Book Review: The Urban Homestead

If you’re looking for a practical, no-nonsense guide to self-sufficient living in the city, The Urban Homestead is a must-read. This book covers everything from growing food in small spaces to raising chickens, composting, and even making your own household products. It’s written in an easy-to-follow style, making it perfect for beginners or anyone wanting to take their urban homesteading skills to the next level.

One of the things I love most about this book is its focus on small-space gardening. Not everyone has a big backyard, but The Urban Homestead proves you don’t need one. Whether you have a tiny patio, a balcony, or just a sunny window, there are plenty of creative ways to grow food. The authors do a great job of breaking down different methods like container gardening, vertical gardening, and even guerrilla gardening (which is exactly what it sounds like—planting in unexpected places!).

Now, if you have a large space to garden(like I do) and want to maximize food production, this book is extremely beneficial.

Beyond gardening, the book also dives into food preservation, energy conservation, and simple DIY projects that make urban homesteading feel more doable, even for those just getting started. A great book to help provide guidance and motivation to get you on your journey to a more self reliant existence.  Highly recommended!
