From the Desk of John Rourke – July 14th, 2017

I’ve been approached by vendors wanting me to push their products. Sure. I don’t have a problem with that IF their products are any good AND they send me their products to test. Sound fair? I think so. They want to get YOU to buy their products and they want ME to help with that – just “because”. Crazy.

It’s been brought up that I never have a bad review. I guess for the most part that is true – for the most part. I have tested products that suck – and I don’t report it. I guess I should and pass that information on. I’ll change that. The main reason I haven’t more in the past is I hate putting my time and effort into something that disappointed me to start with. As stated – I’ll change that.

Rourke you rock in my book man, it’s very rare I disagree with any of your recommendations, you are on point for having a good eye for things brother, not to mention I most always benefit from your wisdom, I just wanted to take a minute and tell you how much I appreciate what you do for us, keep your chin up brother, I know how the internet can be, we as people can be very critical of one another, but you put yourself out there for you and us everyday, I respect the hell out of that! Don’t read into the criticism to much my friend, it’s just human nature, your doing a great job, and service for your fellow man, don’t ever forget that.

If a company wants you to review their product so be it. Good, bad, indifferent. An honest review good or bad should be welcome. It should help them improve a product or continue with the quality product they say they have

I’m sorry someone felt this was worthy of criticism. I think it’s obvious by now that I’m not into all the high-tech gadgets that appeal to so many of you guys, but I value your reviews because I know that you actually try these things out before you post them here. I assumed all along that these items were the best in their category at the time, whether it was because of price, durability, or whatever. Aside from that, I’d think it would be good CYA to simply decline to post about a product you didn’t like rather than to say “Hey, this is a piece of what’s hitting the fan” and then face possible legal repercussions. Keep doing what you’re doing. A lot of the information here isn’t relevant to why I prep, but I still learn new information from your posts and the responses.

You are a fair guy… and not spending time when you do this outside of employment, is something we all understand. I appreciate you not just dumping products out there…. Maybe you have a priority list for an eval .. when you hit a show stopper.. done and publish. ideas like .. Construction, durability, suitability for the task(s). I think most of us agree that one product that can do multiple tasks, is better than multiple products .. in bag anyway…. I personally have no issues with the way you been doing things… If that means you are more productive and spend more family time or get a canoe trip.. I’m good with it.

I agree with your perspective. If the product is horrible, then it is and it’s not worth reporting if you don’t have the time. Perhaps, did a review of item “A” and have nothing positive to report so, you aren’t reporting anything?

Also, there could be legalities there you want to think about. There is actually a case against “Bleepingcomputer” a IT website that promotes computer information, defeating malicious software, and promoting technology. One of the blogging admins posted a negative review of a product in really explicit words. Now, Bleeping computer is being sued. Whether they lose or win. The whole legal battle, finances, etc. Also, the product the admin posted about. Really does suck and everyone knows it, but because he put in writing on a website…sheesh. So for what it’s worth, use the words pros and cons whenever possible 🙂

Love that picture? As long as I have something to stop it…lol

Rourke, there’s a reason we and a lot of people are all reading your website. We like what you’re saying, and we believe you are an honest person. You keep doing what your doing. And don’t ever stop taking time to do things with your family. Like my wife always says…you’re making memories! God,Family,Country.

You write down to earth articles and make your observations known. I understand not reporting on things that just don’t hit the mark. Seems logical to me. Time is precious as you have noted. If you worry about any ramifications of your negative evaluations you can always append ‘YMMV’ at the end.
