What Did You Do To Prep This Week?

Hope everyone is staying cool wherever you are. Here in South Carolina the heat is just flat out intense.

Have had a pretty good week. Spent a lot of time on a home improvement project installing laminate flooring in our upstairs. It’s a pain and time consuming. Almost done.

Beyond that this week involved a lot of organizing. A substantial portion of my preparedness supplies are stored in my 2-car garage. I’ve needed to do a major overhaul in my organization and am over 75% complete thus far.

Went to our groups bug out location and helped unload a couple of rabbit hutches and move a few other things.

Worked on the group’s supply logistics list and also started a checklist for retreat arrival. Basically this checklist would be used should we have to relocate to the bug out location. This list would help provide some organization, reduce stress, and allow our brains to be used for thinking rather than remembering.

Paid on my layaway of the Springfield Operator 1911 45ACP. Can’t wait to get it out. Just a few hundred dollars left! Anyone wish to donate to the cause let me know.

Started marking all my magazines. I am way overdue for doing this.

Your turn…..

Took week off and went to a living history village/museum up in detroit area, stayed at the most sketchy 4 star hotel then had the radiator blow a seam day after we came back home while in traffic (least we weren’t in detroit area!!) – a unexpected bill didn’t need right now but easily taken care of by emergency fund, good relationship with garage & AAA, Helped clean, set up & instruction how to run a 60+ year old grist mill, chaffing & separator machine and corn sheller at a county fair. Hit a good dozen garage sales but found nothing except a couple quarts of motor oil for $1 each. Missed getting a push reel mower for $25 by 15 min that was in fantastic shape. Then put together a couple LC2 Alice rigs with modern pouches to use as spares/handouts. These high speed rigs and their triple digit prices are just not cost friendly to most.

yes, Henry Ford and Greenfield village. I swear if the zombie apocalypse happens & I have enough people Greenfield village is the place to take over and create a community. But reality is, it’ll be probably burned to the ground and all those historic tools destroyed by the idiots from dearborn/detroit area just out of spite.

Well it was a busy week , got new scope mounted on 700 and sighted in . Bought some things the Mrs. wanted form Mag pull for her AR. Still working on bug out trucks $$$$$ and no end in sight yet . Rourke hope you get your pistol soon they are as close to a prefect 1911 as I have found yet . Get plenty of good mags and your set , and I would suggest an added spring and pin set for it just in case.

secondrecon – appreciate the advice on the 1911. I am looking at Kimber SS mags and prefer 8-rd. They have come recommended to me from Panhandle Rancher and seem to be of excellent quality at a good price. Spare parts is something I am working on for my AR’s and will do for the 1911 as well. I am looking at a Ruger Commander Lightweight for the future…..maybe.

Had a grandson with me this week, so we camped out one night, 2 days and fished and did fire building, star gazing, outdoors cooking and did some target shooting – wow was it hot!!! We also practiced some with a blow gun and balloon slingshot. We picked up some supplies white rice, dried beans, pasta, canned fruits and veggies, honey, peanut butter, salt and sugar, jams & jellies and canned meats. Picked up a couple of boxes of 22, 223, 7.62X39, 9mm and 7.62X25. Thinking SHTF in Texas summer wouldn’t be fun maybe should look at the Redoubt. – Keep Looking UP

    1. JR says:

Thanks JBernDrApt. SOunds like you had a good time. I really want to do some camping this Fall. Good idea using balloons for blowguns and slingshots. I have used them when shooting real guns as they provide immediate feedback.

Picked raspberries and black berries from our bushes with the grand girls-ate some, froze some. Watering the orchard, the mini tree nursery and the veggies-very dry despite some rain.Mid 90s here is rare but we have had many.
My brother came over and helped me grease and change the oil in the gear box on the brush hog and hook it up to the tractor so I can get our pastures in better shape.Lifting the PTO alone is a bit too heavy for me these days.
Will be picking up two dwarf. goats in early Aug. By next year they will have kids and will be milk-able should the need arise. They dont need too much room and they are much easier to handle than cows.
The order from Em.Ess arrived (took a longtime-they must be very busy) .Stocked up on FD
stew veggies .They are delicious and all you need is a little beef and water.
Decided to buy more directly eatable food from cans -ex. olives, ravioli -beans- tuna etc.
Many now come with pop type tops.
Rourke- I wish we had a group of like minded preppers here. Hope your group remains
committed. If I had extra I would send you a donation for your purchase but right now we are tight !! Lightning

    1. JR says:

Thanks Lighting. Sounds like you had a good week. My group is committed and we are making some great strides.

No problem on the donation. I’m good but thanks!

I picked up 2 boxes CCI Velocitor 22 LR was told a 2 box limit per customer for 12.00 dollars including tax at a Bi Mart in a near by town. I went back two days later and they were sold out of any 22 ammo and was told by the clerk I’m not the only wanting ammo I hope another shortage isn’t around the corner.

    1. JR says:

Cole – good supply here of .22’s in my area. I do believe another shortage will occur as the election draws near and of course if Hillary wins.

This is a mixed week so far.
Got in some Israeli bandages I ordered through Amazon. Went to an Army & Navy store today; Nikki picked out and bought a new pack, in a European-looking desert camo. She also bought some veggie MREs.
We went to Cabela’s for an advertised prepping seminar, but arrived to find out it was a trick. There was no seminar, they just had a pile of stuff on a table for sale. We were pretty annoyed, as we had driven 82 miles to get there. Lost any respect I still had for them today.

This past week was sort of a bitter/sweet affair. My father-in-law passed away (2 months shy of 90, he lived a good life). It was really tough on my wife who 9 months earlier lost her mother. At least they’re back together again. That’s the bitter part. The sweet part is that we got a portion of the divied up food supply they had. Some of it was the typical wheat, flour, etc. in 5 gallon buckets but they also had a lot of Mountain House in #10 tins. We scored with a can of Chili Mac, yum. We also ended up with an older, hence, better built, hand grinder. They will be missed. My wife is the youngest of 8 children. Sadly, as too often happens, a couple of the siblings thought they should get everything even though a will had been established stating who got what. Just seems to bring out the true nature in people.

I ordered me an AR 15 kit from Palmetto State Armory. Can’t wait to get it! I ordered (from Amazon) and received 2 small bottles of 3M Vetbond which is used to glue cuts/wounds instead of stitching. Hope I never have to use it but at least I have it for an emergency.

Interesting news from a friend of mine who is part of a prepping group in Columbia SC. He said a new person (lady) came to their meeting last week, she had been invited by an active member of the group. Anyway, the lady said what got her interested in prepping is a few night previous she had been woken up from a dream she had a 3AM. The dream told her she needed to prepare for a grid down event this October. Her husband sleeps in a separate bedroom (health issues or snoring) so the next morning she told him she had something to tell him and he said I have something to tell you also. He proceeded to tell her he had the exact dream!

I have never had a dream that foretold anything but I do believe there are people that do have them. I am not discounting their dream, just makes me want to do more prep.

Like JBernDrApt says, keep looking up!

1 case MRE’s, silver, some stuff to go loud with, solid fuel and camo for new bags. Kbar Knife for new bag, NEW BCG, Reflex site for bang stick, some shorter bench mags, and a non-armored vest Lots of garden work .. VERY hot .. and more stuff than I can easily eat.. just a little more and it’s some canning time. Harvested 35 gals of honey on a shared filed.. My personal field is next. Swapped quail eggs plus two drakes for two suzies, Spent so time in the ARRL Manual (need much more), and signed up t test exams.

Organized my “food preps” on shelving, added two 5 gal gas cans full and stabilized, and organized my defensive tools for better access. Picking up lots of small chicken eggs .. they just started laying (yeah!). Gathered ripening figs.. and started picking new tomatoes.. and set my alarm for 1.5 hours earlier .. since it takes 2.5 hours now to hit everything before work.. weekends are NOT enough when everything is ripe and growing .. I was gonna say cmon October .. but not if Fred’s story is true.. If it’s gonna happen .. OK .. whatever . I can’t work any harder and I’ll watch .. and at the least October will be milder weather.. as opposed to something out of Dante’s Inferno ..

Personally the DNC stuff this week.. has me cringing .. but maybe that’s just me..

Most times if i’m not familiar with the acronym used, i look it up…..GG58, what is”NEW BCG”? Thanks, joyce

Running to keep up with you all……good info. Dreams, could be significant. Prophecy says”your old men shall dream dreams” Acts 2:17……..have often thought when it is getting close, we would have multiple reports of, not just one or two.

      1. Myke says:

A BCG is the acronym for “Bolt Carrier Group”. That’s the tube like piece of an AR-15 that has the firing pin in it. A very good item to have extra of. You can pick them up on sale for around $89.

      2. goingray58 says:

        joyce..
Myke correctly defined the BCG .. apologies for the acronymic.. While not technically part of the bolt carrier group .. one might consider the Charging handle as well.. Give n it is vulnerable to being bent when used in the field. It’s pretty easily bent. But i suppose anything COULD fail. At some point a backup gun is better than parts.. just not fun to carry 🙂

        1. joyce says:

Thanks Myke/GG58….was glad to see the discussion on spare parts….had been wondering if it had been discussed and i missed it.

  10. Jim says:

    Not much….
1/2 gal canning jar for $1.
1000 rounds TulAmmo .223 for $275, out the door.
    More garage cleaning and organization.

  11. Indiana Joe says:

Oh, almost forgot. Starting looking for silver among the coins at my store. So far, 8 silver coins in 2 days. Did not think they would be so common.
Also, got some free firewood due to storm damage in the area.
