From the Desk of John Rourke – May 9th, 2017

Finished lining the galvanized trash can I bought with foam in preparation to make an “EMP Cache”.  Time to start filling and then sealing.

Speaking of EMP. The following is a short – approx 13 minutes – podcast excerpt where Dr. Peter Vincent Pry discusses the dangers posed by North Korea. I appreciate Capt. Michaels for sending it in.

The Berkey Guy has a special going on with their line of organic food storage products. As an example, their Survive2Thrive Organic 40 Days/Night bucket is on sale for only $259.99. That is a little over $6.00 per day.

Check it out.

As I plan my “Lightweight AR Build” and selecting components I decided on a Mag Tactical Ultra-Lightweight Magnesium Lower purchased from ClassicFirearms.com. There are pro’s and con’s using this lower, however, in the end, it fits in the equation perfectly.

Although gun control efforts with the current Congressional makeup would go nowhere the desire from the anti-gun crowd remains. Reports of gangs in Chicago using assault rifles will only add fuel to the fire. This past Sunday 10 people were shot by 2 men armed with assault rifles.

There are many reasons why so many love their Kindle and Amazon Fire tablets. One huge advantage is you could literally go years without every buying a book to read as there are tons of free eBooks available. Don’t have a Kindle or Fire? No problem. There are apps that can be installed on most any cell phone or computer for free. No excuses!

NOTE: If you see a free preparedness eBook that you’re interested in get it now. Prices change often and there is no way to tell how long the book will remain free. Before purchasing a free Kindle book on Amazon make certain the book is still free by making sure the price is $0.00. If it lists a price or says “read for free” or has a price for prime members the book is not free anymore.

You can use cardboard to line the galvanized trash can for EMP protection. Do not forget to line the inside of the cover as well.

  2. GotUR6 says:

You only need to line the cover if you overfill the can and push the lid down against the contents. The lining itself provides no protection from the pulse, just insulates against contact with the metal which carries the current when an EMP occurs…

I’ve read enough about EMP’s to know that nobody knows doodly squat about what will really happen. It’s all theory, often conveyed as fact. There is nothing better than reading comments from two electrical engineers with lots of letters after their title arguing the opposite position of each other. It all sounds impressive, but until it happens, we will not know. Having said that, one thing that makes sense to me with your garbage can project is to seal the top with a metal tape with conductive adhesive. They sell it on Amazon (go figure). There are not many arguments against the theory that a long seam will pose more of an issue than small holes.

    1. Capt.Michaels says:

Not sure Uncle George, but there have been some solid discussions on here about this. Perhaps if GoingGray58 is monitoring today he can supply his information? Or perhaps you can provide information to support your comment. I don’t mean that disrespectful either. That way we can all be informed with what information you have.

Rourke has provided videos here that show the above listed option demo’d and working. The only concern and retort by GoingGray58 was at what at level the EMP hits. There is a Very specific reason Rourke posted this on here for today.

    2. JR says:

I agree Uncle George that there is a lot of information that contradicts itself out there proclaimed by “experts”. Due to the need to take some form of action regarding EMP prep I have to draw the conclusion as to what will work and what will not as inaction will get me no where. I was planning on getting tape to seal so I’ll check out the stuff on Amazon – getting ready to place an order.

Yeah – I have often said something similar as no one knows for sure – but I have a decent idea on the possibilities.

      1. Uncle George says:

JR- I wasn’t trying to be a wet blanket. I agree that we need to try something based on our own best interpretation of the information out there. One thing for certain, if we just leave stuff out in the open, it will fail after an EMP. At least trying something may actually work, and it would be an excellent advantage. It seems one of the biggest conflicted theories is to ground or not to ground, and if you do ground, how deep should the rods be. When two EE’s can’t agree, what chance does my dumb butt have? My personal opinion after reading whatever I can find is, do not ground. No reason to attract attention.

        1. JR says:

I agree Uncle George on the grounding. I have several that I trust and they have much more knowledge than I – and they say do not ground.

I understand your perspective. No “wet blanket” here. Thanks for sharing.

“This past Sunday 10 people were shot by 2 men armed with assault rifles.” Yup, and the 10 were shot (2 dead) at a memorial for a shooting victim shot earlier that day! In gun controlled Chicago nothing demands a doubling of effort like ‘complete and utter failure’.

Rest assured that the Mayor, and the usual suspects will hold a presser where they will point out-word from their self created hellhole at who is really to blame for this tragedy…..why, it’s none other than you and I…….

  5. David says:

    Just a thought – maybe paranoid, but…
Even though I haven’t yet prepared my Faraday, when I do, it’ll be two. IF a man made event were to ever to occur, anyone that evil might think to follow up with another a week or so later. Just stewing…

  6. Jim says:

I’m working on a trashcan also…. those things are pricey.
Insulating mine with cardboard and packing tape.
Also sealing all electronics and batteries in Mylar bags.
Using metal duct tape to seal the lid and any crimped seals…. folding it back on itself so that some of the metallic side touches the can.

Still waiting on my $8 Baofeng radios to be delivered.

  7. jh says:

I thought Jr did a post about it but what are you all putting into these? I’m with uncle on this, most is theory some is fact using data from 50years ago. But better being safe then sorry has always been a survivalist ‘s motto.
