that the subject of their ‘protest’ represents, and therefore think that they are spoiled and childlike. Still they have the right to do it, and as they are not hurting anyone or damaging anybody’s property, then I say exercise your rights. I wonder if the President and media stopped drawing attention to it, how long it would be an issue in the minds of the public though. I mean I thought racism was gone in these United States of America until Barry Soetoro and his wife started making it an issue again. Maybe Booker T. Washington was right when in his 1911 book titled “My Larger Education”, on page 118, he wrote:

“There is another class of coloured people who make a business of keeping the troubles, the wrongs and the hardships of the Negro race before the public. Having learned that they are able to make a living out of their troubles, they have grown into the settled habit of advertising their wrongs – partly because they want sympathy and partly because it pays. Some of these people do not want the Negro to lose his grievances, because they do not want to lose their jobs.”

    Just my two cents on that topic. As for my feelings on the Constitution and gun control, I don’t need to reinvent the wheel on those arguments when others have done it so well in the past;

“To conquer a nation, first disarm its citizens.”
    ― Adolf Hitler

“If someone has a gun and is trying to kill you, it would be reasonable to shoot back with your own gun.”
― Tenzin Gyatso (Dalai Lama) May 2001 at the “Educating the Heart Summit.”

Sounds like two people with different intentions agree, but this isn’t about logic it is about politics and emotions. If it were about logic and common sense, we may be hearing about banning alcohol since there have been over 250 fatalities since the Las Vegas Shooting due to Drunk Driving (based on the average). Just sayin

“Our forefathers wouldn’t have agreed to a limit on the amount of ball and powder they could carry, or to a list of muskets they were forbidden to own, or an outright ban on newfangled lever-action repeaters.Their righteous outrage and uncompromising defiance would have been immediate, unstoppable, and the stuff of legend.”

Yes unfortunately it has taken a threat of the NFLs losing money to get them to return to
respect for our beloved flag. Lightning

  6. Uncle George says:

The NFL is off in my house forever unless they all donate their entire years earnings to wounded veterans. Since that will never happen, I will never watch these spoiled children again. They have shown their true colors, standing for the anthem now will not change that. The NFL isn’t what it used to be anyway. It won’t be long until it is flag football, although with all the penalties they call for every little thing now, I guess it already is flag football.
