Many people today feel it’s no longer safe to speak out in public about what they believe. They fear losing jobs, getting targeted, or dealing with other serious consequences. Because of that, many are choosing to stay quiet and avoid attention. This idea is called “Going Gray.”
What Is Going Gray?
Going gray means blending in so that people don’t notice you. It can apply to small things like not standing out at a cookout or big things like hiding your views and lifestyle to avoid being targeted during troubled times. In this post, we’re focusing on how to go gray during what we believe could be the beginning stages of a major struggle in America — a time when people may face danger simply because of what they believe or how they prepare.
Think About This: How Do Strangers Know Who You Are?
Try this: sit in a public place like a mall and watch people walk by. Can you tell who used to be in the military? Who is educated and who is not? Who might be carrying a concealed weapon? Who looks like they might have a criminal past?
Whether we admit it or not, we all make guesses about people based on how they look, act, and dress. That’s called profiling, and while some say it’s wrong, it’s something we all do naturally. If someone is limping, we assume they’re hurt. If someone has gang tattoos, wears sunglasses indoors, and looks shady, we make a judgment — and others do the same to us.
Are You Easy to Spot?
-
Do you wear shirts with pro-freedom slogans?
-
Do you adjust your holster when you sit down?
-
Do you have political bumper stickers?
-
Does your Facebook page show your political views?
-
Do people around you know you own guns or prep?
Even having an American flag on your front porch can label you a “Patriot” — or worse in today’s world. The easiest way for others to figure out who you are is through what you say and what you share.
Loose lips sink ships.
How to “Go Gray” – Step by Step
1. Keep a Low Profile (Attitude & Actions)
Be calm. Be boring. Don’t show strong opinions in public. If someone asks about politics, say, “I don’t really follow that stuff.” Even if you know a lot, pretend you don’t. Don’t be loud, cocky, or pushy. Just be someone that nobody notices.
2. Dress to Blend In
Don’t wear shirts with flags, slogans, or military gear that stands out. Stay away from tactical pants, camo jackets, or anything that screams “prepper.” Look like a regular person. Neutral clothing is best. A plain hoodie and jeans do more to protect you than a “Don’t Tread on Me” shirt.
3. Buy Supplies Quietly
When you buy survival gear or guns, use cash if possible. Avoid leaving a digital trail. Don’t have big boxes of food or ammo delivered to your home. If people see what you’re getting, they’ll start asking questions. Buy from small shops or private sellers when you can.
4. Watch Your Vehicle
Bumper stickers give away your beliefs. That “Come and Take It” sticker might feel patriotic — but it also paints a target. Same with jacked-up trucks or loud exhausts. Drive something plain and unnoticeable. Don’t give people a reason to remember your ride.
5. Hide Your Preps
Don’t leave your garage open with supplies in plain sight. If your kid’s friend walks in and sees stacks of ammo and food, he’ll tell someone. Then everyone knows. Keep your preps stored in places that guests or neighbors won’t see.
6. Be Smart Online
Avoid posting or liking political content on Facebook or Instagram. During tough times, your online activity could be used against you. Some people may report others just for what they post. Keep your personal views offline.
7. Fit In Financially
If your neighborhood is struggling and you’re living well, people will notice. If others are eating rice and beans and you’re grilling steak outside, expect some attention — and not the good kind. Appear to be in the same boat as everyone else.
In Summary
Going gray doesn’t mean giving up or staying silent forever. It means being smart so you can stay in the fight longer. As things get more divided and uncertain, you don’t want to become a target just because of what you believe or how you live.
This is not about fear — it’s about strategy.
Can you stay ready, stay informed, and stay under the radar?
Stay tuned for more.

I used to somewhat subscribe to the “going Grey” bit but the older I get the more I think living that way is for pussies. I believe more in the walk softly but carry a big stick. Make sure your sticks are of quality and have big ass magazines to feed your sticks.
I keep a 21′ Flagpole out front flying Old Glory and occasionally political flags below her such as the Trump flags I have flown. I like people to know where I stand.
I believe in self responsibility, respecting others, and wish for peace and good will for all mankind.
But .. if I can’t have that I will keep the machinegun. Peace all.
