Recently had a lot of questions regarding building AR’s. I am not an expert and some have – and will – call what I do assembly rather than building. That’s fine and not far from accurate. I have never built an AR upper from parts. It’s planned but never found the need. So complete AR upper componants have been the cornerstone of my builds. Lowers? That’s a different story. i have built almost all of my AR’s using stripped lowers. For those who are not aware a stripped lower is merely the lower half which holds the trigger and hammer and magazine – as well as the stock.
In no way am I going to do a step-by-step guide to building an AR. YouTube is perfect for this and there are some excellent video’s that show each step.
So this isn’t too long let’s build JBernDrApt an AR pistol in the simplest manner possible:
Lower: PSA AR-pistol Complete Lower with Shockwave Blade Stabilizer – $179.99(sale!)
Upper: MSF 10.5″ SS Barrel Upper with Free Float Quad Rail – $279.99
Bolt Carrier Group: M16 Bolt Carrier Group(BCG) with Charging Handle – $74.99
Total Price: $534.97
This will basically build you this – fairly similiar:
Granted – there will be some shipping charges, transfer fee(don’t pay more than $15), and you have to get a magazine and sights.
Not bad if you want a pistol.

Good Morning Rourke et al. I have also assembled a number of AR’s from kits, including one upper from parts, and I likely wont do it again. I just wanted to know how, so I know how to properly maintain and troubleshoot my rifles. For those who think this is a daunting task, my daughter built her own AR when she was 10. My 7 year old is building his own now. There are MANY resources that will walk you through every step of the assembly, and make the process absolutely fool proof. I will say that I have stayed away from polymer and 80% lowers, but that is just my preference. I have owned a “Carbon 15” once from Bushmaster once, but traded it away even though I never had a misfeed or any other issues with it. If you liked Lego’s, Erector Sets, or any kind of tinkering with moms kitchen gadgets as a kid, then you should most definitely build an AR and then enjoy the satisfaction of breaking it in. That first gentle bump on your shoulder and the sound of the steel ringing with that first shot, is just AWESOME!
My only bit of advice for your builds is MAKE SURE YOU LUBE IT. Nothing worse than a jam on your first round…of course that has NEVER happened to me once. 🙂
I’ve found, for me, the best AR-15 assembly videos have been the one’s produced by Brownells. They’ve broken each video in the series into small portions with great video showing you the step-by-step process with easy to follow instructions. if you go to their website then type in to search for “ar15 video” it will come up with a list of many. The series is towards the bottom of the list. These are free videos to watch or you can buy them as DVD’s. Just my 2 1/3 cents worth.
