Bug Out/Relocation System

Years ago I read an article in American Survival Guide about a bug-out system the author had come up with. This was back in the ’80s.

The author went on to describe that he had duffle bags filled with supplies that could be grabbed and moved to their vehicle for heading out of town. Bags had supplies in them organized by categories such as food, cooking, sanitation, etc. Each bag was color-coded for easy identification as to the contents.

A few decades forward that still seems like a fairly good system. The supplies are ready with no notice and they can be grabbed, thrown in the vehicle quickly, and go! Finding what is needed while on the go or after arrival to the targeted destination is made easy due to the color-coding system. Currently, I am working on organizing my supplies in the Ram 1500 Warlock. I have a backseat, under the back seat, a truck box, and some floor compartments in the back. I have started putting stuff together similar to the decades-old article. So far I’m liking it.

It’s commonsense really. All the cooking supplies together. All the ammo in one place. All the medical supplies together.

Any thoughts? What system do you use?

I like the concept in theory, and maybe with a larger household I’d consider it, but I’m frequently alone now and have the experience of having lost important items every time I’ve moved. Because of that, I prefer having multiple bags that will each work independently. If I have time to grab them all, that’s great, but if time or circumstance require me to leave bags behind I’ll still have the basics.

Now, if I still had a big SUV or a truck and could keep everything in it full time, that would be a different matter. A couple times, the kids and I lived out of boxes, and it worked well to organize everything by type rather than just having to shuffle through half a dozen miscellaneous containers to find what we needed.

John, due to circumstances beyond my control I will have to bunker up in my home, but this is still a good idea as some of my supplies and equipment are in a storage building and this way I only have to bring in things I need at that moment.
