My turn…..

This has been a crazy week. Way more happened than I needed and unfortunately not all good. I am sooo glad the weekend is here.

Spent some time cleaning guns this week. They were not terribly bad but overdue. I love Gun Scrubber to get the entire process done quickly. Not the cheapest quick clean but it beats the dishwasher.

Google+: I’ve never been much for the social media platform “Google+”. Had a buddy of mine at work tell me he really loved it and hardly used Facebook anymore. I decided to check it out since I haven’t messed with my account in quite some time. Impressed. I am definitely going to spend a little more time there. If you are a user my Google+ address is: https://plus.google.com/+1776PatriotUSA

REMINDER: Use coupon code “1776” for 10% off all orders at Valley Food Storage. This is through the end of the month.

Project Cherokee: The old Jeep Cherokee I bought for my 14-year-old has had a few more rust spots sanded and primed – and we actually started it the other day. On the project list is a new battery. Summertime money is always tight so I anticipate getting a decent amount of work done this Fall – when the weather cools down some.

    Accomplishments…

It has taken a couple of months, but my garage is mostly clean and organized.
Preps are all organized and labeled in totes.

Local restaurant is giving me food grade buckets and lids.
You cannot imagine how long it takes to get Soy sauce stains and smells out of them.
I can get 15 rolls of TP in a bucket, without crushing them too much.

I have been repairing a few old mechanical watches I found in my junk box. Regardless of the SHTF reason, no batteries = no time tracking.

Been buying up 22mag ammo for the Keltecs…. Walmart seems to have a better supply than anyone.

Had to drop $1700 on a new A/C for my truck. Better than buying another one.

Wife has been bringing me goodies from Goodwill…. MountainSmith lumbar pack, roll of wrapping plastic, tent, external frame camping pack, sleeping bag, small safe…

my newest project is;a 20 watt solar panel Cost $40,oo wired down to a Lawnmower start battery (U1) about $ 20.oo to a LED bar light $ 14.99.add a switch if you want or just use alligator clips. from the light on to the battery be sure you use some sort of solar control so the higher voltage off the panel wont burn out the LED light when charging. did this on my new 12 ft x 20 ft shed i had built.

Was in Boston all week so not much done here in Louisiana. Did finish restoring a retired LE friends High Standard 22 magnum derringer when I got home last night. After 35 years of carry, it was a mess.

All the steel now re-blued (Brownells Oxphoblue).
The alloy frame now coated with Durablue (nice)
Frame re-aligned and pivot pin replaced (action now tight and smooth)
Plated the trigger with nickle for corrosion and wear resistance.

My idea of fun. Putting it all together this morning then…

    Time to mow

Have wanted to refurbish a gun some day but haven’t located the right specimen yet. Sounds like a cool project.

  4. Patriot Believer says:

    JR,

Forgot to mention. I use automotive brake cleaner instead of gun scrubber–it’s the same thing only LOTS cheaper. Just remember that it removes ALL lubricants so everything must be lubed after cleaning (i.e. trigger mechanisms etc)

Yesterday’s post. I really love listening to Andrew Wilkow, “The Wilkow majority”. I feel like his better than Sean Hannity.

Bought the Lansky Knife Blade Medic Sharpner 3 in 1 from Amazon instead from BUDK. Same price, but that free 2 day shipping on Amazon. Man…it so pays for the Prime Membership.

Talked to my brother again, but about watches and trying to find a simple mechanical wind up wrist watch. He can get military grade equipment at wholesale prices. The last wind up watch I bought was at the PX, it was a Timex, and it was $20. Now…pffft, unless you guys have a good link, please send me one. Because otherwise..it’s a diamond in the rough. I even called Timex directly and they told me they do not make any more mechanical watches. The first thing my brother said was, “can’t you get those for $20?” (Doh!). Yeah…I thought so to, but not the case.

I found some but the lowest I can locate one is $70. I’m really hoping I can find one cheaper, but I don’t think all the time spent cruising pawn shops or watch shops isn’t going to turn up a reasonable one and not one soon. Go ahead, search yourself, Ebay, Amazon, Google, Buy.com, I may have to buy this one 🙁

Re-soiling my Garden after cutting the yard. I really need a composter. Say, did you know you can use Zip ties for weed eater? It’s working fine for me so far. Downloaded the life hacker app on the Roku….some really easy and cheap ideas from that app. Loving it.

Used, to use brake cleaner on my rifle until it took away the finish. Doh!

Sounds like everyone is re-organizing and getting things in order. I’m there with you.

    1. JR says:

      Good stuff Capt. Michaels!

I thought about the brake cleaner as it smelt the same but was fearful. The Gun Scrubber I use says “polymer safe”. Maybe the same stuff – not sure.

I tend to get lazy and throw my scraps in the trash when they really need to go in the compost bin(I have two). Need to get back at it.

      1. Patriot Believer says:

Sigh, not trying to persuade anyone but…

All “plastic” firearms are made with Nylon based polymers specifically for their strength and solvent resistance.

If you check the following chart against the ingredients of your particular brand of brake cleaner, it should alleviate your fears:

        https://www.calpaclab.com/nylon-chemical-compatibility-chart/

It’s rated “excellent” for the ingredients in the generic stuff I use.

Good thing nylon polymer is rated excellent for kerosene (a petroleum based solvent). It’s the primary ingredient in Hoppes #9.

        1. Capt.Michaels says:

Yep..it may have to be that path. Thought about that. Thanks. I will let you guys and gals know how it goes.

      1. Capt.Michaels says:

Thank you, but it’s quartz movement, (Battery operated). I was good with the face on it. I already have my Marine watch band the watch is going to go own. Thanks again.

    2. Lightning says:

Capt.Michaels- Havent seen any wind up watches but there are plenty of wind up clocks still available at a fair price- better than nothing if the grid goes down.

This year looks to be a bumper crop of apples, peaches and pears here in upstate NY.
Last year the frost prevented these buds from surviving. Come autumn I will be drying, canning and freezing galore I hope.
Garden is growing well.Bumper crop for corn and hay so far also.Lightning

Took a two day defensive handgun class this weekend and boy did my accuracy and speed improve. I was amazed. Worked on eliminating unnecessary movements mostly and prior training scars. Worked in the gardens and reattached the rain catchment system so we have approximately 140 spare water on hand for the garden of emergencies. That’s it, resting now.
