Independence Day

July 4th, 2016. Many will be celebrating with friends and family the greatest country in the world and using words like freedom, liberty, and patriotism. New American flags will be flown and red, white and blue t-shirts worn. While others will be looking at this Independence Day a little different than years past. For many this Independence Day will be looked at from a more historical and almost “memorial” perspective.

To illustrate the severity of just how far modern America has distanced itself from the shining beacon of freedom and liberty it once was look no further than California.  In just the past few days Governor Jerry Brown signed into law sweeping new gun control laws on top of some of the most strict in the nation. The assault on the 2nd Amendment is significant. These new laws include making it illegal to possess a magazine holding more than 10 rounds. Background checks on ammunition purchases(including online) and making it illegal to allow anyone other than a family member to use your gun.

Insanity.

Governmental intrusion in all of our lives often goes unnoticed to the majority but for us that pay attention and understand the facade reality provides a different perspective.

Happy Independence Day. Celebrate the greatest country in the world. Just not as great as it once was.

America is like raising your kids. You always love them and want to be proud of them. They just make it tough sometimes. But you can only hope for the best and pitch in when needed.
Happy Independence Day to all. 🇺🇸

The good man that owns TDIOhio and I sat under the ranges ‘tin roof’ smoking a fair quality cigar… Talking about this sort of thing… He said he hoped “… to be around long enough to help put the country back together..”. Sounded like a fair plan to me.

I’ve long been a fan of Will and Ariel Durant’s THE STORY OF CIVILIZATION. These eleven tomes encompass more than 100 centuries and took a half century to write. Almost as impressive is that the authors then distilled this compendium of history into a slender tome they called, THE LESSONS OF HISTORY that every thinking citizen should read and ponder. One of their conclusions was that no established civilization falls without having first been eroded from within. It is the very erosion of founding principles that makes it vulnerable to outside forces. These master historians spend some time with Rome and conclude it fell due to the absence of moral behavior. Like Rome the citizens of this nation have also made themselves vulnerable. Caligula would be at home in Las Vegas and Nero in Washington, DC.

Happy Independence Day. Enjoy while you still can.

The fools celebrate anything with no understanding. The few of us who really know celebrate what once was and drown our sorrows for what is.

Indeed Rome fell from within. As we could fall form the same lack of moral fiber or lacking a rule set that treated everyone equitably. Rome was built on the inequality of using the backs of lesser peoples labor, indeed slaves. The Romans usurped the deities of the Greeks, and made what they wanted of them.. not the original meanings.. suck and Mercury and Hermes. To a deity they shared recognizable similarities to co-opt them and legitimize themselves. Understand I am Christian and don’t believe in them, but I am trying to make a point. That point would be if rules are co-opted they lose their resilience and meaning. Once lost they cannot be regained. If the leadership of a country has no respect for the laws and rules that make that country they fail the country and those they serve. Moreover they lose the ideas of service as a mission and seek to rule on their own behalf, transforming citizens into subjects. and co-opting not only beliefs, but their labor and very lives as well.

I pray not to return to what we had, but to move forward to something better with lives free to pursue liberty, life and the pursuit of happiness free of infringement.

Happy 4th of July .. remember the sacrifices that gave it to us.. and thank those who serve.
