From the Desk of John Rourke – January 17th, 2017

Finished my first stippling job. I was exceedingly detailed and it turned out great. I would estimate about 2 hours on this one PMAG. Worth it? Sure. The level of gripping surface is greatly enhanced. Will I do all my mag’s? Nope. Too time consuming however I am experimenting with different patterns that take less time. Remember it is function over cosmetic appearance.

I considered taking Friday off to stay at home and watch the Inauguration.  Likely will just watch or listen to it at work. For my locale I’m not concerned about violence or massive protects. It may happen in Washington and other areas around the country. There is no doubt radical and violent factions exist to disrupt events around the Inauguration and the Trump presidency.

I’ve been putting back some gasoline and all I have are plastic gas cans. I need to change this and purchase all metal 5 gallon cans. There are a variety of outlets for this but most are extremely expensive. Surplus cans are rarely found at least for decent prices. Tractor Supply has some however they are in excess of $40.

Part of my household secondary stream of income – my wife has started a business selling custom vinyl decals, t-shirts, and glass etching. No website yet everything is through Facebook. Pretty cool stuff. Below is a vinyl graphic for a Yeti cup.

JR, you might try using 2-3 55 gallon drums instead. You can put them on a cascading rack and use your plastic cans to fill them with. Don’t forget Stabil or Pri-G. The cascade rack will let you use gravity to fill either your vehicle or a transfer container. You can get the drums from most bulk fuel distributors for $20 bucks or so.

I’ve thought about that also. The only draw back, even with using a number of 5 gallon cans, is you should have the storage vessels in a containment which will contain any spills. This is especially important if you are on well water. I had a 5 gallon plastic can spring a leak and drain out before I knew what had happened. Luckily, it spilled on concrete and not the soil. I need to modify my storage to include a concrete pad with a berm to contain spillage. Just another project.

IBC Totes (23 – 325 gal) in metal cages work for fuel .. paint the nylon and cover to prevent sun damage. I like the idea of a concrete pad Oren.. and you can stack two .. the cages support it (650 gal). I have a friend that plums to together top to bottom and stacks for water .. same weight different liquid… Put the bottom one on block to use the spigot. The center cap of the tote screws out and ins the size of a hand turned Bung pump ($65.00 Harbor freight). You can also use a 12 vdc marine pump.. but I don’t like the idea of sparks so much.. water fine.. fuel? nope..

good luck with the bidness JR 🙂

and yeah I’m going to hang out at the farm .. my city is pretty racially divided in not liberal vs conservative.. I’ve had my hand on my hip 3 times in two months and drawn once .. that’s enough, if I can avoid it. umm hmmm…
I am about DONE tolerating the tolerant left… lost my rose colored glasses a while back.

keep the book links coming .. very cool Thank you JR

over at ar15.com there is a 26 page discussion in the outdoor survival section on storage of fuel. due to the expansion properties of gasoline the ibc totes are to Only be for kero or diesel. i had a pair of 15 gal drums that held soap\wax from a automatic car wash deve!op cracks in the top after two years of use but the two full of kerosene are still fine – this summer will be year four for them.
